As a girl that likes cute-looking tech this is the first emulation handheld that has truly caught my eye, and the fact that it’s easy to use right out of the box is also awesome. If they ever make a second version of this handheld I’ll get it, just cause I never like getting version one of ANYTHING 😅
That's smart. I feel you on the cute factor for sure, I'm very tempted. The next iteration of this specific design is either coming in about 3 months or will never show up again, and the concept itself will probably be deprecated by a product that will be announced by Anbernic within the next month. It's a very strange industry lol.
It might be worth just waiting to see if the later units down the line have the screen bleed thing all sorted out? These handheld companies usually produce their devices in batches with fixes and other small tweaks being added to each batch. If they can fix it in later batches it's probably worth getting. They make new handhelds all the time though so might bring out a V2 in a year or so? Then again they've been making handhelds for years so no real reason to hold off on this aside from the screen bleed issue being fixed!
I got my unit and it had huge light bleed, but I am not a famous youtuber so when I approached Anbernic to ask for a replacement they said no. They also replied to me that IPS screens are like this and will mostly have some light bleed.
That sucks. I hate it when they say 'ow it's a common thing in these type of screens'. I don't care, I paid for a base unit! My LOC laptop, 4060, has pretty meh light bleed. Tried contacting support - same thing.
That sucks. I was extremely fortunate to get a unit without light bleed or other issues. I really didn't realize how much of a dice roll I was making ordering this.
What was happening with SNES games initially there was probably the emulator defaulting to the SNES' internal 8:7 aspect ratio. Many people don't know this, but the Super Nintendo was not actually natively 4:3, instead, it used a taller, almost square 8:7 aspect ratio that gets squished by 4:3 displays. So, if you want don't want as much letterboxing and a bigger display size, you can probably leave the aspect ratio as is because it's not actually stretched.
@@R1SKbreaker It's a home console: it was designed for 4:3 because that was ubiquitous at the time. What could you possibly be talking about saying it wasn't designed for the displays it was intended to display on? Only refresh rate varied by region, not aspect ratio.
@@Phoenixflame87 Check out Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Link to the Past. Circles will actually be circles in 8:7. Except in the title screen for LttP where the Triforce is only a perfect triangle in 4:3. So yeah, several are ideal for 8:7 rather than 4:3. It's a case by case basis. Check it out. Aspect ratio are sometimes a bit different in different regions as well. Found that out when finding out what aspect ratios to use for the RGB30.
@@R1SKbreaker I think a link to the past is actually a perfect example of why it WAS designed for 4:3 regardless of the circle test. and that any imperfect circles are only that way as a result of the mathematical calculations for circles for whatever tool was used. 4:3 monitors were what was used with the system. And also what they used when they tested these games. They put more effort on the title screen because it was the title screen was up front and a LttP was an early title. Oblong circles all over the games just means that they weren't bothered to adjust the software to account for the internal 8:7 resolution. Which some companies and games did do later on -- or were just drawn by hand.
i wasnt sold on the 1:1 screen idea, but now i can see the potential, ds and 3ds fits surprisingly well on it. As long as it has a decent resolution and size, i can see this screen becoming more common.
hey, the triggers are definitely analog. you can confirm this in the included gamepad tester app. it has a graphic that shows the analog triggers tracking to 100% pressed down. that said, i was also unable to get dolphin to pick that input up at all as for PS2, i’ve had great performance so far, tho i’m using emulation station launching Aether in standalone. Hulk Ultimate Destructions runs perfectly
To get the analog triggers to work you have to switch the controller mode to Xbox, I don't know why anbernic hasn't fixed it but it was the same issue with the 556. Great video as always.
The same menu also has options for Only Button, Only Trigger, and Both, which refers to how the analog triggers register to your app. I think Dolphin expects Only Trigger.
Well, the RGB30 is actually the same exact square screen (not even same size, it’s literally the exact same screen panel from the same manufacturer), it’s just got a bit of a chin for the bottom screen bezel.
The RGB30 doesn’t get enough credit, it’s a fantastic device. The 1:1 screen is perfect for 16-bit retro systems and older, and more importantly Pico 8! 😁
@@jodijohnson3488 keep in mind the new rgb30sx, the vertical version with the same screen. i got the rgb30, and its a little awkward to hold. i think the sx seems better ergonomically, but not as pocketable.
@@jodijohnson3488 I bought one a month ago and i'm loving it. The build quality is a bit cheap, you will need to turn it off after playing because sleep mode drains battery, and you will need to install ArkOS and do some tinkering to get the most out of the heavier consoles, but when you get there, it's fantastic. The screen is better than some official console screens like the switch or PSP, the square aspect ratio looks great on old consoles scaling to 8:7, Nintendo DS looks amazing like was shown in this video and Dreamcast - my favorite console - runs flawlessly.
@@_mattbailey One of the best reasons to buy it is the Neo Geo Pocket and Pocket color. Those systems are super expensive and were 1:1. Great way to experience those systems without having to shell out a few hundred bucks to get a console and mod it to a useable standard.
you can literally emulate any emulator on it. There is no need for anything else at the moment. I pretty much shelved my switch because of how well the switch emulation has worked for me.
If only the form factor of the deck were a little smaller. I really have issues with the size, unfortunately, and I'm really hoping for a slimed Deck 2 or a Deck Lite at some point. Otherwise, all of you are correct, imo, the Deck performs well and efficient with pretty much everything there is to emulate ^^
You need something smaller because the steam deck is f****** massive but other than that I get what you're saying. At the moment I'm still willing to use my 3DS XL new version but I have been contemplating getting a retro handheld. Honestly mainly because I don't like the d-pad placement on the 3DS.
10:10 Try setting the triggers to "Both", I suspect that's the issue, if it's not set to "both" it'll only work as either a trigger or a button (whatever's selected), and some games just don't work when the trigger's are selected as the "wrong" one.
Its just a wii and gamecube scenario, where basically the wii is basically a gamecube but with kaioken from dragon ball. What I mean is like the RG405V and the RG Cube are literally the same but with a slight boost.
We need an Android flip console with a large 4:3 screen, like 7 inches, with a mini version of 6 perhaps. 7 inches in 4:3, for example, allows a 6.5 inch 16:9, while a 7 inch 16:9 screen only allows 5.7 in 4:3. Another point is that a 4:3 flip allows for a smaller size, in this 7 inch example it would only need approximately 16cm, it still fits in your pocket... if it is a 6 inch version then around 14cm. The idea of the flip does not exclude the desire for horizontal consoles with larger 4:3 screens, just the flip allows for a much larger screen without increasing to the sides, in addition to better ergonomics. I just received mine today. It’s safe to say the screen looks good. Very impressed. I might pick up another color. The white with the rainbow buttons awesome! 😊
Straight up young lad, at first I thought you were clinically insane, but then in a moment of weakness, I actually ordered one of these. It's a bloody amazing handheld. Period.
I want one of these so bad. 1:1 aspect ratio displays are cool. I love it on my RGB30. Would love that but more powerful. I think if I got one, I'd use it solely for GameCube, Wii, and DS/3DS and leave the GB family, SNES, etc. for my RG35XXSP. Gonna wait for a potential sale and the 2nd batch so I don't get the bad screen though.
All I really want from months ago is a RP4 with left stick on top... But aside from the square screen gimmick, this one is commendable. The price is very competitive and the RGB is a very nice touch.
I wished they updated the SNES controller version, that thing is easily my favorite form factor of ANY OF THESE. Next being the Retroid FLIP with a 8gen2/3 would be awesome. Clearly Anbernic/Retroid/Ayn are all the same company so do it guys.
Yeah that one looks cool. Especially the one with the "stereo sound" thing on the border of the screen. Just doesn't make sense to buy one though with all the other handhelds I already have. Like it would have to be more powerful than the 405m I already have.
I bought the cube and the Arc. The Cube is better for GB, Pico and the newer consoles, but the SNES and Genesis are just at home on the arc. The only handheld that feels as comfortable as the Arc ist the 2DS.
Want a new flip with same processor or better than rp4, bigger screen (nothing less than 5in) and in my dream world would have a second screen. Would be a day one purchase, only other one I have done was Steamdeck which is still holding out for decent windows joystick support.
I have basically no use case for this but for some reason I just find the design irresistibly charming and really want one lol. I think I'll hold off until Anbernic does a revision though, or it's confirmed that future batches are fully fixed with the light bleed issue.
1:1 screens are the way to go for retro handhelds, it just makes so much sense for multi-system devices, when I finally see a handheld with an OLED 6 inch 1:1 display, I'll jump on it, 6 inches would mean nice real-estate sizes for pretty much any aspect, even stacked DS/3DS displays, I suppose the ultimate handheld would consist of a 7-8 inch 1:1 SAMOLED with up to 120Hz, 500+ PPI, an FPGA+ARM hybrid SoC plus a healthy pool of SRAM & SDRAM, a good Wolfson DAC & HP-AMP (32ohm), a fat 5watt single speaker (much better than dual 2watt speakers), and hall effect analogies/triggers, micro-switch buttons and bumpers, and a hybrid 4/8-Way switchable D-Pad (toggle between rollable 8-way mode & 4-way micro-switch mode), the FPGA would be for low latency systems up to 5th gen, the ARM for everything else, the FPGA can be used as an I/O processor when using the ARM CPU, for audio processing and video DAC duties including scaling and shaders/scanlines/etc, that would be the crem'da'la'crem handheld, I'd use Replay OS using the FPGA for really accurate CRT emulation in conjunction with DynaRes 2.0.
Thsnk you for uploading these videos in HDR so we can really get an accurate sense of the colors and brightness of rhe displays (and rgb) on these devices
For SNES I would just turn off integer scaling and use a shader. I always change the video driver to Vulcan in Retroarch and choose a slang shader called CRT Consumer. With a few tweaks it makes everything look great and really blends the pixels together.
I removed the Anbernic launcher on my RG556 and installed ES-DE to have a much nicer experience. Personally between this Cube and the 556 (given they're basically the same spec, although PS2 performs MUCH better on my 556 than in this video) I'd go for the widescreen OLED display over this any day. And doesn't seem to be on your recommendations list at all... 🤔
Still waiting for an emulation device with 6 face buttons that have like a screen or something behind them to change the labels for optimal Sega and N64 play experience
Horrible aspect ratio, as you said not for everyone. 4 by 3 is still the best for that "level" of retro games. Maybe if you throw PS2, Wii and Switch games into the mix, 16 by 9 or 16:10 would be better.
For SNES, try using a 'sharp-bilinear-simple' shader to fill out the whole screen in 4:3. It will give you balanced pixels with only a slight reduction in sharpness.
The design gives me Gizmondo vibes, I like it. The screen is a pretty useful aspect ratio and the performance is pretty good, definitely a good different in this case.
The T820 can run a ton of PS2 and Wii games without a problem, and a lot of those games can do 4:3 resolution which should look really great on a 1:1 screen. It seems like the only game he tried was Burnout (did he even adjust any of the settings in Aether?) and then proclaims "Don't get it for PS2!". Like...what? Seriously?
I think I like this not just because of the upgrade in hardware compared to the RGB30, but those ergonomics! Member of the big hand club here, and that brick is not the best after a few hours.
If they put that d-pad on the top, that would be an immediate purchase for me. Like it’s cool to have the later game options, but I would rather have older games with that screen. Such a cool device though…
I guess Im late to this party because when I did a search today for this device they have it in 3 colors, white, smoke black, and blue, out of all the handhelds this one really caught my eyes
absolutely love the was this thing looks, dont think i’ll ever justify spending so much on a device like this tho (i think the price is reasonable, just more than id be comfortable spending)
also, the more i play on my Switch, the more i appreciate that everyone else adds the Bumps so you can have extra grip, still baffles me that the only time Nintendo tried it was for the Wii U Gamepad
Call me crazy, but I’d kinda like to see Anbernic, Retroid, and all these other retro handheld companies offer games exclusive to their specific platforms. And I’ve got two big reasons as to why… 1. Being able to emulate older games and hardware might be their main selling point for retro gaming enthusiasts, but it’s not really gonna win over the average person who also wants *new* games to play. Especially when the hardware of these handheld consoles are similar enough to be considered borderline interchangeable. 2. Retro emulation in and of itself, while not illegal, is still heavily frowned upon by most major game publishers, especially Nintendo. And considering that they’ve been on a legal killing spree as of late - they got one of the biggest ROM sites shut down just a month or so ago - I think it would be wise for these retro handheld manufacturers to invest their money into original IPs so that they have an exit plan if and/or when Nintendo (and other publishers) decide to make it impossible to download their old ROMs from anything that isn’t their own online services.
Years of watching these video - I feel like one day I will buy one of these devices. There always ends up being a few different reasons I talk myself out of it. Still waiting for the one...
I would love a version of this which ran Linux so I could run Pico8 and Portmaster on it. But the ergonomics of this are really appealing to me as someone who’s hand cramp up after too much play.
When I saw this, I thought it looked stupid. What sold me on it was 3/ds emulation. It's a great screen for that. On my Odin 2, I didn't like any of the screen layouts and it didn't feel right. I'd rather have used my ds flashcart. The more I see of this, the more I like. I'm probably going to pick this up since I was looking for a smaller device that was not the Odin 2 mini and this is less than half the price.
Now THIS is what I was talking about. The Ayn Odin 2 Mini with its PS Vita design is more attractive to me than this (sorry Bob, this weird retro design doesn't do much for me), but at $180 this is a FAR more appealing device. I don't want to pay $400 to play Gamecube on the go, but sub-$200? That's a much better value for price to me. I might actually pick one of these up. Maybe.
Ive seen multiple videos mentioning and showing backlight bleed on the screen of this thing. That's my big hesitation. I had backlight bleed on an rg405v and it made me return it.
TakiUdon has a great video covering the screen bleed issue. and it comes from the pogo pins that connect the wifi card to the antennas. Edit: The pink is like dogdick pink. No one wants that. I mean it is a very "RETRO" 90s interpretation of pink. BUT STILL very much dogdick pink.
im really new to these handhelds, is it safe to play while charging like the nintendo switch or will that damage the battery? I only ask because i've seen a few videos saying the play time can be as low as 2 hours with more demanding games so i was planning on having it plugged in for long play sessions
Got mine today. Ordered day one from AliExpress and I don't have any light bleed. May have gotten lucky but hopefully there aren't many affected units out there.
Got mine Sunday. It has some lightbleed at the top, but not extreme. I'm still not a fan of Android on these compared to ArkOS on the Powkiddy RGB30, but I like to tinker, so I'll figure it out. I would recommend the RGB30 over the RG Cube for most people interested in this. It's much cheaper.
Did you have it on NS mode while playing GC? Cause remember joycons don't have analog r2l2, so maybe that's the issue why dolphin didn't detect analog input?
Can't wait for the next one to come out in like 3 weeks

I bought the cube and the Arc. The Cube is better for GB, Pico and the newer consoles, but the SNES and Genesis are just at home on the arc. The only handheld that feels as comfortable as the Arc ist the 2DS.
Want a new flip with same processor or better than rp4, bigger screen (nothing less than 5in) and in my dream world would have a second screen. Would be a day one purchase, only other one I have done was Steamdeck which is still holding out for decent windows joystick support.
@@corysmith2570 Those SLIDERS on the Retroid FLIP, while not PERFECT, were amazingly better than they had a right to be.
I have basically no use case for this but for some reason I just find the design irresistibly charming and really want one lol. I think I'll hold off until Anbernic does a revision though, or it's confirmed that future batches are fully fixed with the light bleed issue.
I love the fact that you always point out the laziness of Anbernic when it come to firmware
I don't really retro game but i love that people/companies come up with this stuff.
Taki Udon made a video explaining a possibil fix for the light bleed. In fact he's the first UA-camr I watched that even mentioned the light bleed.
I bought one a few hours after they released it and my screen looks fine, no bleed whatsoever. Seems like a case by case basis.
2:11 - Bob doing the buster charge-jump ADHD shuffle, like a real Mega Man veteran. I see you, Bob!
I tried out a friends recently and I was really impressed.
If this was a little bit more powerful to run GC, PS2 and 3ds more comfortably, it would be the perfect small mid range device.
For SNES I would just turn off integer scaling and use a shader.
I always change the video driver to Vulcan in Retroarch and choose a slang shader called CRT Consumer. With a few tweaks it makes everything look great and really blends the pixels together.
Btw for gameboy and gameboy advance I recommend going to scalefx and try to get a filter that basically makes the pixels look like balls.
Best gameboy performance yet
🤣
@@Two49 he’s not wrong tho
Horrible aspect ratio, as you said not for everyone. 4 by 3 is still the best for that "level" of retro games. Maybe if you throw PS2, Wii and Switch games into the mix, 16 by 9 or 16:10 would be better.
For SNES, try using a 'sharp-bilinear-simple' shader to fill out the whole screen in 4:3. It will give you balanced pixels with only a slight reduction in sharpness.
12:25 have you tried integer scaling OFF and the sharp-bilinear shader?
Cool! I really like your films, especially Cyborg and Double Impact!👍
This might be one the first videos ive seen(besides screen demos) with HDR👍
If you have an nvidia GPU you can also enable AI HDR on all videos, which looks just as good
@@Phantomdude thanks for the tip but I have a 7900xt 😭 maybe I should have got the 4070s
Shout out the the air fan gamecube controller in that one shot towards the end.
@14:00 "The 35XX SP does not do that" it does, you just need to save the retroarch settings to core or content directory
It looks like a perfect device to get for someone I know who's a novice for them to enjoy so I'll recommend this to them. Thanks for the video.
I love that 3DS games (some of them) can work on this kind of device! It looks great for this kind of screen.
Man idk why i keep watching these emulator thingy videos im not gonna buy another one...but ima keep watchin
I'd love to stay home from work with Bob, drink Dr. Pepper, and play Burnout Revenge for the PS2
Thank you Bob I love lunch videos
lol eating my lunch to this
Love the HDR upload.
If they put that d-pad on the top, that would be an immediate purchase for me. Like it’s cool to have the later game options, but I would rather have older games with that screen. Such a cool device though…
Ohhh I love the pink one :)
my cube is on its way boy i hope this review is good
every day Bob uploads is a great day
rgb30 runs pico8 games natively. I would like to see something similar on Cube.
If this also supported SIM cards it would replace my phone instantly. I do miss the out-of-the-box 2000s phone designs sometimes.
every year we get closer to the portable console of my dreams. I dont mind waiting a few more years until that happens.
I guess Im late to this party because when I did a search today for this device they have it in 3 colors, white, smoke black, and blue, out of all the handhelds this one really caught my eyes
As soon as you said $160 I was like nope and then the screen/quality issues that's a nope for me 😕 but I would have liked an aluminum for that price.
absolutely love the was this thing looks, dont think i’ll ever justify spending so much on a device like this tho
(i think the price is reasonable, just more than id be comfortable spending)
also, the more i play on my Switch, the more i appreciate that everyone else adds the Bumps so you can have extra grip, still baffles me that the only time Nintendo tried it was for the Wii U Gamepad
with a screen of that resolution, uneven pixel scaling can be taken care of with a sharp bilinear interpolation shader
The RG Cube should be buffed in size to be good enough to have good triggers.
Call me crazy, but I’d kinda like to see Anbernic, Retroid, and all these other retro handheld companies offer games exclusive to their specific platforms.
And I’ve got two big reasons as to why…
Just bought mine last week, pretty much solely for Vertical Shootem Ups.
Pico-8 through Winlator works really perfectly on this.
I would love a version of this which ran Linux so I could run Pico8 and Portmaster on it. But the ergonomics of this are really appealing to me as someone who’s hand cramp up after too much play.
Great video as always man ❤
When I saw this, I thought it looked stupid.
I'd love if it had an hmdi out. That would turn it into a crazy good travel companion.
I started with an ROG Ally, great device but it's huge. Now I'm waiting for my rg35xxsp. Now i feel like i need this. I'm getting hooked.
The PowKiddy RGB 30 is also a 1:1 720x720 device...
Same screen, in fact. Same manufacturer
Instead of turning touch sounds off entirely, you can also turn the volume down of the button sounds by turning down the Notifications Volume.
If you want Analog Triggers on the RG556 and RG-Cube you have to switch it to Xbox Mode.
Since this can emulate 3DS then I recommend trying to emulate minecraft 3DS Edition, (it's a way to play minecraft but shittier)
Can't it run Android Minecraft?
@@kayonji yeah but why not?
@@SansINess53 Can't argue with that!
I'm definitely down with the cuboid lil guy, I decided I am going to get one (later) the moment I saw it
TakiUdon has a great video covering the screen bleed issue. and it comes from the pogo pins that connect the wifi card to the antennas.
Any modern Android device is safe to use while charging.
Wulf..at 10:10 you mention that the analogue trigger isnt working. Earlier in the video you changed the settings for the triggers to be digital.
actually the right aspect ratio for SNES is not 4:3 but 8:7, so it will actually fit almost perfectly in a 1:1 screen
Did you have it on NS mode while playing GC? Cause remember joycons don't have analog r2l2, so maybe that's the issue why dolphin didn't detect analog input?
At first I didn’t really like how it looked but it kinda grew on me. If I was to get a new handheld emulator the cube would probably be it
There's just so many of these. So many options XD
