6:36 through 6:56 is jaw dropping he threw on the distortion and wah and did the solo verbatim on bass with kirk. I never realized that was cliff back in the day harmonizing on that part. I am now convinced Cliff was some celestial being that showed up to make fun of a Kirk Hammet solo.
But if they want it louder, then they're probably looking for an isolated track. You can't have an instrument way too loud, otherwise it would never gel with the rest of the band. My mix brings the bass to the lead spectrum, which is usually filled with guitars, or drums or vocals, depending on which band we're talking about. Very rarely with basses, though. The only bands I can think of that feature basses in metal/rock that are also leading are Iron Maiden, Rush, Royal Blood (for obvious reasons), RHCP, Primus, The Who, etc... maybe I'm forgetting some bands, but it's very hard to find bass-laden ones.

I know how excited I was meet James but Cliff was the coolest one in the room by far! Sat there not saying much at first but we ended up having a really good conversation about loads of random bands. At least he’s up there and Lemmy is keeping him company till we all get there!! 🤘
That's why I love distortion bass. You can make it stand out without having to overpower it. You just put your clean layer where it should be and then mix the dirty layer at taste.
George Macauley I finger pick a lot when playing guitar and I've played that way for years so bass kind of came naturally, already being very used to playing without a pick. Only thing that bugged me at first was the thick strings but I got used to it quickly. And I only picked up bass at first to learn this song so I was determined lol.
My first song I learned on bass was Fade to Black, and like you, it was because of Cliff's playing. I had taped FTB off the radio and the bass was way up on that particular version (don't know why, just got lucky). I wore out that tape 30 years ago.
Burton was one of the best bassists of his time. When he passed away in that accident, the world lost a great musician. Metallica was not quite the same after he died. I am glad we still have recordings of him that we all can enjoy today.

Those bass lines are so clean, full of rock groove and melodic. A true talented rocker.
Cliff was sent to this world for music. He finished the job and God took him from this shit we call modern civilization.
Cliff made history.

I'm sorry, but no. God didn't take him, I don't believe in God but if there really exists this guy that is super humble and kind and shit, he would NEVER EVER take away a guy like him. He didn't finish his job, he was barely starting. It's like you're saying that he had to die. Fuck you honestly.
God is real, but I don't believe he takes away lives like that. Also why is every atheist so rude geez.
Mozart also died young, so there maybe a connection there.
@@Darek225Army I'm not rude, just saying that you (op) are the asshole for saying that a death was supposed to happen. You just suck.
RIP Cliff Burton. Your unique contribution to music has immortalised you. Thank you!

Me too! I just wish it was mixed a tad bit louder, hehe
Who invented galloping sound?
Mike Mason dont forget iron maiden
WTF, i like reguetón, foos
nateeto I don't know who invented it, but the best performer known for using it is Steve Harris of Iron Maiden.

That's the transformative power of Cliff's performance, I'm so stoked we have reached this milestone! We need to thank Cliff's legacy: his bass art.
First time hearing this version glad I did love this song cliff was just so different from all the bass players

That's a bass solo by cliff..
That's all bass bro all bass
Cliffs masterpiece
6:36 through 6:56 is jaw dropping he threw on the distortion and wah and did the solo verbatim on bass with kirk. I never realized that was cliff back in the day harmonizing on that part.
I am now convinced Cliff was some celestial being that showed up to make fun of a Kirk Hammet solo.
This part of the solo was played only by Cliff
Yep he double tracked and harmonized with himself

Cliff and Harris influenced me to play bass. Metal royalty. Each of them freaking amazing. My biggest influences.
Steve’s flatwounds are the shit. I would definitely recommend a set.
Geddy and Ox Entwistle, please ...there's more, but I am not trying to punish, just educate!! Elevate !!
Cliff is the best. No doubt about it. I'm a bassist too.
Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Bob Daisley and Cliff Burton got me jammin Bass guitar for 40 years +🤘
cliff Burton was to bass as dime bag was to guitar
Trey Hildesheim I fucking agree

So those 4 thumbs down actually wanted Cliff's sound to be reduced in the mix ....you cant quiet the genius of cliffs legacy you misguided fools!
Yeah, totally! Cliff them all!!
Jason Stoutenger No son, just a fact that bass is not a lead instrument.
I'm 48, had all metallica demos and all material. even still have the hit parader issue with cliff interview.
I was skating in the park when my buddy rode up on his dirt bike a.d told me that cliff was dead..
I will never forget..
fuckin tragedy.

@@alextamulis Anthrax. You can hear Frankie in the mix, even on their early albums. It would have been cool if the 3 albums Cliff was on were mixed like Anthrax's, AJFA too.
That part at 4:20 gives me chills
At 5:42 starts the riff that Cliff played for Kirk, for the first time. Kirt says that he was absolutely blown away. Responded to him by saying " i didn't know Bass could be played like that" I saw this on one of there 1000's of hours of back stage interview clips and im reminded by this quote every time i hear this.
this is how all metal albums would've sounded according to their bassists vision
fuckin true hahahah!!
Especially Jason Newstead haha
So true🤘
If it was an early Iron Maiden mix....lol

Me: Yes.
Every time my wife asks me why there aren't lyrics in this song I just tell her because cliffs bass speaks loud enough
@@TheRealTurnedEvil I don't get why people think songs need lyrics to count as music. Some songs would be totally ruined if they had lyrics, Orion especially.
Y la letra????
Yo: see letra jjaajaja
Only Cliff Burton and Chuck Norris know the lyrics to this song.
There are lyrics, if you can listen close enough, you hear the souls of legends crying out in metal.
Without a doubt, this is the best version of this song that I've ever heard... It would be amazing to hear every Metallica song that Cliff played on mixed like this.
Thank you for this!
33 years ago today we lost a legend. Cliff would have loved this. Amazing work, thank you.
I couldn't even count how many times that I have listened to this song. Yet there was SO MUCH going on with the bass that I never realized. Another genius gone before his time. Miss you...

You can the start of the power bass ineavy metal .
I love how you can hear the wood resonating. Great tone.
In my opinion one of the true rock gods! I was very lucky to have met Cliff shortly before his passing in Birmingham backstage at the Odeon on the Master Of Puppets tour in September 86. I know how excited I was meet James but Cliff was the coolest one in the room by far! Sat there not saying much at first but we ended up having a really good conversation about loads of random bands. At least he’s up there and Lemmy is keeping him company till we all get there!! 🤘
absolutely, Oldskoolm! Thank you for your input
It needs to be louder!!!
Do you want a louder bass or a louder mix?
Alex Tamulis Heh, it was a joke :D As you know, bass in songs is never too loud. You made a great mix, thanks, I like listening to it ;)

On those gallops, Cliff used only two fingers.

Cliff understood and fulfilled his role to the fullest ... forever a legend !
i'm a guitarist, and i think that bass should almost always be as loud as the guitars.
sad Too bad this isn't an example of that. The bass overpowers everything
\\DEM-GTR// I think that's the point of the video. Ridiculously loud bass.
David Elford Yeah I'm aware
IN an ideal mix, all instruments should be equally as loud and should be clearly defined
That's why I love distortion bass. You can make it stand out without having to overpower it. You just put your clean layer where it should be and then mix the dirty layer at taste.
Such a masterpiece. As a guitar player first I only picked up a bass too because of cliffs playing. First song I learned on bass was Orion.
A masterpiece indeed!
I really find it difficult to believe that Orion was the first song you learned to play on the bass guitar.
George Macauley was one of the first songs I learned to play also.
My first song I learned on bass was Fade to Black, and like you, it was because of Cliff's playing. I had taped FTB off the radio and the bass was way up on that particular version (don't know why, just got lucky). I wore out that tape 30 years ago.
4:19.......I always take a deeeeep breath and just dive....I feel like I hear a new song!!!
Greedings from Paxos Greece
Burton was one of the best bassists of his time. When he passed away in that accident, the world lost a great musician. Metallica was not quite the same after he died. I am glad we still have recordings of him that we all can enjoy today.
