I keep coming back here, so here's some detailed written directions... 1) First try remove ice tray by gently lifting up as you pull, but don't force it if it feels really frozen solid or jammed, or you may break a plastic part. 2) Next, to turn off IceMaker only (this does NOT disable the food Freezer area), tap "Fridge Manager" icon on Home screen and then tap "Fridge Settings" and switch the IceMaker mode to "OFF" + Proceed. Then tap the < Back icon button at the bottom of screen. 3) Staying on Fridge Manager screen, enter "Engineer Mode" by only tapping the top-left & top-right corners of that screen (left+right+left+right...) at medium speed until you see the "Engineer Mode" banner pop up toward bottom of screen. it will then take you to the Engineer Mode screen automatically. 4) tap "fridge function test" 5) tap "force run" 6) tap "force defrost" to start the IceMaker-only Defrost cycle (approx.20mins), BUT after about 10-15 mins, he recommends returning to this screen to tap "test cancel" and then tap "force defrost" again to RESTART the defrost cycle thereby keeping the heating coils the hottest presumably. repeat these steps until everything melts just enough for you carefully remove your ice tray/bucket. depending how much of a hurry you are to make ice, you can run warm water in bucket to remove the ice but I usually put it upside down in the sink overnight. 7) To turn down volume of the repeating system alert sound, tap Home + settings + sound + system/slider to your desired volume. *NOTE: If alert sound seems to stop well before the end of a full 20min cycle (possibly due to another routine fridge function or compressor coming on, etc.), you may need to restart the "force defrost" cycle again. 8) Place a long tray/plate or a towel directly under icemaker to catch melted icewater that should start dripping underneath. 9) to time your cycle, use your phone timer app or a regular timer set for 10-15mins. you can use the timer app on the refrigerator but it will be hard to get back to the Engineer Mode screen without having to repeat all the above steps. you could also create a repeating ToDo/Calendar reminder to defrost the icemaker every month or two, if preferred. 10) After IceMaker is visibly defrosted and melted/dry ice bucket is returned, don't forget to go to "fridge manager" and change IceMaker status back to "ON." NOTE 2: if the IceMaker is turned on, but does NOT begin making ice, you can try holding down the BLUE button (on the top right side of the icemaker) for 2 seconds, which will make a system sound to let you know the icemaker has been reset. Please see other comments here if these directions do not correct the problem.
This video, your instructions, and all the comments here have completely helped me solve my problems. Sure as sh*t, Samsung would've charged me a small fortune to fix this - if not outright lie to me about what this issue is. They wanted a $200 service & labor fee upfront: I'd be responsible for any further parts and labor if the issue was not under warranty (I have a Family Hub that's just three years old). My thanks to you all!!
Absolutely awesome video, for those who need it. I tried many things, sifted through 18 videos before finding your clear and concise directions. Thank You !!!!!
Wow. Worked like a charm, especially after I realized I wanted a freezer defrost (FD) and not a fridge defrost (RD). Took just a few seconds to be able to pull out the Ice Master tray and clean out all the clogged ice. This is the second time this has happened in a few months. What a piece of junk. At least I know how to fix it now
Thanks so much. I watched 5 videos and yours is the only one that solved the problem. Never would have located the Engineer Mode without your video. Ron
This video solved my problem, too. Apparently, if you reach out to Samsung about this issue they are offering to provide modifications to fix the issue at no cost to you. I'm going to call them tomorrow.
Literally life saver video! I saved it and keep coming back to it every 4 or so months once i need it since it keep happening to my fridge 😂. Thank you for much!
I'm so glad to find this tip. Thank you very much for posting. Who would know about this left right- left right thing? There aren't even soft buttons on the display there. 'Incredible. My tray isn't frozen in, but I do have frost under the ice maker, so I'm hoping this still does the trick for me. I'm trying the process now. I do not get any system sounds after selecting Fd mode (I checked the sound settings and there should be something audible if it's beeping at me). Waiting for the 30 minutes now so we'll see what happens. Thanks again.
You are such a life saver…. You literally saved my insanity!!!! Power was out which led it to referee when it came back on, it was one huge frozen cube lol took 24 hours of repeating this process, but finally unfroze enough to slide it out & to think in Was going to just turn fridge off n let it melt that way. 🎉 🎉thank you, thank, thank you….
Thank you so much, i watched many videos and none explained why i coudlnt get the icemaker open, now i know the ice has probably frozen it. Done the fridge defrost mode and now waiting but hopeful, life saver!!
Not all super heros wear caps.....🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 THANK YOU. once i opened the tray, o saw inside that ice was stuck in the section were the ice falls right after it's made. You have to really look in there to make sure no ice is stuck
Hello @Tech Junky, It really worked my ice maker tray was fully clogged with ice Thanks for the wonderful and amazing hack It worked wonders i had to Run the DF for 4 times as you said 😅😅😅
Thank you and to all those in the comments that made it easier. I don’t enjoy the “maintenance” of this “fancy” appliances. Once this is over just give me a “regular” refrigerator
Thank you so much for providing this video. We have been thawing our ice bucket for 3 days finally get it pulled out. 2 huge ice blocks in there. Now waiting for the ice maker back to work😅
It shouldn’t take 3 days to unthaw. Force defrost will automatically stop after about 15-20 mins. Run and re-run the force defrost every 10 mins. It will work faster that way.
Thank you soooo much🤗, followed your instructions step by step and my ice maker is working again!! Your a genius, god bless you ..thank you for this wonderful video. Great outcome.
Thanks for the video you saved me an engineer visit. Just suggest that really frozen ice makers made need you to repeat the forced defrost three time in 90 minutes. Thanks again very helpful video
Thank for this video.. other videos had me confused. Plus they didn't have this exact model. But I do! Now I'm waiting for 30mins. Hopefully this works
Great video! Thank you! I had to run the defrost 8 times before I could even get the ice tray out. There was a lot of ice built up in there. No cubes. All good now.
Just found this video after taking a knife to the ice cube container 😂 I was planning on breaking it to get it free 🤦🏼♀️ It’s been froze up for months now and we have tried everything including a hair dryer for over an hour. Lol. I’ve watched so many videos and not one single one suggested what you just did in 3 mins 🙌🏼 I’m running a second defrost now since the first one didn’t budge it at all but I am so hopeful. Thank you for this video 🤩
Glad I could help. If you have that much ice built up you will need to run the cycle multiple times. Also leave the left side of the fridge door open. That will help with defrosting. The cycle will automatically stop after about 15-20 mins so I suggest manually stopping and rerunning the Force Defrost every 15 mins. Also, when you are pretty sure that everything is melted. Run it one more time just to make sure the water line right at the point it comes into the ice maker is defrosted as well.
@@TechJunky777 one more question. I’m hitting the force defrost (fd) but should I be hitting the force defrost (rd) instead? I’ve done the (fd) several times with the fridge open and nothing has happened yet so I was thinking I might be picking the wrong one🤔
@@TechJunky777 oh ok. Thank you. It’s just barely dripping out and it’s still so stuck like it’s frozen in the back so much that it won’t open. So crazy.
Great video, I have the same fridge and it's exactly what I needed. I have one question, does the force defrost only last 30 minutes or until all the ice is melted and you put the icebin back in it starts on its own? Do I need to reset the icemaker by pushing the red button inside the icemaker?
The Force Defrost will only run about 15-20 mins then automatically stops and returns to cooling. So you can’t just turn it on and walk away. I recommend actually running for about 10 mins and then manually stopping it and then running it again for 10 mins etc. etc. until all the ice is melted. It seems to be warmer if you do that. You do not have to reset the ice maker but you could if you like…no harm done. It’s actually a blue button on the right side of the ice maker towards the front of it. Push and hold for a few seconds you will hear it make a different noise then release it.
Did you recently update the software? If so you could try resetting to factory settings in the general settings menu. As far as I know nothing has changed though. If that doesn’t work you could also try unplugging for ten minutes then plug back in (maybe try this first before a factory reset).
I found the best way to speed up this process is to use a hair dryer, on high once you get the ice tray out. Only down side is the fridge stays open for this process but, it takes 1/3 the time. I'm actually surprised this is a common problem for these types of fridges. That forced fridge defrost trick was brilliant.
@@chrismartinez7799 Yes I use a hair dryer also especially if the water line coming into the ice maker is frozen. If you defrost and it still isn’t making ice then that is usually the problem and the hair dryer is the best solution.
What are you replacing it with? BTW they do have a permanent fix with an updated ice maker. The link to the fix is in my descriptions. Best thing to do is call Samsung and demand they replace the ice maker for free with the updated model.
You can opt to turn it off manually but it will turn itself off after about 30 minutes. That is why I suggest running it at least 5 times in order to melt all of the ice.
It will automatically stop running force defrost after 15-20 minutes then you have to manually start it again. Do that over and over until everything is defrosted. Once you are done you could manually stop force defrost by pressing test cancel just above the force defrost selection.
Your video was so helpful. We did the force defrost and are wondering now how to get the ice maker working again? Do we have to do anything with the forced defrost button that we selected or just going back and turning on the ice maker will cancel that out? We also know that we have to put the sound back on correct?
The force defrost only turns on for about 30 mins then automatically turns off. If you have turned off the ice maker turning it on will just cancel out the force defrost. Also, yes turn the sound back up 😎 Glad I was able to help you!
Thank you I try so many video nothing work my husband find this one and will see it look like is working let you know later. Question the refrigerator will not go off? Only the ice maker?😢
So, where's the "fix"???? This is a recurring issue on most Samsung's. If you want to fix the problem, which is caused by faulty seals surrounding the ICEMAKER, then do a search . There's one video in particular that actually does fix the problem whereby the appliance tech (username "The Appliance Guru") takes you step by step through disassembly and the actual "fix" using aluminum tape to seal off the seams on the inside of the icemaker. The root problem is condensation from the internal air temp of the food compartment (41 degrees F-ish) leaking into the ICEMAKER where it's minus 1 or 2 Degrees F- ish. This causes the internals to produce ice on the surfaces and what you get is what you see in this video. My fridge didn't develop this problem for the first 3 to 4 years and then suddenly, wa-la, my ICEMAKER was stopping up with surface ice. As an engineer myself I can understand and postulate that the seals surrounding the ICEMAKER, likely some kind of liquid sealant, will break free of the two surface due to thermal expansion and freeze thaw cycles over the years of operation. Trust me, the aluminum taping of the internals worked for me and it will work for you.
In my description I have a link to Samsungs actual service bulletin. It’s a known flaw and Samsung was sued for it. My fix is temporary but a permanent fix involves more than just sealing the unit. I’ve pasted my link here for you… www.classaction.org/media/samsung-service-bulletin-ice-maker.pdf
@@TechJunky777 - Yes, I knew about the class action lawsuit. Many have already reported that the factory fix doesn't work either. It's expensive to implement and involves the use of an RTV sealant that again fails as it detaches from the surfaces over time. In fact the fellow in the video I describe above is seen removing the sealant that the factor fix instructs you to install. It too fails over time. My ICEMAKER got so bad that I couldn't go 4 to 5 days without clearing an ice cube jam at the top of the icemaker. I did the fix as described in that fellow's video and have been jam-free for nearly a year now with a very rare recurrence every so often. My family uses a lot of ice.
I found another youtuber who shows how to repair the seals cheaply and effectively. Combining this video and the other person I post below should do the trick. I am about to try it now, I just needed to know how to defrost without standing around with a hair dryer or throwing all my food in a cooler. ua-cam.com/video/ND-2Nkp1ItM/v-deo.html
@@jeanettefreeman9659 You can either manually press test cancel in the engineer screen and then touch Home Screen to exit engineer mode or just simply do nothing and it will automatically restart in under 15 minutes. And yes the noise stops after you press test cancel or letting it auto restart.
I have a low-pitched fan sound coming from my Samsung and the online help tech said I should unplug and defrost because it might be ice on the evaporator fan. Is your video accomplishing that or only defrosting the ice maker? 👍
@@JosephGonzalez-cb2eu If you wish you can go back in engineer mode and press test cancel to manually stop the defrosting. However, it will automatically stop and restart your icemaker all by itself if you leave force defrost running for about 20 minutes.
It defrosts the ice maker as well as the small freezer that houses the ice maker. The lower freezer you just pull open and let the air de-ice if you need to.
It should stop on its own after about 20 minutes. That’s why I say you need to run it a few times consecutively to melt all the ice. If it doesn’t stop you can manually stop it in engineer mode.
so after Force DF, and ice melted did u press some button to get the freezer/ice maker running again or automatically run itself once defrosting is achieved?
Go back to the settings and make sure that the ice maker is on. You can also press the reset button on the ice maker itself. It is the blue button on the right side of the ice maker towards the front. Press and hold for a few seconds. After you are sure the ice maker is on(in the settings menu) then just close the doors and wait until it makes more ice. Could be an hour or so. Then test it with a cup to see if the ice maker is working properly.
Go to fridge manager then fridge settings then at the top you will see the ice maker…. Toggle it on-to the right so it’s blue I would also go back to the engineer mode and press test cancel just to be 100% sure the force defrost isn’t on still. It should just work after that. That is all I had to do. But you could use the reset button on the ice machine after its on if you wish. I think the main issue may be not using it for long periods of time and also check the seal to make sure it is sealed properly when the tray is pushed back in. If the warmer air gets in it will cause it to frost up over time. You can order one if it isn’t sealing properly. Check it every month or so after that just to be on top of it in the future.
Hi I did the defrost button a bunch of times the ice maker is is starting to come out should I just keep pressing the defrost button or should i do something different that you know of
Best thing to do is run the force defrost for ten minutes then manually stop it by pressing test cancel and then re-running it over and over until everything is defrosted. It seems to be warmer and faster that way!
No it will automatically start up again after running force defrost for about 15-20 mins. Just go back to the Home Screen. Or you can manually stop it by pressing test cancel just above the force defrost selection.
I’ve ran the defroster a few times and nothing is happening. I hear the chimes so I know it thinks it’s defrosting but I don’t hear anything going on inside the ice maker and when I hold my hand underneath I don’t feel any warmth. Any suggestions?
If it is really frozen then it will take possibly more than a few runs to get the tray out. Once the tray is out put your hand up into the ice maker and you should feel the warmth of the heater. It seems to be faster and warmer if you run the force defrost and then manually press test cancel to stop it after 5-10 minutes and then run again…over and over until everything is melted. Also check to make sure you are running Force defrost FD not RD(rear defrost). RD only defrosts the rear of the refrigerator.
@@Charlie_127 It only runs for 15-20 minutes then automatically goes back to running normally. Best thing to do is run it for 5-10 mins then manually stop it by pressing test cancel and then immediately running Force Defrost again…do that over and over until it’s completely defrosted. It seems to be faster that way. Glad I could help! 😎
My water still works but the ice is not coming out does that mean my ice maker is broken? It makes the noise and rotates when I press but it's not making ice. I took the tray out easily without having to defrost. I turned the ice maker off a few minutes ago to see if that work, if not ill be back tomorrow to do the engineer reset.
@@mickeymichelle There is a blue reset button on the ice maker(towards the front on the right side of the ice maker) press and hold until you hear an audible noise. If that doesn’t work then the line might be frozen just where it enters the ice maker. In that case defrost for a bit longer(at least 10-20 more minutes). You may want to use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Then press and hold the blue button to reset the ice maker. Let me know if that helps!
When you are done just go back to the Home Screen. You can check your settings to make sure the ice maker is on in the fridge manager page if you wish. It should just start up by itself if you don’t do anything though. 😎
What to do when the ive maker starts working back again? Do we need to go back to Engineer mode and press any button? Do we need to do anything further on the fridge manager?
I just turned on the ice maker on the screen. I didn’t have to use the reset button on the ice maker. But I guess you could if you wish. No harm if you do! 😎
Unfortunately yes. I check every couple of weeks. I need to do this every month or two. The only way to completely solve the problem is to call Samsung directly and demand that they replace the ice maker with the updated version. Tell them you know that they are aware of the issue because there is a class action lawsuit against them in the USA. Even if it’s out of warranty you can make the demand. It’s worth a try. The worst they can say is no. 😎 I’m glad I could help you. Thanks for your support! 😊
What force defrost do I select I have two options… -Force defrost (rd) -Force defrost (Fd) I chose the last one (Fd), do you know if this is correct one?
The ice takes a few hours to form and start dropping. Make sure you turned the ice maker back on in the settings menu. Usually by the next day the whole tray is full. Sometimes if I haven’t used the ice for a while I just take the whole tray out and dump in the sink and let the process start over again for fresher ice! You will hear the ice falling into the tray periodically when the ice maker is working.
@@cdpenrosecreations1877 If there is no ice in the tray by the morning then it’s possible the water line just before the tray has frozen also. If that is the case you need to do a few more cycles of defrosting. I recommend doing five cycles if that’s the issue.
I've heard that the Samsung fridges are notorious for this issue. Apparently they have replacement parts to prevent this from happening for about $400. Love the fridge otherwise.
For what it's worth: what I learned, the defrost cycle only runs for 30 minutes. I had to run my cycle about 5 times in a row before I could easily pull out the tray. This takes considerable time, so patience and time are needed. I'm leaving my ice maker turned off indefinitely. Thank you for this post!
It will automatically stop after about 15-20 minutes. You can manually stop it by pressing test cancel. I find the best way to do it is let it run for 10 minutes then press test cancel and then restart the force defrost for another ten minutes…do this over and over until everything is defrosted. It seems to be warmer and quicker with this method.
@@TechJunky777 Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'll give it a shot! I've always just tried chipping away at some of the ice buildup, but this time is just stopped completely. I also tried doing the blue side button to reset it. I'm thinking there might be some buildup deep inside that's causing a blockage. Not sure what the next step would be if this doesn't work. Any suggestions?
@@Hawkis90 If the blockage is very bad then use a hairdryer at the same time using force defrost. I find that there may still be some ice at the very back…behind the ice maker that needs to be thawed. A hairdryer will make quick work of it. Also, make sure everything is completely dry before restarting everything. If moisture is still in there it will start the ice building up again and you will have to do this more frequently.
Yes. You will need to run the defrost multiple times until all the ice melts. The force defrost mode automatically stops after about 15-20mins so you will need to keep running it a few times.
I left this button on and went to bed. Thinking it would just shut off. When I woke up it was still selected and the ice was still pretty solid. When the button is selected, should it do anything to indicate that it it working?
@@jessicatobias1582 When it is selected it will make noises. It should automatically shut off after 15-20 minutes. That is why your ice was still solid. Best thing to do is cancel the force defrost and then run it again. See if you hear the sounds(the sound volume is in the fridge manager settings section). Then after 15 minutes manually cancel it and re-run it again. Do that until all the ice melts. When you are done just make sure it is off in engineer mode.
So I defrosted but it is ONLY making a few ice cubes 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️ after 3hrs!!!! Do I need to defrost some more? The water is coming out great but not alot of ice 😔😡
If there is a lot of ice you will have to do force run multiple times until you can get the tray to come out. Sometimes it takes 5 or more tries. I suggest try a few more times and try to gently remove the tray after each run. To open the tray you need to gently push the tray up and then pull straight out because there is a latch holding the tray in…..gently push up and pull out.
Go back to the fridge manager and check freezer temp and make sure it is on. Test cancel is really all you need to do but you can also reset to factory settings if all else fails in the settings menu. Of course then you might have to update your software too. You can do that also in the settings menu.
Thx for the video it was informative, but after I followed your instructions my freezer stopped working and won’t get cold (hovering around 45F) I’ve tried unplugging and plugging back in which won’t work. I’ve also tried the power freeze mode but doesn’t work either. I’m getting a constant loud humming from the fridge now. Any ideas to help me out? Thx in advance
There is a blue reset button on the ice machine … on the right side towards the front of it. It’s a small square blue button. Press and hold for a few seconds. You will hear a different sound. That should reset it. Also go back into the fridge manager page and make sure the ice maker is turned “on”. It should be in settings if it’s not on the fridge manager page itself.

I did thr defrost for an hour and all of the ice on the side came out but there was still some ice on the back side of the unit. I couldnt tell if that was supposed to be there. How long did you have to wait after this fix for the ice maker to produce more ice?
I didn’t have to wait too long at all. I just made sure to remove as much ice as possible and dried the inside with a towel. You can use a butter knife to chip off ice that formed around the ice maker(it’s the ice around the outside of the ice maker you want to remove) just be careful not to damage the ice maker. It will start producing ice in about an hour! You will hear the ice drop in the tray. Let me know how it goes😊
@@mpaige7081 if you simply do nothing it will automatically turn back on. Or you can press test cancel just above the force defrost selection. I would just run the force defrost multiple times until everything is defrosted and dried fully then just hit test cancel just to be sure. Then wait a few hours before checking the tray to see if you have new cubes. Edit: BTW force defrost automatically stops after about 15 mins or so…so you have to keep running it over and over to fully defrost everything. If you need to be quick then just use a hair dryer at the same time as using force defrost.
Yes it will after about 20 mins. That is why I suggest stopping and starting the defrost after about 15 minutes just to be sure you are constantly defrosting until all the ice has been melted.
Hey man, great video. I have a UK model and I don't seem to be able to get into the service menu, is there any other way you know to access it? Thanks!
Thanks for the response. As far as I know there is no other way to get to the engineer mode. I do notice that sometimes you have to try several times…. It can be picky! I have been searching for over 2 weeks on how to do this and when you started going back and forth I was like who in the world would know to do that to get into engineer mode. What next, hit up down, right, left spin around high kick twerk and it opens up to show a hidden speak easy access???? Like really Samsung they are doing the most with this option to defrost.

4) tap "fridge function test"
5) tap "force run"
6) tap "force defrost" to start the IceMaker-only Defrost cycle (approx.20mins), BUT after about 10-15 mins, he recommends returning to this screen to tap "test cancel" and then tap "force defrost" again to RESTART the defrost cycle thereby keeping the heating coils the hottest presumably. repeat these steps until everything melts just enough for you carefully remove your ice tray/bucket. depending how much of a hurry you are to make ice, you can run warm water in bucket to remove the ice but I usually put it upside down in the sink overnight.
10) After IceMaker is visibly defrosted and melted/dry ice bucket is returned, don't forget to go to "fridge manager" and change IceMaker status back to "ON."
NOTE 2: if the IceMaker is turned on, but does NOT begin making ice, you can try holding down the BLUE button (on the top right side of the icemaker) for 2 seconds, which will make a system sound to let you know the icemaker has been reset. Please see other comments here if these directions do not correct the problem.

It shouldn’t take 3 days to unthaw. Force defrost will automatically stop after about 15-20 mins. Run and re-run the force defrost every 10 mins. It will work faster that way.

Thanks for the video! Do I need to do anything after everything has been defrosted? Or does it start making ice on its own?
It will start making ice on its own! 😎
@@TechJunky777 oh thank you for the advice. I’ve done it 3 times but I’ll try it a few more with the door open. I appreciate it soooo much.
@@TechJunky777 one more question. I’m hitting the force defrost (fd) but should I be hitting the force defrost (rd) instead? I’ve done the (fd) several times with the fridge open and nothing has happened yet so I was thinking I might be picking the wrong one🤔
No the Rd does the back of the fridge

Ugh! This tip worked many times but now I can’t get to engineer mode by tapping. Do you know if anything changed?
Did you recently update the software? If so you could try resetting to factory settings in the general settings menu. As far as I know nothing has changed though. If that doesn’t work you could also try unplugging for ten minutes then plug back in (maybe try this first before a factory reset).
How long did you wait after you put everything back together to try out the ice ?
@@kimjongun9926 it makes ice fairly slowly so I waited overnight and checked the next morning.
Amazing video!!! Thank you!! Now for th permanent fix - new fridge. Bye bye Samsung.
What are you replacing it with? BTW they do have a permanent fix with an updated ice maker. The link to the fix is in my descriptions. Best thing to do is call Samsung and demand they replace the ice maker for free with the updated model.

Android interface, gotta love it 🤩. Thanks for the share on this issue.
Do you beed to take out of forced DF mode after an hour or does it have a set timer that will revert back to normal?
You can opt to turn it off manually but it will turn itself off after about 30 minutes. That is why I suggest running it at least 5 times in order to melt all of the ice.
Do you need to put the fridge back in force run mode or test cancel mode after the ice is deforested?
I should add…. If the force defrost is running and you select the force defrost button again it will turn it off if you want to be sure it’s off

Question the refrigerator will not go off? Only the ice maker?😢
The refrigerator will turn off while the ice maker is defrosting but it shouldn’t take too long to defrost it. 😊
I’ve pasted my link here for you…
www.classaction.org/media/samsung-service-bulletin-ice-maker.pdf
This solution only solves the problem temporarily. Two days later, my ice cube maker was completely frozen again.
It’s in my description. The complete fix involves much more than just defrosting.
Once it is defrosted does the noise stop. Do I have to do anything other than turn the icemaker back on
@@jeanettefreeman9659 You can either manually press test cancel in the engineer screen and then touch Home Screen to exit engineer mode or just simply do nothing and it will automatically restart in under 15 minutes. And yes the noise stops after you press test cancel or letting it auto restart.
Awesome video thank you I'm thinking of gettting a new icemaker insert with modified cooling clamps and seal the ice maker box
Let me know how it goes! Here is the service bulletin also…
www.classaction.org/media/samsung-service-bulletin-ice-maker.pdf
Having the same issue - this Force Defrost Mode (FD) JUST defrosts the icemaker, not the fridge or the freezer right?
Right. FD is for the ice maker only. If you want to defrost the back of the fridge then you would use RD
I have a low-pitched fan sound coming from my Samsung and the online help tech said I should unplug and defrost because it might be ice on the evaporator fan. Is your video accomplishing that or only defrosting the ice maker? 👍
It is only defrosting the ice maker. However, unplugging might help. It resets the system. Unplug for a few minutes…replug. See what happens.
Thank you very much for sharing this!!
does this defrost the freezer below as well? That i did not want to happen. Or is it just the icemaker
It’s just the ice maker. To defrost the lower freezer just open it.
After it's defrosted do I have to go back in engineer mode to turn something back on
@@JosephGonzalez-cb2eu If you wish you can go back in engineer mode and press test cancel to manually stop the defrosting. However, it will automatically stop and restart your icemaker all by itself if you leave force defrost running for about 20 minutes.
Did this fix it for good? Or do you have to do it often?
It’s only a temporary fix until it freezes up again. The permanent fix is here…
www.classaction.org/media/samsung-service-bulletin-ice-maker.pdf
Does this defrost only the ice maker or the freezer as well?
It defrosts the ice maker as well as the small freezer that houses the ice maker. The lower freezer you just pull open and let the air de-ice if you need to.
After the ice melts, do I have to turn off specific stuff, or do I just have to turn on the ice maker again. Same for defrost?
It will stop by itself in 15-20 mins or just turn the ice maker back on 👍
My configuration has forced defrost fd. And rd.
Which one should i use do you think?
Use FD. It means Force Defrost - ice maker only. RD means rear defrost and it only defrosts the rear of the fridge.
Good to know because my fridge froze up in the back one time a year ago
Thank you! Great video!
Excellent video. Worked like a charm, thanks!
Question. Do I need to take it out of forced defrost mode? Or does that stop on its own? Thanks
It should stop on its own after about 20 minutes. That’s why I say you need to run it a few times consecutively to melt all the ice. If it doesn’t stop you can manually stop it in engineer mode.

Thank God for this video. But after I put it back. Still no ice. How long do I have to wait?
Just wait a few hours for it to restock ice cubes
so after Force DF, and ice melted did u press some button to get the freezer/ice maker running again or automatically run itself once defrosting is achieved?
Go back to the settings and make sure that the ice maker is on. You can also press the reset button on the ice maker itself. It is the blue button on the right side of the ice maker towards the front. Press and hold for a few seconds. After you are sure the ice maker is on(in the settings menu) then just close the doors and wait until it makes more ice. Could be an hour or so. Then test it with a cup to see if the ice maker is working properly.
Go to fridge manager then fridge settings then at the top you will see the ice maker…. Toggle it on-to the right so it’s blue
I would also go back to the engineer mode and press test cancel just to be 100% sure the force defrost isn’t on still.

This is amazing. How long after you restarted the ice maker did the ice start to form? We have had it ion for a couple of hours and still no ice.
The ice takes a few hours to form and start dropping. Make sure you turned the ice maker back on in the settings menu. Usually by the next day the whole tray is full. When you are removing the tray you need to push it up and then pull it out. There is a latch holding it in place. Just be gentle
For what it's worth: what I learned, the defrost cycle only runs for 30 minutes. I had to run my cycle about 5 times in a row before I could easily pull out the tray. This takes considerable time, so patience and time are needed. I'm leaving my ice maker turned off indefinitely.

Thank you! You are my hero
Glad I could help you! ☺️
When do you turn the ice maker back on?
@@mpaige7081 if you simply do nothing it will automatically turn back on. Or you can press test cancel just above the force defrost selection. I would just run the force defrost multiple times until everything is defrosted and dried fully then just hit test cancel just to be sure. Then wait a few hours before checking the tray to see if you have new cubes. Edit: BTW force defrost automatically stops after about 15 mins or so…so you have to keep running it over and over to fully defrost everything. If you need to be quick then just use a hair dryer at the same time as using force defrost.
Will it stop defrosting on its own?
Yes it will after about 20 mins. That is why I suggest stopping and starting the defrost after about 15 minutes just to be sure you are constantly defrosting until all the ice has been melted.
Do I need to set the defrost mode back to “ normal “ after that ?
No need it just resets itself! 😎
I’ll try to find more info on the UK models and send you what I find. I suppose the model I have is just North American so your model might have a different access but as far as I know it should be the same.
What is your model number? Should be on the inside of the door. Google that number with engineer mode and see if anything comes up.
@@TechJunky777 Thanks so much. I spoke to Samsung support earlier and they claimed there was no such mode on my model which seems unlikely. Their advice: unplug and defrost the entire fridge. Or use a hairdryer on the ice master....!
@@TechJunky777 it's the rf56m9540sr. Nothing comes up specifically for that model when I search but a few people are saying that that functionality has been killed with a software update. Or changed to something else not yet revealed!
@@HamiltonFishes I wouldn’t put it past them to kill it with a software update! That way you need someone to service it. But a lot of people are successful in getting Samsung to replace the ice maker for free with an upgraded model part. I would call back and press them about it because it is a known issue.
I guess it’s only meant to be accessed by a technician. 🤷♂️ They couldn’t have made it any more difficult could they? 🤣 Anyways, I’m glad you found the hidden speak easy! 😎 The best permanent fix is to call Samsung and demand they replace the ice maker free of charge. If you go to my description at the very bottom of that page I have a link to the service bulletin from Samsung. Samsung has known about this issue for years now!!!
