I know it has been said before, but I think it bears repeating: I really appreciate that your background for your videos is the drafting mat. Being able to immediately know how one device compares to another in terms of size even when they aren't on screen next to each other, uniformly across all of your videos is amazing.

For someone new to emulation the Miyoo Mini Plus was perfect for me. Very easy to set up, tonnes of community support, and it's so cheap you can tinker with it and not care about making a mistake. I will end up moving on to a more powerful and comfortable device at some point, but I cant recommend it enough for newbies like myself.

Thanks Russ! I'm buying a handheld for a friend - a vet who is stuck in the VA hospital for a couple months. He's going to have a long road to recovery as he's losing his leg from the knee down. He's no stranger to this kind of thing having already lost parts of both feet. Anyway, I wanted to get him something to help stave off his boredom but also something that wouldn't be too expensive, in case it gets stolen while he's at his many imaging and PT appointments. So I'm going to pick up a Powkiddy X55 for him and load it up with ROMs and set it up following your guides. So, thanks for your efforts here and for all the good info you put out, and thanks for indirectly helping a vet. For being a Navy guy, you're alright! I'll be sure to let him know - he's a salty old ground pounder.

I got a couple of these!
RG35XX-H has a rock solid build quality. I got the Plus too, the battery and the shoulder buttons are just rattling around in the body. I really love muOS on these devices.
On the Powkiddy side, I really want to like my RGB30 but the dpad is very creaky and the battery indicator is pretty much unusable. Still the best for PICO-8. The X55 is a bit nicer but the CFW development is uncertain at the moment. I have a bug with latest JELOS where audio breaks every time I put it in sleep mode.
My favorite is the RG505 right now, it's even cheaper than the RP2S from Aliexpress. I actually prefer Android for the great sleep mode and Bluetooth audio. Also takes charge from a type C charger no problem.
I also keep an RG Nano with me all the time, does what it's supposed to do pretty well.
So my favorites: RG Nano, RG35XX-H, RG505

      What's the battery like?

    • @VerlixStone
      @VerlixStone 7 місяців тому +2

@@HarryVerolme For GBA games easily 6+ hours on a single full charge. PS1 3hrs this also depends on if it is a full 3D title or not. NeoGeo can be a bit more intense but again it depends on the title but 3hrs+ for sure. Anything lower spec then what I mentioned can easily get you some more. If you leave your house on a full charge you have nothing to worry about. You literally have access to most of the greatest handled titles to ever exist in your pocket with an absolutely beautiful screen. And if the Plus ends up being too big for your taste the Mini version is still fantastic more so if you just want to play GBA games as those mainly just use the front facing buttons. The biggest issue with the non plus version of the Mini is that the trigger buttons are very unconformable to use for long periods of time so heavy action games are not the best on it, but RPG's are perfect. I personally have one of each since I love it so much, but the Plus overall is the best pick because its feature list is much greater with the addition of Wifi.

Great to see the Miyoo Mini Plus still getting so much love. After 6 months, my Mini Plus is still my go-to device for gaming on the go. I recently ended up in the hospital for just under a week, and as I was checking my backpack to see what I had packed in that could keep me occupied, I found my Miyoo Mini Plus conveniently tucked in one of my side pockets. It was a great long-term cure for boredom.
Also, I’m glad to see the TrimUI Smart Pro getting recommended too. I know it gets flak for its nubby joysticks and L2 and R2 trigger buttons, but as a fighting game enthusiast, it’s the perfect handheld for me, especially with how many arcade fighting games I can play with Final Burn Neo. And the battery life is amazing. I only have to charge it up once a week with the way I play it.

The RGB-35XX+H is what I've been asking for over 2 years. Basically the same as the Anbernic RG353m but in a better body (lightweight retro plastic) and at an acceptable price. Recently been on a big sale for around USD $30 from Amazon.
      It's impossible to beat.
A distant second is the Retroid Pocket 2S which is $90 firm without discount sales. It offers the best price to performance (besides the above when on sale).
And if you value Quality over Quantity, you only have room for a single Retro Handheld. Well the choice is easy. It's the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. It's just barely pocketable and comfortable. And it's slightly cheaper than the competition whilst giving you much better support, software, build, and everything else.
But if you don't want to pocket these, so that you're carrying around a backpack. Well there's a couple options. The cheapest being the AYN Odin2, a fine choice. For a bit more money, there's the Base SteamDeck that's used or refurbished. For some more money there is the Brand New Valve SteamDeck OLED, cannot recommend enough. And for slightly more money there is the ASUS ROG Ally, which gives you a bit extra on top. And for a lot more money and inconvenience, but for those that money-is-no-object, well the Top Dog is the GPD Win-Max-3 with the latest AI chipset (Zen 8740u) and a usable mini keyboard to replace your tablet or ultrabook.
      My recommendation?
Find out what you want first, then secondly look at your budget. If you cannot afford it now, it might be better to skip it and save up for it, rather than compromise. I recommend for a healthy balance get the most expensive Retroid with the cheapest SteamDeck. You'll have a blast either outdoors or indoors. For me personally it's different though.

AliExpress had them on two cheap for their anniversary sale recently which I'm waiting for delivery on.
Batocera seems like a good way to go with it.

The Powkiddy V90 is hands-down the best value option. In my opinion it pretty much eliminates the sub $90 market for $30. I think for most people the Retroid Pocket 2s is going to be good enough for almost everything with little compromise.
    So I view as :
    Low budget: Powkiddy V90
Mid budget: Retroid Pocket 2S (or flip)
Large budget: Steam Deck / Ayn Odin 2

I definitely considered the V90, I even spent some time updating the firmware and re-testing all my favorite systems. But the slight screen tearing, unintuitive user interface, and poor pixel scaling kept it off my list. I think it's amazing what the community has done with it over the years, but I'd rather spend $10 more for the R36S to alleviate those minor issues (albeit in a much larger form factor).

Thank you for your work. Ended up ordering myself Triumui Smart Pro. In my experience devices that are premium for their price in everything but software but are being improved over time by both creators and community are usually ending up as the best pick in the long run. Investing in a newer, less popular than the usual suspects company feels right, too, and it does look like they want to improve their devices even post-launch instead of dishing out "plus" versions every four months. More competition is always better for both the consumer and for the niche.

the funny thing is, I just bought the M17 handheld (v3) from the Aliexpress spring sale almost on a lark because it was so cheap with the discounts; ended up paying $30 with free shipping, and it got to my place in about 5 days. i don’t like the version of Emuelec that it comes with because of the fact that you can barely tinker with it, which is what I like doing with Emuelec. *sadface*
however, because of your videos on MinUI, I ended up using that on the M17, and it’s become my pick up and play handheld of choice as a result! i’ve been enjoying tinkering around with MinUI on such a cheap device; my only gripe so far is that MinUI doesn’t make much use of the analog sticks on the system other than mapping the D-Pad and the face buttons to them. so if MinUI ever gets dual analog stick support, it’d pretty much would be perfect for my tastes when it comes to a pick up and play simple handheld.

If I hadn't already got a Steamdeck, which is hands down the best emulation system that I have ever used, I probably would have bought one of the Anbernics. It's just that, since I already have a Steamdeck, I don't see the point in buying any of these 'consoles' for emulation purposes, when the Deck can emulate everything up to PS3 and Xbox 360. The only downside is that it costs just a bit more than $100, but it does so much more also. Maybe they would serve as a secondary emulation system, for if my Steamdeck goes down any time? However, they would have to fulfil certain requirements, like being able to support an extensive library of added games, while also having access to one or two Micro SD Cards, while also having a battery life of around 8 hours and being able to emulate up to and including PS One games. If the system can't emulate PS One games, at a bare minimum, then it's not worth having. If I was going to do anything, IF, then I would probably buy the cheapest Steamdeck that I can get my hands on, and go that way. Store my roms on the MicroSD Card. Use the second Steamdeck purely for emulation purposes. Within time, the Steamdeck will drop in price. I doubt that it will ever drop to below $100 though. I do think that it is wonderful though, how these devices keep retro gaming alive still, decades after the games stopped being produced.
