  • Taking out a Frozen Samsung Ice Maker can be very difficult and you could easily damage or destroy it if not done the right way. If your Samsung Refrigerator has an interface similar to this one, there's a secret Forced Defrost mode that will heat up the Ice Maker cabinet, allowing you to remove it very, very easily.
In this video, we go through all the needed steps to get the ice maker out, as well as how to take it apart if you're facing bigger problems than just needing to take it apart.
You'll learn the following from this video:
    (How to):
    Defrost a Samsung Icemaker
Remove a Samsung Ice Master Icemaker
    Test a Samsung Icemaker
    Tear Down a Samsung Icemaker
How to Fix a Samsung Icemaker (but I am not doing an extensive diagnosis or video on that here - just a few general ideas).

Basic Repair Kit for the Samsung Icemaker (RTV Sealant, Drain Clips, IM Retainer): bens-appliance... - Use Code "UA-cam" for 5% Off
    Replacement Icemakers: bens-appliance...
Remember: If your refrigerator has dirty condenser coils, it could be failing to cool this Samsung refrigerator properly, costing you a lot of money as well as why the ice maker won't automatically operate - consider buying an appliance cleaning kit to prevent your appliance from an early failure. Great video with tons of correct information. It is also important to know that a class action lawsuit was won against Samsung in Florida based on faulty icemakers. If you can not get it to work, Samsung will send out a repair person to replace the ice maker free of charge. Once that has failed twice, you may demand a refund or a replacement of the refrigerator.
    Keep up the great videos!!

In my experience, Samsung is terrible. We had this exact problem, it took six weeks to finally get them to send a tech to our house, which was supposed to be free of charge, and then they claimed that it was my fault because there was “physical damage” to the unit. I ran up as far as I could on the supervisor chain in customer service, and they basically refused to do anything. I will never give them any more money on their appliances.

We have the LG, I'm happy to see that I am able to fix this myself, I am going broke hiring people to do things around the house. I am a new subscriber, your channel (this video) is so valuable. Great news. We purchased out $2700 samsung fridge in 2015. The ice maker has been a constant headache. I heard on a blog that samsung is now offering warranty replacement o your poorly designed ice maker. I called the 1-800-samsung number, gave them my serial number and model numbers and sent some pics. I am scheduled for a complete replacement of the etire icemaker, drawer, mother board and other items all covered under warranty, It is worth a try

My fridge was purchased in 2014 - constant problems with the ice maker and other issues too (like inside fridge temp going up to 65 deg!) Samsung replaced ice maker under warranty - in August 2017. Then in Jan 2018 - frozen ice maker again. Then they not only replaced the icemaker but also a wiring panel in the back of the fridge. Solved the problem. Now April 2024 - ice maker stopped working. I noticed the air flow vent at bottom of unit is hanging down on left side - can't push it back up. Must be water leaked into it and is frozen because I can't push it back up. Drying the defrost cycle.

SUCCESS ! thanks for the help.
my issue was, water works, you can hear the auger spinning but no ice comes out. Have had the fridge for around 2-3 years but never defrosted it. I have tried pulling it out in the past but it always seemed stuck.
Spent a whole Saturday defrosting the ice box and using a hair dryer (on medium mode) to try warm it enough and eventually I saw the dripping water. (GET SOME TOWELS !) then between hair drying and jamming big knives around it for leverage, it eventually popped out.
What a great feeling =) gotta have my ICE !
Then probably a couple more hours chipping away at the ice near the back and sides.
Turned the ice maker back on and BOOM, around 3 hours later, full ice bucket!
One tip that may not be in your video, when you put it back in it wont go all the way unless you flip the WHITE ice stopper (leg) thingy at the chute to the open position then it clicks in place. Do this by turning the metal rod at the back of the ice bucket then hold the white Leg part (by the chute) then it will slide all the way to the back.
Also I -thankfully- didnt have to defrost the top ice maker machine. I was worried about that. After defrosting it, that's all I needed to get ice flowing again. For others, you may need to defrost the actual ice maker at the very top.
Other than this, the fridge has been wonderful. And will check this part of it every year i think to avoid a recurrence.
    Good luck from Canada y'all!
Oh, also, I called them for support and the dude just said, "ya gotta defrost it" so I did !

He was at another customer day before and it was a frozen iceberg and he told owner he needed to unplug it for 48 hours with doors open before he could start repair. Kit had new motherboard, icemaker, heated drain tube, 2 Y clips and rectangular gasket. He also did some minor siliconing. 2 months left on my ESP so hoping for best.

@@brianbaker359 Bad news, Brian. I had that done about 3 years ago (except he didn't change motherboard), and it still freezes up. I bought mine and THEN looked up the reliability rating (I know, stupid, right?). That convinced me to get the extended warranty thru Square Trade for $250 and I didn't regret it since I had them out multiple times. Now the warranty is expired, but I would rather fix it myself every month or two than to go thru the hassle of calling service out.
I can tell when it's starting to freeze up by the loud popping sounds it makes, so I immediately either defrost or open it up and remove the ice dams inside. depending on how bad it is. I'll use it till it craps out then buy ABS (Anything But Samsung).
      Hope you have better luck.

Just as an FYI, I performed the force defrost a few times over a month period and the ice maker would immediately freeze up again. so I called Samsung to see what could be done. They told me my warranty had already expired a few years ago, but I already knew that. I told the rep I was very disappointed and really like the fridge. I’m not sure why, but the rep said because I was a loyal customer ( I have several Samsung appliances) Samsung would send a tech out for FREE and replace the ice maker for FREE. Everyone should check the water pressure to their refrigerator. Recently, my neighborhood pressure was increased dramatically (up to 80 - 90 PSI which is very high). When that happened, my ice maker started freezing up when before I never had this issue. What is happening (I believe) is that when the refrigerator fills the ice trays with water, the water ends up splashing out of the trays because the pressure is too high. This water that splashes out then just freezes and, over time, you get a massive buildup of ice.
So pull out your refrigerator from the wall and turn down the water inlet valve. I restricted mine down to about 20% open. Now, with the valve restricted down, I don't get any splashing when I go to use the door water dispenser which is another plus. Before because of the high water pressure, water would splash out of our drinking cups when we went to get water from the door dispenser.
So far since I have done this, I haven't had any more freeze ups at all whereas before, I was having to defrost the icemaker every two weeks.

Thank you for taking the time to do this video. It fixed my problem. I did find it difficult to get the lower lip of the ice maker back up and secured with the single screw. You cannot have nay front on the cooing coil due the tight tolerances on the lower part where the rubber caps connect with the coil. Just make sure the coil is free of frost. you can run a quick Force Defrost on it and when it is clear and shiny you can secure the bottom of the ice maker without too mush pressure. I do not understand why we were problem free for 2.5 years then we ran into this problem. I think it had to do with the frequency of having the refrigerator door open and introducing higher temperatures + humidity getting into the ice box area. IDK.. Will watch this and maybe report back. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video. Pressing the little tab on the top right, and pushing the ice maker box up as well as giving it a tug and it finally came loose. Especially the front part was clogged totally in ours.

I just had an ice maker repair done (under extended warranty purchase) on a 2016 model. The repair bill was $340 to the insurance company. They replaced the ice maker, an extra part (larger tube), and some 12 connection circuit board that came as a single kit. Oct. 2021.
Took the repair guy an hour to do this, but I'm sure he's done it many times. So a replacement circuit board is now part of the "repair" kit. A few days before this I find my refrig at 45 degrees. I find the common "frozen" coils and upper tube. The refrig screen showed 35 degrees, the refrig was 45 degrees. The sensor was in ice. So 3 1/2 hours later I defrosted the back coils to get the plastic/foam cover off. Can't just pull it off, hair dryer at medium. Also cleaned the defrost tube that was frozen. There seems to be kits (extra heater coils) you can buy and replacement defrost tube de-icers. I'm hoping the replacement circuit board can fix the frozen ice maker and main coils freezing problem. I'm hearing the "energy conservation" of all the new refrig are the problem. Not running the defroster coils as much as they should to remove all ice.

Fresh food warming up and cover in frost means you've got a clogged drain tube in your mechanical compartment, you will need a water leakage kit DA82-01415A. It's also recommended you replace the defrost sensor and depending on damage to the cover to replace it as well.

Nice video for those who are not trained. A metal screw driver should not be used to pull down the ice maker coil, spring a leak their and your refrigerator is not repairable. Also you missed a few other items that are notorious and frozen. The air vent above the auger motor. And if the auger drain was clear. Not alone the water drop to the machine or any other items. If their system sensors are bad. Best to let the professionals do the work so you are guaranteed proper repair that is covered by warranty and insurance of said company.

I have this fridge and the ice maker randomly stopped working. Test button says it’s working as does the SmartThings app. At first I thought it was ice build up so I took a blow dryer to it and melted it all (not knowing about the defrost mode). That worked for a bit then it stopped again, but there was almost no ice build up when it stopped. Now the only way I can get it to start making ice again is to unplug it and leave the freezer side open for 20 minutes or so with the ice tray out. Seems like the water source may be getting frozen in the source line and unplugging it melts that water - at least for a little while. Will the forced defrost help this? Also, can I do a forced defrost from the SmartThings app? Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!!

I'm here for the same reason most of us are..... the icemaker freezes up constantly.
This fridge should come with a hair dryer and extension cord as i have to defrost the unit once a month.
I must say that Samsung should be embarrassed to put their name on an appliance that is subpar at best.
I also bought a washer and dryer made by them. 6 months in the washer clutch packed it in but was covered under warranty.
I'm a mechanic by trade and know that the issue is the seals allowing humidity in and frosting the unit. I'm going to try and use some foam seal tape to help with the air leaks.

We picked up the food grade silicone from a local appliance shop & I cleaned surfaces with alcohol then sealed. We defrosted / unplugged the fridge for 24 hours then caulked the inside and outside of the ice maker housing on the bottom left.. (long side that meets the left fridge wall). I pulled out the ice maker and auger assembly to do this. Let it cure for 24 hours then reassembled and turned on.
Note: take the bottom back panel off & use an extra fan to add cooling until the fridge reaches correct temperatures.
Since doing this I do not have any water in my ice maker dispenser! Works great & worth the 48 hr inconvenience!

But the moisture problem associated w/ the evaporation system in the fridge makes it even worse than what's otherwise a bad idea. LG's icemakers are the only ones I've seen that have a logical setup, but even then... They suck too.
