3 months ago I bought a new 2019 TRD Off Road DCSB. I’m 5’8” and find the seating position comfortable. I drive a lot - 13500 miles in the past 3 months. I’m averaging 20-22 MPG, high performance was 26 on a trip between Chattanooga and Owensboro KY and back. I did not get a sunroof as it takes about 2 inches or so away from the headroom. I'm 6'5" and wanted to purchase a Tacoma. The Toyota salesman said: "Don't even try to fit in there". He was correct, after pushing the seat all the way back, 1/3 of my view out the front was the hood.
Toyota designs their vehicles like they do, so they last. Build the truck to handle 500hp, put only 278hp into it. Won't break. Unlike others, design for 500hp, put 550hp into it. Toyota has a history of being conservative when it comes to new tech, as they want their stuff to survive their vigorous testing. Just look at the other trucks out there and their reliability, it shows.
@kiki the gerbil If you go to TacomaWorld forums, they're making a Turbo kit for the Tacoma now, that's handling that much HP w/o an issue. Might wanna do a little research before spurting off what you don't actually know.

I own and daily drive a 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road, I love the thing. However almost every thing you guys complained about I can easily relate to, even in a truck 13 years older 😂
I'm 5'10 and it fits me fine and I have LONG legs. Also I've heard from people that are 6'2 and they fit just fine in it; not sure what people are complaining about.
It's damped/damping/damper when you're talking about resistance proportional to the velocity of the moving object. Dampened/dampening/dampener is all about moisture.
I have a 2019 tacoma and the odd thing is that I’m 5’10 and 160lbs and have never hit my knees on the wheel but my dad who is 5’8 and 220 always locks my wheel up getting in and out. I find it odd that I’m between your heights and have no problem with something you have problems with... anyway, love your reviews and channel. And Tacoma forever
This is my favorite midsize truck hands down. The complaints they pointed out I understand but none of that bothers me and still love it over all the other midsize trucks. But the fact this taco is so outdated and old and yet still is on top and competing with all the other brands’ newest updates is amazing. That says a lot. When Toyota decides to update the taco again it’s gonna blow everything out of the water. Same with the updated 4runner and tundra coming soon.
The TRD with the automatic ought to be called the #TRDAmateur . In order to be called a Pro, the #Manual should be mandatory. As regards colour choice, many StraightPipes viewers may be too young to remember when customers had 12-20 colour choices with mainstream vehicles. Lastly, for the price of this vehicle, the 4.6 V8 ought to be an option.
@@bradgt5130 No you've always been able to get a MT on the Pro, at least in the US. Don't know if that is different in CA, but I thought you could there as well.
I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport with the Double Cab and Short Bed in manual. I am 6'1" and my seating position feels okay to me. I think it is particularly due to not having a moon roof so I have an extra inch or two of head room. I am also used to the lower seating position because I came from a 2013 VW Golf R which also felt like I was sitting on the floor. Beyond that, I am also glad I got the manual because I see everyone online complain about the automatic transmission. I just wish I had gone with the TRD Off-road trim instead of the sport so I could be rocking Bilstein shocks and a locking rear differential. Just means I'll have to go after market on those once I'm done paying off my loan.
Agree, 5 speed auto in my FJ is lame too 😂 super reliable though! I think that's where the slow shifts and gear hunting comes from, no need for smooth shifting that rides out the clutch packs, and holding gears making it tough on the engine. Also no point for more than 6 gears, they're built to be a rugged off-roader after all 🤷
@@manniefresh730 I love my Tacoma TRD Sport. It has been holding up well. It has been on long road trips up and down the East Coast of the US and has never given me an issue. At some point I plan to make it more off road worthy with better suspension and maybe instead an airlocker in the rear.
I’ve got a 2017 Tacoma, bought it brand new. Now I’ve got 70,000 miles. Never felt that the seating position was bad. Wish it was electric adjustable, and wish it could be adjusted up and down, but really not as bad as many reviews say. I’m also someone that comes from owning a 2017 Camaro SS, 2016 Ram 2500 diesel, 2014 Honda Accord, 2012 Toyota Prius. I’ve gone through a lot of vehicles. It’s a great truck that holds value really well, if you care about re-sale value. Transmission could be better, that’s for sure. Although after the trans flash and update, it’s been better!
I own a 2019 TRD Pro and I actually like the Desert Air Intake. I feel like it gives it character, plus the airbox is sealed with a one-way valve that I would assume is decent at preventing water intrusion (not about to test that theory though). I'm 5' 10" and fit in the truck just fine, but headroom is a bit tight. Really my only complaint is that ancient transmission, but you learn to live with it in favor of an otherwise great truck. I love mine and can't recommend enough for anyone even remotely interested in offroading.
I actually just got a 2019 Voodoo blue Tacoma pro. I honestly love it! I see it as my perfect truck, but I can definitely see reasons other people wouldn't want it. Mainly cause it is more compacted which I love but some people need and want the more room. But honestly I love the feel of it and love the look! 😁👍🏼
The Tacoma looks cool but beyond that it doesn't seem very functional. Too many ergonomic compromises because of the weird proportions of the cab. Also nice throwback clip to 5K subs.
I own a 3rd gen tacoma and I'm also 6 foot, I can tell you now I got to lay the back of seat down so my head isn't in the roof, as far as sun visors, forget it. This truck is made for people around 5'7 or shorter.
I’ll pick Nissan Frontier pro4x and it’s only $35000 loaded in Canada You get moon roof, leather, heated seats, backup camera, 10 speaker Rockford fostgate, skid plates, rear locker, active abs, the list goes on and on
I'm 5'11" and had a 18' Taco. The cab was just way too cramped at the driver seat and back seats. Not alot of head space especially in the back. I traded it in for a Tundra TRD Pro and could not be happier.
I owned a 91 Toyota pickup (before they called it a Taco) and the driving position was exactly as you’ve describe on the new one. I absolutely loved it, it reminded me of how high I was off the ground without the roof being too high. I also like the light steering, it’s not a sports car. My current favorite is the Jeep Renegade concept pickup from a few years back, a close second is the that baby blue two door Jeep concept (the four door is way too long), and the Taco is third. In a few years I expect to be on the market for a small pickup, hopefully by then someone will have an small electric pickup, not hybrid, just electric motor & batteries, like our old RC cars.....simple. Thanks for a great review gentlemen 🍺
I really wanted to like the Tacoma, it’s my favorite looking small truck. I took it for a test drive and had the same problem, my hair is on the headliner and my legs were up in an awkward position. I also couldn’t get in without hitting the steering wheel. It was such a let down knowing I can’t fit in it.
I am 5'4" and having no problem get in and out of my 2019 Tacoma and 2017 4Runner TRD PRO. My tacoma MPG is 20.5 in both of city and highway together. One thing I don't like is the loud engine noise when climbing up hill. It is a lot more noisier than my previous 2005 Taco TRD. Over all it is a very beautiful Sport TRD truck and love it.
Last year I traded my 2016 F-150 4 door FX4 for a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4 door short bed. You can't really compare both trucks because the F-150 is so much bigger and the 3.5 Ecoboost is so much more powerful. My thing was, I found myself most days driving to work by myself in the F-150. It was more truck than I needed and it was too big for my garage which means I always had to dig my truck out after lake-effect snow storms. The Taco fits in the garage easy, is still great in the snow, and is easier to park in regular parking spaces. I do agree that the driving position is a bit weird, but I've adjusted. I'm 5'10" all torso with short Mexican legs...it works for me. The back seat is also pretty tight for full sized people. But to me you don't buy the Taco for that. The best thing about the Taco...besides the off-road prowess, is the resale value. These things hold their value like crazy. And most Truck people that you meet will agree that it's a great truck for going and doing truck things. Or at least looking like you're ready to do truck things...
I rather get TRD off-road since you can have a 6 ft bed, with the access cab. I never been offroading with more than 1 other person, or if there was 4 of us they had their own truck.
I own a 2017 TRD Off-Road, I’m about 5’9 and I will admit that the seating position does get annoying on long road trips. Toyota did fix most of the complaints for the 2020 model. Just annoying that Toyota would get these simple things wrong...
It is the best, people in the US just care about the first impressions, the competition trucks will last 2 - 3 years like new, and then start thinking about getting new one, the Tacoma is a truck you can actually keep for 20 years if you want
People complain about the seating position im 6'3 and ur right the positioning was awful, thankfully i found these front half metal seat risers that raise the front 1 1/4 without sacrificing head room at all and i cant lie feels perfect for me evan though I' tall. I would recommend everyone to buy these risers as soon and u get ur tuck night and day difference.
Before buying my 2019 Civic Type R I test drove a Tacoma and my left knee kept rubbing against the speaker grille which hurts after awhile, it was an auto no go for me and walked away.
I'm somewhere between 5'10 and 5'11 - I dont feel cramped or have any problems at all! I'm always surprised to hear the complaints that people have . But considering the number of people who have complained I must be in the minority... Although the truck definitely needs more power and that transmission needs to be tamed. I put the 93 octane OVtune on my truck and the transmission was remapped- so it shifts like a normal vehicle, and power at the crank is now somewhere around 320 HP and 320 ftlbs!
Toyota need to step their game up. Been relying on their reputation for reliability way too long now and that alone isn't gonna fly in today's competitive market.
I have a 2016 Tacoma and you don't need a rear window defroster. I am 5'10 and I am comfortable while driving. I sold my ten year old Tacoma for 11,000 usd. It only had 90k miles.
Hood scoops are for cooling down a top mounted intercooler. Tacoma doesn't have this part because it is not turbocharged and if it were the intercooler would most likely be front mounted due to the tall V engine.
Opening the hood scoop to allow more air into the engine bay in a Tacoma would create wind drag without horsepower gains because there is no intercooler.
There are a few things you guys missed or got wrong. 1. The "snorkel" is a desert air intake. Which is useful when driving in groups so your truck does not suck up all the dusk that gets kicked up. Also it's and option it does not come on every pro model. 2. I have a 2018 TRD Off-road I'm 5'11" and have no issues with head room. However I don't have the sunroof option and I've heard this makes a big difference. 3. Seating position. I know I'm in the minority but I actually don't mind the seating position too much. The new 2020 Tacoma come with power seats that let you adjust the position better. 4. Also for the 2020 model they have led projector headlights. 5. And the infotainment system got an update with bigger screen. Android auto. Apple car play. And physical buttons
2020 they gotta fix that automatic transmission, LED lights, rear drum breaks gotta go, update dash... come on Toyota plz! Then I’ll buy one! 💯 beautiful truck but beauty only goes so far
Halogen headlights, fake hood scoop, an underpowered engine, sluggish transmission, crappy steering and brakes, poor ergonomics, garbage fuel economy, for the better part of 60K Canadian... What a joke.
Agreed 100% the thing that's keeping me from buying a Toyota truck is the over inflated price and lack of innovation/ technology. You get so much more for your money from other manufacturers, and dont get me started on reliability, the truck market is so competitive they are all reliable.
I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma access Cab TRD sport 4x4 4.0L V6 with 15x,xxx miles. The truck has been great, reliable, useful. My only complaint with the truck is the seating position. It isn't awkward seating position. I have seen on the new 2020 Tacoma the seats are now 10-way power adjustable to fix the seating position.
Hey guys. I’ve driven a few of these Tacomas. I agree that the seating position is different but I felt comfortable the more time I spent behind the wheel. I just drove a manual trd sport short bed yesterday. I loved it. And on another note, no reviewer ever seems to bring up the fact that on a ranger or Colorado you cannot get a moonroof no matter what trim level. Tacoma is the only one.
I've got 92-93K miles on my 2019 TRD Off Road (bought it new Jan '19)...a lot of those miles in 4WD. I've found this truck to be highly capable and dependable (on and off road)...and comfortable ENOUGH - LOL. Yes, my GMC full size trucks/SUVs are much more comfortable. I am 5'9". However the Tacoma is able to go down our farm/river trails (our farm is bordered by a river) whereas the GMC Trucks are too big. We have another Tacoma (now my son's truck) - it is a 2002 TRD Off Road (V6) 4x4...it has around 240K miles. Both of these trucks get used - we own a horse farm. I've owned tons of Jeeps over the years (loved the CJs), Fords, GMCs (I have 3 now), but to me Toyota Trucks have everything beat for capability, reliability and dependability.
I have a 13 Taco with the 4 liter V6 and a 5 speed Auto...when I may the throttle it goes like the devil is coming for its soul. I recently switched plugs to NGK iridium and it seems to run even better. 4 litre 1gr fe engine is a beast.
@@2011buddylee Have you ever driven one...if not how the fuck would you know how well it performs. I would say 4 litre is better than the 3.5 V6 D4S engine.
Since the beginning of your channel, thank you for using the word "damped" correctly! It gets annoying hearing others talk about a bouncy vs a wet ride quality.
5"8'. My TRD Sport 4x4 feels great. The truck is built like a tank. Personally, I love the fact that it has some character. When you refine the vehicle to the point where it gets everything right, it becomes boring and bland. One thing is for sure, the Tacoma is neither boring nor bland.
The Tacoma was redesigned and released in 2015 as a 2016 model yet it's outdated. The Ranger was redesigned and released in 2012 with a mid cycle refresh but it's more modern than the Tacoma? I sat it the Ranger and it felt narrower then the Toyota. The infotainment screen is yucky in my opinion. I ended up buying a Tacoma. I have driven my 2019 Tacoma for almost 4400 miles thus far and I love every minute of it. 2019 Tacoma TRD 4x4 OFF ROAD.

I'm 6'5" and wanted to purchase a Tacoma. The Toyota salesman said: "Don't even try to fit in there". He was correct, after pushing the seat all the way back, 1/3 of my view out the front was the hood.
Not gunna lie... I’m 5’4 and I’m pretty comfortable in the Tacoma😂
@straightpipes put me as a guest on a episode one day ❤️
raymond silva japanese height
I’m same height and love my Tacoma seats
What about 6'5" 260lbs man?
5'8 and I can't wait to get a Tacoma lol
Tacoma is more reliable than everything
Keoki johnson was*
Toyota designs their vehicles like they do, so they last.
J Mackin I don't know what you're reading, but man, I haven't heard something that stupid in a long ass time. Jeez...
Not anymore
I own and daily drive a 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road, I love the thing. However almost every thing you guys complained about I can easily relate to, even in a truck 13 years older 😂
5’9 and I fit perfectly in my taco, I think I’m the only one who likes the seating position
123takua I own a second gen taco and I’m 6’4(allllll legs) and I love the seating position ;)
I’m 6’ tall, fit great. Everything works great and I average 20 mpg in town with a 2” lift and oversized tires.
Sounds like your dad needs more vegetables and less McDonalds!
Love when trucks come prepare for off roading from factory. My second favorite, just behind the RAPTOR.
@NinjaMonsterMG What up?!
Thanks for the feedback and support. I REALLY appreciate it! 👊🏼
I daily a Taco and I have no complaints about seating or anything, and I'm 6 foot!
Right Lane Hog this is the first year a manual has ever been offered on the pro.
LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!!!!!
I'm 6'3 and I have a 2018 TRD offroad tacoma in quicksand and I'm actually comfortable with the drivers position
Luke Good that’s the type of person that buys it. For looks. Not anything else
@@ItzzTesta You’re not very smart
Just bought this truck last Wednesday and love it. I am 6'4 and I fit fine
To counter your point, I leased a 2016 and barely fit at 6'3". It was a huge reason in getting rid of it.
In the states, you can get the TRD pro without the “snorkel” option
The Tacoma looks cool but beyond that it doesn't seem very functional. Too many ergonomic compromises because of the weird proportions of the cab. Also nice throwback clip to 5K subs.
harrismi7 The cab hasn’t been designed for the North American market
The Tacoma is only for North America
Shakerhood69 right, but not correctly to fix us!
How so? Best truck I’ve owned especially in my work. You have zero knowledge
harrismi7 I’m sorry, thought you knew about the “on the floor “ seating position
I literally don't get why you guys aren't famous! These are like such good crafted videos unlike some others
I own a 3rd gen tacoma and I'm also 6 foot, I can tell you now I got to lay the back of seat down so my head isn't in the roof, as far as sun visors, forget it. This truck is made for people around 5'7 or shorter.
I’ll pick Nissan Frontier pro4x and it’s only $35000 loaded in Canada
You get moon roof, leather, heated seats, backup camera, 10 speaker Rockford fostgate, skid plates, rear locker, active abs, the list goes on and on
Yeah but it's fugly
Yeah because it's a 14 year old design.
I'm 5'11" and had a 18' Taco. The cab was just way too cramped at the driver seat and back seats. Not alot of head space especially in the back. I traded it in for a Tundra TRD Pro and could not be happier.
This truck seems like a cutting edge 2009 model.
I work at the plant building Tundras and Tacomas. Getting in and out of the Tacomas is a pain in the ass. Especially with me being 6ft tall.
You need yoga.
Stretch out more Nancy.
Im 5’5 with a manual taco. I feel PERFECTLY comfortable. Ovtuned with an exhaust so I got torque and horsepower
I'm 5' 11" and fit fine, but I've been driving a Taco for years, so maybe I'm just used to it?
I’m 5’11 and I daily a Tacoma. Fits fine for me!
It fits short people like you, but anyone taller than 6 it's a PITA
I own a 2017 TRD Off-Road, I’m about
5’9 and I will admit that the seating position does get annoying on long road trips. Toyota did fix most of the complaints for the 2020 model. Just annoying that Toyota would get these simple things wrong...
You guys should review a manual Tacoma, I'd love to hear your take on it
It is the best, people in the US just care about the first impressions, the competition trucks will last 2 - 3 years like new, and then start thinking about getting new one, the Tacoma is a truck you can actually keep for 20 years if you want
You can keep any vehicle for 20years (barring the rust belt) with proper care,
People complain about the seating position im 6'3 and ur right the positioning was awful, thankfully i found these front half metal seat risers that raise the front 1 1/4 without sacrificing head room at all and i cant lie feels perfect for me evan though I' tall.
The Tacoma just looks and function normally but nothing exciting, except that it more updated.
More reliable than Ford, GMC, and Nissan.
Toyota need to step their game up. Been relying on their reputation for reliability way too long now and that alone isn't gonna fly in today's competitive market.
Electronic break easily
Y’all should review the dinosaur of the segment, the Nissan Frontier
I love my Nissan Frontier pro4x
Joel LeRue I love mine too
I have a 2016 Tacoma and you don't need a rear window defroster. I am 5'10 and I am comfortable while driving. I sold my ten year old Tacoma for 11,000 usd. It only had 90k miles.
The fake snorkel is super lame.
Why not make the scoop functional?
Hood scoops are for cooling down a top mounted intercooler. Tacoma doesn't have this part because it is not turbocharged and if it were the intercooler would most likely be front mounted due to the tall V engine.
@@kevinn6882 you can use a hood scoop for anything. Lots of old cars used them as air intakes. It's a hole in the hood man, it can do whatever.
Opening the hood scoop to allow more air into the engine bay in a Tacoma would create wind drag without horsepower gains because there is no intercooler.
@@kevinn6882 bro I'm talking about using it as an air intake instead of the fake snorkel.
I see what you mean now. Good point.
💯 beautiful truck but beauty only goes so far
smalltownmoto 1 well you’re getting LED headlights.
And a updated Infotainment system
You're also getting powered seats with lumbar support, an improved automatic transmission. Better suspension
I just bought a 2019 Tacoma trd pro with 15k miles on it and I love it
FYI that Screen has been in the Taco since 2016 my brother had it, until the it stopped functioning and out of warranty.....
As a USA viewer I appreciate the conversions!
Halogen headlights, fake hood scoop, an underpowered engine, sluggish transmission, crappy steering and brakes, poor ergonomics, garbage fuel economy, for the better part of 60K Canadian... What a joke.
DCassidy42 manual adjusting seat too.
Agreed 100% the thing that's keeping me from buying a Toyota truck is the over inflated price and lack of innovation/ technology. You get so much more for your money from other manufacturers, and dont get me started on reliability, the truck market is so competitive they are all reliable.
ncurc 97 luckily the 2020 model is a big change tech wise. Everything got upgraded for this kind of stuff
@Michael Belluomo if that's the case the Corolla should cost much more than a Chevrolet cruz, but it doesn't.
Talk about the Hilux here in Australia. Outdated everything, 174 hp, same price as the Tacoma smh
That snorkel sucks (see what I did there?)
Eh.
4/10
Joshua Grey Jensen I’m here all week
5/7 🤐
That snorkel blows would have been better imo 4/10
Tacoma is the only one.
solid ranting sessions, nice throwback vids. good job guys
I test drove one recently, had to move my seat all the way to the back. Felt like i was sitting on the floor trying to drive this thing.
The snorkel is an option..not standard. Unless it's standard for Canada eh?
Unfortunately it come standard (for 2019) for the TRD Pro in Canada
@@patjoseph4254 Dang that stinks
I’m 5”8 and I fit perfectly in my 2002 tacoma
Drove a new Tacoma recently and felt super cramped at 6'2"
Since the beginning of your channel, thank you for using the word "damped" correctly! It gets annoying hearing others talk about a bouncy vs a wet ride quality.
Will keep it up
Hands down best truck out there
not according to pretty much all the credible reviewers/journalists...
I think u guys should definitely do the comparison
Can’t get the manual TRD Pro with a 6ft bed 🙄
Also should’ve watched this before I went to test drive one yesterday... you guys are so on point
Why would you get a off road truck with a terrible departure Angle and long wheelbase?
I agree with the guy in the mustard sweater, I wish they made the pro in red😳😍
Cool ads. Makes you look super credible. 👍
Dararit Chao - you like having to turn the ECT off every time you get in to make it feel like a truck and not a Prius?
@@MotoGPfan3987 Having driven a Semi Truck since 1998 for a living, one get used to do things the old way. I guess it's like wiping your anus after you take a dump every time. I owned a Lexus LX470 and a Lexus Hybrid currently. The Lexus Hybrid has no problem pulling my 21ft Lund boat.
5’6” best truck for me
Hey dudes! I watch you guys from Chicago. Love y’all and keep up the great work! 👍🏽
Im 6' and I have plenty of head room in my 2015 Tacoma, and the 4.0 with the 5 speed auto is the perfect combo for that truck. Shifts nicely with plenty of torque. Also I put 90k on it so far with zero issues. I haven't even had to change the brake pads yet.
