Getting ready to buy one myself, also didn't realize it the new one wouldn't have the V6. So my 17-22, which ever year I get is with me for the next 20 years.
Got mine about 4 months ago. I got it for the engine and being a last model year. My last truck I drove for 18 years and hoping to top that with this truck. That truck didn't even die on me - I had a couple of kids and single cab isn't as convient for a family of 4.
A lot of the modern car features I can appreciate and understand why they changed but many changes like electric parking brake, electric lift gate, panoramic roof, big rims and low profile tires and many others. They keep trying to fix things that are not broken making the vehicle much more complicated and much much more expensive to maintain and repair!
Real Alpha Males don’t need electric/automatic lift gates. They don’t need step sides. Just Hop on. Alpha males don’t need Panoramic roofs. They just lay in the truck bed and stare at the sky at night.
@@Flintlocin You are right on bro, The key worked just fine for 100 years but now we have to add another electrical circuit and potential problem for a problem that didn’t exist. Ridiculous!
One of the most versatile mid sized trucks ever built. Reliable, well made, easy to maintain, lots of aftermarket parts, really by 2023 it’s a rolling work of art…
In 2015 my dad bought a new tacoma. Since then we have gone back and forth with trash talk (mostly joking) about his little truck and how much of a sled it is. Since 2015 I have owned 1 gm, 2 ram and 1 ford full size pickup.. my dads tacoma has 95,000mi and never seen a check engine light. The joke is on me.
My buddy bought an 06 Tacoma SR5 4WD new. Still owns it & has never done any repairs. 315k miles & changed spark plugs at 200k. Zero issues. My 05 Xterra…nightmare
170k on my 16, timing cover developed a leak at 80k haven't had it repaired yet but I definitely have the transmission hunting issue but I mostly see it at low speeds.
Just bought a 19 with 130k it drives like new and literally looks new, you could eat off the under carriage it’s so clean! I assume it was garage kept but the person before me drove it a lot obviously but she’s just getting broke in, sold my 08 with 312k on it ti buy this one.
Thank you because I was thinking bout selling my ‘17 off road thinking because it has 50’000 miles that maybe it’s too many miles to start building it but I hear this often “Toyotas are just breaking in at 100,000 miles”
I purchased a 23 off-road premium with 10,000 miles with factory warranty a year ago for 45 k. Very happy, but I think it needs more shock damping for the road.
This man reminds me all the time when my uncle would just sit us in front of his truck and tell us about them and what’s different, years later I’m a mechanic. Keep up the awesome videos.
@@loveydovey4u I really miss mine. Was totaled in 2018. At the time Tacoma had many mechanical issues so I went with the 2018 tundra xp. Awesome truck.
Your videos are a blessing for people who just want the truth. I bought my 2023 taco this year, and I will be a patron of your videos for years to come. Thanks for doing what you do🤙🏼
I went out and bought a 2022 SR utility package (no rear seats) 4 cylinder precisely because I wanted to get a taco before they changed it. I wanted simplicity and reliability above all else. I got 2022 because at that time we weren’t sure if the 2023 was going to be 4th gen. Either way I’m sure the 2023 is more expensive given inflation so I’m happy I bought sooner than later. I switched from a 2000 impala so to me the 3rd gen is like a spaceship compared to the tech I was used to. If you care about reliability get a new 3rd gen while you still can. Only time will tell if the 4th gen is going to be good.
3rd Gen is bulletproof. Most horror stories you hear about different models come from the first year of a model change. Also, turbos last about 100k miles and then need replaced at a cost of around $2500 so I will stick to my bulletproof V6
@@Ivan-bj3rv I have seen some blow at 30,000 so what is your point? I never said ALL turbos, but if ask most mechanics, they will tell you folks dont take care of them and they last around 100k miles. You are free to post a question to Scotty Kilmore and see what he says.
I bought my 2014 Tacoma used with 27k miles. It now has 150k miles and I haven’t had a single issue. Change oil every 5k miles, air filter, check fluids, etc. normal maintenance.
I bought my 2014 new, now has 105K miles, no issues, gets serviced every 5K miles. Waiting to see if the 2024 is better or worse? Wish the 4.0 had a little more power/torque. Like the looks of the new Nissan frontier, and the engine/trans. power output, but seen pics of undercarriage rust starting before 1st oil change.
I have had three Tacomas. 2005, 2019, and now a 2023. All have had the 2.7L 4 cylinder. I love them. I only pull a very small trailer occasionally so I don't have a problem with the lack of power. Even with a topper and a bed full of tools, I get 24 MPG. I guess since they are changing everything, I'll have to keep this one until I die.
@@ELTACHY1 I drive a lot for work and I'd rather get the better gas mileage. I put 320K on my first Tacoma with only minor repairs that I did myself. I figured I'd stick with what works. Also living in South Florida, there are no hills or mountains so I don't really need the V6.
Solar Orange is definitely a nice color, but it's too bright for me. Sadly they only offered that in the TRD Pro; which has crazy high markups. I opted for the Electric Lime Metallic TRD OR. This is the first time I've ever bought a car that wasn't grey lol, so it's gonna be a different feel.
This one’s better looking than new 2024 model. And you got the point a lot of people prefer simpler ones. I have 2003 model 4 cylinder Basic, manual transmission, hand crank window, just because it’s simpler. Maybe 20 or 30 years later if I need to buy new I am hoping Toyota still offers manual transmission with no touch screen, no gadgets basic model.
This is the most comprehensive, well-informed, and honest reviews of any vehicle I've ever watched. This man very clearly knows his Toyotas. Thank you very much! After watching your video, I want the TRD Off-Road, but in the Solar Octane colour which I think is probably my favourite colour I've ever seen on any vehicle. I might consider wrapping or repainting the TRD Off-Road to match Solar Octane.
I just bought my TRD off-road long bed in Sky Grey Metallic. It’s an awesome 4x4 rig . With a 3.5 adjustable suspension lift and the right tires it’s basically unstoppable! Im not regretting my decision to buy this one bit. I use it every day. I was lucky enough to have bought it from an off road enthusiast. They put around $12,000 into it , then for some reason traded it for a BMW at my local Beamer dealership . Who does that? But I’m glad they did 🎉
I have a 2022 TRD Off Road and I have absolutely love it. Aside from some minor suspension differences it is almost identical to the Pro. I love the simplicity. It just simply works and works well. It is a truck where so many trucks today try so hard to be like a car. Total truck DNA. I plan to have this truck for a long time. Every vehicle has “common problems”. More technology typically means more things to go wrong and more cost to repair or replace. The Tacoma’s common issues are minor and very easy to deal with. Old school is best because it works. Great review. Thanks for reaffirming my decision. Love your videos. I watch every one.
Blistein shocks to Fox, 1.5 inch lift, anodized upper control arms, those aren’t “small” upgrades and let’s not talk about the resale value on the Trd specifically if you got any of the special colors
@@victorolmos3639yeah it’s true it’s not that small the upgrades from TRD OR to the Pro. And that’s not even mentioning the wheels, the tires, the seats and stitching. I got my 23 pro in solar octane just like this one a couple months ago. Flew from Montana to DFW to get it. I notice it’s a pretty exclusive vehicle and it gets looks and comments especially from other Toyota drivers. I added a tonneau cover this past weekend. It’s the only mod I ever intend to do to it.😮
Our 23 TRD OFF ROAD has the Premium pkg, so it has all of the goodies of the PRO and we opted for the 6’ bed. The front camera is awesome both on and off road
This old school feel is exactly why I just purchased a 2023 TRD Off Road model. I don’t want s bunch of fancy gizmos. Didn’t know about the service bulletin for an auxiliary fan. I live in the Central Valley of California. It’s not uncommon to have multiple days where it’s over 100 degrees
Great review. I’ve been scratching my head about the ‘charm’ of a Tacoma and why it’s so popular. You’ve made it super clear and now I can appreciate this truck for what it represents.
A 2023 TRD Pro especially with the rarer 6spd manual transmission is now complete unobtanium brand new. There is over a year waiting list North America wide for this exclusive model in very low production numbers that is being discontinued next year. This particular year and trim will likely never lose its msrp value as it could be the most desirable Tacoma ever with all the new models being hybrids, turbos, EVs or auto only. Congrats to anybody who waited in line for over a year for one of the few unicorns.
My view. Buy 2019 - 2022 now, or wait 3 - 4 years for a new one. It took the consumer and Toyota 3 years to sort out the current generation of Tacoma. Don't expect a shorter time frame to fix problems on a more complicated engine. Good review - am in the market for a 'new or recently used' truck now. This information helps.
I bought a 2016 brand new and the only two repairs I have had to make outside of normal maintenance was the leaking 3rd brake light gasket and my rear seat fold down release broke. My only real complaint is the gas mileage is terrible compared to what you can get in a modern full size.
Your walk around presentation is outstanding! I just hit my first 1,000 miles with my 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro in Solar Octane, this exact truck. It's my first Toyota truck, though I've owned a Lexus and my son is on his second Camry. I did not expect this to be such a pleasure to drive on the highway - I was wrong. This truck exceeds my on-road expectations by a mile.
I have a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport with the 6-Speed Manual and it's perfect for me. It was maybe 3-4 years old, single owner when I bought it, and currently has about 90,000 miles on the odo. No rust. Super simple. Fewer things to break.
Have a 2015 Taco TRD Pro.. I’ve have absolutely zero issues with it. All I do is tires, oil and brakes and go!! It’s truly a monster truck..so reliable!!
Great review! You outline the very reason I bought a new Tacoma in 2021. So far, it's been great and I love it. Rugged, simple, old-school, reliable, a truck's truck.
My '21 tacoma so far has been amazing. I've racked up 35,000 miles and I've had no issues. I love this truck Edit: at 60k now. My answer remains the same!
As a young adult I always wanted a Toyota truck. After 3 Corollas and a 1st gen RAV4, and a 2006 Ford Ranger 4.0 liter V6 4x4:I bought a 2021 Tacoma Off Road 4x4 with the 2-inch Toyota lift kit. I think it has been my second favorite vehicle. My 2000 RAV4 was my favorite, but was a target for accidents since I was the victim of three of them and sadly the last one in 2012 finally totaled it out. Keep up the great Toyota coverage.
Bought a 2020 SR5 4x4 2 years ago, mainly because of the introduction that year of electronic seat adjustment and the bigger screen, glad I did got it 5k miles, runs great
The cruise control stock is what we miss the most on our newer Toyotas. The stock was so intuitive and you never had to look at it once you used it for a week. On my ‘21 rav4 trail, I still have to glance at it when making adjustments or turning on/off… miss the stock. The simplistic design was under rated!
Yup. That design should have a fan club of its own. Damn shame it's going extinct. I don't suppose it or that manual hand brake will survive the redesign.
Got a deposit down on a '23 TRD Off Road, picking it up in a couple months after it's built. I loved the look of the 3rd gen, and I hesitate to buy the first model of a new gen, especially with it being a completely new engine platform + turbos. I'll stick to the old school reliability of the old V6 and the last "old school" Tacoma. Can't wait to pick it up!
They make a supercharger for the 3rd gen anyways, so who cares about the 4 banger turbo lol. It's an ugly truck imo, too boxy and techy for me. 3rd gen for me. It also looks like a Tundra, so why not just get a Tundra lol. Waiting on my '23 TRD OR as well btw.
I have a 22 sr tacoma double cab v6. I'm thinking about trading the 22 in, and doing what you did and ordering a 23 trd off-road. I want the manual. I love the sr and its simplicity. It does feel old school, and despite what some people say, the v6 will last a long time because its internals are well made.
Long story, longer. My local Toyota dealer told me that they have 3, 2023 TRD Off Road V6, 4x4, 6 spd manual transmission, double cabs in stock. So I grabbed one of them, this was in June 2023. I love my truck, very happy!😊
88 Yugo? Really? I remember a dealership or maybe a manufacturer offered if you buy a car, you get a yugo for free. Couldn’t remember if it was Cadillac or who offered that back then.
Got a new SR5. Main attractions for me were - key ignition - manual parking brake - naturally aspirated v6 engine, no turbo 4 banger - no technology package or extra stuff to break - last model year reliability - looks good imo Wanted leather, so I bought some clazzio seat covers and that's it. I love it. I think it's got the new stuff where I want it (nice screen and bluetooth to play music without aux cable), but is otherwise basic, as a truck should be..
@@LateNightYinzer 😂🤣😂.... Hmm ... let's see ... righty- tighty ... lefty- loosesy .... got it ! The reason I asked , is because I bought a 22 SR 2wd 2.7 in May of last year as a stop gap , when the frame of my 2002 Tundra's frame was done . It caught me so off guard and needing a vehicle , NOW!. And with used being within 3-4 K of New , and the 2wd being the only Taco on the lot . I bought it . I thought the salesman told me the base SR was the only Taco that came with a key , and . The BS " engine shut-off " was coming on all 2023 Taco's ?! I assume your SR5 has the " hold in " the CRUISE button , to select standard cruise control , as does my SR ?Thanks for the replay and the information about how yours " turns off " ... gubs
2021 TRD SPORT4X4 owner here and I’ll never let it go. I’ve seen co workers and neighbors trade they’re tacomas during the shortage and bought different brands but I stayed loyal. Exactly what I heard in the video, “you buy it for the long run” and I love it.
I could never afford a tacoma but wanted one, I worked at a Toyota dealer and watched the first gen prices rise then the 3rd gen came out. It was love at first site. Then I saw my first Cavalry blue and knew that was the one. I bought one and plan on keeping it for the long haul
@@Tactical_Pterodactyl_Knives Yup, it’s crazy it’s almost like a relationship. That’s like owning a Tacoma. Once I had it one group giving bad remarks, the other wants to buy it from you. But nope, not about the money it’s all about the longevity.
Greetings , I am an owner of a 2018 Highlander and 2021 Tacoma, thank you so much !! You have saved me hundreds of dollars!! This is the best channel for Toyota owners.
I have a 2019 Sport V6 4 by 4. And not one single problem. I do do the oil changes every 5K and all the maintenance on time. And it's always been garaged since I bought it new it's been a great truck.
I've got over 160,000 miles on my 2017. Still on original rear brakes. They still have plenty of life yet. I have replaced the pads on the front once at 100,000 miles.
I was about to buy a Tacoma before they change it but ended up going with a 4runner. I appreciate how they keep it old school and hope the new versions don't change that feeling
I had a 2021 tacoma trd offroad. Needed more space for my family. Looked at the 4runner but the V6 is just as gutless as the tacoma. So went with the GX460.
My 2020 4Runner has not been bullet proof. A number if ticky tacky mechanical issues with it and our last two Camry's both had issues so that's why we just bought a Hyundai Tucson over the Rav4. Toyota has fallen to 7th in 2023 JD Powers reliability report. They are resting on their reputation and not working to maintain it.
I've had both 2017 & 2020 TRD OFF ROAD trucks & I have had absolutely no problems of any kind & the AC works perfect even in the Phoenix Valley area. My trucks have been bullet proof & reliable more than expected. I love them because they are Toyotas.
Bought my 2023 TRD Off Road two months ago as soon as I found the color I was looking for. I am betting on it outlasting the all 4th gen models and the fixes and refreshes that will come. It will be a collectors item once the last one is sold. Probably already is.
My 1990 Toy P/U had drums on the rear. 211,000 miles and 24 year later I sold it never having had to replace the rear break shoes or have the drums turned. (Also, the original clutch!)
I have a 2021 Taco trd pro and its one of the best trucks ever made. Great as a daily driver and utility vehicle. I highly recommend getting one before they go to a turbo engine. This truck is bullet proof.
I was in the market recently for a mid size truck. I looked at the Ranger XL 2.4L, 4 cylinder 2X4 at about $38K...Then the Tacoma 3.5 V6 4X4 TRD Off Road with many more amenities at $41K It was a no brainer, I went with the Tacoma
All of the things that you mentioned in this video are exactly why I bought a 2023 4x4 instead of waiting for the new 2024 model. Moreover, the fact that Toyota went to a 4 cylinder turbo was it for me. I keep my vehicles long-term, and turbo engines just don't last as long.
False, the old turbo Volvos lasted 500+k miles, most commercial vehicles used for industrial use are turbo charged and last forever. It depends on the engine
Old is not always bad. As most know with new revisions of the Tacoma and 4Runner will have its reliable downside until the bugs are fixed. That’ll be after two years or so. I for one like it simple. Tried and true. That’s why I purchased my 4Runner last year before the new change.
I just traded in a Subaru Outback wilderness for a 23 trd off road earlier in the week and I love how simple and old school this truck is. Not a lot of tech like the Subaru but everything just works like it should. I never realized the drum brakes when I was walking around it.
I had a 22 OB wilderness also, hit a deer last month and did $27.5k in damage, it was decent, pulled a 18’ fiberglass camper(#3200lbs) thru the Rockies last fall. A few issues with it, windshield after 2 weeks, CVT code at 34k, oil pan leak, 2 rear bumper covers due to botched hitch install, and a/c quit in Sept. ($299 to diagnose)🤣. I searched for a month for a deal on a used Lunar Rock, Cement, or Cavalry blue Off Road or Pro. Ended up buying a new lunar premium Off road due to prices and interest.
When he said this engine has nothing I started listening closer. I like new tech but not in my engines. Give me naturally aspirated no gadgets change oil and keep running. Good looking truck. Thank you for the review.
I put a deposit down a couple of months ago on a TRD Sport with manual trans. Have been waiting for it to arrive at the dealer. One of the biggest complaints I have about modern cars is all the high tech stuff and computers that make them very expensive to repair when they break down. These are things that I can live without. After watching this and other similar TCCN videos, I am so glad. AMD, you are the Man. I've been binge watching your videos since last night.😊
This is a great video. After watching this I feel lucky, I have a 2016 Tacoma that I actually took delivery of in 2015, so it was one of the first. Until recently I had Zero issues with it. Then I got the dreaded timing chain cover leak. No other issues. Thanks for this video.
Your videos helped my decide on a 22 trd pro with the 6 speed standard and I absolutely love it. Had almost a year now and I hope I never have to sell it
I own my first Toyota now. A 2011 Tacoma with 70 k on it. Before my father in law passed away he gave it to me. What a blessing. It has the 4.0 and looks brand new. He kept it garaged all the time. I wish we could have him back and he was driving it again though. We know where he is now.
Both are hella good, more hp with the 3.5 but more tq with the 4.0... reliable both I'm sure are very good. I have the manual transmission TRD off-road version
You are on point with the driveline vibrations. Anything you do you get random vibrations at different speeds. No matter how well you get your tires balanced or whatever
Long-time Yota owner here. Went w a Honda Ridgeline. Spacious, comfortable, no trans hunting. Most folks don’t go off-road so boils down to want vs. need,…or image? Love the RL ride.
As always, Toyota trucks are tried and true trucks. They are the most reliable trucks in the world. I’ve owned a Tacoma, a 2003. I sold it and bought a 2007 Toyota Tundra with the tried and true 5.7 V8. I needed it to pull our camper. Keep your videos coming. 😁👍
Thank you for the great review. As you approach one year in operation, it would be great to get your thoughts. What worked? What surprised you? What you might do different? Have you missed working at a Toyota dealer? And what's new for year two? Thank you for all that you do!
I just wrote a detailed review comment here of 2 , 2023 Tacomas I’ve each owned to 10k miles. An Off-road Premium auto, and a TRD Pro manual. Go check out my comparative feedback between them. Very different beasts.
I'm 53 and the 23' Sport I ordered 7mo ago arrived today. Only new vehicle I'll ever buy and hopefully the last vehicle ill ever buy. Nice video..thanks
The craziest thing is that I bought a 2016 TRD OF in 2016 for $35K, now they want $15K more to get minor upgrades... I sold it with 115K miles last Nov and never had issues with it. Didn't even change the brakes on it. It was truly an amazing truck.
I paid 34k for a base model TRD OR 2020. I got lucky because right after that dealer markups hit and now for that same configuration for a 2023 it's 39k MSRP.
AMD, I am glad we got our 1GR-FE 4.0 V6, made in California, USA Tacoma when we did. 😁 Some day I would like to add a manual Tacoma with the 2.7 2TR-FE engine to the family collection 🤩
Excellent point he makes about the early iterations of Toyota engines... My 2007 3.5 V6 has had numerous leaking issues, and it just seized after the water pump blew out at 103k miles... despite regular maintenance... I have a newer version (2013) of the same engine in our other car with no problems at all
@@flavellinator The water pump on the 2grfe was an old 90s water pump and plague the 3.5 motors. Most owners had issues between 60k to 120k. The first sign is leaking and the other is free spinning of the pump in which no longer pumps coolant efficiently. If you make it to 100k it's a recommended replacement for peace of mind and long road trips.
Haha, I just bought a new ‘23 4Runner and felt pretty good about it, now I feel like I need to get a ‘23 Tacoma too. You’re speaking about me exactly when you talk about the type of person interested in these old school trucks. I despise all the gadgets and screens in the new models!!
Great review. It’s like this video was made for me. I purchased a few months ago my own 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro in solar octane in a manual transmission. I just love driving it. Everything you mentioned about the Pro is right on, by the way it drives on road and all of its features. I got the 2023 because of what you said about the 4 runner engine being so reliable with all the updates and improvements. It’s that way with the 2GR FKS V6 in the Tacoma, all the little issues have been addressed and should be very reliable. To take a saying from you, owning a 2023 TRD Pro is great and life is good. Thanks
According to my dealer, my 2023 Access Cab 6' bed manual transmission TRD Sport should be arriving in the next two weeks. What are your thoughts on the clutch? I have a feeling I might hate the accumulator thingy. The only other Toyota manuals I've had as daily drivers were an '85 Celica and an '00 Solara, and if the Tacoma's clutch is like those I'll be fine. I wish I'd had a chance to drive one, but they're rare as hen's teeth around here.
I love my 2019 access cab TRD offRoad 6 speed three pedal. It took almost 80k km for the chunky mess to come out of the transmission but it broke in eventually and shifts smooth.
I have the 2019 sport extended cab or whatever it is called , also the 3 pedal version. Only 11G miles. I love it. Was just wondering what the “chunky mess” thing was? Mine shifts flawlessly.
This Toyota is a great truck. I opted for the Nissan Frontier Pro 4x because it kept some old school with simplicity, some analog clusters but does also have a lot of modern features.
I think that clean up cycle is excellent! Wish my 2006 lexus is 250 standard drive had that! It had a known carbon buldup issue. I found top tier fuel, synthetic oil change every 5k, and a fuel treatment every now and then kept it fairly clean. I love how Toyota and Lexus keep using what works. I just got a 2018 lexus ea350 and I also have a 2006 lexus is 250 and I can see some similarities between the two! Like some things from 06 were still being used in 2018 but with improvement or enhancement over the years perhaps. I will say both are the base model and the audio is far superior in the base model 06 Lexus is 250! It literally has an amplifier in the trunk you can see. Not the Mark Levinson upgrade but the base model.
I got a 2019 trd off road and a 2023 trail édition... didnt want to wait for the 2024 with all the changements...i wait a few years for them to fix the bugs out ..just love those tacomas....
Accidentally ran into your channel, love the honest reviews, and it shows you in it for the love of vehicles and not profit. Change your oil every 5k. People spend more in coffee a month than it would cost for an oil change.
Thank you for this review, it was so refreshing to hear that I made a good decision to purchase a 2023 Tacoma TRD off road manual transmission! I haven't ever owned a Toyota or an automatic so when I heard that this was going to be the last year they would be making them with manual transmissions I started searching and I was one of the lucky ones that now owns one of these gems! I undercoated it before I drove it and plan on keeping it as long as I live! So sad to see the end of manuals, trucks aren't trucks anymore.
Did you do the undercoating yourself? What product did you use? I also just bought a Tacoma and I was thinking maybe I should plan on using Fluid Film or something similar every winter.
I have a 21 off-road manual as well, I had to look high and low to find one, I will prob keep it for a long time. When I was looking I was told that only 5% of Tacomas are built with a manual.
Thank you for addressing the transmission programming. I bought a 2016 and sold it in two years because it was so bad driving on the freeway, with the truck just hunting gears between 4 and 6.
The 2023 auto transmission isn’t really any better. It still shifts constantly and won’t hold gears. It’s in a race to get to 6th gear and lug the engine. And any hint of an incline, particularly at highway speed (65 MPH +) results in the trans dropping from 6th to 5th. And if it is a long incline with even the slightest increasing grade, you’ll be in 4th with the engine revving over 3K RPMs until you are well over the crest. But it won’t shift back into 5th, then 6th when you reach flat ground or go down the incline. Mine hangs in 4th gear in these situations for up to 10 seconds and it is really annoying. I’ll be doing an Overland Torque tune ASAP to get rid of the terrible shifting. And it’s worse when using cruise control. I didn’t notice it during my test drive because I didn’t get much over 65 MPH and the area was relatively flat. I can’t imagine driving it in hilly or mountain areas. Although many people don’t report anything like this so it seems to be a truck to truck issue. Still a great truck overall. But the engine and transmission tuning is terrible if you do any highway driving.
I think I spent $600 on orange virus tune, and still wasn't happy with it. The gears were just too tall. I wouldn't have been happy without regearing. I was having issues with seat comfort as well, so I sold it instead of regearing.
Great video...I have a 2023 TRD off road and I love it ..I put 39k miles on it and it's awesome to drive and family trips ..I highly recommend it who wants a real truck feel and drives smooth..thanks
I have a 2016, only tbe Brake Master Cylinder has failed, my first issue with any of my Toyotas for over 35-years of ownership!!! It was actually fun to have my first car problem!!!
Thank you! I sort of made this same video. The last year of any Toyota model is usually the “BEST” year! Listen to what he just said, the first years are usually always rot with issues. So if you want reliability, old school truck. NOW is your last chance. Great video as always!
Man I bought this Truck 2 weeks ago and didn't know this was the last gen with the V6. Gonna keep this truck forever
Getting ready to buy one myself, also didn't realize it the new one wouldn't have the V6. So my 17-22, which ever year I get is with me for the next 20 years.
I just got a 23 pro and love it
Got mine about 4 months ago. I got it for the engine and being a last model year. My last truck I drove for 18 years and hoping to top that with this truck. That truck didn't even die on me - I had a couple of kids and single cab isn't as convient for a family of 4.
Gen before had the best v6.
Congrats on your new Tacoma .

To force you to take it into the dealer and cut costs on things that are better left alone.
Real Alpha Males don’t need electric/automatic lift gates. They don’t need step sides. Just Hop on. Alpha males don’t need Panoramic roofs. They just lay in the truck bed and stare at the sky at night.
I got a 2019 TRD OR and I hate the push start wish I could just use a key

Good thing your dad did not buy the 2016 that was the worst.
My buddy bought an 06 Tacoma SR5 4WD new. Still owns it & has never done any repairs. 315k miles & changed spark plugs at 200k. Zero issues. My 05 Xterra…nightmare
I got the 2020 v6 SR5 6' bed exelen 38k I had 08 tundra for 12 years only change the battery in 10 years I steel have the sparkplug and belt.
My 2016 has 118K and as of now (knock on wood) still gives me zero problems. I love Yotas
118k is not a lot of miles for any truck.
What is knoxk on wood?you mean thanks god?
Just bought a one year old 2023 Tacoma TRD off road, 16,000 miles on it. Love it so far.
What did you end up paying for it? I’m looking for one similar
@aaronst91 $42K, which was way too high for a used truck. But that's what they are selling for.
I found a 22 with 21k miles for $39k! I’m up in Alaska also! Pretty good truck I’d say! It books for $45k so I thought $39k was a prettty good deal!
I just bought a 2021 with 26,000 miles. $43k. Overpriced I know but it is loaded and exactly the configuration I wanted.

@MultipleDigits Of course it was the best because you owned one. Everything you own is the best.
Yup way more grunt
Except you can’t buy a new one...
Your videos are a blessing for people who just want the truth. I bought my 2023 taco this year, and I will be a patron of your videos for years to come. Thanks for doing what you do🤙🏼
What trim level?
Just copped my Taco Pro. 2023 Metallic gray. LOVE IT! I’m happy I can finally say this in the comments 😊
Mine is Super White, its devastatingly handsome!
I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD off road. I've had no problems so far but I only have 39k miles. Love the truck and plan to keep it forever.
Hey! Same here mines a manual with 50,000
I'm so glad I got the current version of the Taco and absolutely love it. Don't care if it isn't "stylish" or hip, it's perfect for me.
to my eyes its still the best looking mid size truck out there.
@@shnerp my wife says the same thing. I agree. It's not even close really. Tacoma is like a 9 or 10/10, other midsizers are like 5-6/10

I love my 2018 Tacoma with the 3.5 six automatic.
Love my 18 Tacoma. 322k on the clock & she’s been bombproof thus far!
I only have 37,000 miles on my 2019, and the body ECU unit has already been replaced for $1200.00.
You must be driving the truck 24/7. Do you have time to sleep?
Check my channel I put a review up on it.
322k 😂 show us a picture of the dash
Love your vid. I think you’re up to 360k now. Looking forward to see how far this truck will go.
3rd Gen is bulletproof. Most horror stories you hear about different models come from the first year of a model change. Also, turbos last about 100k miles and then need replaced at a cost of around $2500 so I will stick to my bulletproof V6
Do they? Only 100k? I guess my Volvo didn't get the memo. It's 16 years old with 233k on the original turbo.
I have a 2011 ford eco boost with 240k miles that disagrees.
@@Ivan-bj3rv I have seen some blow at 30,000 so what is your point? I never said ALL turbos, but if ask most mechanics, they will tell you folks dont take care of them and they last around 100k miles. You are free to post a question to Scotty Kilmore and see what he says.

Just bought the last 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road at the dealer. Love the reliability and respect of this winner.
Why did you never opt for the v6?
@@ELTACHY1 I drive a lot for work and I'd rather get the better gas mileage. I put 320K on my first Tacoma with only minor repairs that I did myself. I figured I'd stick with what works. Also living in South Florida, there are no hills or mountains so I don't really need the V6.
@@SuperUncleRyan nice that makes sense. thanks for the insight.
Have you seen the 2008 4 cylinder Tacoma in North Carolina with over 1.5 million miles?
@this old trailer how does your tacomas do on the interstate at like 80? Can they hold there own or do they struggle? Looking at a 2012 2.7 auto..
I think this is probably the nicest looking tacoma ever made. The solar whatever exclusive color is just so slick
I have 2003 model 4 cylinder
Basic, manual transmission, hand crank window, just because it’s simpler.
Oh you are so very right. I have the 22 Also and went from the idiotic spacecraft big trucks to this Taco. Adding a few mods but nothing drastic.

Just bought a new sr double cab v6 4x4 2023 got December 15 first new truck I have ever bought
Yeap, never be an unpaid beta tester.

Congrats. That color really pops.
Its a good idea to change the engine oil at the first 1600km to get rid of metal shaves from engine manufacturing and break-in
The TRD Pro fox suspension sucks up large bumps offroad at high speed smoothly like a baja racer.
I went from Eco boost to taco then back to eco boost. My taco just felt boring and clunky on and off road.
I have a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport with the 6-Speed Manual and it's perfect for me. It was maybe 3-4 years old, single owner when I bought it, and currently has about 90,000 miles on the odo. No rust. Super simple. Fewer things to break.

Got a deposit down on a '23 TRD Off Road, picking it up in a couple months after it's built. I was about to buy a Tacoma before they change it but ended up going with a 4runner. I appreciate how they keep it old school and hope the new versions don't change that feeling
Unless you really need the truck bed, the 4Runner is a much better option for the same money.

I have a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-road with the TRD lift kit. Love it!👍🏻🇺🇸
The simplicity of the Tacoma along with the reliability of the 1GR-FE is why I bought a 2nd gen.
I have a 2017 Tacoma Limited. Love it! I don’t know what he’s talking about as far as vibration due to leaf springs. I have no vibration?
I just got a 2023 SR 4×4. Very simple truck .simplicity=longevity.I put 4runner bronze heritage wheels and ko2s really nice truck. Very happy
Long-time Yota owner here. Went w a Honda Ridgeline. Spacious, comfortable, no trans hunting. Most folks don’t go off-road so boils down to want vs. need,…or image? Love the RL ride.
In the first 4 minutes you explained a "dieseling" sound I have worried about for 5 years! Thank you. You videos have been most helpful.
I have a 2018 Tacoma TRDOFF road. It drives great, it rides great, not a problem at all. I’ll keep it for ever!
Inflation
So, the first year of the current model had no issue?
@@chrisx5127 mine was built late May 2016, had no issues, only replaced the battery twice and 2 sets of tires and that was more for want than need.
AMD, I am glad we got our 1GR-FE 4.0 V6, made in California, USA Tacoma when we did. 😁 Some day I would like to add a manual Tacoma with the 2.7 2TR-FE engine
to the family collection 🤩
I wish they still offered a New Taco manual 2.7 !
Excellent point he makes about the early iterations of Toyota engines... My 2007 3.5 V6 has had numerous leaking issues, and it just seized after the water pump blew out at 103k miles... despite regular maintenance... I have a newer version (2013) of the same engine in our other car with no problems at all
The 2007 V6 was the 4.0L. The 3.5 didn’t come out until the 3rd gen in 2016
@@levikender4820 2007 Lexus Rx350... I should've mentioned that... 2013 is a Venza...
Seized from a water pump? Isn't the water pump on a belt? Not doubting you, I just don't see how that would happen as long as oil is flowing.
@@davidquinn9676 unfortunately it lost all its water, overheated, and stalled out... "Seize" was not the best word to use there... mb
I live in Puerto Rico and I have my truck for almost 2 years. I haven't had a problem with the A/C unit and hope not to. I love your reviews.

Haha! 🤣
Can you explain to us, what you saying about the trans?
This Toyota is a great truck. I opted for the Nissan Frontier Pro 4x because it kept some old school with simplicity, some analog clusters but does also have a lot of modern features.
New Frontier has just enough tech to be current, but not annoying.
@@user-eq1kg6bd4z I think so too. Here s my Frontier. ua-cam.com/video/oKxyxEJNk5w/v-deo.html
22-23 years ago, I might have considered a Nissan but ever since Renault bought Nissan, their reliability took a nosedive. It’s a shame really
I remember when people used to bring a thermos full of coffee to work. Now they spend 100 bucks a week at coffee shops without even thinking about it.
@@josephstarnes8747 I use fluid film or woolwax, and I do it in the spring and the fall.
@@darrenadams6861 you know the correct way to do it. Manual truck and fluid film undercoat. That truck will last longer than you good stuff.

I got mine tuned for $300. It added 29 horsepower and 28 lb ft of torque on just 87 octane. Shifts buttery smooth now!
I think I spent $600 on orange virus tune, and still wasn't happy with it. The gears were just too tall. I wouldn't have been happy without regearing. I was having issues with seat comfort as well, so I sold it instead of regearing.
2016s we’re garbage 🗑️
