- In this video, I will once again be getting you up to date on the latest in the AR & VR space. First of all, we will jump into a few new features that people have found in the Quest v64 PTC. I am personally quite excited about some of these features, for example, Controller emulation with hand tracking, Quest 3 augments, USB external Microphone support, better dynamic range in passthrough, changing release channels inside your headset and quite a few more. These seem to be undocumented changes for now that are being noticed by people using the PTC. I think that's really cool. After this, we will move on to Meta, for some reason only allowing a handful of developers to turn off the guardian boundary in their AR apps as well as Meta still planning on releasing the Quest 3S in China. We also gave info on Better Apple spatial videos as well as a new Apple pencil that has Vision Pro support! I hope you enjoy the video :D

Im tester for every new PTC versions in a first wave and yes, I can confirm that pass-through is now in better shape :) External mic is too working pretty well on teams in calls.
Did they fix scoped storage?
Yup just installed the PTC version and I can instantly tell a difference in pass through mode! :)

Something pretty big just happened. Quest modding for beat Saber got updated from 1.28 to 1.35! I like how I can play modded songs now with new haptics and 120hz on quest 3.
you could always use 120hz on 1.28
@@SouthPokey Sure I could use it with side quest, but now it’s built in the game settings and it feels a lot nicer imo
There is a setting on 1.35 in graphics that enables 120hz mode on vanilla beat saber.

Yea lol! Echo arena was the only game I played before it shut down. Unfortunately, not many people know what it means 😔. I wish I could join the lan event but I am traveling to the southern US. But if it’s digital I will.
Possible reason for whitelisting specific apps only: an XR app can have moments where the surroundings are fully blocked by virtual elements or scenes. Those would have the same need for the guardian system as any VR app. So Meta might want to check, if an app features such content before whitelisting it for guardian opt-out for legal/safety reasons.
I’m on v64 PTC and my pass through is noticeably better. I spend a lot of time in pass through and this is much easier on the eyes and as mentioned it’s easier to see external screens like your phone.

Contoller emulation via hand tracking could be interesting! ALVR actually already has an implementation of this and it works pretty well (excluding analog sticks which I didn't have as good of an experience with as the rest of the buttons, but those were added only about half a year ago) so if an open-source project with 80 contributors can pull it off, Meta could certainly do it!

Trying to get GeForce Now on the quest is a pain, especially since I already have it on my phone; or play my steam deck on a large AR screen.

For me, pass through looks 10x better now then a few weeks ago.

Love the idea of using hands as controllers. I also hope they implement using the quest controllers (hands too maybe) to emulate xInput for Xbox and Steam and whatever else uses a gamepad. That way I don’t have to connect an Xbox controller to play flatscreen games.
Thinking about it just now, I wonder if steam input might be able to do this. I know VRoom exists for this kind of purpose, but I don’t think it’s been updated for some time and it doesn’t support passthrough which is something else I appreciate about using a side loaded steam app or gamepass app.
The more input methods we have available, the wider the accessibility is. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll be able to use voice as the input method instead of hands or buttons.

The release channel feature wasnt added in v64, im still stuck on v62 and have had it for a few weeks.
could i enable augments on quest 2? probably not but the quest 3 just has a depth sensor and the color cameras arent used for tracking, only video

i just disabled the hand tracking today on my Q3 because it is so annoyingly buggy i rather not use it at all. so im skeptic the controller emulation will be usable compared to actually using controllers...

Thanks for all the list of possible features for the Quest 3. I am a little confused on what is the PTC Quest 3???? Is that some special software update to the Quest 3, or is it a completely different device called PTC Quest 3 with 64 bit???
Looking on Google, I take it the PTC version is kind of a firmware beta for the Quest 3 should we want to sign up for it and expect bugs in this software till improved. Is that true???
I just bought my Quest 3 several weeks ago, so I assume mine is just the Meta Quest 3 with 512 gb of memory.

Public Test Channel.
Yes, there are only two Quest 3 types at this time, the one you have and the one with Jess storage.
Basically, the PTC thing is just a software version you can opt in to. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, you'll get all the same features once they've been polished up without using the PTC version.

Public Test channel is for people who don't want to wait as long for the latest software updates. Opting in means less stability and a chance to potentially brick your Quest if you happen to get a bugged install.

its not possible, the cameras dont pick up color. if you want color passthrough, just upgrade. quest 2 is losing support soon either way

I was watching this on my phone as I put my quest 3 on to see if I am on v64 (I am) and then I hear you say that some phones have been better and YES THEY ARE I used to have to se my phone to really low brightness to see the screen but now I can read it clearly at max brightness
The guardian whitelist for MR is because there they don't have a way to algorithmically determine the user is safe or not.
Yes, you can see your real environment but you're also actively blocking elements of it from the user ever time you draw a virtual object. For something like Cubism it's pretty unlikely any puzzle blocks enough of their vision to cause this problem. The nature of the game doesn't really require you to make fast motions or move very far. Thus they're confident enough to put the game on the whitelist where the guardian can be disabled.
But take something like First Encounters. You are shooting holes in your real walls that lets you see through them. With every new hole you put in the wall your basically transitioning closer and closer to a fully immersive VR game. At some point you need the guardian to keep them safe and it's not trivial to determine when the user is no longer fully aware of their surroundings. Not to mention one player might stand in place and turn around where another could be literally running around their entire play area. It's not easy to 100% guarantee both players are safe without also using the guardian.
The easiest solution to keeping the user safe is to force the guardian to always be there as a backup except for when you very confident it's not an issue. Hence the whitelist.
That was my geuss as well. Millions of people allowed to disable the guardian would end up causing millions of lawsuits

The external microphone, and that's it. Quest 2 isn't an AR headset, and it lacks the sensors for newer hand tracking stuff, so that's a slim to no chance. Quest 2 software updates Peaked with the quest 3 launch

Is the boundry not needed to also shape the space for AR as it should know what is a wall, floor and ceiling?
But if it's the actual size that is limited, then i would like to see that it is at somepoint made limitless "optional" so you can make your hole house/apartment a working play space.
Just imagine beeing able to turn real doors into doors by placing a door there with the same size, then also placing the doorhandle and type where is actually is. So you then could open it by just open the real door and having the hand/controller "push" it open in the "game" as you actually open the door. Since you would not be able to move your hand/controller past the door if it's not open. Might be a problem when doors are open, and closed in the "game" But if the depth sensor can see trough it, it would know that you at least can open it by touching it

I wish Meta would confirm the specs of the Quest 3S soon so I can determine which headset to buy. But it seems we will have to wait till October since that is usually when they release details of new products.

The most ridiculous restriction on Q3 is passthough being disabled if boundary is turned off. Makes no sense unless it is meant to discourage turning off boundary.
When the boundry is off, it stays off in VR games, too. They can't let millions of kids turn off their boundaries. That's called a gigantic safety risk and lawsuits incoming. Augments will probably solve this issue with the select apps.

its a potential use safety issue removing the boundary, so just like apple. They will allow some trusted developers to trail it before deciding if it should or shouldnt be rolled out to all developers.

That’s just the Meta ways. I few years ago when meta (back then Facebook) brought games into messenger, my friends started to play with one of the games. I wanted to play but the games weren’t available for me, every phone I logged into my account I just got the older version of messenger, but the version number was the newest. When someone logged into his account on my phone, he get the new functions, but I couldn’t.
