- Nicole VanderHeyden was a loving mother and devoted teacher - her friends said that her smile would light up any room. But one night, in May 2016, Nicole's wonderful life in Green Bay, Wisconsin was cut short. This episode of "Prime Crime with Jesse Weber" dives deep into the case of the young mom and her deadly night out.

While investigators initially suspected VanderHeyden's boyfriend, the evidence pointed to George Burch, a man from Virginia, as the perpetrator. Despite Burch's claims that VanderHeyden's boyfriend was responsible, a jury found Burch guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in 2018. Burch appealed his conviction, but the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld the decision in June 2021.

Holy crap I’m so happy for Matheu, way to stand up for yourself when you know you’re right

Those two cops are horrible people. They had him and Doug tried and convicted.

The Fitbit is what saved her boyfriend. I saw a report where they were able to corroborate his story literally to the step. The Fitbit recorded his resting heartbeat as he slept, the appropriate uptick and number of steps from his bed when he awoke to walk to tend to his crying baby, and on and on. That was a definitive timeline which could not be disputed. There was no time where he was shown walking as many steps as it would be to get to the vehicle, nor an increased heart rate as one would have coming upon the scene and bashing someone.
Google dashboard is what saved him.
Excellent reminder. There must have been a great number of more false convictions before advanced technology came along.
@Lala_B I saw that one too
@@redwatch.Absolutely. I genuinely wonder how many people were wrongly incarcerated and how many people are murderers walking free
just because the boy friend was cleared does not mean someone else did not knock out the killer. This video did not show enough DNA evidence to show me he was the killer- is that because they want us to think the man convicted was not the killer? We have seen our vaunted media do this with other criminal cases. The fact the jury convicted him in 3 hours suggests that there was DNA evidence liking him to violent acts. I would like to know what he had been previously convicted of????? Again why not tell us that? Would his prior convictions cause us to see he had related previous convictions? IF in fact he did do it then he is the best lair I have ever seen. His body language etc is not consistent with that of a guilty man. But I think if that happened to me I would go to the police because I would know DNA would link me to her.
Being accused of a murder you didn't commit must be the ultimate nightmare.
The real nightmare is spending time in prison for a crime you didn't commit. It's 10x worse when it's a bad charge, people don't even wanna think of that possibility.
Being murdered is pretty bad too.

Well……if the victim is your sister would you care if they “bullied” a possible suspect?? I don’t … stop because you know what this slanted uninformed video showed you, educate yourself and look at the big picture

Awesome story. Very sad and very scary but I’m glad justice was served.
How could criminal come up with this story and think that jury would believe him. Those defence attorneys are same as him .
The moment I saw the boyfriend crying I said "he didn't do it". I could tell from here that it was a genuine cry, so surely the detectives felt the same. Interesting how they had to sidestep their instinct when the evidence initially pointed to him.
I saw him cry thought 'thats a real cry, he didnt do it' and teared up myself, then they said well they found blood on shoes and the garage and thought 'oh im a terrible judge apparently' but glad to see it wasnt him and you could see right through the real murderers story
That really shouldn’t mean anything tho…you shouldn’t make any opinions off of how a person reacts. If he’s not a cryer, and he didn’t cry, that shouldn’t incriminate him either. The fact of the matter is that there was no evidence on him at all. He had an alibi because he was with his friend, his Fitbit showed that he didn’t leave his house after getting home, her Progressive car insurance was monitoring her vehicle and that showed that her vehicle never left. All they had against him was that he got in a fight with her and he had turkey blood on a shoe in his house. Everything else is irrelevant
@@curtf9813 Don't know if you're talking to me or the original comment but people very often think they are good at reading a person and often people are good at manipulating so when we saw him cry and it felt real to us, then there was suspicion and in the end he turned out to be innocent it felt like 'hey maybe I wont be fooled by a murderer in my own life' and that's comforting even if its not true.
But in a case with very little evidence and also at the start of every case you have to go off how people act.
The police have to look at a suspects body language as well as what they are saying, if someone cries and then laughs and then cries and then laughs its odd, it might not make you the killer but its odd so it will get you some level of suspicion. Understanding body language is a very important part of interrogating a suspect and also talking to witnesses.
I'm not a detective but I would say nothing is irrelevant in any case, we have the luxury of knowing everything having watched the whole video but the police at the time had to go with where the evidence pointed, and the victims partner is always the first to be written off.

As a law student, a defence team represents the only line of defence for an accused against the entire state - zealous advocacy requires stepping in the shoes of your client and if that is the story the accused gives the attorneys, they are duty bound to defend it or otherwise sever ties.
What i do find unrespectable is how the accused would know any of the salatious arguments between Greg and the deceased. That would only have come after discovery. Which would have been after the lawyer had already been given an explanation.

I am glad that Doug and his friend never went to prison for murder . The real killer looks so rough and how could he brutally murder this beautiful woman . RIP Nicole 🙏😇
The monster seems unusually confident and honest on the stand which is why i'm sure his lawyer got him to testify but it's also the sign of a real psychopath, too bad about the overwhelming evidence though
I like this dark background much better than the walls that look like they are smeared with something like dried blood on other shows with Jesse Weber.
THANK YOU!!!!! I thought I was the only one who thought that!!! I thought: am I just watching too many crime shows and I just see blood everywhere now?!!!

The former sheriff says law enforcement did an “excellent job”. The fact is law enforcement interrogated, handcuffed, arrested, fingerprinted, incarcerated and further traumatized the grieving boyfriend of the victim. That’s not lost on me.
@@seanm3226 And so quickly… I was surprised
Ah, the return of the Mysterious Gunman in Dark Clothes. Should be on FBIs most wanted with how often he shows up.
Personally, I guess the picture of George Burch was not the picture when he originally started with. He sure doesn’t look to me that he is 38.
Its so sick hearing a killer tell such a horrible story. Clearly she fought for her life against that killer capturing his DNA in the process. In her death she declared his guilt
She also picked him up at a bar. Did you miss that part?
@@jaimhaas5170 I think she got a lift home with the guy, thinking her partner was there so she could turn the guy down without any issues once there but he wasn’t happy with that
@@katherinespinelli-jones2816 she put herself in that position correct? She was drunk too. Tell me her actions matter little?
@@katherinespinelli-jones2816 wrong she knew what she was doing. she saw her bf flirt with another man her first reaction is to sleep with another man.
@@jaimhaas5170no her actions did not warrant her murder. How does that make sense to you? Victim blaming is not the answer here.
How tf would anyone believe Burch's crazy story?
just look around u-tube or social media. just takes one on the jury. i find most people present an incrdibly biased point-of-view on their pet belief. they defend things that have no defence. religion anyone?
@terrenceolivido741 one on a jury would end up in a mistrial and would absolutely be re-tried

When will people learn that alcohol ruins everything??!
I would say misuse or abuse or overuse of alcohol ruins things. Civilized drinking, like wine with supper, certainly has no similarity to the way so many people overdo it. I was never able to just have one drink and became a binge drinker. It made me unhappy, unhealthy and aggressive when I drank. I haven't had a drink in 6 years and for me it is definitely the right choice. I really believe more people should not drink as they cannot handle it or use it inappropriately to self medicate, like I did. Many people think they cannot have fun without alcohol, which is when it becomes dangerous. It's sad. I think that a lot of the European countries do it properly. Families drink at meals together and so alcohol never becomes a crutch. It's just a pleasant addition to a nice time. We should learn from them.
No murderers ruin everything... Don't blame the alcohol cause if you are then we would all be murderers.
People still get killed, children get abducted with no alcohol involved, it’s the malicious intent that ruins everything
It’s murderers and predators ruining everything.
Not sure why it would be necessary to add music to this video. Sometimes it's loud tinkling sounds, other times is annoying theatrical music. It was distracting and not worth wasting my time trying to watch it. 👎👎👎👎
Right
Oh you poor wittw baby... you hearded moosik... the world must bow to your fragility
I don't know who won the production crew thought that was a good idea they must have been a theater kid
About 10 years ago driving home from work on my 45 minute commute I was behind a car where the passenger was throwing an article of clothing every couple of miles on the freeway. I thought that was very creepy.
Maybe it was burch
Imagine a guy of that size overpowering you. How terrifying!! It's better to stick together and be safe than to risk harm. What a tragedy.
Man, it's so absolutely sad that she made it all the way to the front of her house that fateful night but wasn't able to get out of this monster's vehicle and go inside! I'm sure that when she opened his passenger-side door to get out, he placed the cord around her neck and dragged her back into his vehicle. I don't doubt at all that he never had any intentions of letting her go and to keep her from panicking and trying to fight him, he calmly followed her directions all the way to the front door of her home letting her think that she was going to get home safely and upon her trying to get out of his vehicle -- he attacked her and strangled her.
What a tragic ending to this beautiful young woman who was so loved and left behind three beautiful children who will never know her!
.
i agree with your comment, but also the alcolism and coming home with a man from the bar - yes it is sad exactly as you describe - but she was on that path.
Horrible beast😢
You forgot the part of the story where she picked him up at the bar all drunk and seeking attn. She was very responsible for making bad decisions and it cost her life.
@@terrenceolivido741 so true. She brought most of this bad kharma onto herself.
@@jaimhaas5170 she didn't choose to be murder. You have a weird fetish. Since you believe in karma. Bad karma is coming your way.
You were 'obstructed' to stand by the back of the vehicle? Then 'obstructed' to pick up the body?

@@deathvalleybro9320Yes, WE know that, but he doesn't. He said he was "obstructed" instead of "instructed" to do something, over and over. Just shows how dense he is, apart from being an evil p.o.s.

I’ll never not get a kick out of the intensity of “Prime Crime” at the beginning. Lol
"On PROIM CROIM" lmao the pronunciation kills me
What got me was when you said “back in 2016”… as if that was a Long time ago. Jeez time flies.
As soon as they said she had a zest for life, i knew it didn't go well for her. Please do not light up a room with your smile and do not have a bubbly personality, things might go south for you.😮
This is the funniest comment on a crime video ever
No it's not funnyat all! If you are aware, this is how it always sadly goes for those who are "good souls" the people whose smile lights up a room and are happy souls! Evil souls target those good lights because they are dark! Evil, dark souls like to kill the good souls unfortunately!! How it goes!

Don’t EVER talk to the cops!!
If Doug didn’t have that Fitbit on, he would have been railroaded by a corrupt system.
Brilliant production, sad story. Fact is, like germs, random crims are everywhere
Scary how they were ready to arrest the wrong man
Worst detectives, worst interrogation of Matheu I have EVER witnessed. The goal is to let them talk, not yell over them.
The stuff that they found to connect him was MIND BLOWING When they say they’re gonna find something it could be something that your brain is not even thinking about
