Hey Peter, Just watched this video, but while you are saying that you still like the Play:3, I seem to have missed whether you think that the Play:3s still sound better than the new Sonos Ones or not. What do you think? Is it better now, in 2021, to buy two Sonos Ones or two Play:1 for stereo sound?
Replaced my play 3s with sonos one. I sold the ones and started using the play 3s again. Sonos one cannot fill a room and sounded like a boombox to me. I have a pair of ones for surround though and they seem fine.

Looking to buy a pair of used play:3 to replace the Play:1 I am currently using for my Arc/Sub set my in my living room.
I've recently got a pair of 1st Gen Ikea Symfonisk for my Dining area.
This got me thinking. If a newer pair of ikea Symfonisk can match an older Play:3 just for Music and if grouping a Sub/Sub mini to them, which will sound better.

I use all your EQ sets and has really enhanced my systems.
I’m now planning to add one more P3 to then replace the P1s I use ass surrounds in an arc 5.2.1 setup. Are the EQ sets different to what you showed with the P1s when using the P3s or should I just retain those settings?

Is there much to be gained by upgrading the plays 1s to 3s ( from a play 1 stereo plus sub to a play 3 stereo plus sub) setup?

Suprisingly old ones(play3) sounds better, more open more detail, maybe less of boom but thats all. Main points on new ones are probably design, size and that they are smart...
Since from unknown reasons they do not mention output audio power I did not even consider them and took dockin.
Other brands were going for volume instead of consistent output, hard to find good quality instead of that.
I would expect some at least closing in to devialet reactor, its more of price and AI battle mostly which is a shame for audiophiles, you get even multiroom function but 2 speakers in 2 rooms also mean mono...
Haha, I am in agreement with you on the reactor proposition. I want more competition there! Nothing is coming close in terms of design, performance and sound quality. I did consider the B&W Formation Duo though...
I'm looking for an excellent bedroom sound system on a budget. Looks like I can get two used Play:3s for around $200. Think that's worth it in 2023?
For that price not bad. But they are a little old already. And has no AirPlay support.

I currently have an Arc, Sonos Sub and two play 3’s for surrounds. I bought the two play 3’s with pedestal stands this past summer for $20 for the set. In your honest opinion, should I stick with the play 3 or switch to something newer for the surround speakers? I prefer the look of the newer Sonos one speakers but in every review I watch they don’t sound as clear and sound much more bass heavy.
I have run that combination of Arc+Sub+2x Play:3 before. They are pretty loud. If you go back to a One, you will find the volume overall to be diminished. And damn I am envious you got the play:3s at $20!!!! I'd say stick to the Play:3 and change to the ones only when they break. It's like free surround!
@@PeterPee I appreciate the input. Maybe I'll pickup some One SL's anyways and try them out myself. I always have the Sonos Beam in the bedroom to put one set of surrounds in there. I just don't like how dated the Play3's look and they're white with the grey grille covers. The sonos beam in the bedroom is also white. But the arc and sub are black. My fear of adding the play 3's too the bedroom is they'll be too loud when the wife wants to sleep. I did look for some covers today for the Play3. I found some in charcoal black but they're $50 each. Have you ever tried them?
I haven’t tried the covers. And they are pricey. I’d rather you put the money towards a pair of one SLs in that case. Please keep the play:3s around the house. They are great speakers and at that price, hard to imagine you can do better with anything else.
Hi Peter - thanks for your fantastic analysis. I understand the play 3’s are much older tech than the sonos one’s but which is the better speaker for rear surrounds (with a beam gen 2)? If you had to choose… in my experience the one’s are approx 25% more expensive but the difference is you’re buying new vs second hand!! Thanks.
Pure sound quality wise, the Play:3s are definitely better and MUCH louder. And yes, you will get them used.
Is there a delay with video with the play 3’s like there is with the play 5’s? Trying to decide between two 1’s with the playbase or these
With Play:3s paired as surrounds to Playbase, no delay. Even with 1s or 5s, no delays if paired to Playbase.
I solved the lag issue by changing the audio delay from(max) 2000ms to low (75ms) and the sync was perfect.
And @PeterPee thanks for being my guide into the Sonos world. I’ve only been in the Sonosphere for less than a week but already waiting for the other play5 to make a stereo pair. My plan had been to grab one in June and another in July but as good as one p5 is … it’s needs its other.
Next stop in the rabbit hole 🕳 🐇 will be a sound bar, and the arc is still WAYYY out of budget range so I’m gonna be rewatching your vids for the umpteenth time.
One thing you have convinced me of is to go for play3 instead of ONE SL. I have loads of echo dots around the house so I don’t see the need to get smart enabled ones. The dealer here is insisting I go for the oneSL but I’m still going on the result of your play:3 v One video.

Does anyone have a Playbase paired w/ ones? How does this configuration sound for music and video? Thanks
This combo works well for music. I’ve always liked the playbase for music, as compared to the playbar or beam. The playbase has a sub chamber On its own. With a sub the equation Changes.
Peter Pee will that combo be good for video also? My primary objective there is dialogue enhancement and richer overall sound, not earth shattering explosions.

For videos, it’s not too bad if you don’t need the earth shattering explosions. The only issue that I have with ALL sonos soundbars is that you can’t adjust the dialogue levels so that might be an issue if you find the dialogue to be still soft.
Playbase is tuned for videos. I prefer music with my stereo play 3s
