Now make a Kumiko guitar case
God-level. Great work. You are seriously brave to do the Kumiko before you do the body contours and neck pocket. One of my kids still has a cutting board that started life as a gorgeous guitar body (not this gorgeous, but good by my standards) for which I slightly screwed up the neck pocket when I did that after I did the other parts. Never again - now I do the neck and pickups and cavity, then the contours, and only then the fancy stuff.
what is the music you were playing at the end?
@@pootaetoe1787 Just something I improvised!
@@MakeWithMiles i really want more of that it was amazing.
Hey dude, I’m 64, and I’ve seen master woodworkers create wonderful things, but this is something even they would be impressed with. Incredible job! You make the rest of us look sick. :-). Keep it up!
Wow! Really really cool. That is beautiful
Oh man, thanks Bobby! You don't realize how much that means to see you comment on my video. I hope you're doing well, and I can't wait to see what you're next creation is (I watch every video of yours)
you, my friend, are far too close to being a master for someone who’s only made 1 guitar before this. super fucking impressed. and that guitar+amp are both gorgeous!
Thank you so much Toby!
@@MakeWithMiles of course man!! keep up the great work:)
I couldn't agree more. You truly have a gift. Honestly, there's only one word I can think of right now. WOW
@@MakeWithMiles strats are considered to be light and slick, I was thinking if you made the same design on a les paul or gibson sg with a heavy headstock....that would look nice.
@@zeusolympus1664 Are they? I would think SGs are generally lighter. Smaller and thinner bodies. Les Pauls, yeah. They can be stones.
I think this suits the Strat shape, though. You expect to see Strats with big pick guards, so this design fits perfectly.
The algorithm threw this video my way, and I'm grateful.
More than your craftsmanship (which is INCREDIBLE!), your creative vision and your energy really speak to me.
That you also happen to actually play guitar real nice is kinda mind blowing.
Keep spreading your passion dude, you're doing great work!
Young man, I don’t know who set you on your path, but this is super impressive. Well done in concept, and execution! My only critique as a player would have been to mount your input on the side (tele style). Keep up your woodworking because at your age this will be a valuable commodity in the future. It is inspiring to see!!!
Tele style was exactly what I thought while he was doing it.
I know what you mean. In these days with half the kids have attention deficit disorders it is good to see a kid with such intense focus and concentration. He has what it takes to be a master of what ever profession he chooses.
@@nelsonx5326 I don't know if you know much about ADHD, but it can make it extremely easy to focus on things that interest and/or engage you. I can easily work on the guitars I build for hours and not notice. But then I try to do something I need to do, and it's like swimming through syrup. It's hard to explain, but it does seem to me like you don't know what ADHD really is at all.
@@nelsonx5326 it's all the vaccines the criminal big pharma is cramming in everyone. from birth all the way up.
Jesus Christ is Lord. Please take your salvation seriously and do what the Bible says. It is all True,.
Miles! Well done!! That thing is a work of art!
Thanks Michael!! 😉
Imagine being this young and already having aquired the skills of: Building one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen, being able to play the guitar very well afterwards and being able to produce a high quality video. You my friend are going to be big! Congrats on having such an awesome guitar now.
Hey Miles - I am a 65 year old woodworker who has been playing and teaching guitar for more than 40 years as well. I use kumiko in some designs, and I use Japanese tools quite a bit.. This wis a very , very impressive build. I wish you had played the guitar with a pick - that is the only way to really get a sense of the tone, but with what you did as far as cosmetics are concerned, I dont think you are too focused on the sound anyway. The art is the thing in this case, and it is fantastic. I own 30 or so guitars, and I don't have anything that is as interesting as your build.
There are two things I worry about with the use of epoxy - the weight, and the resonance. I imagine your guitar is pretty heavy. Regardless, its a great piece of art. I am very impressed, especially for your age and lack of woodworking experience. You knocked it out of the park young man! Way to go.
Joe
That’s got to be one of the coolest guitar builds I’ve ever seen! Those decals took it to the next level. 👏
Right on! Thank you so much ;)

@@MakeWithMiles - Now tell me: how much, to get you over with such a guitar, but another colour. Date, Dec. 2022 ? Email?
I agree, but maybe it would be better to apply decals before clear coating, they would last longer
You´re not a guitar maker. You´re not a luthier. You´re an artist. Congratulations. Fantastic.!!!!!!!!! A piece of art.
I was born July 4th 1963. I started trying to "build stuff" at age 4. I got a rectangular block of wood from My Grandad's basement then a Black-Green permanent marker from Grandma's junk drawer and drew a speedometer, tachometer and the rest of the gauges on the board. I had made a dashboard. I was sure proud of that thing and showed it to everybody. I originally wanted to build antique reproductions of old furniture as a career but it's nearly impossible to get a job doing this unless Your Father & Grandfather does this and You are their Apprentice. I settled on being a house painter/restoration contractor. I did much more than just paint. I did all the repairs and then paint the house. I've worked with my hands all my life but I believe this is the coolest thing I've ever seen. My hat's off to you young man you are true Craftsman. Your Workmanship is impeccable keep going no telling what You'll be able to achieve by the time You're My age - 57-1/2. You remind me so much of myself when I was your age. God Bless You and Your Family!!
Jimmy in NC....
I'm a Luthier, and I'm really impressed. A lot of thought and creativity went into this guitar. I really like this guitar.
Though the epoxy is an interesting and very trendy technique these days .......but I would have loved to hear it somehow constructed
without the epoxy .......I am a great semihollow fan.
you are not a luthier

You did an incredible job on this build!! Love how this turned out, way to go!
Thank you so much for the support! I had a ton of fun with the epoxy.
This is a really cool project that you helped with. Thank you!
I would have left out the epoxy. It would have been very light and resonent. You could have done cool stains or dyes.
Eric guitar ua-cam.com/video/i25dD5s1spwe/v-deo.htmlricguitarjhgyftr
@@stevenlewis4385 This was a superlative build. Despite building guitars myself, I'd buy this one. The control cavity cover is a sweet extra. The epoxy (or something similar) is pretty much a necessity, there wouldn't have been enough structure to support the mounting of the electronics and hardware, particularly the tremolo, without it.
This is absolutely stunning. You should be extremely proud of this build and know that it is very inspiring to the rest of us. Keep up the incredible work.
Gorgeous guitar!! Amazing attention to detail... those decals on the headstock just take it to another level.
Thanks for the video. This makes me want to make a body for my Japanese Squire neck!
Thank you so much Eric! I really appreciate it. I'm glad I added the decals.
Awesome! Beautiful Kumiko!
Thanks for bringing in those unique Japanese patterns! Katakana is good too! I've seen カタカナ incorporated in your previous projects.
I live in Asakusa, Tokyo, a town with a lot of old temples, landmarks and culture. Unfortunately, they are slowly dying out. The same is true for Japanese patterns. I am very happy to see that these things are being taken up by makers.
I'm looking forward to your next video! And your guitar playing was great!🎸
Thank you so much Jumpei! I'm glad you like the design ;) From the pictures I've seen of the town, you live in a very beautiful place. I'm so sad to hear that the culture and traditions are slowly dying, hopefully, people will re-discover them and bring them back to life. I'm glad I've discovered the art of Kumiko and I am eager to try making some new patterns. Thank you as always for your support ;)
Eric guitar ua-cam.com/video/i25dD5s1spwe/v-deo.htmlricguitarnbhguyijkbhk
Asakusa! Sugoi, desu ne! I used to work right down the boulevard in Roppongi, and I lived just down the hill in Azabu. My wife and I miss Japan and its beautiful people.
I've seen the same pattern used on some old buildings here in Sweden, really cool that Japan has the same thing.
Everything about this is perfect, love to see this level of design and craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing.
The work and talent, the patience for the wood-working part, and the quality of the shooting of the editing are just impressive! This video was very enjoyable and the result is stunning!
That is a fine looking guitar! The hardware around the pickups compliments it well, and the Kumiko pattern is gorgeous.
Amazing work! One simple change I would recommend would be to widen the neck screw holes in the body just slightly so that the screws only thread into the neck itself and not the body. When the screws thread into the body it causes the body to travel up the thread of the screw away from the neck and creates a small gap. If you widen the holes in the body it shouldn't really change much as far as your setup goes but it should make a pretty substantial improvement in the resonance of the guitar.
It's an electric guitar, resonance doesn't matter.
@@auzzythegreat clearly watched that guy playing over air.
@@auzzythegreat No it really really does
@@auzzythegreat Never heard of Sustain huh? Resonance does matter in an Electric Guitar. Otherwise people wouldn't have spent decades chasing Tone Wood, they all would use plywood. :-|
what a beautiful piece
i love how the wood didn't stain in a perfectly uniform way, it really makes the starbursts pop
and plays it wonderfully too! fantastic work

Wow, what a great build. That amp and guitar combo looks great!

I highly recommend making your own necks. It’s very rewarding. Also, you can skip the finger hole for the backplate by placing a magnet in the middle of the cover and making a tool you can use to stick to it from the outside and pull it out.
First of all great job! That is easily custom shop quality aesthetics right there. I think it needs to have a killer setup for that 'super high-end" vibe. Personally i think wooden pickup rings and wooden knobs would suited the project better. Overall stunning work, i am excited for your future projects!
Thank you so much Matthew! That means a lot. I am planning on upgrading the knobs to some that I custom make. I kind of ran out of time for fabricating those last few things because of the rockler challenge end date 😅
I would’ve gone with cream covers and knobs but yeah great build!!
Top job, but yeah I reckon Black instead of white plastic for the pickups and maybe even clear knobs.
Or possibly chrome knobs... it is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks great as it is....
This is gorgeous work and a very well done video. I can't wait to see more from you in the future.
Holy cow! What an awesome build! You absolutely deserved to win!! And that guitar is far and away the nicest I have ever seen. Not even rock legends have a bespoke custom guitar like that. Plus it sound awesome!! Can't wait to see future projects!

I love this build. I personally would have used a darker finish on the wood, and copper or bronze hardware. But it’s absolutely gorgeous.
What an absolutely stunning guitar! Loved seeing the whole process!
Personally I might've gone with black knobs and pickups as I find the white a bit jarring, but that's just a matter of personal taste. Again, stunning!
I was thinking the same, or at least a warm tone somehow, but yet not distract from the amazing woodwork.
Outstanding. I’m glad to hear you won, because the patience, humility, creativity, and craftsmanship on display here is truly inspiring.

Amazing result! I've built one guitar myself (and it was a Tele, so not nearly as much work as a Strat) and I know how much work it can be! Is there a reason to why you didn't place the output jack on the side or on the back of the body?
Yeah me too wonder why the jack on the top side
Telecaster jack output would look majestic with this imo
This came out so perfect… 😍
I must confess that when I saw your amp video I immediately thought about a guitar like this… thanks 👌🏼
Love this build!! Amazing camera work🤙
Beautiful job, Miles!! As someone who's built a lot of guitars, this was super impressive. Two questions: One, curious to know how much this weighed, given it was maple + epoxy. Did you weight? Also, how was the action on it? The neck looks like it was set a bit high (just IMO, not a criticism!), so I wonder how high you had to set the bridge saddles. I try to set the necks so that bottom of the fretboard is nearly flush with the body.
That all said, I'll probably borrow this idea at some point down the road. :D Well done, dude!!!
Yooo, this is gonna be good.
What can you not do??!! This is beautiful Miles! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Keep creating and making our jaws drop!
