This song reminds me of my dad, who committed suicide when I was 20, he was a war vet and Metallica was his fav band. I only play it twice a year, on his birthday and on a day he decided to end his life. Happy Birthday Dad.

Life, it seems, will fade away
    Drifting further, every day
    Getting lost within myself
    Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
    Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
I need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
    Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss, this can't be real
I cannot stand this hell I feel
    Emptiness is filling me
    To the point of agony
    Growing darkness, taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
    No one but me
    Can save myself
    But it's too late
    Now I can't think
Think why I should even try
    Yesterday seems as though
    It never existed
    Death greets me warm

This is probably the best Metallica song for two reasons:
    1. The sexiness of the harmony/melody connection

Hetfield also explained that he and Lars were obsessed with death while making the album. So yes, the song is about suicide. To me, depression means a lot of things, a lot more than just a feeling.
I've had days where I just feel a little blue or a bit off and felt depressed, and I've had days where it's consumed me, everything I do, say, hear, think and feel and made me feel completely devoid of any semblance of identity or humanity.
I've been in hospital and seen more people than I can remember and I've tried 4 or 5 different medications.
Depression is one of those things in life you can't fully put into words, you can try and read about it and listen to people talk about it, but until it gets in your head for whatever reason, you can't fully understand what it's like or even what it is.
And if you are ever trying to understand why someone has taken their life and find you just don't understand, then it seems you either have a lighter dark place, you don't have one at all, or you are yet to find yours.
But please know that regardless of how bad a place someone can be in, even if they take their life, it doesn't mean they don't love their family and friends.
      Hope this helps.

Best thing .... my son wouldn't touch my guitars then. Till I got sick, heart attacks.
Now I play guitar and sing songs at a nearby church, begging for my foods and heart medicines. Im trying to learn this piece. Hope to play this one day. Even if I cut the song to smaller parts to suit my playing.
God bless you man. I know it's a year before, but us Metallers never gets Old.

First concert my kids went to at 14 and 16 was Metallica in San Francisco. Blew their minds. They still blast them 5 years later and talk about it. No one else plays live like them. Ive been to at least 20 other concerts of other bands/groups. No one does it like Tallica!

I lost one of my best friends in life to fucking drugs. We used to play Metallica a lot as a 3 person band. I miss him so much and feel so guilty that I wasnt there when I was needed. And Justice For All was that intro album that brought us together as teens. I love you Jason Worley, Im sorry I wasnt there for you.

The end part was originally played with double bass drum notes between each snare note. That's what takes this song to a different level as it progresses towards the end. Playing the recorded version now to reminisce.

The moment when I first saw and heard Fade to Black on a concert was one of the most emotionally extrange momments of my life. I was 100% happy and 100% sad at the same time. I was drowning in tears but smiling even with my eyes. I've never felt like that before, nor after again in my life.
