hallelu lee But looks play a HUGE factor. You can probably talk to a pretty girl and get her number but it is VERY difficult, that is why you are better off working on looks, plus since when do you see an ugly man walk with a pretty woman? Unless they were already friends before.

Of course attractive people have some issues in life cos of their looks (i think especially females), but the advantages weigh out the disadvantages by far in my opinion. Everybody in the range from "really ugly" to "incredibly beautiful" has reasons to complain somehow, but i think almost everybody knows where he/she wants to place himself if he/she could choose his/her looks. No where even near average ;)

People like to think that if they were more beautiful, skinnier etc they would not be insecure, they would be happy and basically all their problems would go away. They get mad and jealous when beautiful people talk about being insecure. They probably feel like beautiful people don’t have the right to be insecure. But being insecure in reality has nothing to do with how you look. You can always find someone more beautiful than yourself. And like she says the more you focus on the way you look, regardless of how you actually look, the more insecure you are. Cause the more you focus on it the more flaws you find. The best way to learn how to be confident in your looks is to find a way to accept that you don’t look perfect and that you might not even be especially beautiful at all and try your best to not put your worth in your appearance. I’m not saying this is easy. But it is easier and better than changing your looks only to find that you still feel insecure.

Yea being overweight is rough , it's important not to dehumanise people based on their weight especially because some weight issues both being overweight and underweight are linked to mental health issues , the fact is you don't know if somebody is just lazy or is in fact severely depressed and being self-destructive. They could have been trough god knows what and use food to escape , they may lie in their beds all day because they have no self-worth are super depressed. Those who are overweight are people too and deserve to be treated as people. You don't have to encourage obesity to show kindness and tolerance towards these kinds of struggles , what we need is to be supportive to make people who are overweight feel that they aren't horrible people and that the importance of losing weight is for them ; for their health and mobility not for them to become passable as human beings just to become healthier and freezer ! @@manictiger It is mean. Humans are above are primitive intuitions and able to intellectualise the true nature of a person no matter what their weight is Honestly I'd be friends with people of all sizes , somebody with self-harm scars , I'd be friends with somebody with depression or who struggles with addiction and the fact is sometimes our friends go through bad times , they are human beings and can't be perfect all the time. As long as they are good people I'll be their friend and I don't see fat people as bad people , fat people can be loving , caring , giving , funny and smart and that's what I care about. Don't get me wrong though I wouldn't encourage them to be fat , but I would love them despite it and if I could help them lose weight I would want to , but not because them being slim makes them a better friend but because I care for them I would want them to be in good health.

I find it amazing how so many people can watch the same thing and get two completely different messages out of it. She clearly stated that what we see on the magazine covers/pages, isn't her. It's a "Construction" of her. How much clearer can she be. That one sentence speaks volumes. Maybe if she pointed out how short term a model's career is or how her looks will fade with time and gravity, some of you wouldn't be so negative. Society pays far to much attention on the packaging instead of the contents. You can be beautiful on the outside but when gravity and age have taken their toll, all you are left with is who you truly are. And that can only be found on the inside. That is what we need to pay attention too. And I don't know about any of you, but I would much rather be beautiful on the inside because that's the person you live with 24 hours a day. And no amount of money would be worth a temporary superficial beauty and a hateful and miserable soul that you have to live with your entire life. And there are many people in this world that fit that description. They have my sympathy. Simply my humble opinion.

Wonderful words of inspiration right there...I once wanted to be a model when I was 16 and now? Whats changed? I have learnt to be my own model, my own image, a self that the world would look at and say God bless you, I use my beauty meticulously using it to attract men and women so that they could see my words of wisdom, with every perfect picture I upload, I attach a life inspiring quote to it, so when people see me, all they would want to do is believe in themselves and be inspired. Am glad I did not become 'the' model because I could have lost myself to this self 'constructed' look. Plus I also think models should be appreciated more, since theh give away themselves to show off the art of others that are passionate of their work be it hair, clothes, makeup, campaign or shoes. looks are like a first door to a person. if you’re beautiful then that door is opened and people will go to the second door which is personality, who you really are, etc. if you’re not attractive then the first door remains closed and people won’t even bother trying to get to know you. Beautiful people say looks don’t matter simply because it’s something they don’t struggle with (so eventually personality will become their main focus) You can be unhappy for various reasons, but it’s unfair to say something doesn’t matter because /you/ don’t struggle with it. Ideally we all should focus on what’s inside but the vast majority of people will never bother that much if they’re not impressed after a first, superficial glance towards someone.

The irony is you don't get to say, "Trust me, because I am [insert topic]" because the people who don't benefit from that know what it's like to be on the other side of the fence and can see the privilege received. A great example is in dating. A young beautiful female or male has a significant advantage of finding a partner, especially male, if they are scaled 8+. That's because 80% of the women tend to be attracted to 20% of the men. So the other 80% of the men are having to fight tooth and nail for female attention, while the 20% look down and say, "ayy don't worry, it's not all that great". The issue is people say and want to do something positive, but on the other hand their actions say otherwise.

She said that, and with the point being that looks rule a lot of things that it shouldn't be able to. Looks are not what there is to a person, yet society is built to value looks above all else. That's the real point. You can look good and receive benefits but be miserable at the same time for entirely different reasons, or you can look a certain "bad" way and life will treat you poorly despite your personality having nothing to do with how society judges you. The key thing is, that it's always harder to speak up when you are in the segment that in the majority's eyes is benefitting from what you are talking about. A millionaire says money isn't everything? Nobody cares. A model saying looks aren't everything? People rarely care.
I think she struck a good balance between highlighting the ups and downs not just for her, but for everyone, which is difficult when coming from a position where people are less likely to value your words.

Why are people still ignoring the point of this talk? She's literally admitting her privilege and pointing out both the biases and superficiality of the fashion industry (which can severely affect the body and beauty image of young girls everywhere) and the way people judge others based solely on physical appearance (RACE, gender, weight, hair color etc). The first part to fixing a problem is letting it be known. But if you ignore her message because you're actually just jealous she was lucky enough to be born physically attractive, you're LITERALLY contributing to the problem. This is an important message.

TheAlphadog I understand your points, it really all boils down to personal opinion and how the individual perceives these issues. The most significant part for me, though, is concerning young girls. I do disagree with you on that, only because girls in these newer generations (due to the accessibility of social media and the presence of advertisements everywhere) are almost always surrounded by what society considers the ideal body type/beauty. Usually the ideal is portrayed as a beautiful woman with lovely skin and a fit body, perfect hair teeth and nails, etc. If the girl doesn't have a strong enough body image of herself (you know, the low self esteem middle school years are super common) nor is she taught to realize that the people presented to her in ads/social media aren't necessarily 'attainable' (not sure how to word this part my apologies) she might become desperate to achieve these ideals and do something dangerous like starve herself or even become depressed. It's the same for boys too, I'm sure many have gone through periods of low self esteem and depression due to not being 'ideal' (ofc I don't know for sure, I wouldn't know what it's like to grow up as a boy in this age). Mostly I just support the fashion industry introducing images of health rather than unattainable beauty, ethnic diversity for poc representation (a young latina girl may not feel beautiful if the only beautiful women she knows about are all white, for example) that sort of thing. Education in general needs a lot of work, but we can't forget that children retain a lot of information from social media/advertising. It's like another educational outlet, so we gotta make sure they're not contributing anything potentially harmful. xx

You're wrong. Society doesn't "tell" people what is beautiful, that's just ridiculous. Have you ever had a friend who thought someone was super attractive, but you didn't find them that way yourself? Attraction has everything to do with biology and you perception of healthy. All those things you listed are signals of a healthy person that our subconscious picks up on so we can attempt to reproduce with them. Has nothing to do with the media.
I agree with you on body image though, but seeing as how the average weight has started to go up and obesity has increased, heart diseases also. There should be a limit to what we actually tell young girls and boys. There are more benefits for a person to being fit, eating healthy and exercising than there is to eat bad foods and being told to love yourself anyway. That is completely backwards.
Everything else though I completely agree, but unfortunately, you live in a free market society. So magazines can publish what they want depending on the demand.

    • @KanitahKay
      @KanitahKay 9 років тому +13

TheAlphadog It's not blatant, I just personally believe having a majority unattainable image is subtle enough to cause harm to any young person who may not know better. A shift towards healthy bodies is definitely the move. If ads only include vv beautiful and the vv skinny, kids won't know that not everybody can obtain that body healthily. But you're right, it depends on demand. Money over all :(

People don't get that she acknowledges this fact and actually tells us that she's priviliged with her looks and skin color. She never denied this and stays very factual about her privileges in comparison to those that don't have the same privilege as they don't fit the discription box. Being pretty paid her all the way to college but she wants to acomplish more in life then her looks and this Ted Talk was a part of it. Her insta is also very activist orientated and I applaud her for that.
She has substance and we are now left with a generation of instagram teens that think everything that glitters turns into gold. They would have to see this to understand that there is more in life than having 100k followers and up.

It favors the pretty ones and you have no control whether or not you will get that gene, so don't weight your happiness on your look because you will end up unhappy. Don't over look all the things you could be doing that don't require winning genetic lotteries. The story she's conveyed is not really appealing to most people but hey, she's told us her story with a good and honest heart from her specific background. You don't have to be poor, in suffered or disadvantaged minorities or community to have a stand to talk of what you want like hey you're white you should not talk of the black, you're rich you have no right to talk of the poor, you're beautiful you have no idea of the ugly, and so on. yes, that's so true. I have been struggling with self confidence for my whole life, but there is so much more to live for than your looks. We're humans, life is too short to let our looks define us. We know what is best for ourselves, we should be kind to ourselves, and whatever holds true to us is who we really are. Anyone should be allowed share what they would like, because judgement and stigma should not stop us from having a voice.

She is saying that as somebody who inherited good looks and made a career based on that, it doesn't mean that her life is always fabulous or that she is constantly happy and self contented. In fact she is MORE insecure than the average person because she knows she only has a career because of how she looks, not because she did anything to deserve it.

how can you say she didn't deserved it? she is a model bc she took care of her physical appearance more and that's an effort. • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 8 років тому +77

      saniyauzumaki
I didn't say she "didn't deserve it". I said being tall, white, with fair skin and a pretty face are not something a person "deserves" through having done anything to earn them. You either get lucky in the gene pool or you don't.
It's not like you can go to college and learn how to be tall, slim and pretty like you can go there to earn a degree and get a career that way.
Therefore it is not something that is "deserved" or not deserved it is mostly just luck of the draw.
Yes I am sure she eats well and exercises....which are things everybody should do, not just models. That doesn't mean anything.

can we all just appreciate her for actually admitting that her looks have helped her in life, because quite a lot of good-looking people through no fault of their own, who have been given this privilege and have been treated better by everyone because of it, just don’t realise it.
I’m a not so attractive lad, and believe me, LOOKS MATTER SO MUCH! they really do. and it’s not just the opposite gender that treat u better, it’s friends, aunties, uncles, colleagues, kids, elders, teachers, strangers as well...
I’m not saying looks are everything but oh my, they do matter a lot. I remember having a good looking best friend in high school who had the most boring personality ever and still made a lot of more friends than me. And girls would roll out a red carpet for him. She's gorgeous and its good that's she's clearly self aware enough to recognize that it has benefited her greatly (surprised she didn't mention her families affluence more though), and that's all that matters, it's no more her fault that the world desires her than it the fault of a person who can't even look good in the dark that the world does not.

She is saying that it IS important, but that it SHOULDN'T BE. She is being so brave and vulnerable by standing up on stage and admitting that the world she benefits from is the same world others get hurt by. You can't criticize a model for being blind to her privileges and then criticize her for seeing and standing up against those same privileges. She can't change the way she looks and how the world favors her, so I commend her for doing SOMETHING to combat this issue.

This took guts, both in terms of coming to grips with the only personal reality she's ever known, and in terms of calling it how it is in the face of impending professional backlash. Did she cure cancer? No. But you have to appreciate her candidness and honesty in spite of an industry largely shrouded in a mum's-the-word approach to results transparency.

***** Not really. I've seen a few behind the scenes of a fashion runaway. And a few of the make-up artists, stylist and designers have vocalized their preference for aware/ smart models. They're not all stuck-up and unaware; or even unconcerned about the trappings of superficiality of their business. In fact, they're more aware of it than most, arguably. And people like Cameron Russell may indeed find like minded people in her business; sympathetic and understand the pros and cons of a constructed image-emphasized work environment.
And it's not like she did a Katherine Heigl, wherein she outright dismissed the industry. Cameron Russell actually inspired her would-be predecessors to aim higher than a model. 'BE HER BOSS' - if they want to be in this type of work.
Anyways, she also said she "was" a model, meaning she might have retired. I don't know, I've only just heard of her after seeing this video.
Ah, this comment is to the 'she probably just eight-balled herself by this talk.'

I know I am a guy but I feel like a lot of what she has said can be transferred to a male perspective. I am a 23 year old guy who has only grown into my looks and from what I've personally experienced we truly live in a shallow world. From the ages of 16 until 21-22 I was an awkward looking thing; weedy with a narrow long face. During that phase the reception and general judgement I would receive from people tended to be dismissive. Now that I have blossomed into someone of an average build and am now apparently aesthetically considered' above average' (whatever that means) the manner in which the world perceives me has transformed. Now all of a sudden women are more forgiving of my faults and mistakes and I've now become more desirable to the opposite sex. When I dwell on how different my life is just because of my outward appearance it really fills me with real sadness. Looks shouldn't matter but unfortunately due to the media's constant indoctrination of what is considered conventionally appealing people do give greater gravitas to appearance.

What's up with all the stupid "hot white chick tells us beauty isn't everything" comments? Did you even listen to a word she said?
She is saying exactly the opposite - that her success is thanks to her beauty which is the result of a genetic lottery, and also thanks to legacy of racial/cultural oppression. She is honest - if you aren't white or beautiful you need to find another way to succeed. And in the meantime - let's try and change the society so that it isn't so for future generations. Brutal and honest. Great talk.

Great speech. Honest, humble, thoughtful. Very intelligent too. And I like it that she cares for those almost 80 percent young girls who don't like their own bodies because of how the fashion industry creates a false image of what a human being really looks like.

People without money always think money is everything. Well it's not, sorry. Money is certainly something- it gives you comfort, but it's most definitely not everything. I've known plenty of miserable people with money- I can even think of one who committed suicide :(

why are people ignoring the point of this talk?! she was so amazing, her talk was powerful. she admitted and voiced the dark side of being a model that no one knows. she showed us models are just as insecure or maybe even more insecure than us. and that’s just one part of it. she didn’t talk about how they need to count calories and make crazy diets to look beautiful and skinny. a lot of girls go through instagram, looking at model girls and doesn’t even realize that is not true. in the end, we are all the same. and we are the ones putting so much pressure on ourselves

She isn't saying looks aren't important. What she means is that they are not the only thing that matters in life.
Or in other words, they are not everything.

Of course, if I am a clam who do not have basic social skills, I will be ruined anyhow. But trust me, a good looking clam will get more things than an ugly looking clam. Anything + good looks = nicer

@@guilles8905 that's the point of all this?? like, everyone complaining but she DID say how her looks helped her a lot in life and how other people treat her better because she's pretty... she said that being pretty isn't EVERYTHING. model and all, the modeling industry can make the prettiest woman insecure and miserable

    • @guilles8905

@@yutisima Do you notice than saying it doesn't invalidate it or make her more honest etc., right? We all know that. Of course pretty people can be good people too (how cool is that!!!!). Seriously, she needs to get in touch with a specialist in psychology, it looks like she did this talk for her.
Btw, like it or not, she will never need to go through things like the ugly do. It is very easy to comment on stuff from a safe distance.

@@guilles8905 "It is very easy to comment on stuff from a safe distance" how curious... literally the same applies to you, to me etc. we will NEVER know what is like to be a model in the industry, and STILL people criticize her for the title of the video, as if they didn't LISTEN to what she said. "it looks like she did this talk to herself" OF COURSE SE DID??? it's literally about the MODELLING INDUSTRY. she speaks about the things models go trough that people like us DON'T SEE because we believe that being rich and pretty and a model is the best thing that can happen to a person, but we don't know what it is like, and she's telling you what it is like, and you still. don't. listen.
