Yes I have had that happen. But I work with stone and precious metals. I had blowout in a casting flask when doing lost wax casting, and sprayed hot molten silver all over the shop.😂 Love how this lantern project worked out for you, and a really cool idea for the switch mechanism.👍

That's a neat project. Love the edit. Few thoughts just for the sake of discussion. I know this is a one off project, still. - The lamp is not repair friendly as of now. Glue makes it really hard to service the lamp in the future (just like our phones). If there was a way to open the lamp that would make it repair friendly. - Make the lamp feel like a light trap. Let me explain. Right now, the lamp turns off just as you start closing and turns on as you pull it out all the way. It's very obvious when the light is going out. But if you reverse it and turn the lamp off at the end of closing and turn it on just as you start to pull the lamp out, it will give a sensation that the lamp is always on and the light was simply trapped inside by the exterior. Think that would be much cooler.

I was trying to figure out a way to make it come apart easily for the future, but it was like 10:00pm the night before I had to submit the video when I was gluing on the top piece, so I unfortunately just ran out of time to think of a clever solution. Also good idea with the light trap! That would have been way cooler haha

@@babybokchoiii It would be difficult to cut a thread into the wooden lid. I guess he could print the male and female threads and glue the female "nut" to the wood, but three little knobs on the inside of the lid wall and three matching L-shaped notches on the screen would be a lot easier to fabricate. Hope it makes sense.
It's always surprising how quickly hot glue cools when you don't want it to and doesn't cool when it's burning your fingers. Nice job on the lamp, and good save with the glue. Must have felt great when it finally came apart.
Omg it’s the worst.. when I want to make a quick foam built not meant to take more than a few hours, it takes me to whole day because the hot glue won’t dry. When I need to be precise and careful, the glue drips onto the fabric and ruins the whole thing 😭😭😭😭😭
Just a quick tip. Never cut both positive and negative wires at the same time with a metal plier because that will short them haha. I think it was turned off here so no issues, but its an easy mistake to make and fry your electronics.
Being as you 3D printed the shade, consider for the next version of the lamp to put threads on the top of the shade and cut them into the inside of the cap. Or, make the shade a little taller, put a wooden ring inside on the top -- held with two screws through the shade top, then make the cap's handle screws go through the handle, the cap, the shade, and into the wooden ring. In this way, you would be able to easily disassemble it in the future.
With all that short content in trend. It's nice seeing a long and pleasant build. So relaxing and enjoyable. Didn't feel like freakin twenty minutes! Well worth it. Nice job mate!

Some things aren’t as big as others, but the aesthetic is amazing. One of my favourite craft vids of all time, the lantern just looks so well and fits in perfectly. The execution wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t the worst I’ve seen. Amazing work❤
Awesome project, my only thought would be why not use 3d printing on the inside of the lantern to hold up the electronics, led and magnets? I feel like that would have made it much cleaner whilst giving you more space to put reflective tape!
that looks cool , just one suggestion... currently the lamp lights up when u pull it up completely , make it so that it feels as if the light was always on , turn the lights off when its all closed , but as soon as you give a small pull , make it turn on :)
You could've used actual magnetic switches, which are a thing and come in normally open and closed variants, or even some kind of mechanical switch . Glueing wires to magnets is not a good permanent solution. also you could've modelled a thread in the 3d printed part and wood sections ( if you can do threads on your lathe) and that way you don't have to glue that as well and can change the electronics if need be.
indeed the switch could be impouved in lot of ways, a magnet switch like he said, or even of the electronic main board, using original way to switch the lamp was fastidious. Also stick that led board on a wood is not smart, better go for aluminium to increase heat dissipation. At the end it turn out to be a cool lamp.
The quality of your angles and the the complexity of your projects makes it difficult for me to believe you only have 43k subs. I'm predicting 100k by Christmas. You deserve it.
Rubbing alcohol is good for unsticking hot glue. If you ever run into that problem again, try and pour some on it, and remove it, it won't hurt the electronics either. For example you could have turned it upside down, and poured a bunch in between the plastic and wood.

This look like something that can be sold on IKEA…especially a black version or green…maybe even white and gray. Or a metal version that possibly are endless with this project. It’s amazing ❤️
Awesome! You could use this design to make pathway lights or put them on a stand. Add a day/night cycle on them and they could open automatically at night.

The concept is extremely cool, and even more so the craft, but i suggest (if you ever plan on making a second version) to make it so the handle slides upwards and when put back into the place, disappears into the top part, and make it as a vertical sort bar and lever type situation. But overall a very cool concept/craft!!
I did take the 30 day course about 3 or 4 years ago and i gotta say absolutely amazing for beginners, i missed it right after finishing it. Really not overcomplicated and well done, well articulated english, and good way to keep you focused. Now i can do many amazing things with the software.
You should have used a reed switch, and use it to control another switch, a mosfet maybe, and the switch at the bottom is a good idea, since it will (should) cut power to the board since there is active electronics in there constantly using power, that way you prolong the life of the battery. And for the handle, have you considered using wood veneer? Just layer a bunch of sheets and glue them to each other while keeping them in shape.
Your creativity and skill are amazing for any age, but your youth makes it that much more impressive. You are truely talented brother, keep up the great work. Also do you know where I can get dowel seeds so I can grow them in my back yard too?
Hello, that's a really nice project and it came out looking awesome. I am working on electronics and i have a lot of experience with wood since my father was a carpenter, so i will leave here some friendly suggestions for your next projects: -Next time make it repairable (once you drop it it's done). For ex. you will need to swap the battery at some point cause most "no brand" 18650 batteries that come in products like these are really bad. -Please don't screw electronics on wood (especially LEDs and batteries on cheap plywood). Please source a holding case for the 18650 and cut out a small alum. plate to place the LED ring onto. Batteries like this one need vent holes and leds are tending to become really hot. You can also use some brass spacers to fix the pcb or add some insulation tape between the pcb and the wooden parts. -I would stick with the induction wire/switch that cycles through brightness, you could stick it on the side of the bottom part easily and would be a really nice feature. -Back to being repairable, the wood screws on the handle would def need a washer cause either of the two will happen, the handle will become loose/floppy or it will put pressure on the wood since the screw is glued on the handle and every time you open/close the handle you are screwing and unscrewing it 1/4 of a turn. Addressing the same "problem" you could leave the leave the handle screws exposed, use some black hex nuts (which look rly well with wood imho) and have them grab/lock the top part of the plastic at the same time, making repairable. If you insist on the clean look with hiding the screws, i suggest you add some metal inserts on the top body and have the handle screw to them and then cap them of with some wood. Nice work and nice video :)

Hello Miles! Found this gem of a video on my homepage (recently been interested in lighting design). The solution is so cool, and I love the design & material choice! I have a lighting project due soon, and I've designed it so that it's motion sensored & dimmable. No physical models, but I do need to complete an exploded CAD model, and watching your video has made me very motivated to complete mine! going to subscribe now haha
I think rubbing alcohol is supposed to release hot glue, but I’ve not tried it. Nice project and when the handle breaks, I look forward to seeing your steam bent handle project.

You inspire me! In my adventures with hot glue, I've found that a quick dab of rubbing alcohol breaks the bond in all but the most stubborn cases. Subbed!
If you had left the plastic diffuser and wood fitting be looser it would be so that when you lift it turns on and when you set it down it collapses and turns off, that’d be pretty cool too
very cool. I think what would be beneficial would be integrating a twist-to-lock so you can transport it with the handle and not have to turn it on. Just a thought.

Hey Miles, advice for the future with hot glue: Isopropyl alcohol tends to make it not stick to anything so you could try that as well
Was going to comment that. Works amazing the hot glue just slides right off with a little rubbing alcohol.

IPA is a good hot glue remover. Didn’t tried it on wood but works great for plastic.

To take off silicone glue the best thing you can use is a few drops of isipropyl alcohol!!!

You should make a little cone and cover with the mirror tape, and stand it inside the LED ring. That will throw the light outward rather than upward.
Love your work and tons of effort put behind this video, also the editing camera angles are fire!

Hello Miles! Found this gem of a video on my homepage (recently been interested in lighting design). The solution is so cool, and I love the design & material choice! I have a lighting project due soon, and I've designed it so that it's motion sensored & dimmable. No physical models, but I do need to complete an exploded CAD model, and watching your video has made me very motivated to complete mine! going to subscribe now haha
I think rubbing alcohol is supposed to release hot glue, but I’ve not tried it. Nice project and when the handle breaks, I look forward to seeing your steam bent handle project.

You inspire me! In my adventures with hot glue, I've found that a quick dab of rubbing alcohol breaks the bond in all but the most stubborn cases. Subbed!

If you had left the plastic diffuser and wood fitting be looser it would be so that when you lift it turns on and when you set it down it collapses and turns off, that’d be pretty cool too
very cool. I think what would be beneficial would be integrating a twist-to-lock so you can transport it with the handle and not have to turn it on. Just a thought.

Maybe a twist motion instead of glue would have been nice to open up the lamp. For example to replacing the battery in the future

Did you brand it? If not you should get a hot brand or use the laser cutter of the "3 in 1" printer you have and carve your logo into it or on the bottom
