Mobile one in all of my vehicles. Have pulled valve covers off of Silverado this year have had it since new in 2007. 80,000 miles and the inside of the cover was pristine. That convinced me.
was advised years ago by a old classic engine builder the detergent oils proved their value by the conition of the engines they seen inside after any disassemblys
I have been using Amsoil since 2004 and my bikes has always worked great, been on many long trips and the oil has kept my bike's engine clean and running cool.
I run either Mobil1, Amsoil or Red Line. They're all great oils and as long as you change your oil every 5,000 miles, you won't have problems with those oils. All three make the valve train run quieter for sure.
Yes sir i heard same as for a little more protection use pettrion plus added to oils to ready protect from were wver prymarys change oil and oil its self great it is
I recently learned that while Harley says Syn 3 in all 3 holes, you actually need a heavier Gear oil in the transmission. This is especially true if you suffer dreaded "5th Gear Whine". I agree that the Stealership is not necessarily your best source of maintenance information, since they would prefer you just buy a new bike every year.
While it is not necessary to run gear oil in the trans, most find it shifts better and quieter when you do. Here is a video of me trying out the new HD gear oil...I am liking it...it seems to be right up there with redline. ua-cam.com/video/1Ml7HP4jHkE/v-deo.html
Nice to hear a non biased opinion. My preference for every thing combusting is Amsoil full synthetic. V twin for v twins. Not sure if this is true, but i heard a reliable rumor that Harley Oil and Amsoil are made by the same company. Thanks for the video! Getting a quality filter is pretty important also in my opinion.
I can not for sure tell you.but who realy nos i heard harley oil is valine oil but i dount no.thsts true i do no best stuff made out there to relly protect and eng and save it from burning up hot or low oil.is petrion plus seen it quite vavs down run cooler and run a motor plum.out oil before all thho hard get sm.places u can fine this dam good add lube i would say all.u beed in ur bike is a mix of say 2 to 4 oz mixed woth amsoil etc in prymary or oil even a trains type its allsome protection
Guys, I have to say I do like the fact you don't just give opinions, but you say why and you quote the science and facts and experience. And sometimes if it doesn't matter then you say it doesn't matter. This winter I'll be installing tank lifts and maybe a couple other mods to cool the bike.
Thank you, appreciate the kind words, and that you are finding the videos useful/interesting. Thanks for your business, and always feel free to email or call with any questions. Support@DKCustomProducts.com 662-252-8828
I use syn 3 in my 2003 softail and 2012 sportster engines. Very happy with it. A few years ago I started using synthetic 3 in my primary in my softail and like you I noticed a big difference. The clutch operation was much smoother. I couldn't believe it. In the transmission I switched to red line years ago and I am sold on it. I tried syn 3 years ago in the transmission and I didn't like it. I started using the 80/140 in my sportster transmission/primary and I like it better than the standard oil that harley has.
I run Schaeffer in all 3 holes. The top end seems quieter to me with the Schaeffer. I run their transmission and primary oil because I can get it all at the same place. I've run Amsoil, in fact, I was a dealer for years, but I tried Schaeffer and switched to it after hearing the difference.
At 75 yrs old , I've been riding Harleys for 60 years. Panheads , Knuckles , Shovels and Evolutions - used Kendal racing oil (Brad Penn recently )in all of them with great success. When I graduated to a Twin Cam I used Mobil 1 20w50.
I was just going to comment about using kendall. Kendall literally can handle 200° more heat than the best mobile one has ever been able to produce and although mobile one is a better oil than it was just 10 years ago I wouldn't put that in anything I own. The Walmart super tech oil literally tests better than mobile one. The new Valvoline restore and protect may be a good ticket. But anything that will run in the primary, a timing chain in an engine is the most stresses you can put any kind of oil under. And 7590 gear oil actually flows better cold than does 50 weight motor oil
Just seeing this video so I’ll add this comment I seen a test between H-D Syn-3 oil versus Amsoil they did a spinning steel balls test in their oils and brought the temperature of the oil to highest extreme temperature. They showed at that temperature a engine would of exploded. So they shut down both testing machines inspected the steel balls for scuff marks. The steel balls in Harley oil showed strong visible scuff marks and the balls in Amsoil showed a faint scuff mark. Harley doesn’t make their oil, Amsoil does. That convinced me to go with Amsoil
@@penmakerar You misunderstood what he said. He said basically Harley-Davidson doesn't manufacturer their own oil they have a third party make it with their specifications. Amsoil on the other hand makes their own oil there's no third party.
Heard harly oils ready vavline whos nos i tell u thos for sure pettrion plus additive best ever made u can run a eng slap.ouy oil it be running treated with thst stuff hard get some places but its out there petrion plus treatment saves on were best ive seen it runs cooler to
I am hooked on Amsoil. And the best thing is that my local H-D dealership sells it and I can get my military discount on it, instead of ordering it online and not getting a discount.
I'm running Rotella T4 15W-40 in my Sportser, both holes. I'm in Wisconsin, so we don't get very hot here. On the back it says its JASO MA2 rated. Seems to help it run quieter, and its cheap so I'm happy.
I run Amsoil because of the independent testing, and they seem to focus on the application for each of their different oils. I think overall maintenance, quality of gas, and driving habits are ultimately what matters. If you take care of your bike and treat it right, I'm convinced that O'Reilly store brand would be just fine.
I'm doing the oil in my harley for the first time, and this was an awesome answer to all my questions today. Thanks from your newest fan ! I'm heading into your other videos to keep figuring out what my bikes needs to be maintainedright, because roads ready is what is important to me ! I've learned one thing as an old guy, and that is a maintained bike isn't broken down on the side of the road !!! Nope, it's a proven fact !
Glad you found the video helpful! You are correct a well maintained bike running at optimal temps isn't going to break down hardly ever if ever! Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
7:00 Same here! I use SYN3 because I can take a quart of oil with me wherever I go, and if I need it in the transmission, the primary or the engine, I have it.
Not my first bike, but my first Harley. I just did the 1000 mile service myself on a 2021 Road Glide. I used the HD heavy gear oil in the transmission, Formula + in the primary and Mobil 1 20w-50 in the crank case. I can tell you the trans is like butter. The shifts are smooth and no noise. I read a lot of the internet Oil Guru's opinions before making those decisions.
I think Kevin is right, the key is decent oil from one of several brands changed on time. Because of DK's comments on oil temps even in twin cooled like mine (my M8 can hit 254 deg F on super hot days), I'm with Amsoil engine, Amsoil Trans, Amsoil Primary. The latter two are specific formulations and work fine. Amsoil has been shown to stand up to high temps (at least for a while). I don't trust Harley's smaller or different oil pump on the twin cooled vs regular M8 to install an oil cooler, so I'm just going to change to the reusable higher flow filter for now (just post warranty on my bike). At 4000 oil miles plus, the top end start up clatter seems more pronounced even with Amsoil. I always change at or before 5 k miles. I use HD Lucas Stabilizer at 20% engine only and that quiets the engine clatter at startup dramatically due, most likely, to film coating. Red Line's high moly formulation does the same. I have the oil test kit and will test at next change.
My 2000 wide glide now has 88,000 miles. I started using amsoil at the 5000 oil change. The valve train is as quite as other twins with half the mileage. So the Amsoil has to be doing a good job of protecting the engine.
My 2021 Road Glide Special came from the factory with an oil cooler yet without a fan on the oil cooler. I added the fan, then overpaid my dealership to get online with the ecu and turn on the fan. I don’t know how necessary that was but I feel good about having it.
I run Mobil 1 in engine , HD Formula + in primary and Redline w/shock guard in tranny . I have used Valvoline Dino motorcycle 20/50 in law enforcement primary . I’d change it about every 3 or 4 k miles due to competition riding and practice. Never any issues with stator or clutch , some bikes have 60 k miles . They smoke a clutch every now and then reguardless what primary oil I used . Key was getting burned oil out .
2005 Harley Ultra Classic 75800 miles using Mobil One full synthetic 30w oil, and a NAPA oil filter, and using Dextron ATF fluid in the primary case, Mobil 1 gear oil in the transmission, Original Twin Cam chain tensioners changed at 75800 miles.
I only have 2900 miles on my 2020 Road King but changed out the transmission fluid and replaced it with Redline Shockproof. A huge difference in shifting ease and now get into neutral on the first try every time. When it comes to the primary I'll be trying a quality MA2 approved oil as used in wet clutch bikes of all brands.
I run Harley primary y transmission fluid in my 06 heritage and never had a problem with neutral or any gear Engine oil is my question,, why would I run mobile 1 or amsoil synthetic when you guys said you had more top end noise? Also those are all expensive oils, red l I ne amsoil mobile 1
Great info fellas, running std. 20-50 in the 103 now. Years ago, 80's, I used Texaco Premium AD 50 wt. This was actually aircraft oil. Done a fine job. That FLH Shovelhead ran like a P-51 Mustang! Take care guys.
Hey guys, just subscribed today because I'm going to switch over to external breather. I've run Syn 3 when my 2012 FLHTK was under warranty. I switched to Mobile1 20-50 in all 3 holes, had top end clatter. Switched to Amsoil with no problem. Tried RedLine, loved the ShockProof in the trans. When I used RL Primary Fluid I experienced an awful noise like the compensator was trash. I drained and install Amsoil 20-50 and the noise went away, get this while draining the RL my garage smelled like I took a poop. Maybe bad oil. I'm back with Amsoil, but staying with Shockproof in the trans. I'm going Spectro in all holes next. Just my $.02...
Thanks, glad you enjoy them. Yeah, I've had some strange smells with different fluids in the primary also. Post up what you think of Spectro after running it. Would like to know.
My nearest Harley dealer's 3 hours away so there oils out. But I can get Amsoil locally so I use there specific oil for each hole. I bought some Redline shock proof for the Trans but still leary on trying it. As a side note I run Mobil in everything else on the farm but when I contacted my supplier was informed Mobil 1 for motorcycles was no longer available in Canada.
Just changed my father's bike out for Lucas 75w-140 made for Harley transmissions. It is significantly quieter, significantly smoother shifting, and dad no longer reports having issues finding neutral (we confirmed it was not an internal issue with the transmission).
I use Amsoil after using it in my Moto Guzzi 1200 Griso and it silenced what is a very noisy bikes top end. I like its sheer strength and the fact it maintains viscosity no matter them temps.
used different ones over the years from Kendall in my pan heads to redline in my twin cams and found Bel Ray has been the top one so far, after watch a demo at a bike and boat show years ago & sent a sample to black stone with good results. But I always keeping an open mind as the industry changes.
2018 M8 107 Sport Glide, some touring on it. Mobil 1 V Twin 20w-50 in engine. HD Heavy Syn 80w-140 in primary and gear box. The Heavy Syn really helps with ability to find Neutral on my bike, hot or cold, compared to HD performance Plus conventional gear oil. 1st-3rd have always been real clunker shifts on my bike, for some reason, up or down. 4th-6th much less noise.
Yes, I tried the Heavy Syn in the transmission also...I am impressed with it. Redline shockproof might still be my fav, but the Heavy Syn is right there with it.
Nice video! My 1999 FLHR Screaming Eagle 95 I run... crankcase: Mobil1 Synthetic 15W-50... Primary: RevTech... Tranny: Lucas, Mobil1 or Castrol gear oil 75w-90... I have used Redline, and I like it, but expensive. I have fine shifting with the Lucas, Mobil1 and Castrol.
I had ran Bel-Ray in the primary, Mobil 1 in engine, and Red Line in the trans. If you have a leak, the different colors of oil helps tell you what is leaking. My newer Harley is sealed up much better so leaks are less of a concern. And yes the Mobil 1 is motorcycle oil NOT car engine oil.
I have a friend that sells Amsoil I run it in my Harley, Ford F-250 Powerstroke and my Hustler zero turn I’ve had very good luck with it. Thanks for the videos.
I Really Doubt an Oil that's Used in Everything is as Good as an Oil Specifically Designed for a Particular Task..Syn 3 in my 114 M8 Engine and HD heavy gear oil 80/140 which has a Much Superior Viscosity and Lifespan than 20/50 for my Primary and Tranny.. Zero Oil burn or Shavings at my 2nd oil change.. Everything bout the 80/140 is Awesome ,Yes other oils are good Also.
Now running TriboDyn. I had been using Amsoil before my stage 2 and liked it very much. However, I noticed a temp increase after the swap, so I decided to give full-syn TriboDyn 20-50 V-twin m/c oil a try. Runs quieter and is about 6 degrees cooler than my Amsoil temps. An added bonus is increased fuel mileage at an average of 48+ mpg without hammering. BTW, keep your oil level about halfway on the dipstick as the service manul states for the best fuel mileage. TriboDyn has a unique blue color too. A University study showed that it outperformed all other oils, and I am now a believer. The price is about the same at $19.95 a quart. Hope this helps someone.
Weekend warrior here. Use the Mobile 1 oils in the engine and primary with one caveat that I add Lucas additive to the engine. Since it sits all week and sometimes two, the lucas helps keep the top lubricated during start ups. For the transmission, use a Mobile gear oil as that seems to give me less clunkier shifts.
I run S&S 20W 50 synthetic in my S&S engine because that is what S&S recommended. They designed the engine and they warranty the engine so they have skin in the game. I use Spectro 6-speed transmission oil im my Baker Grudgebox and in my primary where I have a Baker compensator and Baker chain tensioner. That was what Baker recommended. I have a Rekluse clutch system that complied with Bakers oil recommendations.
I have used Mobil 1 in a Victory exclusively for 97k miles. It has never burned any oil between changes. I now use it in my Harley SG. Trans seemed better with Harley's new synthetic gear oil.
AMSOIL 💯% as a dealer for 5+ years and a believer for over 8 years I use Amsoil in my trucks and bikes and use alot of the many products Amsoil has plus its easy to have it delivered to my door step and not make a trip to the store/dealership and I do my own service's
I have tried it out myself, both in the trans and in the primary. In the Trans, it is right up there with Redline shockproof...in my experience. In the primary, it may be the best things I have run in it.
I'm about to do my 1k service this week on my '21 Road King Special. I'm going to use Syn3 in the engine and the HD synthetic heavy gear oil in my trans and primary. I will keep using these until my 2 year warranty is up. I've heard about Harley denying warranty claims based on other oils "not meeting their specifications". After my warranty expires, I'm switching to Redline and sticking with it.
Yeah, their specifications are pretty broad. Redline "meets their specifications". But you are not going to damage anything by running Syn 3. Regarding the silly warranty that HD has, you may find this video interesting/useful- ua-cam.com/video/p8U4XsHyBugh/v-deo.htmlttps://ua-cam.com/video/p8U4XsHyBug/v-deo.html
I’ve run redline since I was off warranty change all my fluids every 3000 miles. Motor, trans and primary no issues just put cams in my 2011 SG interior of Camchest was super clean I was happy to see that worth every penny.
Mobil 1 VTwin 20-50 synthetic!Use in my Harley motor and primary chain! No problems! Also use it in my Kawasaki 1500,actually lowers motor temperature! 😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🏴☠️🏴☠️
Thanks for turning me on to the thunder torque inserts! I have bought 2 sets from you and I love’em! If not for DK customs I probably wouldn’t have known about them for a lot longer time if ever! Thanks for a great product! I tell everybody I can about them! Thanks again,I will be a customer for life! Harley Vulcan Cobra 4.6! 😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🏴☠️🏴☠️
@@harleyvulcancobra4.619 Thank you for the comment. 👍 Very happy to hear you're digging the TTI's. We appreciate your business, and your recommending them.
If used Harley earl and Mobil 1 earl… I just received my earl change box from maxima today but there are people out there that swear by syn3 or redline… it don’t matter to me but I will ALWAYS use a heavier weight gear lube in my transmission and primary housing!!
I like J&P oil change in a box. It comes with everything, but you need to buy 1 extra primary every 3 changes. I prefer synthetic because it seems to be a little more quiet. I do however just change all of it at once because I love my bike.
I have a 2019 HD Ultra Limited M8 and will now change all three oils at 12,000 km with SYN3 20W50. There are no kilometers yet, but I would like to change before winter. The engine was changed at 7,000 km.
That sounds like a solid plan! Regular oil changes are key to keeping your Ultra Limited running smoothly, especially with the colder months approaching. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I’ve used syn 3, Mobil 1, Amsoil, and HD 360 in my Harleys. Valvoline in import bikes. Idk they all seem about the same. Been using amsoil pretty exclusively for a couple years now but honestly doesn’t matter to me that much.
I have used syn 3 in the past and switched to Royal Purple about 15 years ago and never had a single issue. I read all the reviews on Amsoil so I thought I would try it. Well 3000 miles later I lost two lifters and two pistons. Coincidence maybe but the only engine work I had done from the year before was a camshaft and lifter replacement. I always replace the cam bearing and lifters if I change the cam. I can tell you that I will be going back to Royal Purple. I run spectro 6 speed oil in my transmission and Royal Purple in my primary case.
I have had the same EVO from new since 92 with 62k on it and have used/tried a lot of oils but will only tell you of the three that made an impression on me. AMSoil 20w50. seemed to run cooler with more valve train noise, then 4 years ago something change in the oil that a group of us have encountered. After highway speeds in 100 heat, the oil pressure drops to zero at isle. This only happened with AMS oil. VR1,engine was quitter ,oil temp and performance the same as AMS oil but no loss of oil pressure. Schaefers 20w50 7000 race oil. Oil pressure good and right about 2700 rpm the engine is ungodly quite. Oil temps run between 200 and 220 depending on conditions on all the oils. . Lately I switched to a Hubb reuseable mesh oil filter and have gained 5 psi- 25 psi at cruising speeds that's higher then it came from the factory.
I had similar experience with Amsoil...seem to lubricate fine, but very noisy valve train...so I did not continue using. Never experienced the drop in oil pressure. ACK! 😱 I like the VR1 ok also. My experience with Schaefers was very good also...almost enough to get me to switch from Redline....it may even be better than Redline, but I guess I may be in a bit of a rut there. lol Yes, reusable oil filters not only filter better, but they put less parasitic drag on the engine. You may find this video we did on them (including dyno charts) useful/interesting. ua-cam.com/video/__WbuX1IT1c/v-deo.html Thanks for commenting. 👍😎👍 KP
Been using Royal Purple in transmission and either Amsoil or Mobil 1 in engine and primary. I will typically change trans once for every 2 primary / engine oil changes.
Thinking the best thing you can do besides reasonable oil change intervals is to use a 100% synthetic oil at the recommended viscosity and has a JASO MA2 rating. Agree with the video to make use of Blackstone Labs.
My dad and his dad were mechanics and have worked on every kind of motor, trany, and differentials that were on the road. I grew up hearing that a motor gets used to the oil that it's been getting. I'm 70+ yrs old and followed that advice with every vehicle I've owned, including my Harley. My current ride is a 2019 FLHR and I run HD full synthetic oil and will stay with that for as long as I ride it. I change it at the recommended interval and the cost is irrelevant. I got well over 100K on my last FLHR and was never disappointed with its performance.
Thanks for your comment! 👍 Yes, I have heard the same over the years, and I *believe* there is a certain truth to it. However, I am not sure that it is as applicable to more recently manufactured engines. But it never hurts to be safe.
@@DKCustomProducts You're absolutely right which is my reasoning with this new FLHR. However, I've only put 13K miles on it so it's just getting broken in. Time and miles is the best arbiter in most performance debates.
What happens in the first minute from cold seems to make a difference with how the lifters hold up. Idle too slow and low oil pressure under load doesn't keep the lifters pumped up? Having threads in the sump would have been nice when I went to do my first oil change on a 25 year old twin cam, will be better prepared for the transmission and primary plugs if I find plumbers tape on the plug.
Regular oil changes are definitely important. Oil doesn't wear out. It just gets dirty/ contaminated. I learned working as an Engineer in the Navy, then continuing on in the Merchant Marine this important fact. Oil is cheaper than bearings...
I've tried different brands and settled on Mobil 1 20/50 in engine, redline tranny in gearbox and Amsoil primary in primary. My 18 Fat bob likes that combo.
Yep, ATF in Primary.. I find it helps with clutch hookup under high load and revs... Aussie brand engine oil "Penrite racing" (Ten tenths) range FULL Synthetic... (Not like Syn3 which is only 60% synthetic) Trans I have used Redline shockproof.. the best by far for smoothness, if not available I'll use Penrites gear oil which is a super smooth running oil also. Great vid, cheers
I've always use HD Syn3 in the motor/ primary and Red Line w/ shock proof in the trans in my 2010 Ultra Limited since new except 1 time I won a amsoil oil change package and had the top end rattle like you described and the Red Line really helped on shifting. I now have 97K+ miles. On the wife's 2018 Tri Glide I've been using Syn3 in the motor and the NEW HD heavy gear oil in the Trans/Primary after the HD update for the fluid transfer with the little hose.... been shifting great for her.
That is great. Thank you for the comment. Good to hear from another Rider of Miles out there. I've heard really good things about that new HD Heavy gear oil. Gonna be trying it soon.
I read many forms a while back and compiled a large set of data with recommendations. I came with similar results. Mobile 1 vtwin in the crank case, syn 3 in the primary, and redline antishock I'm the trans.
Ya I had trouble hearing u too .young fellas clear as day . This was one of yr better vids, all are good. Though. Amsoil is best for me . Been using it for 15 years or so. Keep up the good work u guys.
I know this is a year old as I am viewing it. I ride a 2012 RK 103” TC. I run Lucas in the crankcase. And redline in the transmission. I am in the N.E. Area. I ditched the Syn 3 a long time ago due to my opinion that it poured like water and wondered how it could maintain lubrication. I do have the top end clatter the dealer did try redline with a a set of lifters. But I never found the noise to quiet. Those are just my thoughts. But what it comes down to is like you said as long as it’s lubricated with proper application.
You are running some good oil. Most of the time the source of the top end clatter is the rocker arm shaft ticking against the rocker box bolts. There is an inexpensive solution that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/rocker-lockers-for-harley-davidson-twin-cam-motors-dk-rl-tc.htm
2005 RK 80k miles I bought in 2015 with 7k miles on it I have used Mobil 1 in all three holes ever since and never had any issues. That’s in FL heat commute to work of 27 miles each way.
I have 55K miles on a 2004 Fatboy that has had nothing but organic Rotella 20w50 in it since it's second oil change. It still runs and rides great. I used it because I always had it around for my 6.0 ford f250sd.
it all comes down to changing it on reg intervals i use redline 20w-50 v twin im at 150 hp and redline works great with heat with redline the hotter the motor gets the more oil pressure it holds but i still change it at 2500 miles
City riding or much stop and go needs more frequent oil changes. Most important is doing oil changes as needed. Mobil 1 for my bikes. Personal preference. Thks for video gentlemen..
The Evo is has pretty much the same requirements as the Twin Cam and the M8, as addressed in this video. The one thing is that the Evo is a bit more particular in having the correct viscosity oil for the ambient temperature it is being ridden in. Thanks for commenting! MB
I have owned several Harley’s and still have my 1986 FXST and used nothing but Harley oil, I split the cases one time on the softail just too have the cases powder coated the lower end crank bearings were still like new just put it back together and we’ll over 30 years later still going strong.
@@DKCustomProducts I listened twice and still didn't catch the EVO reference. But thanks for the reply back. I keep hearing that using synth in an EVO is a bad idea. Where I'm at it's super hot. I'm hoping that synth helps with the heat. (Leaks). Thanks again.
They’re all good as long as it’s changed at the right intervals. I use Syn 3 due to convenience and the heavy HD in the primary and transmission. I’m considering Red Line 20W 60 also going to a K&P reusable oil filter setup
Yes, as long as your oil is not over filled, is not getting too hot, you are running the correct weight for the lowest ambient temperature you ride in, and it is lubricating your internals you can't really go wrong. Glad you have found an oil you can rely on. Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
You guys did a great, non opinionated video. Good advice. My feelings- just use a good quality branded oil and make your own judgement. All the brands you listed are fine. A good 20w50 engine oil or 75w140 in the Transmission and primary is fine. (Gear oil is measured differently so the numbers aren't apples to apples. 75w140 is about the viscosity of 20w50 engine oil.) I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in primaries and transmissions of my Harleys and Buells for 15 years. no issues. ATF is fine in Primary. I've even used Shell Rotella or Mobil 1 diesel oil in engine before. I use it in my Japanese single cylinders. Everything you said is good advice.
I started with Amsoil 3 hole, then started doing my own work on my Fat Boy, stayed with Amsoil with moderate blow-by using DK Catch Cans. Then got my Road Glide in 2023, the Blow-by was excessive…should have taken it back but discovered the issue after two months of riding. Chris at Cycle Solutions put RedLine 20W-60 in my crank case and I haven’t looked back because it reduced my Blow-By. Changed to RedLine ⚙️ for my trans and discovered the bike has the migration issue where transmission oil is sucked into the primary…I never noticed it before using same oil. Just installed an Evolution Industries Stage 1 clutch pack, which calls for ATF Type F. Still have Pepto Bismol coming through the clutch adjuster. Waiting on heads from JET Johnson Engine Technology, so can’t give a review of the new oiling set up. SilverBAK has DK Custom Catch Cans on T-Man Air Cleaner, and NICECNC Trans Top Cover. My ability to diagnose issues with my bikes has grown with time in the saddle, wrenching, and using specialized oils. Thanks for the video, good advice never gets old. Ultra Limited 2019. Motor: Amsoil 20W50, Tranny: Amsoil Transmissoin oil, Primary: Spectro heavy duty oil. Change oil and filter every 3100 miles, primary and tranny once a year. I use oilfilter HIFLO 171B. This combo works gr8 for me. Oil is like debating the holy bible there will be a lots of opinions . . . . As long as you are on owners manual specs u'll be alright i guess.
I run Amsoil, however, I’ve heard many good things about redline, especially for transmission. Might try it, might not. Dealer gets $20 a qt for it. I get Amsoil considerably cheaper and have no issues. maybe one day I’ll try it for the hell of it.
I switched to redline after using amsoil. Tried motul last service and so far it holds up. Synthetic is best. Amazon delivers and $5 cheaper than dealers.
redline oil is over rated but good it has additives in it that do not mix with common oils.if you decide to change over change your oil after 1000 mile again to flush your pervious brand of oil
Maxima V-Twin Synthetic Oil Change Kit with Black Filter - 90-119016PB I’ve had really great results with this product. Comes as a complete three hole change with o- rings and a Hi-flow filter. Reasonable pricing
That’s great to hear! Some people hold on to their vehicles for the long term, while others trade them in at every opportunity. Thank you for commenting! 👍😎👍 MB
I used Amsoil in engine and primary of my 2011 Ultra this spring because of convenience of obtaining it. I had to get rid of the crank case oil with less than 500 miles because of the top end noise. It sounded like it was going to fall apart. Currently running some NAPA 20-50 dino-oil but will be dropping that soon and going back to Redline. Should have stuck with what I knew. Had some work done recently in the primary and fluid was change to Bel-Ray. Not sure I like it as it seems like I have a slipping clutch now. I could be imagining things too on that.
Yeah, one reason there are so many opinions on HD lubricants is because it seems every bike responds differently with different needs to address... such as engine noise, clunking, clutch friction, etc. I hope you find an oil that works well for you. Thanks for commenting! 👍 MB
Amsoil now. At oil changes it doesn't turn that dark brown I'm accustomed to seeing. There is also a reduction in engine noise. works for me on both my vrod and softail slim. The only other oil I would use other than Amsoil is redline oil. I belive all are good if you change your oil when supposed to
On another channel a Harley engine builder endorses Amsoil. If he tears them down & builds them up, he should know what works well. So it’s Amsoil for me. K&N Filters.
I use bel-ray semi synthetic I use bel-ray primary in about the only thing I do different I do use the bell rang in the transmission but I use the 85w 140
Agree with you 100%. For close to a decade I have been using the Performance Oil Filter shown at the link below. It filters better, and there is less drag on the oil pump, resulting in more power getting to the rear tire. Here is a video about it- ua-cam.com/video/tWtO8J1xE5E/v-deo.html Link to Oil filter- www.dkcustomproducts.com/outlaw-high-performance-cleanable-oil-filter-in-anodized-black-dk-ocof-ab.htm
I have been putting Ams 20w-50 in the engine (S&S 124") and Dexron 3 ATF in the primary because I have a Barnett Scorpion clutch and that's what they want. I am running BelRay Big Twin 85w-140 in my transmission and it's been a good improvement over Ams severe gear. I just today switched to Redline 20w-50 synthetic to see about the rocker arm clatter. 45k miles so far. Now I see that BelRay has V-twin 10w-50 synthetic oil out. May try that in the future. I run two 10 row oil coolers and my oil temp hasn't gotten any high than 212°F on 100° days. I don't ride in town much. I get out on the highway.
Good deal, sound like you do the same we do, test and see what is better. Thank you for the very informative comment. 👍😎👍 KP btw, I have had a few bikes that I've run two oil coolers on also...sometimes that is what it takes. Here's a vid you may find interesting- ua-cam.com/video/M9ta84TmROc/v-deo.html
@@DKCustomProducts the 2 oil coolers was a Bob Wood idea for my build but I've had a very trusted technician tell me that I need to let that motor get hot. Seems like a personal preference. I do watch my temps and they stay between 180-210
Those are the perfect temps! You got it dialed in. Here's a vid we just made on the subject- ua-cam.com/video/ILrYlhwz9QE/v-deo.html You definitely want parts to get hotter than others. KP
@@DKCustomProducts yeah the S&S 124" has Evo style base gaskets so I understand what he's saying about getting it hot to seal the bases better but I think I got it at a happy medium. I'm happy with those temps. I feel it not so hard on the oil so the oil can do its job

Mobile one in all of my vehicles. Have pulled valve covers off of Silverado this year have had it since new in 2007. 80,000 miles and the inside of the cover was pristine. That convinced me.
Very nice!
was advised years ago by a old classic engine builder the detergent oils proved their value by the conition of the engines they
seen inside after any disassemblys
I have been using Amsoil since 2004 and my bikes has always worked great, been on many long trips and the oil has kept my bike's engine clean and running cool.
Thanks for the comment. Great to hear you are happy with your ride! 👍
I run either Mobil1, Amsoil or Red Line. They're all great oils and as long as you change your oil every 5,000 miles, you won't have problems with those oils. All three make the valve train run quieter for sure.
Good to hear, thanks for commenting!
Agreed
Red Line is my preference
Amsoil & Mobil 1 second
Both are great lubricating oils! Glad you like the video.

Thanks for the comment. Great to hear you are happy with your ride! 👍
Thank you for the comment. 👍 Yeah, I like the Schaeffer oil, I only ran it in the engine...never tried it in the primary or trans.
Its good oil
Its excellent but 2 expensive imo
At 75 yrs old , I've been riding Harleys for 60 years. Panheads , Knuckles , Shovels and Evolutions - used Kendal racing oil (Brad Penn recently )in all of them
with great success.
When I graduated to a Twin Cam I used Mobil 1 20w50.
That is great. Glad that you have found an oil that works well for you! Thank you for commenting! 👍😎👍 MB
Mobile 1 is great stuff, but I can get Bel Ray alot cheaper
Use little pettrion plus in primary its lube the changes tenners best @@44hawk28
Thanks for your comment.
Amsoil does not make any other brand oil. They only make Amsoil branded oil.
@@penmakerar You misunderstood what he said. He said basically Harley-Davidson doesn't manufacturer their own oil they have a third party make it with their specifications. Amsoil on the other hand makes their own oil there's no third party.
Amsoil all the way!!
Good deal!
I'm running Rotella T4 15W-40 in my Sportser, both holes. I'm in Wisconsin, so we don't get very hot here. On the back it says its JASO MA2 rated. Seems to help it run quieter, and its cheap so I'm happy.
👍😎👍
I run Amsoil because of the independent testing, and they seem to focus on the application for each of their different oils. I think overall maintenance, quality of gas, and driving habits are ultimately what matters. If you take care of your bike and treat it right, I'm convinced that O'Reilly store brand would be just fine.
Good add, Thanks for sharing! 👍
Havoline 10w-40, non-synthetic works as well as any of those overpriced brands
@@johnswanson3741 no it doesn't
I'm doing the oil in my harley for the first time, and this was an awesome answer to all my questions today. Thanks from your newest fan ! I'm heading into your other videos to keep figuring out what my bikes needs to be maintainedright, because roads ready is what is important to me ! I've learned one thing as an old guy, and that is a maintained bike isn't broken down on the side of the road !!! Nope, it's a proven fact !
Glad you found the video helpful! You are correct a well maintained bike running at optimal temps isn't going to break down hardly ever if ever!

7:00 Same here! I use SYN3 because I can take a quart of oil with me wherever I go, and if I need it in the transmission, the primary or the engine, I have it.
Awesome! I am glad you have found an oil that works for you. Thank you for commenting! MB
Been hearing a lot of good about the new HD Gear OIl, going to give it a go. Thanks!
Good add, Thanks for sharing! 👍
@@DKCustomProducts the ultracool oil cooler uses a reuseable cleanable filter that clicks in to their aluminum finned filter
Tks for the content. Off brand 20/50 “full synthetic” in all 3 holes. Quiet top end. Smooth shifting. Good running 05 RK. Ride safe everyone
Thanks for the contribution. Good to hear you have your bike running smoothly! 👍
My 2000 wide glide now has 88,000 miles. I started using amsoil at the 5000 oil change. The valve train is as quite as other twins with half the mileage. So the Amsoil has to be doing a good job of protecting the engine.
Thanks for sharing
This year I used Redline engine, primary and transmission fluid. Did so last year as well. So far so good.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
My 2021 Road Glide Special came from the factory with an oil cooler yet without a fan on the oil cooler. I added the fan, then overpaid my dealership to get online with the ecu and turn on the fan. I don’t know how necessary that was but I feel good about having it.
Important thing is to keep that oil from going over 230 F. 👍
Great combo and advice. Thank you! 👍
Sounds like you have a system that works for you. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Thanks for the comment. Enjoy Your Ride!
I run Harley primary y transmission fluid in my 06 heritage and never had a problem with neutral or any gear
Engine oil is my question,, why would I run mobile 1 or amsoil synthetic when you guys said you had more top end noise? Also those are all expensive oils, red l I ne amsoil mobile 1
2008 SG. Amsoil engine and primary. Redline in transmission. HD filter. May switch to fram after watching HD vs Fram
Cool... Amsoil and Redline are always a great choice, Thanks for watching!
2016 FLTRXS, Amsoil in the 1 & 2 hole, Redline in the 3 hole. Always have, always will. Helps me sleep at night.

Thanks for your comment! 👍 Interesting on the Mobil 1 in Canada.
Just changed my father's bike out for Lucas 75w-140 made for Harley transmissions. It is significantly quieter, significantly smoother shifting, and dad no longer reports having issues finding neutral (we confirmed it was not an internal issue with the transmission).
That is Great! Glad you found an oil that is working great for your dads bike! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I use Amsoil after using it in my Moto Guzzi 1200 Griso and it silenced what is a very noisy bikes top end. I like its sheer strength and the fact it maintains viscosity no matter them temps.

I agree, I don't use syn3 because there is no information on the label to support the cost difference between other oils
I hear ya.
Thank you for your feedback.
Sounds like a sweet ride!
Awesome! Sounds like you have a system and oil that is working for your! Thank you for sharing and for commenting! MB
Lucas 20/50 syn in engine and ATF Type F in primary. Runs great. Xlh1200 with Barnett Kevlar extra plate clutch

Zero Oil burn or Shavings at my 2nd oil change.. Everything bout the 80/140 is Awesome ,Yes other oils are good Also.
I didn’t mean that l use the same oil in them all just the brand I used the specific oil for all the applications!

Never heard of it. Thanks for the info. Gonna give it a go. 👍
Thank you for the comment. 👍
Nice, it sounds like you have gotten a good combination figured out for your ride! Thank you for commenting! 👍
I use amsoil, amsoil trans and amsoil primary. I've used the harley gear oil and I found that amsoil makes the trans less "kluncky."

Sounds like you got it wired. More and more it is very convenient to get things delivered to your doorstep.
I use the new HD gear oil in my TC & have noticed the shifting to be less clunky and so much smoother. Syn 3 for the rest.

Man, sorry about your engine. Thanks for sharing your experience. Royal Purple is good oil!
ACK! 😱
I like the VR1 ok also.
My experience with Schaefers was very good also...almost enough to get me to switch from Redline....it may even be better than Redline, but I guess I may be in a bit of a rut there. lol
Yes, reusable oil filters not only filter better, but they put less parasitic drag on the engine. You may find this video we did on them (including dyno charts) useful/interesting.

@Charles Dixon uh...ok
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for commenting! MB
Regular oil changes are definitely important. Oil doesn't wear out. It just gets dirty/ contaminated. I learned working as an Engineer in the Navy, then continuing on in the Merchant Marine this important fact. Oil is cheaper than bearings...
Good add!!! Thanks for commenting! 👍
@DKCustomProducts You're welcome. Thank you for the good content.
Glad you are liking the videos!!!
I've tried different brands and settled on Mobil 1 20/50 in engine, redline tranny in gearbox and Amsoil primary in primary. My 18 Fat bob likes that combo.
Glad you have found an oil that works for you! Thanks for commenting! MB
2020 Road Glide Special 114 with Amsoil in engine and transmission with no noticeable difference from SYN3. SYN3 still in primary
Thanks for your comment! 👍
Spectro oil
Yep,
ATF in Primary.. I find it helps with clutch hookup under high load and revs...
Aussie brand engine oil "Penrite racing" (Ten tenths) range FULL Synthetic... (Not like Syn3 which is only 60% synthetic)
Trans I have used Redline shockproof.. the best by far for smoothness, if not available I'll use Penrites gear oil which is a super smooth running oil also.
Great vid, cheers
Thank you for your comment.
Great info you shared, we appreciate it! 👍
@@barcharmc6216 Thanks for sharing. Glad you're liking that combo.
Shell rotella t6 synthetic. All 3 holes. Also run it in my victory vision, semis, pickup trucks, tractors, generators, pretty much everything.
Nice! Thanks for commenting!
Ya I had trouble hearing u too .young fellas clear as day . This was one of yr better vids, all are good. Though. Amsoil is best for me . Been using it for 15 years or so. Keep up the good work u guys.
We are working on it. Thank you for the comment. 👍
There is an inexpensive solution that you can see at this link-
www.dkcustomproducts.com/rocker-lockers-for-harley-davidson-twin-cam-motors-dk-rl-tc.htm
All these oils discussed are fine oils, Just keep oil level and clean. good vidio guys.
Glad you enjoyed, & Thank you for the comment. 👍
2005 RK 80k miles I bought in 2015 with 7k miles on it I have used Mobil 1 in all three holes ever since and never had any issues. That’s in FL heat commute to work of 27 miles each way.
Glad that you have found an oil that works for you! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
PS: :Love your products and your concern for the riding public, Thank you !!
Thanks man, appreciate your business and super happy to hear you're enjoying them!!! 👍
I have 55K miles on a 2004 Fatboy that has had nothing but organic Rotella 20w50 in it since it's second oil change. It still runs and rides great. I used it because I always had it around for my 6.0 ford f250sd.
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Where did you find Rotella 20w-50? I have never seen it listed on their website? I've used 15w-40 in vtwins before with no problems
it all comes down to changing it on reg intervals i use redline 20w-50 v twin im at 150 hp and redline works great with heat with redline the hotter the motor gets the more oil pressure it holds but i still change it at 2500 miles
Good info. Thanks. What bike and what mods for 150 hp. Must be a blast!
@@DKCustomProducts o it is 2020 m8 128
@@roncoburn7771 Very cool.
City riding or much stop and go needs more frequent oil changes. Most important is doing oil changes as needed. Mobil 1 for my bikes. Personal preference. Thks for video gentlemen..
Glad you like the video and have found an oil and regimen that works for you! Thank you for sharing and for commenting! MB
I WISH, I could find a youtube video addressing older bikes and oil. Especially EVO's. I'm still looking.
👍 MB
I've always used Lucas it seems to have a high rating for friction and temp
Lucas is a good oil. Thank you for sharing. 👍
75w140 is about the viscosity of 20w50 engine oil.)
I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in primaries and transmissions of my Harleys and Buells for 15 years. no issues. ATF is fine in Primary. I've even used Shell Rotella or Mobil 1 diesel oil in engine before. I use it in my Japanese single cylinders.
Everything you said is good advice.
Glad you like the video!
Thank you for the information and for commenting! 😎👍
Amsoil 20/50 in the engine, Amsoil primary fluid in the primary, Redline with shockproof in the transmission.
Does sportster have a separate transmission oil or do we have just engine out and primary ?

Glad you are happy with what you're running.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
Summit Racing and Jegs have Red Line for about $16 a quart. The 42804 transmission oil is about $19/qt.
redline oil is over rated but good it has additives in it that do not mix with common oils.if you decide to change over change your oil after 1000 mile again to flush your pervious brand of oil

The young dude saying he doesn’t plan on holding on to any motorcycle to 60,000 miles. I have a vehicle with 310,000 miles that I will never give up.

👍 MB
A fully synthetic oil with scheduled oil changes outlined in your owners manual should suffice. Routine maintenance is key to extending engine life.
Great point!
viscosity make a difference too
Amsoil now. At oil changes it doesn't turn that dark brown I'm accustomed to seeing. There is also a reduction in engine noise. works for me on both my vrod and softail slim. The only other oil I would use other than Amsoil is redline oil. I belive all are good if you change your oil when supposed to

Valvoline 20w50 V-Twin synthetic is my go to

I use Brad Penn green stuff in motor. Driven gl4 in gear box..AT-4 in the primary because the extra plate Barnett clutch like it(no drag)...82 shovel
Sounds like you have it dialed in for your shovel! Thanks for commenting. KP
On another channel a Harley engine builder endorses Amsoil. If he tears them down & builds them up, he should know what works well. So it’s Amsoil for me. K&N Filters.
Thanks for your comment! 👍
I use bel-ray semi synthetic I use bel-ray primary in about the only thing I do different I do use the bell rang in the transmission but I use the 85w 140
Thanks for sharing! 👍
As important as the oil is, the filter is very important. I'd like to see a video on filters.
Agree with you 100%. For close to a decade I have been using the Performance Oil Filter shown at the link below. It filters better, and there is less drag on the oil pump, resulting in more power getting to the rear tire.
Here is a video about it- ua-cam.com/video/tWtO8J1xE5E/v-deo.html

👍😎👍 KP
btw, I have had a few bikes that I've run two oil coolers on also...sometimes that is what it takes.
Here's a vid we just made on the subject- ua-cam.com/video/ILrYlhwz9QE/v-deo.html
You definitely want parts to get hotter than others.

@@DKCustomProducts yeah the S&S 124" has Evo style base gaskets so I understand what he's saying about getting it hot to seal the bases better but I think I got it at a happy medium. I'm happy with those temps. I feel it not so hard on the oil so the oil can do its job
Watched that video! I guess I do have it dialed in! Thank you!
