I have the same unit in my Tesla, but I found two issues that made me stop using it. The first one is that it drains your iPhone’s battery in an hour, so you need to be plugged in all the time. The second issue is more important. While driving and using CarPlay, you can connect to your native navigation, but it will be offline. You won’t be able to see live traffic, find a supercharger, or predict the battery percentage left upon arrival of your destination because CarPlay is using the Internet connection. It’s not possible to have both systems on while driving.
@@ChargeToDrive I'm not so sure it's a bug. I think it's the 'physics' of how they get this to work. It's why it looks like it has (an expensive) option to get it's own cellular dataplan in the more expensive version via a SIM which makes it not worth it to me. FYI, I was using it for Android Auto as I'm a Google Pixel guy. The few things I miss from the from Tesla are : Pandora support, Waze support & Sirius. That being said I understand Sirius is around the corner. Tesla's nav is consistent enough with Waze in terms of routes, but the huge gap is the lack of speed trap warnings. What I would give to have Tesla's built in navigation offer that ability :(
Carlinkit is a pretty great unit...when it works. It often disconnects and you often need to reconnect to wifi or sometimes even to pull the plug and start from scratch but it gives WAZE which is fantastic. Been using it in my TESLA'S for years. Enjoy Dave.
This is great for people who love Carplay, but to be honest, I don't understand why so many people love Carplay. I was 100% satisfied with the Tesla navigation and used Spotify for music. Now that I drive a Lyriq I use the native nav which is Google maps, which i prefer. To each his own I guess
I don't get it. Carplay and AA don't offer anything that Tesla doesn't have and you lose the integration. Tesla has a choice of streaming apps, I'm using Tidal, you don't need any.more. it also has Netflix and UA-cam if you want entertainment when you are stopped. Tesla also has calendar integration, just open the Tesla app and it will automatically sync your calendar with the car. Tesla navigation doesn't have all of the options that Google Maps has and I miss that from AA but it has Supercharger integration and that's much more important. Lots of idiot car reviewers complain about the lack of Carplay in Teslas and in GM cars that are using Android Automotive because they don't understand that integrated systems are better than projection systems. Android Automotive and then Carplay were major leaps forward over the old infotainment systems that were in cars because legacy car companies can't write software. Tesla can write software just as well as Google and Apple. Now for the legacy companies Google offers them Android Automotive which is an integrated version of AA, GM and Volvo are already using it and eventually everyone will.
When you get used to the Apple ecosystem there's a comforting feeling to the aesthetic of it. I know that's why my wife likes apple carplay and her BMW. I love Android Auto in my car. There are a lot of apps you can use that aren't native to the Tesla system
From your video I can tell what's going on... This device is basically enacting a "man in the middle" solution for your Tesla's internet. Tesla car is connecting to the device's WiFi, that's now taking over your DNS and web traffic for that one specific site. Your phone connects to the device also and thinks it's a carplay device. This solution would also work if you were to use it on a laptop or really anything that can display a website.. Neat idea I must say.
Congratulations Dave Welcome to the Tesla CarPlay club. Whats nice about this method as opposed to getting a permanent screen is you can easily transport to your next Tesla
I picked one up Dave, thanks for the review. Overall, I love my new Model Y. It’s been five weeks, and I’ve already clocked over 5,000 miles - so I’ve had enough time to dig into what I like and where it’s not quite hitting the mark for me. First off, I miss the smooth, intuitive experience of CarPlay. The graphical UI, the better voice commands, and the ease of speech-to-text all made my previous rides a breeze. Tesla’s UI, while functional, feels a bit 'basic' in comparison. When they have an update that I'll be all in, but in the meantime, this unit will make me happy. That said, the navigation in the Telsa is solid as everybody has mentioned here, but I miss the added options from Waze - especially on long drives when having that extra flexibility and insight is key. So, in short, the car itself is fantastic, but there’s definitely room for improvement on the interface side. This will handicap me along just fine. :)

I got this basically for 1 reason.. On the Tesla Apple music app, you can't shuffle all songs. I don't know why they don't add this basic function but it's not there. Cool, but I would NEVER use one of these. You are sending ALL your info and giving access to your Apple account into a Chinese device. There is no way, reason why they are affordable, to get more of them in cars.
Stop supporting cheap Chinese products. The only perk is alerting red light and speed cameras on waze which I already do with my phone. Also, I'm concerned about the draw on the low voltage battery if it's kept plugged in. The resolution is terrible. It turns your premium Tesla experience into a low rez nightmare.
Good point on the 12v drain potential Will keep you up if that’s a problem. I also use and love Waze for alerts beyond the two you stated. Curious… did you write this message on an iPhone?

I have this device for more than a year using with my AA and it works fairly good, Yes I used only for Wase. A real car doesn't need this
This system is a clusterf#$k once installed. Constant reconnects, this is for a enthusiast only, don’t let your wife try to make it work, not gonna happen. Even once you do get it setup, you’ll be redoing theses steps constantly. Yes I bought it and I regret it.
Second review where I can't stop laughing how bad it looks and good about it reviewers talks :D Aw wow it's quick! No it is not... it's laggy as hell and in images they show full screen and they show half screen but nowhere you see that it's just another browser extension... with 20k+ subs you should be more honest reviewer and not only wow after wow for how much they paid to you.
Cool, but I would NEVER use one of these. You are sending ALL your info and giving access to your Apple account into a Chinese device. There is no way, reason why they are affordable, to get more of them in cars.
Once the Chinese ministry of industry hacks into your personal stuff…game over. No thx.
I agree. That Chinese website looked mad suspicious and it wasn’t secure at all. The best thing about Apple car play is Waze and the police alert, other than that I wouldn’t care for it.
I have this device for more than a year using with my AA and it works fairly good, Yes I used only for Wase. Regarding the resolution , you can get on the Carlink Setup on the browser (where the CarPlay or AA is projected) and you can setup the resolution to HD and it's way much better. Also they have there the menu for OTA updates and Dave may need to apply the latest firmware
@@outofspecdave1554 That's funny Dave. I bet 99% of the products he purchases and uses are made in China! lol
