I foolishly got into buying guitars for a few years, and suddenly had 12 of them after living with 3 for almost 20 years. I decided it would be better to buy pedals. As it turns out, I don't have enough feet to tap 25 different pedals.
On the camera side, I've decided that I can live with my last camera purchase, but lenses are still my weakness.

This tragedy will never happen to me. I’m perfectly happy with my G7, G9, X-T1, X-T2, X-T3, and the few others. I never look on Amazon warehouse and I didn’t remove the badly scratched Ricoh Thetis from my basket in an outworldish masterpiece of strength. Why should I scroll through used offers for reds and arris? Just to know I can’t afford? Even if I would consider the X-H2, why should I check the prices for the Blackmagic 4K? Just to get a new body for my mft cinema lenses? Certainly not. That would be madness. But on the other hand, wouldn’t the 4K not deliver the cinematic footage of my DJI mini crashing into a tree? Or would canon be the one for that? Do I need full frame to get the slowmotion shot of the propellers splinter away or shall I go for super 35? Of course, I never ask myself any of that. Nor would I know about the cashback Panasonic offers for the SH1.
No, I’m sober. I really pity all of you gear junkies here.

I'm selling all my expensive Sony stuff pretty soon and going back to the GH5S. I bet if you used a G9 or G85 again, it would look great, it's lighter, and your content would just be as good. 😄 The full frame background blur thing is fun until you realise the camera is full of other compromises. @@robingossman3385 Its lightweight, the lenses are cheap and small so it's perfect for travel work. It's called Idealist. You have a target in your mind for a specific field. But you can't reach it, no matter how much research and test you do or how many expensive tools, equipment you buy. Because your ideals are at higher level than what the reality can provide to you, there is always something missing and you never get the sadisfaction of reaching your goal. But you never give up either.
This is very different than addiction.
Addict is mindlessly bound to something, repeatedly does it, because it feels good, or ok.
Idealist is a pursuit of perfection, an often unreal goal beyond what realism can provide you. But you are still locked in a research loop.
But it's also a sign sometimes, that idealism is pursued because you don't find this life enjoyable to live, so you hide the fact with some other goal to keep yourself busy.
Maybe you will never be happy, never able to reach your goal.
But a lot of other people have lesser goals and with the amount of information you share with people, from your researches, helps many many people taking the right decision.
So perhaps you won't reach your goals, but a lot of people become happier with the information you share with them.
Perhaps that's something to be happy about.

What we need is to form an open-source Camera community and produce our own cameras, software, lenses etc. And everyone credible, part of the system will share the earnings. Then we can at least "create" what we want, instead of waiting for it. And the competition will have to step up their game. This would be a very big serious project however.

I suppose I am a loser too and people do think it and the post did not give any hint of irony. But then I enjoy using different cameras and spend less per year than on a premiership football season ticket or a golf hobby. I am an end of range scavenger so have not lost vast amounts keeping an eye on the market and knowing a bargain. I remember being criticised for having a new camera from someone who had a stable of horses for fun so we do choose our extravagances but like to think of other indulgences as being for losers. At least when I comment on cameras I have used a gamut of them whilst people, especially those who have only ever heard or buy of Canon, are restricted in their hobby and ability to comment on kit in general. Especially with Canon given their lacklustre commitment to mirrorless aps-c and poor results from their 1/2.3" sensors in compacts. I have settled down to m43 now though and it seems sufficient for any hobbyist and the current attempt to make us all buy a resurrection of the 35mm film frame in mirrorless still with the massive lenses and high cost in the digital world a bit desperate to say the least. Now my funds are limited I use new Olympus bodies with their 2.5 year warranty and second hand Panasonic lenses and this extra optionality sure cuts costs and with massive secondhand availability. I actually sold my last Fuji as stabilisation is never going to be cheap and actually have not bought any new kit and am investing it in the Winter fuel bill. I was tempted to buy a 1" Panasonic compact but it will only fill up with dust if not already full like my last purchase and the GX880 is pretty small. I enjoyed my gearhead days and cannot say I really regret things.

You've found the secret: get closer! You'll always get better footage the closer you can get to your subjects.
The addiction is real. It killed me to cancel my R7 pre-order because I needed to buy a car. And I already have an R6 and R5. I guess I'll get over it. No, I won't. I'll keep lusting for one until I get it.
A couple of observations: the two blackbirds early in the video were likely a fully-fledged subadult still begging its mother for food. Baby birds will beg as long as their parents will still feed them. Just like adult children.
The black and white bird is an Eastern Kingbird, North America's largest flycatcher. And yes, you have shot it before, pretty recently as I recall.

I was on Prozac for a short time and the desire to buy gadgets just disappeared so the hit is very true of serotonin. At that time it was symbolic calculators but the never ending search for that elusive mirrorless camera that was not irritating in so many respects took over. I am sure these manufacturers knew what a lucrative weapon that cripple hammer is and wielded it with great skill and dexterity. Olympus bringing out their mirrorless stripped of all controls and a viewfinder was the opening shot in a long line of bodies need to be endlessly relaced for just a bit more but never enough. Now that the emphasis is piling on the esoteric video gubbins, understood only by bloggers in the main, what is left of us non phone, press the red button for video, still photographers really have little need to change stuff which is a relief in some ways.

I enjoy your videos a great deal. Despite your latest reviews of the H2s I just got one (I was a Canon guy for many years, but switched to Fuji a few years ago). After a few hours I am pleased with it and being an owner of an X-100S & V, XE1, XT-2 and 3…I am not missing the dials. So far I am able to program the dial/buttons in the H2s to my needs. For sure the dials are great, but so far not having them is not a deal breaker. I really enjoy the IBIS, finally I can use my Fuji 16-55 2.8 lens without getting blurry shots in lower lights. I tested this lens in my H2s, as low as 1/13 of a second and I am very happy with the results.
As you say, there is no perfect camera, otherwise this Chanel will cease to exist.

Right now with the canon R7 and the rf100-400mm, the rf100mm macro and the rf18-150mm lens I'm getting 24mm out to 640mm field of view with that 1.6x crop sensor and all of it in my bag weighs less than 10 pounds! It's also the least expensive and most fully featured kit I've ever carried lol! I'm selling off a lot of my extra stuff. Thank you Canon!

Kasey, I know exactly what you're going through. I have GAS...badly. I have the GH5, S1H, A7S3, A74, Canon R5, XT4 and now a GH6. Do I use them all? Yes, but nowhere as much as if I only had one or two bodies. I have been planning on consolidating to two systems, but they all have advantages and disadvantages. I am primarily a filmmaker and while the S1H/GH5 gets most of the usage in that area, I wanted something with vastly better AF for times when I am filming alone. I love manually focusing though. I went on this journey to create and now I am always watching and see what others are doing...that I have to stop. Anyway, if you ever want to trade, let me know.

    • @sliceofmymind

@thailander The GH5 isn't great in low light. I use the 25 1.4 II ASPH, 10-25 1.7 and Sigma 18-35 with speedbooster on the GH5/GH6. I highly recommend the GH5S if you are mainly doing video in low light.

Yeah, your video dropped just as I was opening up McBain's website to look at lenses. I think gear addiction is one part dopamine dragon chasing and another part experience dragon chasing. I love learning new gear so much, even when the long term prospects are limited by said gear's long term limitations.
I should have just been a womanizer. It would have been cheaper even if you can't sell them when you are done with them.

Let's talk about the time my girlfriend gifted me a 20G aquarium and a book about aquascaping, secretly she knew I think. A year later I had 15 aquariums from 5G to 75G in a bachelor apartment?! It took me five days to move everything from there into a 1 bedroom so I could live in a place that wasn't 85% humidity in the winter. Clearest my pores have ever been mind you, but still.

I have the A7siii and a BMPCC 6K Pro. Two worlds I sit in. One arse check on either chair, the cushions differ (the Blackmagic’s is less comfortable than the Sony’s) so one cheek sits more comfortably but grows lazy and flabbier while the other works overtime but is more contented and has found greater meaning and satisfaction, either way both are often empty vessels for a load of shit.

Lens won't create the 3d pop, see your duck is well framed and on a plane. The trees in background create a "wall" ending the depth, the branch at the front with the lighter green creates the shallow foreground and the water is the ground that goes up and to the right (lighting, colouring shades lead the eye), creating that depth. The duck has lighting that adds to that effect. Think of it like video game 3d modelling, you've probably seen a screenshot of character model inside an editor. You can recreate at home using... a box... no one is reading this...

Definitely, the GAS is real, for camera users.
However, there are some ways to tackle it, or to manage it. First, you need to just find a good combination of body+lenses that fit at least 80% what you want and need to do, and that you enjoy using.
Then, it depends. You either quit your GAS additiction, like you would quit smoking. Or you get a Gear Renting Syndrome instead, which is cheaper, and can help you relieve some of the GAS pain after using some rented gear. Or... you can develop Gear Trading Syndrome (basically a hybrid between GAS and GRS presented above), where you cotinuously buy and sell gear, so you don't end up amassing 10 bodies and 30 lenses, but you change some of them.
In the best scenario, you understand that new gear is a ton of marketing, and except for some uses and some particular products, they won't bring you a game-changing experience in any way, compared with what you are using now (unless you use only 10+ year old gear). And you invest in courses, lighting gear, car, travel etc., that will really help you up your game and get great photos, while also making you enjoy it.
Also, I enjoy your intro music, hope you will publish a full-version song out of it someday. And like your new intro, featuring a more visible Thor's Canon cripple hammer.

The fact you do comedy in your content makes the likelihood of staying relevant very high.
I can see in the next 4yrs channels dyeing off if they don't integrate a secondary aspect.
Prosumer cameras have reached there peak. Real new additions would put them out of affordability. I can see the addition of Ai being a big market shift.
