- *"Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits: The Ultimate Rock Classic*
Welcome to our channel! Today, we dive into one of the most iconic rock songs of all time, "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits. This track is a timeless masterpiece that has captivated audiences for decades. Let's take an in-depth look at its history, lyrics, impact, and legacy.
Released in 1978, "Sultans of Swing" is the debut single by the British rock band Dire Straits, led by frontman Mark Knopfler. The song, known for its distinctive guitar work and catchy rhythm, quickly established Dire Straits as a formidable presence in the music world. It is a quintessential example of rock and roll, blending elements of jazz and blues to create a unique sound.
"Sultans of Swing" was recorded in 1977 and released as a single in 1978. The song appeared on Dire Straits' self-titled debut album, which showcased the band's minimalist style and Knopfler's virtuoso guitar playing. The track gained popularity initially on BBC Radio London, leading to a recording contract with Phonogram Records. Upon its release, "Sultans of Swing" quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top ten in both the UK and US.
The lyrics of "Sultans of Swing" tell the story of a down-and-out jazz band playing in a nearly empty pub. Knopfler's narrative style paints a vivid picture of the scene, capturing the atmosphere of the smoky bar and the dedication of the musicians who play not for fame or fortune, but for the love of music. The chorus, with its memorable line "You feel alright when you hear the music ring," encapsulates the transformative power of music.
Musically, "Sultans of Swing" is characterized by its clean, finger-picked guitar lines and Knopfler's laid-back vocal delivery. The song's distinctive guitar solo is often cited as one of the greatest in rock history, showcasing Knopfler's fluid technique and expressive phrasing. The rhythm section, featuring John Illsley on bass and Pick Withers on drums, provides a solid foundation, while the song's arrangement allows each instrument to shine.
"Sultans of Swing" was a commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and number eight on the UK Singles Chart. The song's popularity helped propel Dire Straits' debut album to platinum status, and it remains a staple of classic rock radio to this day. In 1979, "Sultans of Swing" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
Over the years, "Sultans of Swing" has become a favorite in Dire Straits' live performances. The band often extended the song's instrumental sections in concert, allowing Knopfler to showcase his improvisational skills. Notable live performances include their appearance at Live Aid in 1985 and their concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983, which was released as part of the "Alchemy: Dire Straits Live" album.
The song has also been covered by numerous artists across different genres, each bringing their own interpretation to the track. These covers range from acoustic renditions to full-band arrangements, demonstrating the song's versatility and enduring appeal.
The legacy of "Sultans of Swing" is evident in its continued popularity and the influence it has had on other musicians. The song has inspired countless guitarists to pick up the instrument and learn its iconic riffs and solos. It has been featured in various movies, TV shows, and commercials, further cementing its place in popular culture.
The creation of "Sultans of Swing" is a testament to Mark Knopfler's songwriting and guitar-playing prowess. The song was recorded at Pathway Studios in North London, with the band opting for a live, unembellished sound. This approach highlighted the musicianship of each band member and gave the track an organic, authentic feel.

@@bigbruno56 Absolute nonsense. Watch him again. Je was full of vigour, passion and confidence.
And that, little kiddies is how your grandparents play music.
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT-!!!
He did, now get off my lawn
Musicianship versus today’s computer technicians.
You nailed it!
Best comment !!
The good news is that you can watch this performance a hundred times and it NEVER disappoints. The little guitar solo that Mark plays before the song picks up tempo again is the sweetest lullaby I have ever heard.
Very good point, really never does, since the day it was released!! And I'm old school born in 63!
@@d.lawrence8059 I was born in 05 and I feel the same way. 2005 to be specific.
it’s true i’ve done it
One of the most enthusiastic reactions I've ever seen.
Probably one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. This is how music should make you feel, if you have a heartbeat left in your body. Dire Straits with Mark Knoefler on lead guitar left a legacy that will live as long as there is electricity..
That entire live DVD is F I R E. I still think Telegraph Road from the same show tops this tho.
I will check that one out too
Perfectly said!!💜💜🤘🤘🎶🎼🎵
As a 70 year old lady, my friends and I, had the joy, privilege to see DS live. Utter joy. They make the crowd another part of their band. ❤❤❤❤
What A time! you have encountered a special moment in your life 😊, that's a such a privilege
@@nadjibe I am a 70-year-old Londoner: Pink Floyd in 1973 at Earls Court..Led Zeppelin 1975@ Wembley Arena and both Deep Purple and the following week Creedence Clearwater Revival @ the Royal Albert Hall so 4 Concerts for 4 World Class Bandsin the 1970s at 3 World Class venues and THe Total Cost ??
........."2.25" or Three Dollars...£1 + 75pence + 25pence x 2...lol
Every culture, race, gender….is moved to some other realm during this performance. NEVER disappoints!
Rumour has it that if David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler played guitar in the same room and the same time, there would be a rip in the spacetime continuum! 😉
I guess Douglas Adams started this rumor 😂
Yeah
One of the greatest live musical performances of all time.
Are there ones that came close in your opinion?
@@theneverenderreacts Early 80s in my late teens listening to vinyl records with friends... and now rediscovering the bands, the music, the memories and the feelings thanks to a time machine named UA-cam. Dire Straits weren’t top of the list for me but I *do* remember them. They did their best to look really stupid and goophy in the pictures on the record sleeve and one evening we were stoned laughing our heads off looking at those photos. One of my favourite acts was Thin Lizzy. Now after more than 40 years I’m going nuts over them again. A big reason for that is a live performance from 1975. They covered various genres but are mostly known for being straight up rock ‘n roll. If you’re into that check out “THIN LIZZY - LIVE AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM (1975)”. Brian Robertson delivers my all time favourite guitar solo on “Showdown” - he’s the curly white guy in the black shirt and he was 19 years old at the time. It’s a fabulous live performance fully on par with Dire Straits here.
@@theneverenderreacts Judas Priest - Victim of changes (live 1983) Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner (flight 666 version) and Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name (live Hammersmith 1982) you cant go wrong with any of these performances, all epic!
@@theneverenderreacts One live performance in particular that is often mentioned as "the greatest" (if any one performance can be that), is Queen at the Live Aid gala in 1985. That's not one song though, but rather a medley of their most well known/loved tunes.
That performance has since become legendary for how skillfully the act was pulled off even with Freddy Mercury still recovering from a throat infection which made him unable to turn his mighty voice up to 11, crushing David Bowie who was set to be the next performer, and as the band walked off the stage, Bowie allegedly shot off a "you bastards!" jokingly at them. :)
And the Band looked as they actually enjoyed themselves whilst playing.
That's the important thing. Losing yourself in doing what you love
Same concert...Telegraph Road...a true masterpiece.
Will check it out thank you
@@theneverenderreacts
Yes, I second that. The way you so obviously got what made this so amazing and were really feeling it, I think you'll truly dig Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live. Another GOAT performance, tbh.
The special thing about Mark Knopfler: He is one of the funkiest and at the same time most lyrical guitarists ever.
What a great reaction! I'm old and feel worn out. Thank you!
No you're not. The spirit is there!!
I'm 77 and I remember when they hit the road running with this and the rest is history ! The phenomena that is Dire Straits in full flow. - Peerless !!!! Now Mark is around 70 himself and still playing with a level of perfection that most of us can only dream of - and all without a pick !
This has to be the best reaction I have seen!
I appreciate that really
Agree.
Telegraph Road from this concert is even better believe it or not. The whole concert is great. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
I will check that one out. Thank you!
Straight up fact! Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live is my favourite live performance of any song, by any band!
@@davidlukey5189 he just uploaded the reaction to that one
I have seen at least 40 performances of SOS. My favorite piece of music,my fav band, my fav guitarist and at 20 different reviewers of which 3 or 4 i like very much. However, you Sir !!! You,whoever you are OUTSTANDING ! This was first time ever that i watched the reviewer more than the band. From the get go your pure joy gave me a rush that made my head spin and my feet go nuts. Im 83,fragile female who does not take a step without my walker. Not sure what i did during that 11 minutes, but i wont do it again....i was exhausted! You gave a smart review and your enthusiasm fueled a fire in your listeners. Thank you so much. I did subscribe.
Wow ‼️ I watched the reactor more than the performance. He’s obviously real, and it seems he feels as I do whilst listening to this amazing song. Liked and subbed also. Cheers mate. 🎉
He's telling a story about going into a small club where a jazz band is playing. The band playing jazz calls themselves The Sultans of Swing. Guitar George and Harry are members of The Sultans.
Your reaction is joyous. 💖
This man is the poet of rock guitar...
I had the chance to watch it live. I am lucky...
Same 80,82 and 85
I was there!
It was amazing!
But as you say, you don't appreciate how amazing it is until years later, 40 years later!
I was 18 at the time and it is still a standout, even after all these years.
We were on the balcony, a few rows from the front, almost in shot and the balcony was jumping!
We're lucky they recorded it.
We knew they were good, very good, but the star at the time was Terry Williams on the drums, best drumming I've seen live.
I love your reaction, I think you need a rest.
By the way, they played like that for over 2 hours
You must see Telegraph Road
Awesome mate!! What a legend!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Yet another great British Band ruling the world! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great reaction, dude. You felt every moment
If you look close, he doesn't use a pick he picks the strings with his fingers! This band was awesome back in the day on so many different levels
Not only does he not use a pick, he is also naturally left handed and plays right handed
I've been a Dire Straits, and Mark Knopfler, fan since 1978. I had never seen this video until about 3 months ago, and now I'm a fan all over again. I've now watched it, and enjoyed the "reactions" by various people, maybe 3 dozen times. It never gets old and I get chills EVERY time I hear it. This has to be regarded as one of the best live performances of ANY band of all time.
The emotion you find hard to describe is just pure joy. Understandable. Loved this reaction. I felt it, too.
Thank you!
One of the best reactions mate! That's how this song makes me feel over and over again! Well done champ!
Props to the drummer, those fills are clean as you'll get.
Mark Knopfler... one of the all-time greats. 🎸
And yes I knew when I went to see them back in 1985 at an outdoor arena just outside Chicago, that I was going to be witnessing greatness. It's one of the reasons you sit in 2 hour traffic jams on narrow suburban roads not built to hold that much traffic. Because everything you've heard from them up to that point tells you there's going to be a payoff that makes it all worth it. They did NOT disappoint!! One of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Check out the studio version of "Lady Writer" by them next.
Man it was worth it huh? I never have been to a concert. I need to change that soon!
@@rivaldovola9896 a big professional concert by a big time act is something everyone should experience at least once.
First time I saw them was at Red Rocks. Amazing. Since then I’ve seen Dire and Mark Knopfler 6 times. Every time great.
@@roberteberle2305 cool! Red Rock looks like an amazing venue from what I've seen on TV.
Pretty sure I was there also, was the venue called Ravinia?
At the time this was probably one of the most devastating live bands in the world.
That was A GREAT REACTION BRO! This is what we, people who like reaction videos, want to see: The reactor 100% immersed in the material the person is reacting (not pausing a lot and for too long, not looking at the camera while the video is playing, etc). Wish you the best Bro, you have great energia!
I appreciate that
I was lucky to have seen Dire Straits twice back in the 80's. I still listen to them to this day.
True showman. They record a legendary track that's a hit around the world, then perform it live to an exponential level of amazingness!! That's how to give concert goers their moneys worth! Not like today's music world where anybody can record hit music on their laptop, no this was raw talent at its finest on display here folk!
Yep!
"Like a marriage!" Exactly! In the land of groove, this performance ruled on the throne of swing! ♥
What other song would you suggest?
I'm not sure if you remember me, but I sent you a message when you reacted to the great Juan Gabriel.
Now i must to send you a message again because you just discovered one of my prefer bands of all time. In the year 1985 or so i bought the same day their first 5 Long Plays, one of the the Alchemy, that is the live recopilatory LP of this concert.
Some years after I bought the LP Brothers in arms as well.
I know that someday you'll react to the song Telegraph Road in this same concert. You never will forget that performance after you see it, because is amazing. Thanks for make happy!!
Best reaction I've seen to this performance .... !!!
Next stop: Tunnel of Love, from the same concert 😉
No Tunnel of Love from Wembley Arena 1985, when he's picking "Stop in the name of love" and "don't let me be misunderstood" in the preamble to the song. The closing solo is a work of art.
Clicked on this out of sheer morbid curiosity...but, I love it when people discover the joys of "our" older tunes and experience it with the same joy we did.
There is a reason why these tunes seem to just hang on forever.
Thank you! It is so good to see you enjoy the music of our generation!
Was the first live gig for the new drummer, Terry Williams, and his father was in the audience. Say's a lot about the reason for this performance.
So sorry for all the young people who missed all this great music. Mark is a humble man who is the star but has no problem sharing the stage with his fellow guitar players. The drummer is on it!! A truly great band. 1977 or thereabouts. This is greatness. You'll never hear music like this today. Live and unfiltered. So glad you loved it❤.
Recorded in '83 or '84, I think.
@@scottrobinson11141983 Hammersmith odeon, West London, 👍
The reactor is correct--they were all amazing. I don't know how people are able to perform like this--and what's even more important, they all appeared to really enjoy themselves--God bless them!
Oh my God! I love watching you!! Your wonderful enthusiasm and love for great music is wonderful to see. You made me smile :-) Subscribed.
Thank you so much!!
Lovely to see you bopping in your chair
Always!
The crowd keeping the tempo and you were there living what everyone was feeling this was the most energetic reaction I've seen 😊
Thanks bro!!!! When it comes to music, you just get it.
I love what I do bro. Hope to have put a smile on people face
It’s So sweet to see you have so much fun ❤❤. Yeah they are fantastic and in my opinion Mark Knopfler is the best guitarist ever 🎉
That was some serious workout! 😂
Great reaction - This is one of my favourite Lives.
All best!
Glad you enjoyed it
I never tire of listening to this out-of-this-world Dire Straits masterclass. And witnessing your discovery of it was a joy.
Im SO glad I grew up in the generation this music came from - I challenge ANY rap star to come up with a performance that beats THIS ONE.
I saw them live 46 years ago in Toronto. I never heard anything like it before or since. The story goes that drummer Terry's father was in the audience, seeing his son perform live for the fist time. He played the tempo faster because he was so stoked. You can see the other musicians looking back at Terry with big smiles. That was the most over the top performance Dire Straits ever played. You only had to see them once, and you knew it was a very special moment in your life. It looked like you enjoyed yourself! 😝
I’m the same age as Mark 74, he still plays today. I’ve seen them twice way back in the day. This is my favourite song and group of all time. ❤
Loved your reaction to the song. You definitely wear your heart on your sleeve. You showed me what I feel inside every time I see this live version. I totally get how you feel. It is always fun! Great comments. You are spot on in your appreciation of this video.
I TOTALLY agree with your point! 😇
I'm 57 years old and have listened to rock and all kinds of music my whole life and my friends and I get together and play music in the backyard and have a blast. I am a huge guitar fan and have been since I was a kid. I don't know how many times I've watched this performance I have seen over 100 Bands in concert and many of them 5 to 10 times. I never got a chance to see dire straits. He is one of the top five guitar players in all of the world in my humble opinion
There is a story, not sure if its true, but someone once asked Prince what it was like to be the greatest guitarist that ever lived. Prince responded, "I wouldn't know. You'd have to ask Mark Knopfler."
best reaction to this recording ever! I dance along and say to the screen 'Yes, they were amazing!' Mark Knopfler is still amazing, just more on the enjoy the chilled sound now, even so latest album of his, as soon as I hear him playing and his voice I am in my happy happy place :-)
Yes! Terry Williams, the drummer, is definitely killing it!!!!
that drummer is out of this world, unbelievable 👍👍👍

I watch a lot of reaction videos and this is legit in the top 10 of all time. Your joy is infectious and so pure. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed!
Great reaction, sir!
Well, you know the crowd felt it and you felt that I felt it and we weren’t even there. I saw them in 1985 in Sacramento California with my wife wife they put on a great show but not that damn good. Oh man that was great.
I'm 64 .and we need to get real music back.
Same here, Jean 🎉
This performance makes my eyes water towards the ending instrumentals. Just the best!
OMGoodness, NeverEnder, your reaction is my favorite so far. I discovered this live performance a few weeks ago and have sorta gotten addicted to reaction videos for it. I can see the joy and happiness it brings you, just as it does for me. That solo that Mark Knopfler plays in the decrescendo, that tiny super high note, makes me almost cry. Lots of reactors say they’ve never heard of Dire Straits or even this song; I believe YOU ‼️ Liked, subbed, commented. Blessings always 😊
Thank you so much Mina
This is REAL MUSIC. ❤
AND YOU KNOW IT! You're new to me and I'm a new subscriber. What a great guy you must be! ❤
I'm okay. Trying to be better!
Nice to see someone appreciating good music.
I found dire straits album in my oldest brother's car left by previous owner, (VW GOLF MK2) that was my first time listening to it on my computer since then! Im all most 40 now, still the best jam I've ever heard
Great reaction to a truly great performance. There was magic in the air that night. The drummer was right on it, never missed a beat, great performance by all of them with great timing and spirit.
Terry Williams,, the reason I play drums,,took me nearly 8 years to nail the sticking 🤟🏴
If i only could listen too one song for the rest of my life , this is it.
Every member of the band had a great time , so fun playing.
The best guitar solo ever by Mark Knopler.
Seen it a thousand times, absolutely fantastic, never get's old!❤
I've been a Dire Straits fan for 40ish years and love seeing younger generations discovering them.

I completly understand your response. I enjoyed since 1978. Still do!
Oh yeah. I’ll try to share some that will inspire you.
Great reaction man. At first I was going to say that you were having too much fun with this one. But on second thought, no..., you actually had just the right amount of fun. Thanks.
So good to see MK pre- back injury. Wish I had the power to return him there.
Oh my sweet lord I love this song and seeing your response to it was pure joy. I was feeling that with you. AWESOME POST thank you so much. Respect!!!
You, sir, are one of the most enthusiastic reactors I've seen here. Good job.
Thank you very much
It's perfection you are reacting to so spontaneously and enthusiastically, you look like I feel everytime.... Perfection is so rarely seen or heard that we are just blown away when it comes our way. This shows us our potential in whatever field we are into... This is perfection in the music field..... Love your reaction!!!
