Your protocol could be longer or shorter. For instance if you were trying to hone your color choices maybe you have a color protocol that includes 1. checking if the color is in your palette 2. checking the color against other pieces in your wardrobe for harmony 3. Making sure the textural elements and stylines WITH the color all fit your style goals
