The Chieftain was my father's favorite tank and I appreciate that it's papa Phly's favorite too. The Mk11 TOGS has been on my WT wishlist of vehicles for years, but Gaijin never delivers. Imagine the monster it could be though
Honestly, I love all the Chieftains. They are hull down monsters, and the gun just slaps everything. Even the APDS feels like it goes through anything, and when you get APFSDS in the MK10 you become a sniper without peer. If you hide that hull, armor is useful again.
Just a pain that the only difference between Mk3 and Mk5 in game is an extra 100hp. IRL the Mk5 eventually got a laser rangefinder and APFSDS (which everyone else at 8.7 has). The armour was designed to defeat APDS and in my experience isn't very good at all against APFSDS. Combined with the terrible mobility and that most maps are either close-quarters urban or vast plains where your allies can't screen you effectively they tend to be pretty painful to play for me. It's just strange to me that the Mk3 and Mk5 are treated so harshly by the BR system at 8.7 where they struggle but the Mk10 is at 9.0 where it's virtually immune to damage hull down and gets competitive ammunition.

It’s not op. The tank has its weaknesses. Phly just utilized the tanks strengths to perform well.

@@metalfight1234nah not neccessarily. There are some tanks with so few weaknesses that you don't need to play to its strengths because everything is a strength. e.g. Object 279

The mk.10 is also my favorite MBT in the game as well. With that turret armor at that BR, I am incredibly confident when hull down.

Both the engine and gun sound amazing on this tank, especially since there is no music in this video it's so great to hear this beast in action. I have a feeling someone at Gaijin is a big Chieftain fan.
British tech tree was the first one i started griding about 3 years ago. The fun begins at tier 3, almost everything before this is nothing but pain and headache. The lack of explosives is annoying sometimes so you really need to know each tank's weak spots, crew locations, everything. 2 out of 3 times you will have to shoot an enemy tank more than 1-2 times so you better watch your loader skills. The armour is "decent" but do your best to stay out of the enemy's sight, unless you're on a Churchill or a tortoise.
it's not even the lack of explosives, but that solidshot is so shit and gets bounced/absorbed by 10mm of structural steel.
Also the lack of any engine performance and the terrible reverse speed is painful

I love the chieftains, but they can be rough to play, especially if your team is slacking and it forces you to be more aggressive.
The T-72 is brilliant... but I like the Chieftain....

I'm also a big fan of the Chief10 on paper. I remember it being the first tank that was almost impenetrable when hull down. It was revolutionary.
It's almost like British MBTs are actually good when used in their proper hull down, hold the line, dug in at long range role as they were intended. Unfortunately, warthunder doesn't have enough big maps for the Chieftains and Challengers to shine.
A real defensive slow play style, like fishing almost. Certainly not for everyone who prefers the fast owced brawling but there's something satisfying about picking off enemies at range and holding a defensive line from a hull down position.

I'm using the VFM5 (9.3) for the early game ambush potential at 11.7, it pens everything at that br and I get more t-80 and leo kills in that than I do in the Challengers.

You should try the D4Y3 Ko, not sure if you've played it before on the channel but its a very smooth and maneuverable dive bomber/standard bomber

8:20 I did that once with the Jaguar, I ended up belly sliding off the end of the run way and was still able to take off and drop the bomb lol

I appreciate the British tech tree getting some love. My personal favorite is the BONQueror, but I dunno, I like the Chieftain line.
The centurion variants, conqueror and chieftain line are the best tanks in the British tree for their BR. That being said, I also like the Cromwells and churchills
As someone stuck in British Ground ratings (7.0 - 8.0) it's nice to know that there is something up there that's both tough and powerful.

The mk5 is my favorite chieftain at 8.7 its methodical gameplay is fantastic. Its quick enough and hulldown with the rangefinder it's fantastic. The centurian mk2 is currently my favorite in the tree at its BR but the chieftan mk5 is close second. They are probably some of the best looking tanks by far as well.

I love the merkava mk2/mk1 a lot it's not meta. it also feels amazing smashing t72 turms-t.
The reason I started playing war thunder is cause' It had the abrams which was my favorite tank and still is. It took me 3 years but now I can play my favorite tank and I never cared about the meta.

Pretty sure the chieftain only had RHA and no chobham armour although it did get the stillbrew composite turret armour upgrade later on, abrams and challenger 1 were the first chobham equipped mbt's.

Armor starts working until you meet a russian pineapple lobbing sloth and they decompress your crew's existence through the top hatch from 1.2km away when you're hiding behind the hill 😂
