    I'm often asked if the cruise ship will really leave the port without you. See for yourself.

    I’ve never been on a cruise. But my aunt has told me stories about people missing the ship. She told me that people were actually jumping up and down screaming 😱. She thought it was hilarious 😂. I’m still trying to figure out why people don’t heed the warnings about being left behind when the cruise lines are so strict about departure times. I’d make sure to be back way before it’s time for the ship to leave. That’s just common sense.

      If you are really special, you would have your own million dollar yacht, not be sardined with 2,000 other people. But yes, we can be sure that when they got home they told everyone they know that the cruise line fucked them over, they will never use them again, and no one else should too, etc.

    I work as a officer on a cruise ship, so here is some insight. Think of it in context of an airliner, just how long should one wait and inconvenience the other passengers, throw off the plan for the ship to be on schedule and generate thousands in costs that will be passed on to other guests down the line. For a couple of unthinking fools to be careless or naive enough to let this happen to them is in no way the cruise ships fault and shouldn't effect other passengers who made it back on time.

      I work as a casino dealer so I can't work while we're in port. I love watching for these idiots and laugh at them (not in uniform, mind you). There is a lot of money needed to fire up the engines, or stop them, and docking fees to be paid if you return. Eventually they'll realize that their passports left with the ship.

      My son is at USAFA and was about to come home for the first time in 6 months for the holidays. The ticket was over 800$ round trip! Well they cancelled the very bus he needed a half hour before he was supposed to leave to take him from base to the airport. Cabs and Ubers aren't allowed on base. So he had to full on sprint with just a backpack and leave his suitcase the few miles to the gate for the Uber, pay the almost hundred bucks for the fair to Denver. He called the airline and told them what was going on and they said someone would meet him at security and they would do all that they could to get him home. He was about 10 mins late for the flight after all said and done but they waited. They didn't have to and we didn't expect them to is the difference between my son and these people. Even though he was powerless over his situation he wouldn't have thrown a fit and blamed them. He would have just called home, we would have rallied resources and got him another flight (we aren't wealthy by any means so it would have been hard but we would have made it happen) but I am forever grateful to Frontier Airlines and the way they handled the situation that day and the way they took care of my future pilot❤

    on our 1st cruise we were in Honduras for a ship-sponsored outing. the 3 dry creek beds we crossed to get to the event (which was partly shortened because of rain) became raging rivers on the return. there were 3 buses of cruisers from 2 different cruise lines. We were 2 hours late getting to the tender & back to the ship. This taught me to only go with cruise sponsored outings.

    First off its not like a bus where you can just stop and "pull over". It takes time to re-dock and lower the ramp. Ships are like planes. The longer the ship is at dock the longer they lose money. Just like planes. If you miss your departure time that's on you. They have a schedule to keep.

Now they have to pay for walk-up airfare to the next stop. They are probably so dumb they did not bother to take their passports with them. ALWAYS have your passport with you when you leave a ship. And make pix of the picture page of your passport, including all numbers and words. Any Embassy can obtain a special temporary passport for travel within a few hours. Without that it take weeks - all at your expense for lodging and food.

    The ship should never wait for the passengers, it should leave on time. In a slightly related story, i was on a cruise in the Mediterranean and we stopped in Civitavecchia to visit Rome for a day. We loaded onto a bus from the cruise ship for our excursion into Rome but one couple that was scheduled for the tour could not be found. The cruise guides held the bus for ~40 minutes until they found that couple. What ensued was our annoyed guide dragging us through Rome as fast as she could for the rest of the day. Rome is a busy place and we were also scheduled to visit the Vatican that day. In order to avoid the long lines going into the Vatican we had a scheduled entry time for our group. At some points we were literally running to make up time. When we exited the Vatican into Rome our guide was once again trying to rush us to make up time. We were done and informed her that we were stopping to rest and getting some gelato from the cart right outside of the St. Peters Square. She stood there pacing around for 15 minutes with a ticked off look on her face while we sat on the curb and ate our gelato. The satisfaction of finally doing what we wanted was the best part of the entire visit to Rome. THIS is why you don't make everyone else wait!

    I have a rule on a cruise, whatever time they tell you to get back on the ship(let's say 6PM) I say to myself right aim to get back on the ship between 5-5.30, to allow yourself an extra window and enough time to get back to the ship(this also allows you for any kind of possible delay), we did a big cruise last year and on the last stop(gribralter) the time to get back on the ship is quite tight(9-1.30) especially if you do your own thing and go up to the rock, well we didn't plan our timings too well and went through town for a while and the. tryed to go to the cable car to go up to the top, the queue was quite long and the time was already 11.30, so we abandoned the attempt as I was too worried about time, we walked back and it's quite a walk back due to the route you have to take, as it's not quite a direct walk back,we didn't get back to the ship till 12.45,Sadly 2 people were left as they didn't make it back in time, they waited 30 mins extra too.never be late people, not worth it

  • @JuanGarcia-zq5tp
    @JuanGarcia-zq5tp 7 років тому +40

    A ship with thousands of passengers cannot wait for 2 people. They tell you when you disembark at what time you must be back, even the shore excursion pamphlets say it in bold letters. You can't do everything while at a port so plan wisely.

    I caught the last tender one night, when I was on a cruise, and that cured me of being late! Cruise ships have ports to make on a schedule because there are many people who are expecting them, personnel whose job it is to tend to the ship, e.g., on-load supplies, etc.. It's just very rude to be late, because it affects everyone on board the ship! Then the Captain has to try to make up time and that could be dangerous! They may sail according to the weather expected on routes as well as at their ports.

    It's just like those people who check in late for a flight. The aircraft might still be sitting on the tarmac but once the flight status is closed there's a whole lot of cabin and cockpit procedures that have to be gone through. To open up the flight again would mean cancelling all of those procedures and having to start all over again which could result in a delay of several hours. Accidents happen, but there are those people who think the rules don't apply to them and as long as they get what they want they don't care about the inconvenience they've caused to everyone else. I think it's great to see this type of person come unstuck, and I hope the learn a lesson for the future!

      I took too the trip from Cozumel to Chichen Itza which I think is probably one of the longest excursions that you can take on a cruise ship. From what I understand they are the first off and the last back on the ship yet there were STILL people who got back after us. It was ridiculous. Cozumel seems to have an inordinate number of peer runners. I'm not sure if that's because people take the ferry to Playa Del Carmen or the all you can drink beach clubs or what exactly goes on in Cozumel that makes people miss the departure.

      No these people do not have e excursions, because if you have an excursion the boat will wait for you. The ship knows who has an excursion on the island that is why some times they wait and than like this case they do not.

    You are an adult, you have to learn to be at work at time, be at church on time, be back to the ship on time. They give you 30 minutes grace. If you miss the boat, you miss the boat!!! It cost money to run a ship, those cost have to be passed onto the passengers, is it fair for them to pay for this couple who don't know how to be on time? Some ports may have a pilot boat that may get them to the ship but that can be dangerous, more so for an over weight person, even that cost extra money. Otherwise they have to fly home, or fly to the next port of call. Plenty to do on ship, if you don't know how to use a watch.

  • @Oakleaf700

    SURELY the passengers are aware of the departure..time and tide wait for no man [or woman] and WHY should a ship have to hang about waiting? if passengers knew ships would wait, they would take huge advantage.

    Yes, that is exactly how it is.
    Of course there's this scenario:
    The passengers were on the ship's excursion.
    The excursion ended and dropped them off near or at the port an hour before the departure time.
    The passengers were too busy taking photos (or whatever) and just missed their ship.

    Well if your on a Royal Caribbean Cruise shore excursion and you take a shore excursion through Royal Caribbean and the tour is delayed they will wait for you or if the tour is broken down they will wait for you. Now if you off on your own like St. martin and you go off and do lets say the Yoday Guy Movie exhibit in St Martin. The Ship will not wait for you to return because your not doing anything through Royal Caribbean cruise line. its your responsibility to get back to Florida or where every you cruise out of.
    One word of advice Never ever fly in the day of the cruise. Some people make the mistakes in flying in the day of the cruise and get stuck because of weather or mechanical issue. Please if you go on a cruise fly in the day before, get a hotel room then find out how early you can board it does not mean you can get into your cabin until after 1pm on some cruises that depart at 4 or 4:30pm Maybe consider purchasing a one way car that you can drop off at the rental car place and pick up when you get back into port.

      We flew down in January the day before because I was afraid with the winter weather our flight could be cancelled. I also paid for another night in a hotel flying home the day after our cruise was over because I was afraid I wouldn't make it to the airport in time (my sister and brother in law cut it really close making their flight due to other passengers not showing up when paged to depart the ship). I was much more relaxed and not afraid of missing any deadlines that way.

    I worked on Carnival ships. In my first contract I was late 2 minutes (that was half an hour before the ship's departure). I was lucky I didn't get a warning, because I was new. So for the crew even one minute late is big deal, and that is a minute late from the time that you are supposed to be back on board, not when the ship leaves.

    Disney Cruise Line will wait if, IF, you use their shore excursions. Happened in '08 when we were leaving Acapulco. Bus blew a tire in the boonies. Ship was to leave at 2 pm to get in the queue for the Panama Canal. 2:10 and no movement. Went to the rail and one ramp was still from ship to dock and Disney staff pacing around. Finally, at 2:45 the bus showed up, the passengers raced through the screening tent and onto the Magic. Ramp up and, if he could, the captain would have laid rubber.

    It IS possible that they had a transportation problem getting back, like a taxi with a flat tire or something, but once the boat is under power you've missed it. I've seen enough of these vids now that I wouldn't panic, I would just get on the phone and call the cruise company and set up how to get to the next port of call - or home. Better leave room on your credit card.

    They have deadlines and company rules. The captain can only wait so long before he runs afoul of one or another. And sometimes it's the port, itself, with that dock contracted to another ship beginning at a certain time.

    Unless we are on a ship sponsored excursion, we are always back on board a full hour before the recommended time. Sometimes the pilot boat will run people along side who miss the ship. But, I've been told it can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars for them to do it. DON'T BE LATE.

  • @MikeBaxterABC
    @MikeBaxterABC 6 років тому +5

    3:00 ... at THAT point the time to stop, reverse engines, re-dock, drop tie ropes, winch in, deploy the gangplank (all as per mandatory government regulations) would probably take another 40 minutes at minimum, THEN they had to 'steam' at full speed to the next port, depending on how far it is, it could cost TENS of thousands of dollars in additional fuel to go full speed, never mind double docking fees, etc.
    My opinion is the ship should leave EXACTLY to the SECOND of departure time in all cases, this would teach future excursionists to be on time.

    @Wild1995 The problem is that if the ship was scheduled to leave at 4PM all passengers were told to be back on board much earlier. The 4PM time was the pulling away from the dock time, the last call before the gangway is pulled up would have been at least 15 min, and on some lines 30 min, earlier. So at 4Pm they were already 15 to 30 min late.
