  • NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at historic Edwards Air Force Base has a long history of using model aircraft for flight research. This video tells the story of how it was conceived, where it has been and where it is going. I'm proud of my time there and contributions made towards the unknown.

    Cool video. Retired firefighter from Edwards. Sometimes back in the nineties I would get permission from my supervisor and tower and fly my model aircraft on the ramp near the fire station. Also always enjoyed working around and supporting NASA.

    I was 10 yrs old in 1969. My uncle Glenn was a fighter pilot (P-51 thru F-4 Phantom, 35 yrs in) I built several P-51 models and pretended I was in them when flying them at the school grounds. Uncle Glenn retired in 76, bought a Super Decathlon and arranged a flight for me in Art Scholls Pitts Special (my first time ever airborne). Ken (the pilot in control) let me perform every maneuver after showing me how.
    In order: Roll, Loop, Hammer Head Stall, Cuban 8.....others......and I saved the "Outside Loop" for last....you can imagine why. I was having too much fun to get sick and he told me "You have to get your license, you're a natural". I did but not current anymore. Building/flying scale models taught me more than flight school....Walk-arounds and check-lists were common sense, ground school was much more difficult to me than flying...I miss those days of flying and playing golf with my uncle, Retired Level 06 Colonel USAF, the stories he told....left Earth 2013.

    • @scottfw7169
      @scottfw7169 Місяць тому +2

      I'm not the engineers you are looking for, closest I can claim is that my father and grandfather were pilots - Thing is, when designing a process, you do not want to add any actions that do not Have To be done and you do not want to add any product complexity that does not Have To be added, the fewer potential failure points the better. And then there's the thing about those soft, squishy, humans inside that spaceplane, their bags of mostly water bodies take the reentry G forces better at certain orientations compared to others, even though the reentry G forces are not as much as the launch G forces, but, hey, those humans have just been weightless for some amount of time and that has an impact. Basically, the less you flip the humans, the less opportunity they have to make a flipping mistake.
