James Hetfield is one of the greatest guitar players to ever grace this planet. So effortless, never any mistakes, no need to look, it’s all coming from the heart. We as a human race are incredibly lucky.
Not many would share my opinion on this but I could give a shit less. Orion is my all time favorite Metallica song. Not to mention its on my all time favorite record of theirs. This was awesome. But I wish I could time travel back to when Cliff was alive and see that shit live. The feeling I had after I lost my cherry is very similar to the feeling I had the first time I heard this song. More specifically the first time I heard that beautiful bass solo. Fucking awesome. We were all very much cheated from an exceptional talent when Cliff died. RIP Cliff. Much love.
It really cracks me up how everyone rags on Lars drumming...yeah, technically hes not the best...but he has incredible drive and energy and I could not imagine Metallica without him...Quadruple paradiddles are nice and all that...but give me a guy who puts every ounce of his being into the music 100% and youve got a killer drummer...I think he kicks ass...!!
It's not about paradiddles or technical shit. It's about GROOVE for a beat/song like Orion. Just listen to the original track and then listen to Lars' drums here. I don't normally bag on Lars, but it's almost unlistenable. There is no groove whatsoever. It sounds like every measure is a different tempo, and then on top of it he's adding all sorts of unnecessary fills. This is the worst I've ever heard him sound.
I was at this gig. We were all getting the hint from Lars playing and James's singling out of Rob but when Rob played that first note, we all went insane, the sound in this clip doesn't quite capture it.
