  • Gear obsession. There are always two sides to the story. Camera gear can be fun to obsess about. But filming on cheap budget gear is also fun. Focusing on specs and gear has it's pros and cons. Always searching for the best camera, full frame or crop, 10 bit or 8 bit, amazing autofocus vs manual vintage lenses. Could we all just get away with an action cam and move on?

Lol, how could I or anybody possibly be upset, Kasey's a sweetheart. I don't care what he eats and I laughed when he said I made my movie 100 years ago, it sure feels like it. I don't talk to people much because I'm a recluse who leaves people alone so they can do what they want. Happy holidays everyone.

Honestly there are enough camera channels that are trying way too hard to be liked by the camera companies - giving rave reviews to basically everything. You are one of the few channels that is willing to point out the defects and the pros and cons. It's refreshing.

I object much more to what are essentially advertisements being passed off as reviews. Like when a UA-camr does a review of 10 different ND filters, all of which have affiliate links. The sense of objectivity just dissolves. An honest *review* doesn't want to sell me anything (let alone a particular brand) and would not include affiliate links. @@RichardoBrit

I'm on a mission to downsize, on a budget. I took a Lumix GX80/85 out for a 6am wander down the beach this morning, just to see what the video was like. I bought it as a backup street photography camera but found the cinelike d hack. What a great little b-roll video camera, a thrill to use! No cage, no external mic, tiny, portable... and fun. Cost me £200, including the lens, and the footage looks great. It's another tool to help me tell my story. Don't get wrapped up in the technical shit, kids, concentrate on your content. And use gear that doesn't distract you from that.

  • @danncorbit3623

I think the focus of Marcus' message is that all gear (low cost or high cost) is secondary. The primary focus should be the content of the message and the delivery of the message. A $75k pro video setup means nothing with a boring message, which is delivered in a sweaty pool of lameness. Now, a search for equipment can have real value. For instance, you have discovered that a high frame rate is valuable for what you enjoy. If you never tried different equipment, how would you have discovered that frame rate is important to you? I have bought a lot of stuff (kind of embarrassing, in fact) but now I know what I like and what I really don't need. And I don't buy stuff that I really can't afford. So now, I give stuff I don't use to friends and family. So the gear search can have a meaningful purpose if we don't fall in love with the search and forget why we're searching.

Well put! A journey has to start somewhere. I thought that if I were clever enough and did enough research I could know, without much or any personal experience, what purchase would perfectly suit my needs and desires. Didn't matter the domain - photography gear, guitar gear, software, clothes - there's always some refinement after you get the product and incorporate it into your life. These "ultimately unsuitable" purchases aren't failures on our part, and our "rejections" of them aren't indictments of the products that we started with - they may be perfect for other purposes.

Great video! It's very easy to get wrapped up in gear. I've ran my own business for 6 years and G.A.S became a fatal flaw. The truth is, unfortunatley UA-camrs need views and new gear gets more views. This has contributed to throwaway culture and anxieties about kit. A great message for people who are more interested in the art, is that almost any camera built in the last 5-10 years will be suffient. Invest the time in learning the craft.

Great video today, Kasey. Last month I got sick of all the "how to" content I was semi-consuming (watching instead of putting into practice) and made a big sign that said, "Make Things!" I think the focus on making things makes the recounting of gear experiences (or filming tips, ...) worth watching. You aren't just reading spec sheets, you are using these things to film comedic bits and vlogs around town with nature and street. The field experience is useful because it is very approachable. No matter what my ultimate aspirations are, I am much closer in spirit to "I have this janky window and I'll try a few things to improve but if it is too much then f it" and "I'm going to just take pics of some crap in my neighborhood" than "how do I set up lighting for corporate head shot day." Even when our use cases aren't in alignment, we can relate to yours as travelers on our own parallel journeys for our "perfect camera."
Now, I'm looking forward to seeing some Better Lighting for Bullshit UA-camrs videos!

  • @mxlunab

I came here at first for the comedy, and then later understood what the search for the perfect camera is - it's not about the one-size-fits-all perfect one, but about the one that is perfect for you and what you want to do with it. I keep coming back for honest pros and cons, to be talked out of mindless GAS, and to be reminded to ask: what is the perfect camera for me? In all honesty, I still don't know. This channel helped me see that it's not about specs, it's that I'm not yet in love with what I got, so I must keep looking.
Anyway, while you can hear the money truck backing up into other youtube photographers/videographers' garages, Kasey is here just looking for something specific that he knows will satisfy his needs, and we get some comedy as a bonus. Never sell out!

These days, often looking for camera a few years older and used…certainly at least for lenses. Loved the ‘having fun with cameras’. Have seen other channels who have done the same…they loved small cameras and now they are often testing or using FF…and the funny part, often image quality not much different, at least on UA-cam.

Your reviews are the most useful I've seen on YT. Too many big channels demonstrate their skills, experience and production capabilities, and make it look like that's the gear. Particularly as a more basic user, that means you'll see gear which seems to fit your every need, only to realise it simply doesn't in real world conditions, with your own capabilities. I think that's a big driving factor behind gear obsession and upgrading gear. Constant disappointment when you can't achieve what was promised. I feel like your videos give a more balanced view on what you'll really get out of certain gear, warts and all.

When it comes too gear the important distinction to make is between Needs and Wants. For the most part these components we assemble to capture visual ellements are a blend of Tools and Toys. On the tech side there are distinct features that are required to capture the esthetic we aim for, but their are also features that make that more effective and efficient and for many of us it makes it fun and exciting to be able to capture more of the ellements we are compelled by. I actually quite enjoy your rants because I have many of the same gripes with gear that begins to peek my interest then falls flat on delivery because it has been crippled to protect products in the manufactures line of competing tools. It's very easy to fall into that spiral of obsessing over the capabilities or more favorable workflow and image quality offered by systems and components that just work better and more intuitively. I don't think that anyone who identifies with the journey you are on, or the considerations you share thinks you are a moron, Markus included. He does share his "simple and effective is best" attitude toward his workflow but he also does explore the possibilities and collects all the different toys as well. We could all be called hypocritical, if we were examined through a critical lens, but those who understand the complexities of life as an obsessive creative, understand that it is higher standards that remain as the goal for us to achieve better quality in our work and what we share. There are simple and effective tools that can get the job done for sure, but doing it better, and capturing the beautiful or interesting ellements that compell us at a level of quality that evokes the consideration of others in the same way we are affected makes it soo much more fun and worth while. I mean, The Blaire Witch Project was shot on cam corders, so it is possible to make a movie cheap, but try telling Roger Deakins he doesn't need all the tools he uses or the set design and lighting and post process. It's natural to question yourself from time to time, this is how most people with a conscience continue to develop, it's actually the morons that never consider information or ideas that conflict with their personal bias. This was a good video, I've been thinking about many of the things you spoke too myself. 👍

Your studio setup is actually pretty solid. Nice background pieces in nice places and good choice filming into the corner. If you wanted to improve it, you could add maybe a tad more contrast in the grade, or even just some negative fill to your left (that is, to camera-right) :) Dig your honesty and genuine vibes, whether with gear or self. If you want to both be nice and stay honest, you can try compliment sandwiches, such as, "8k is really nice for zooming in in post; it can make images too sharp sometimes, but that can be somewhat subjective and softened with filters or in post if desired." I use this technique when I'm directing, and most people seem to appreciate it

It might be local to me but have you ever seen that commercial play on youtube for Forward a new kind of doctors office. The audio clipping is so bad but they decided to just go with final product. It should have just been reshot the audio is so bad.

Vintage glass and solid bodies are like milf and homey... ah, milk and honey. I was playing with my first gen helios 44-2 yesterday and the sharpness and pop blew my mind again- as an 88 on apsc. Locking off some good glass on a decent body, even if it doesn't have 240p 4k, is what the chase is all about.

It will always be a good thing to buy used gear. If you are lucky, you get the same or even more money back, when later you sell it.
    I was unlucky.
    I bought a Fuji X-E2 for 180, sold it for 200.
If I had kept it only one more year!
    Today's prices are 400 to 500 for a Fuji X-E2 used.

Some film festivals are now getting 8,000 plus entries a year in an age where technology has brought gear into the hands of many at increasingly lower costs. Someone with a dishwashing job these days with a little discipline can save up and get the tools ticking all the needed boxes to start on a short film or whatever project. Even if you produce something that is incredible on an older used camera and get it out there, you'll have people gravitating towards you, new network opportunities and gear will simply fall in place moving forward. These days renting gear has become increasingly less expensive.
I've seen kids show up to a BMX race on cheap bikes blow away other BMX riders with expensive bikes, completely dressed to the part with race jerseys and slick shoes.

It all just depends. Without "gear obsession" i would have never thought about some specific lenses, mainly primes a lot, but later enjoyed them more and for other reasons i expected. For example my early gear obsession sold me on a 50mm 2.8 Macro. Little did i know that this single lens was not only for years my "fast" 50mm prime beside macro but also opened my eyes for prime lenses in general because i loved how versatile this 50mm 2.8 (1:1) macro lens was. The fact i had nearly 10 50mm prime lenses a year later says it all. 50mm is small, short, light, simple and especially cheap/affordable. Also i rather have 5 "bad" 50mm vintage lenses with specific characteristics and usecases to pick for 300-500$ all together over a more expensive, modern, clinical sharp lens for 600$.
Same goes for "vintage" point and shoots. Just out of curiosity i got a "better" camera than my first ever camera, a Sony P100 from 2004. P200 and W830 in the beginning, never bought to replace any camera or phone in general, the W830 literally replaced my camera for most usecases and with its 8x optical zoom at anything beyond effective 50mm it outperforms the smartphone without dedicates tele-camera very much and under good light even more.
After the W830 and P200 i got a bit into the market, how easy they are to work on and its prices for smaller point and shoots. At some times i had over 10 point and shoots, varying from about 2005 to 2015. They were all either broken, had dust on sensor/lens, basically needed some work or parts and therefor a lot cheaper. For some months i enjoyed them in the vitrine, but in the end most of them were sold with a profit for the sake of disassembling/repairing/cleaning/refurbishing.
On the other side, my gear obsession once forced me to think i need everything from ultrawide to tele range, so i ended up with pretty bad and useless zoom lenses, basically the "holy trinity", just the bottom end of the budget with entry level or outdated gear. One of the lenses broke (75-300), another one i sold with a reasonable loss (16-35 2.8) and in the best case i just lost "little" by selling the standard 24-105 F4 later.

GH5 and G9 old? I would say still very modern, just not on par regarding to autofocus, tracking etc.
Its hard to call my tiny everyday point and shoot from 2014 "old" since its a not too bad 20MP CCD camera with enough light. My first camera ever, A Sony P100 from 2004 tho i can definitely call old or even a dinosaur. Yet the images are nearly comparable to the W830 from 2014, at least when you dont zoom in the image.

Good video Kasey. The comedic element you bring to the table is why I watch, not so much for what camera is better etc. I do feel like “Camera UA-cam” has a problem where like 90% of its “creators” are just salespeople making reviews to push affiliate links and brand deals. They manufacture GAS for the most part, and save for 4-5 channels, most are implicated in this. Very few of them are actually working shooters, just spec-masters. It’s been refreshing to see actual working DPs come to UA-cam now with channels teaching real skills instead selling prosumer products like most other channels do. Your comedic takes and skits is what puts you at the top of my list, and making videos like this too. It’s refreshing. Appreciate you!

I absolutely rely on you and a small number of other frank reviewers to point out the negatives, especially on finicky 'opinion' points like comparing IBIS, lens IS, dynamic range, '3D pop' etc because so few reviewers or sites will put their own selves into the work. They'd rather hide behind test charts and MTF figures which are almost meaningless for anyone but astrophotographers and pros.

Yo Kasey, do you still use the SLR Magic 12mm? I recently bought an OG, and it came with that lens. I like it, but it is super heavy for such a small lens. My favorite is the Pani 12-35 f2.8, and the Canon 16-35 F4 with the Metabones .71 Speedbooster. The Speedbooster turns it into a 35mm f2.8, but its also heavy. The Pani 12-35 is very light and it is excellent. For the battery solution, I went with the cheaper Smallrig NPF adapter. It is exactly like the one you got, but it doesn't have the on and off switch, or the battery level meter. Plus it is half the price. Keep up the great work. I spend a lot of money on gear, but only because I like to try out different setups, not because I need the latest and the greatest. Some people like $50,000 cars, I rather have 50 things, that cost a thousand dollars.

You're right to be critical. Camera makers have done many wrong turns in digital photography over the last 15 years. Around 2010 they had beautiful CCD sensors without Bayer filters, that produced magical images. (Just look up any movie or TV series that was shot on the Sony F35 or Panavision Genesis; absolutely beautiful.) Then they ditched the CCD technology and went for CMOS Bayer sensors that have better numbers on the spec sheet but look flat and boring compared to CCDs. Digital photography needs to get back to the basics.

While trying to fill my heart with the goodness of the cheap gear, we stray. The temptation is always there telling us that the grass may be greener on the other side. This year alone I bought tested and sold about 30K worth of camera gear and now I intend to go back to one or two cameras and stop obsessing about the gear so much. Have I learned my lesson? Yes. Will I never do it again? Doubt it.

Yeah…these companies do cripple cameras even though they swear they don’t. That’s why I haven’t upgraded from my 32MP Canon EOS R…nothing else is flawlessly worth the upgrade. Many come close, but putting to make me ditch the 32MP EOS R. I’ve just been investing in L-Series glass. When they release the R1, R5C II, R5II, R3 II, then maybe I’ll consider…but they really need IBIS in more Canon cameras and increased dynamic range for that cinematic depth
