I was in the crowd on this night. I was thrilled that it was at Hammersmith Odeon in London which was a fairly small venue to be seeing such a magnificent band. 21 year old me was about 12 rows from the front. Johns Illsleys bass guitar notes were actually thumping me in the chest. There was Mark Knopfler up on stage right in front of me playing the songs i'd listened to over and over on my record player (then later on my CD player). That sweet, clean, glassy Fender sound cutting through and gracing the strong, superb rhythmic roll the band had going. It was a magical night. I had been a fan for about 5 years when my mate said he had tickets i nearly bit his hand off. A truly memorable night. His playing to this day still moves me and always make me wish for more. Mark Knopfler... one of the all-time greats. 🎸 And yes I knew when I went to see them back in 1985 at an outdoor arena just outside Chicago, that I was going to be witnessing greatness. I saw them live 46 years ago in Toronto. I never heard anything like it before or since. The story goes that drummer Terry's father was in the audience, seeing his son perform live for the fist time. He played the tempo faster because he was so stoked. You can see the other musicians looking back at Terry with big smiles. That was the most over the top performance Dire Straits ever played. Imagine waiting the whole show for the band to play this song only to have it be the final song of the encore and then to have it be such an epic iteration of the recorded version. This performance is legendary.
So sorry for all the young people who missed all this great music. Mark is a humble man who is the star but has no problem sharing the stage with his fellow guitar players. The drummer is on it!! A truly great band. 1977 or thereabouts. This is greatness. You'll never hear music like this today. Live and unfiltered. So glad you loved it❤.
Well, you know the crowd felt it and you felt that I felt it and we weren’t even there. I saw them in 1985 in Sacramento California with my wife wife they put on a great show but not that damn good. Oh man that was great.
You are a joy to watch. There are many great bands, and great talent, but for me Dire Straits is no 1. Mark is amazing; writing, composing, playing and his bandmates are equally talented in their own right. Put it all together and you have a timeless masterpiece.
Great reaction. Loved every second of both the band playing-[none better] and your obvious delight in coming across such classic song from the late '70's.
No Tunnel of Love from Wembley Arena 1985, when he's picking "Stop in the name of love" and "don't let me be misunderstood" in the preamble to the song. The closing solo is a work of art.
That drummer was playing live for the first time ever in front of his father, he was so much more than killing it that night. Imagine how proud his father was of him.
It's perfection you are reacting to so spontaneously and enthusiastically, you look like I feel everytime.... Perfection is so rarely seen or heard that we are just blown away when it comes our way. I really like your enthousiasm man! Gives good vibes! 😀 Drummer Terry Williams was insane, and Mark Knopfler... well... He is just so unique and in a league of it's own. Lots of reactors say they’ve never heard of Dire Straits or even this song; I believe YOU ‼️ Liked, subbed, commented. Blessings always 😊
Thank you so much Mina
Was the first live gig for the new drummer, Terry Williams, and his father was in the audience. Say's a lot about the reason for this performance.
Dude, I loved how much you loved the performance.
Im SO glad I grew up in the generation this music came from - I challenge ANY rap star to come up with a performance that beats THIS ONE.
Lovely to see you bopping in your chair
Always!
Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar and vocals.
Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar
John Illsey, Bass guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, keys
And for these shows July 1983 additional guest keys, Tommy Mandel
Imagine waiting the whole show for the band to play this song only to have it be the final song of the encore and then to have it be such an epic iteration of the recorded version. This performance is legendary.
I’m the same age as Mark 74, he still plays today. I’ve seen them twice way back in the day. This is my favourite song and group of all time. ❤
Recorded in '83 or '84, I think.

It’s So sweet to see you have so much fun ❤❤. Yeah they are fantastic and in my opinion Mark Knopfler is the best guitarist ever 🎉
I absolutely love how enthusiastic you were watching this, a joy to watch
Love your reation. They said after the 3rd album. WE ARE IN DIRE STRAITS.Nuff said
I completly understand your response. I enjoyed since 1978. Still do!
Oh yeah. I’ll try to share some that will inspire you.
BEST REACTION TO THIS SONG EVER!!!!! CHAMPION!
Well, you know the crowd felt it and you felt that I felt it and we weren’t even there. I saw them in 1985 in Sacramento California with my wife wife they put on a great show but not that damn good. Oh man that was great.
This is REAL MUSIC. ❤
AND YOU KNOW IT! You're new to me and I'm a new subscriber. What a great guy you must be! ❤
I'm okay. Trying to be better!
This is their first song.
Next stop: Tunnel of Love, from the same concert 😉
No Tunnel of Love from Wembley Arena 1985, when he's picking "Stop in the name of love" and "don't let me be misunderstood" in the preamble to the song. The closing solo is a work of art.
I never tire of listening to this out-of-this-world Dire Straits masterclass. And witnessing your discovery of it was a joy.
One of my favorite reactions ever, fuckin awesome, good job 😀.
Man, it's so much fun to watch you enjoy this masterpiece! 👍👍❤️
Glad you liked it. 😎
So good
Great performance. Great pick Never! ☘️🇺🇲
Thanks man!
"This was illegal" 😂 THANK YOU for the reaction❤
Terry Williams,, the reason I play drums,,took me nearly 8 years to nail the sticking 🤟🏴
That drummer was playing live for the first time ever in front of his father, he was so much more than killing it that night. Imagine how proud his father was of him.
Your pure joy is absolutely fantastic to see, big smile and laughs here, thank you😊
Never tired listenning...
Such a classic
It's perfection you are reacting to so spontaneously and enthusiastically, you look like I feel everytime.... Perfection is so rarely seen or heard that we are just blown away when it comes our way. This shows us our potential in whatever field we are into... This is perfection in the music field..... Love your reaction!!!
Hi from Spain! Huge fan of DS here! I really really enjoyed your reaction! this is how I feel every time I listen DS! Your happiness and expression of it is priceless!
Thank you so much!!
I've been a fan for 40 years. Got to see Mark put on a fantastic solo show in Indy 20 years ago. One of the best I've seen.
I really like your enthousiasm man! Gives good vibes! 😀 Drummer Terry Williams was insane, and Mark Knopfler... well... He is just so unique and in a league of it's own. Terry used everything, but if you focus on Mark... I't just like he is doing his groceries on a Saterday afternoon, with all the time in the world.. Meanwhile talking and leading the band.... His limits are the band itself... He is IMO The ALL time and by far the greatest guitarist ever.
I'm 64 .and we need to get real music back.
Same here, Jean 🎉
Loved your reaction.
We all feel the same way watching this amazing performance.
-Cheers from Vancouver, Canada
Great reaction, sir!
Great reaction to a truly great performance. There was magic in the air that night. The drummer was right on it, never missed a beat, great performance by all of them with great timing and spirit.
Oh my sweet lord I love this song and seeing your response to it was pure joy. I was feeling that with you. AWESOME POST thank you so much. Respect!!!
