Fashion and modelling may look glamorous but it's not all about looks. As any model will tell you - you must work hard to be successful. How to become a model is a broad question that we aim to answer.
The first aspect of modelling is to understand what type of model you are. There are a number of areas that models can work in, and various requirements for each.
Commercial model - less importance on height and body shape, often has a girl-next-door look and appeals to a wider audience. There are plenty of commercial models under 5'7". Commercial models find work on advertising campaigns or e-commerce boutique websites for example. The word commercial refers to selling something and a commercial model is typically used to promote a product or service. Commercial models are often asked to more be expressive in photoshoots so personality is essential. Experience in acting or dance as well as knowing your facial expressions and body position helps a lot when becoming a commercial model.
Catwalk model - very strict on height and measurements (girls over 5'9" and boys over 6'). Catwalk models must have specific body measurements and the confidence to walk in front of a watching audience whilst often wearing elaborate (and sometimes uncomfortable) fashion collections.
Editorial model - strict on height and measurements. Editorial models often have a distinctive look, strong bone structure, and a body shape that fits high-end fashion. Becoming an editorial model is probably the most difficult as so much depends on your facial features, measurements and body shape.
There are plenty of other modelling sectors such as plus size (also referred to as curve modelling), fitness modelling, beauty modelling, promo modelling, teen modelling, and a bunch of other areas.
What type of model are you?
Some models join model agencies and they get work through the agency who will take a percentage of each job. You can join agencies by sending in simple, natural images or finding out when they do 'open castings' or 'walk-ins' and visit the agency in person.
More and more models are choosing to freelance. Finding work through websites, social media, or contacts. To become a freelance model, you'll have to build your portfolio up (this can be done by Test Shooting), setting up a website, and promoting yourself.
To get started as a model, set up a model profile and receive industry feedback from professionals.

Modeling can be a lot of fun but is definitely hard work! Kudos to all the models out there that work hard for their dreams!!
Very true. Modeling takes dedication and the right type of guidance. There are too many agencies exploiting models who have a dream without consideration for their personal well-being. More must be done to protect new models entering the industry.
I have wanted to model/ TRIED getting into modeling since I was 14.... I am now 26. I am past the "prime time" age that companies like to hire you at.
I have never had help or guidance & I have tried asking for help. But unless you have an agency representing you, no one wants to help. All I keep hitting are dead ends & creeps that put me in really uncomfortable situations. -_- And it sucks because no one gives props to us who have tried but have never gotten anywhere & have dealt with bad situations trying to get work, because "we're not famous".
Well said. Becoming a 'real' model is not as easy as it looks.

Freelancer Club Hi,I’m 12 and 5’3 and my dream is to become a high fashion model,I don’t know where to start or if I’m even old enough to start. Can you help please?
*When I tried to become a model I became anorexic and then felt into depression and took medicine that made me gain weight that I lost but still have more body fat than I should BUT... I found myself - that I wouldn't have found had I not gone in this dark path that is bright compared to the one of modeling - thanks to my friends who have been there and told me that modeling is just a lonely empty superficial vain world-*
I dont know if i want to be a model
Modeling is my dream but I don't know if it's gonna affect my school work. How do I start?
Hi, if you're interested in modelling at still at school, you would be best to find a local teen modelling agency in your area. Most agencies have 'walk-in' days where people can drop into their agency and have a discussion about modeling. NEVER go to an agency without a parent or guardian and DO NOT pay for anything. If you are asked to pay for a portfolio or agency fee, it's most likely a scam. Model agencies make their money by finding work for models and taking a percentage of that fee.
I really want to be a model but my parents don’t want me to how can i convince them to at least let me try out
Abby, modelling is not for everyone and can be a lot of hard work with tonnes of rejection. Search your local model agencies in your area and ask them if they have an open day - this is an opportunity to meet model agents and ask them any model-related questions that you and your parents may have.
Thx I’ll see if I can x
