Incinerated (adj): Burned to ash. Reduced to cinders. It does not mean "warped".
@@reoire843 it's a past participle.
I like how you guys were using a Nintendo Power to play this in 2017.
Keeping it old school.
Takes me back when I used to do that.
Sometimes you just gotta go with what works, lol.
I wouldn't call picking up your smartphone and looking up a walkthrough on the web "keeping it old school"!
LOL
while you watch two people play a game on the internet
Man oh man...I remember renting this game when I was 7 or 8 and I could not do ANYTHING with it. My whole weekend was ruined! This was one of those games where you couldn't even play it if you didn't have some sort of guide.
Did you read the instruction manual?
Ever see a kid that doesn't even know what Chess is try to play Battle Chess?
It "runed" your weekend?
@Disthron I don't know about you, but my local rental stores didn't include any manuals or keep any on the shelves. If we were lucky they actually put the box up on the shelves, but usually it was a generic case with a printed insert displaying the name of the game on top the rental store's logo.
I was actually 5 or 6 when I played this. And I beat it. It's still one of those games I mention as being one of my favorites. I'm tempted to do a video playing this.
Mike needs to beat this game on livestream
I'd love to see this!
That would be awesome! :D
If he does, I hope he plays the genesis version.
Hell yeah
Oh. Hey. Yes.
This game has a VERY specific way to play it. The decisions and things you have to do are similar to what you would encounter in a point and click adventure. If you don't play it the way it wants you to play it, this game is going to be a miserable experience. Even if you know what to do, this game is still friggin tough.
Are there cues that you can learn for all of the different traps, or is it just a case of "don't go there, I died last time?" If there are cues, I can see how you could enjoy this game. If it's just trial and error, I'm not sure how it would be enjoyable. Most of the "I beat the game" comments say that they were following a guide to do so, even back in the day. That alone makes this sound like a really frustrating game. The graphics are nice though. :-P
There are very loose clues. So basically you run around in the game knowing what you need to do and then trial and error to get desired result.
The wizard is incinerated instantly.
"WE TELEPORTED"
You should play the Genesis version.
Those kill animations were brutal XD
The violence was sweet but the music on the NES version was a lot better.
Agreed.
TheScottReilly I thought they had one for the Genesis. Thank you.
Azriel87 The Android version is Best.
When they don't read or pay attention it's so frustrating I can't even finish.
Which video are you referring to Laurelindo? It can't be this one unless you watched it in the same manner that James and Mike "play" Immortal for NES.
That's the great thing about youtube, if you don't like a video you don't have to watch it, it's a wacky and crazy concept, I know.
Fall in hole, wizard catches himself, they tap A and the wizard's legs come up in an attempt to climb out, they give up and fall.
"imagine beating the 7 levels?" What do you mean? YOU GOTTA DO IT!! please!! Lol this video was exciting n fun to watch lol
8 in some versions
won't ever happen with that lvl 1 certificate. they missed some required items in that run lol
no body wtf required items?
It is oldschool unforgiving dungeon crawling. IIRC you actually can go back up floors if you miss stuff, at least until you fall into the whirlpool level.
Leo Charles Yes...Do it Mike.
This was frustrating to watch since you didn't pay attention to what the game told and kept repeating the same mistakes.
they have been spoiled by todays games that hold your hand and have forgotten the lessons of the past.
Pat I know, how many times must it say that everything is incinerated before it sinks in lol
Ylze Tyr Yes. So frustrating!
Agreed. They had the attention span of a toddler in a toy store. Not sure why they just didn't actually try to figure out anything as opposed to just blindly running forward and then just constant button mashing. This is a great game and was very ambitious for its time.
They thought the Shades were bats!
Reading the incantation doesn't teleport you - it just outright kills you and everyone in the vicinity.
It doesn't seem like a bad game, it just seems really unforgiving
Gunnar Hansen they tend to be right on certain ones but this is just one I don’t trust them on, I mean saying this is worse than E.T. Is really a stretch.
There are differences between unforgiving and unfair. Like most of darksouls is unforgiving but fair, and there is BOC in darksouls 1 which is BS and unfair
@@windflier1684 what is BOC?
@@loganross1861 Blue Oyster Cult, the famous Rock'n'Roll group
James and Mike didn't like the game, but it did get fairly good reviews from a lot of sources. It was not really a "little kid" game. Deffinatly geared towards an older group that liked games like zork and shadowgate.
Shadowgate was full of cheap deaths also.
You should check a playthrough on UA-cam its very entertaining like a DnD sesion
It's not the worst game ever but it's still trial and error in the worst way possible.
"There's a dragon at the end of Dragon's Lair too"
"Well I would hope so, it's DRAGON'S LAIR"
I'm dead.
Never have I ever wanted you two to finish a game more in my life.

Hey, are you German?
Roger Gurman Are you a Gurman?
The Great Hadoken I am. How did you know?
Roger Gurman just a hunch, I guess...
You know, if you guys would read some of the text you'd understand more of what's going on, like when you read the runes it flat out says it incinerated you and everything. It might not have surprised you when you showed up at the start had you read that lol.
Or when it says the torch illuminates the room, and yet keeping walking into the same pits in the dark.
@@CapnHolic If they downloaded the instruction booklet it tells you how to get out of the pit traps. Can't wait to play more of it on the switch. Playing hybrid heaven on the hardest mode. Fun N64 title.
I remember being like 12 years old and I got really far in the game when I rented this at Pharmor. How can't these 2 get anywhere. I didn't even use NIntendo Power either and I suck at games.
I remember beating this when I was ten... after playing it regularly for almost four years.
"Do you know what a rune is?" - Mike 2017
Someone doesn't know what incinerated means. Thanks for the laughs, guys.
The definition of insanity is repeating the same process expecting different results.
Timothy Veigel I was going to write this exact comment.
Ha ha, James and Mike just got Einsteined.
IamI3rian Well, I be damned!

"the wizard is incinerated"
"that's good!"
no, i don't think it was good.
>game's called "The Immortal"
>die every time you so much as sneeze
+Bulliwyf
It's simple: you're not him..
'The Immortal' is the wizard you are sent in to rescue.
Yeah, but how do you explain coming back to life and trying again? Huh?! HUH?!
+The Great Hadoken
Hehe, then every videogame's main character is an immortal :P
_(even if it dies at the end, because you could always restart)_
Paul Sde oh yeah?! Well...well...well...what if the cartridge breaks?! Huuuhh?!
This seems like a game that isn't really bad, just unforgiving and a bit cheap with some of the traps. Kinda like d&ds tomb of horrors.
This game's frustrating, cryptic and obnoxious in design. I. Friggin. Love. It.
The Immortal is more of an adventure game at its core, and a really unique design that combines level memorization with some basic inventory puzzles and combat. Completely different in comparison to most of the NES fare for that era.
The sound of thousands of voices shouting out, "Tap the button to pull yourself out of the pit!" and "Use fireballs to light the torches!"
I really miss this kind of mysticism heavy classic fantasy setting.
I have this for genesis, and yes, it's ridiculously cryptic. The saving grace is that it creates a unique mood that makes it great for a somewhat frustrating all-nighter.
This game looks like if an old defensless man stumbled into Dark Souls...
lol
Dark souls isnt bad, people have played it using bananas. James in Mike arent very bright when it comes to new experiences. "you were incinerated, want to continue?" "hey were in lvl 2!" seriously.
This game went right over your heads.
I am surprised to see that nobody left the comment with words "roguelike" here :)
This game reminds me of Nethack a lot, combat is a lot different though.
I would love to see James&Mike do it on one of the mondays.
A lot of older adventure games did this asking thing where you had to choose if you want to take something or not. It added to the mysteru behind the items and a new layer to the story when if you didn't take sth might change the outcome. I know you guys are more like Zelda fans where every single item you just pick and that's just it, but in adventure games it was mostly a choice. Gotta say a very ambitious game for what the NES was capable of.
I have nightmares of the flying carpet
Tell me about it. That worm room, though...
I need more of this stuff, or the Genesis Version!
this reminds me so much of renting games in the late 80's and trying to play them with my friends... "what do I do?" "I don't know!!" "what does the book say???" "it doesn't have a book!!!" "DAMMIT!!!"
You need to press B repeatedly to get out of the holes. Get a turbo controller if you must. Also, you need to approach the floor passages from the ladder side, or else you fall. This is all in the manual by the way. I got to the third level without Nintendo Power back in the day. Oh, and get all items you see, you'll need them.
God damn it, guys! The wizard and the whole room was incinerated. You just killed yourself and received a message of doing so. Reading runes kills you, so don't read them. Lighting up torches on the wall makes the room lit. Red meter in fights is fatigue, which slows your moves. It's not that hard to figure out. The game is meant to be played as trial and error, you are supposed to pay attention to details and progress through levels as puzzles with traps and items. There's a password save between levels and you are meant to find and keep some items for future use to beat the game. It's a pretty cool game actually.
Nightfallium ^^THIS! I've never played the game and figured it out from watching. I wanted it back then, and now I really want it!
I remember an older neighbor friend playing this and watching him. Completely forgot this game till now....
I've died more in this game than I have Dark Souls.
uno is the dark souls of ... i hate dark souls comparisons
Fine fine, I died more to this game than Ghosts & Goblins ;)
They seem to have missed the button mash to save your self from pit traps, when you fall you catch yourself with your staff and have a chance to climb out, its not bullshit you were doing it wrong on this occasion.
Shouldn't James and Mike read the instruction manual? It's really sad when they say this game is shit when they don't even know how to play it. The Immortal is a classic on the NES (and Genesis) :) Leave it to the pro's guys, this one isn't for you two.
yeah cry for james John6yt. He's the one that needs your tears
This game looks like utterly garbage. I'm sure it's shit. (Even though it COULD look fun to play. But it isn't.)
@@nowonmetube
I agree; this isometric rpg _definitely_ doesn't belong on a console -- let alone one that's very limited by it's controls and graphics. It's definitely more of a PC kinda game. I'd find myself enjoying the hell outta this game if it were on PC because it (probably) wouldn't play like such a potato like on the NES/Genesis.
@@blumbingunit6961 I didn't say anything about PC or console. I agree that this kind of game reminds more of a western RPG that you'd find on a PC, because that's in our mindset since consoles were a Japanese thing, before the Xbox.
That doesn't they could have done something better with it on the NES. I agree that most games on there aren't very complex but hell, we got games that looked more intriguing on the Atari console with their top down adventure style gameplay!
The least open ended game ever. There is only one way to play it, and every item has a specific time to use it, including the health.
I imagine james as a video game superhero and james is his virtual wonderboy
God that "prepare to continue..." music was an audio overload for me hahaha it's so intense and in your face
I remember the Genesis and DOS versions of this game actually. This game is programmed by Will Harvey.
“there’s the door!!!” 🤣 I love watching the game crush your hopes and dreams lol Great video
The Immortal is an adventure game. You have to have an IQ above room temperature to play it.
Seventh Son Eighth Son
Shadowgate, DejaVu, and... Maniac Mansion, which why dabbled in before... would really kick their arse then...
Adventure game a new way to describe shit games?
Keep in mind they didn't play it that long, they had other things to do. And when a game is just trial and error and you have to do it over and over again, it's just shit game design! Even if you played it back then and beat it, that doesn't mean anything, when you had nothing better to do.
The game is quite easy, its just scripted - you notice how easy it is during battle sequences. Its a dark game and fail outside of combat will be rewarded with instant death. But you learn and continue anyways.
The instruction guide does have some tip and tricks to beat this game. I remember I used to look at it and couldn’t decipher it. I was too young to understand the tip and trick part. I remember I too had trouble with this game. To this day I haven’t completed it.
This actually looks like my type of game.
Loved this game as a kid.... sooooo many death animations for a NES game. Yes the game title was ironic
Or you need to be immortal to figure it out
It reminds me of Hero Quest. Loved the Spinal Tap reference also lol best scene in the movie!
Talk about cryptic! I did really enjoy the episode though guys! I had never heard of this game prior to this video. Tough but very interesting. Thanks again guys and have a Happy Holidays!
This game is freaking cool.. stick with it, kids..
I have this game but have never played it.....I think it's going to stay this way 😅
I played it and finished it waaaay back in 1991 I think. I thought the visuals and sound were top notch for a NES game. But I wouldn't have been able to finish the game without Nintendo Power. I'd play it but definitely use a walkthrough because the game is so obtuse. I really like the game but completely understand why people hate it.
Understandable.
But that audio is sooooooooo good when compared to the frequent bleep-bloop audio that was present back then.
stucazzo2000 this is just one of those games where it was acceptable to play during the week. And every day get info from other kids at school.
Or be one of those kids, like I, who enjoy puzzles. And sure it took writing some hints down...but there's no UA-cam, internet, million channels on t.v. or much options to do anything else, soooo...just get to it.
Even today, it can be enjoyable if you put yourself back in that mindset. Just forget that all of these other options exist. Forget you can look up clues, hints and answers and use ONLY paper and pencil and the manual that came with the game.
this was one of the most obscure games i have played when i was on the genesis years ago and didn't know what the name of it was. i remembered the worm and all the other stuff, but i always got my ass handed to me because i was too young to understand how to progress.
Do they not know what incinerated means?
What part of "everything in the room is incinerated" did they not get? xD It even gave them the death/continue dialogue too lol!
So, the message after you read the runes said everything in the room was incinerated. So I'm thinking you died and respawned. I also suspect that that bar on the bottom right of the screen is how you tell if you're going to respawn after falling into a trap or not. I think it's your life bar.
*Why are you dead*
...because incineration means burned up? No... It ALWAYS kills you.... you're incinerated!
Ok, I played Dragon Lair recently I think this game is much better than that.
Dragon's Lair is alright on the NES, at least the PAL version. Only bad thing about it is the whirlwind pit and the final level.
That old wizard is ripped.
At some point in your childhood, you and your friends came together to play for the last time, and none of you knew it.
Beating it was about learning patterns, repeating where you failed and being patient. I will admit I had to track down a guide. Lol.
This is like Solstice meets Dragon's Liar, but with Jekyll & Hide rules.
Loved this game. Speaking of Video Power, I never knew this game made it onto the Genesis but they showed it.
This would've been an awesome AVGN episode... =) (We need more of those.)
This is so nostalgic. I had that issue of Nintendo Power, and my best friend and I went through the same difficulties playing this.
I had that exact isssue and I used to pore over this game. It always looked so cool.
Awesome game on genesis! All the blood and gore made this game! Ole NES censorship sucks haha! Watch a few fight scenes from the genesis version and keep in mind this released before mortal kombat(I’m pretty sure)
Brian Jones heck yeah. Looks decent on nes but gotta play the genesis version to appreciate this one;)
Wizard looks like the Wise Old Man in Runescape. He even has the Staff Of Saradomin... or Staff Of Light
Fight scenes remind of Quest For Glory 2.
Come on, best the game. I would like to see a whole series about you two trying to beat it
How did I miss this one.this games awsome.
I remember renting this as a kid and spazzing pretty hard over it. LMAO You guys got WAY further than I did before I walked to the rental store and chose another game.
This was a very cool game back in the day, and watching you guys play/suck at it brings back many fond memories.
Every time Mike doesn't understand a game,
" _This game is really poorly made._ "
Pretty much
I played this game that a friend borrowed to me. Was tough to beat, but doable. You'll die a lot lol.
My Dad had this game but it was so impossible for me to play as a wee bab that he traded it in for something else.
Been looking for this game based off of essentially a day or tows's worth of memory of it for almost two and a half decades.
There's a specific place where the bait is used to solve a puzzle.
I played the PC version of this game, it's slightly easier to play but in the end you still need a guide.
James and Mike need to play EarthBound. One of my favorite games of all time
To quote every multiplayer game ever: "Git gud."
How can a long time gamer be so blind to such obvious clues..
I had this to the Amiga, I remember that you could swing out of a trapdoor (?)
Genesis version way better, I beat it
I want to see you playing though next levels!
I finally passed this game a few years ago.
i love the fact that for help they go to nintendo power, even when they cheap they are legit
"it might be a good idea to move" sometimes i wonder just how staged some of this is, like, they def wanted to show us that. James cant be that bad lol.
Roy Simmons That's possible since after reading that, you literally have to stand there for like 3 or 4 secs before actually being eaten, its not instant like it appears in the video.
Well, the Angry Video Game Nerd is a character that extrapolated from James himself...
According to the manual you can "swing out" of pit traps
"A pitfall game of bullshit" sums it up quite nicely James
"THE WIZARD GETS INCINERATED" and you guys had any doubts that you were dead?
Lol the enemy's dying is the sounds from altered beast
anyone watching after the avgn episode?
Have you guys played thrilla's surfari? Tough game but I loved it as a kid.
This game is awesome actually
This looks pretty hard but i really like the aesthetic, thanks for showing this to me
No AVGN episode to The Immortal? That's a mine of gold! Go for it...
How did they not understand that the incantation incinerated then instantly? It always kills them.
Additionally I have never played this game but when they fall down a pit, their wizard is very obviously hanging on to his staff as it is keeping him from falling down the hole. Can’t they just climb out? Did they ever try that?
I finally got to play this game thanks to Nintendo adding it to NES Online,
And I played the whole game not knowing that you can actually mash A or B to jump back out of the holes. lol
