Hey Miles, so here's what I've learned in the last 40 years I've been actively making things. It is far more rare to be blessed with the ability to come up with unique and interesting ideas than it is to be blessed with the talent to carry them out. There are loads of talented people that can copy things to a very high standard. I know a number of people who can reproduce Chippendale or Greene and Greene furniture to equal or better standards than they did back in the day. Their skill is to be celebrated, acknowledged, and rewarded. However, that doesn't move design forward. People with vision and ideas do that. Your problem is that your creativity also includes the very real (and completely understandable) need to use your OWN hands as part of that creation. That is what they call in Chemistry the "rate limiting step". If your ideas are as plentiful as the video suggests, this is actually a blessing. Do not dump them. Draw them as detailed as possible and patent/publish them. You only have a finite amount of time, especially at this stage of your life, to dedicate to the making. Save that precious time for your most special designs to build yourself. But I'd encourage you to put the other (protected) designs out there for other makers to look at, make, and see what people gravitate to. You may have a winner out there you don't even recognize! Lastly, take advantage of this current burst of creativity and record as much as you can. There is no guarantee that creativity in your early life will persist in your later years. Creativity dries up more often than not. Adding and honing skills goes on pretty much indefinitely. Great stuff, as usual, and wishing you great success for the future.

"I've learned that there will be seasons of making and seasons of thinking, and sometimes when life or school gets busy, the best thing you can do is embrace that as a time for filling your cup with new ideas because eventually life will slow just enough to give you time to make those ideas reality."

As everyone else is saying, beautiful chair and your videos have become cinematic! As an old guy product designer, my advice is as you gain more success, make time and room to constantly experiment and grow. Too many creatives gain success with a formula and get stuck there afraid they'll lose their audience or reknown if they change. You have a brilliant future ahead of you!

I am 33, graduated with a BFA in 2013, and I feel like I am only just now getting a sense of 'what I want to be when I grow up' - and it basically looks something like you! That is to say: doing what I love & sharing the process and story with others. I'm amazed at your willfullness and clarity of purpose. Some people live 60+ years and never find that. Thanks for giving me this little reminder to not let the limitation of my tools/resources/time get in the way of *actualizing* my creative ideas. I had a similar problem last year in college. I love making stuff, so living in a small room 6 hours away from home messed me up. Sewing was one of the few 'crafty' things I could do there, so I bought a sewing machine and picked that up temporarily. Whenever I'd visit home, I'd spend all my time around my workbench.

Hey Miles, I discovered your videos today and I’m loving it. I recently bought a house with a big garage! And you inspired me to try and learn to make similar furniture. I’m loving your style.
I am a mechanical engineer, but I have zero experience with all the wood work you’re doing. Any chance that you’re interested in creating a video showing all the tools you have and what you do with them? The reason I’m asking is that I’m blown away by all the amazing tools that you’re using. I didn’t know many of them even existed!
You genuinely inspired me to try and learn even a fraction of your skill set. If you think this is a good video idea, you would greatly help me! Cheers.

Hey miles, this video is great. I've been struggling with creative build-up and being able to release and realize my ideas because of shortage of time, life, competing priorities, etc. I really liked the cinematic reflection at the beginning, and I'm super glad you're studying product design. Your message really resonated with me, and I feel I have a clearer head now, away from the cacophony that was my head before.
I hope you don't mind if I say a bit more about myself: I'm a student in my 20s in Hong Kong. I'm from Canada, and I've really enjoyed woodworking in my family home. Every summer in Canada i'd be excited to spend all my time in the workshop, working on projects that have built up in my ever-growing project to-do list. Then i'd work myself to the bone, day in and day out to complete them, and be satisfied by the end of it. But all that leaves when I have to return to Hong Kong for studies. This was the pattern all throughout high school. Being limited in Hong Kong, without my power tools or workshop space, confined to a place where I couldn't freely create and explore, I felt truly trapped, claustrophobic even. Buying wood here is genuinely difficult to find any pieces large enough or of good enough quality to use in larger scale projects. Lack of space means there isn't much possibility to make anything of reasonable size without struggle. Now currently in college studying digital media design, I'm looking to continue my studies in university in product design as well.
Lately, its been hard to focus with life going on, school, and the impending deadlines to apply to universities soon. But, seeing your video has given me a better sense of direction, and at least some relief that someone else, out there, has had these struggles too, even if not exactly the same. I'll work hard, develop my portfolio, and apply to my schools, and I hope that you'll not only enjoy, but thrive in your product design program! Keep at it dude!

It is *really* nicely done and amazing what skill you have already developed at such a young age. I was also fascinated how all those big chunky pieces came out nearly circular after using rhe router - you definitely had vision to be able to picture this and figure out how to make it happen, and I'd bet most people who might see the finished chair without having seen the video would never imagine all those smooth and rounded pieces started out as something that had *corners.* Very cool that you are studying design and wishing you all the best in this upcoming school year.

As a bit of a attention-to-detail designer my self, this is really really nice! You nailed the feeling and design which i know takes sooo long to get perfect. Right know I'm designing a concert grand piano really just based of the Steinway model D piano, about 150 hours in so far just cadding. Gotta love how every part looks, so it takes ages basically. Then I actually hope to make a 40cm miniature model of it using a massive resin 3d printer, and some cnc stuff + all the finishing processes with polishing and painting. But anyways, keep it up!

Unbelievably killer video. You took making that chair (an already Herculean task) and combined that with storytelling via filmmaking. Well done man. Such a pleasure to watch!

As a fellow artist, keep your ideas and sketches! Even the bad ones! They may not be useful to you now and may not turn into a fully fleshed out thing just yet but you can always come back to them later when you have the drive or a new version of your previous idea pops up. It can be frustrating to write out a whole plan for something and then not be able to make it, but sometimes all it needs is time to sit in your drafts for a bit before you get back into it
