- NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at historic Edwards Air Force Base has a long history of using model aircraft for flight research. This video tells the story of how it was conceived, where it has been and where it is going. I'm proud of my time there and contributions made towards the unknown.
Cool video. Retired firefighter from Edwards. Sometimes back in the nineties I would get permission from my supervisor and tower and fly my model aircraft on the ramp near the fire station. Also always enjoyed working around and supporting NASA.
That’s cool. I doubt they’d allow that today.
@@gerrycollins9409 there is an RC club that flies off Rosamond lake 👍🏻
@ yes I used to stop there sometimes going home in the morning when getting off work. I think I flew there a few times also.
@@RedJensen Is that us antelope valley tailwinds, we're south of there just north of lancaster, there's another group out there? I haven't noticed if they have a fria? Oh is this a military group I guess since it's on edwards? They're not AMA? Oh I think I found them, "Muroc Model Masters".
@ called Muroc Model Masters, its an AMA club 👍🏻
I was 10 yrs old in 1969. My uncle Glenn was a fighter pilot (P-51 thru F-4 Phantom, 35 yrs in) I built several P-51 models and pretended I was in them when flying them at the school grounds. Uncle Glenn retired in 76, bought a Super Decathlon and arranged a flight for me in Art Scholls Pitts Special (my first time ever airborne). Ken (the pilot in control) let me perform every maneuver after showing me how.
In order: Roll, Loop, Hammer Head Stall, Cuban 8.....others......and I saved the "Outside Loop" for last....you can imagine why. I was having too much fun to get sick and he told me "You have to get your license, you're a natural". I did but not current anymore. Building/flying scale models taught me more than flight school....Walk-arounds and check-lists were common sense, ground school was much more difficult to me than flying...I miss those days of flying and playing golf with my uncle, Retired Level 06 Colonel USAF, the stories he told....left Earth 2013.
Ive been an RC Pilot since 1987. I'd work at this lab in a nano second!!
Those guys work in a Toy Store... Amazing video.
I used to fly models on the Rosamond lake bed in the 90's with the Muroc Model Masters. Best flying site in the world! Great memories, thanks for the great video!
Fantastic what you guys do !
My dream job. Bugger! Missed it by 50 years! 😭
Yea me too.
Thanks Red...great vid ! I enjoyed this . Wish i had known about this years ago.
Well done. Thank you.
You have to release DROID 2 plans!!! And fantastic video!!!
Look like a great 4 ch trainer. Similar to the Big Stick
@russcole5685 I've built a Stick from plans before. This is much different!
@@SeansLittleBayofHorrors the DROIDs were all modified BTE Models Super Flying Kings built by Bruce Tharpe himself RIP. Main mods were reduced wingspan to increase the wing loading a bit, removable tails, additional hatches and upgraded landing gear for the heavier weight. You still can occasionally find SFK kits for sale. They are great flying airplanes
Right on Robbie!
Hope your well and having the time of your life! ❤️🇺🇸😎
Hi Red! Thrilled I stumbled into this vid. So happy I know you.
@@LPHow likewise LP!
awesome video !
many thanks for sharing that, Brilliant !
What an awesome job, I’m jealous
Absolutely Fascinating!! Great Video. Can I get R/C plans for the "Droid 2 or 3"
@@garyhilson7220 it’s a BTE Models Super Flyin King.
Amazing, is this your own production? I'm a lifelong modeler and was not aware of the subscale lab. What an amazing place!
@@MontegaB I wrote the script but the amazing video folks, specifically Steve Parcel at NASA put it together.
What a cool job!
Thanks for posting
Thank you.
AVIATION ENTHUSIASM..is a higher quality of people...who enjoy. What
It's all about....not just a control operator of arfs now adays of people who just want a toy to fly with ...
Your approach is more in depth of aviation...great video ...!!!
This came up in my recommended videos, I didn't notice who uploaded until you appear at 5:58 and I said hey I know this guy, I subscribe to his channel... then I realized lol
Thanks for subscribing, I appreciate it.
Thanks for the vids
OUTSTANDING !!!
This is the kind of stuff I'd love to do involving rc planes and test flying.
I would really like to find out more about the red and yellow X-24A behind the guy talking at 9:40. I've been redrawing the old Paul Plecan X-24A ducted-fan model plans from an old early 70s RCM annual handbook but would really like some extra X-24A cross section details. Also I'm wondering in the same scenes but on the other table, is that a 'Littlest Stick' next to the DROID 2?
@@1944GPW the X-24 was scratch built many years ago, no drawings exist. The littlest stick is actually a mini Droid. I built that mini years back for fun. It has UMX radio gear and a brushless motor. It sits on my mantle now 👍🏻
BEST JOB IN THE WORLD OR WHAT 😊
All the while the various FAA's and CAA's around the world are doing their best to stifle the model aviation hobby, with regulation over-reach and mis-information about the risks involved.
Any chance of getting plans to that flying wing?
@@Cee64E www.amaflightschool.org/diy/build-nasas-prandtl-flying-wing
Wow! I remember the Krafts RC remote control transmitter!
TERRAIN TERRAIN PULL UP PULL UP! This would be a worthy model aircraft club to join!
it makes sense to use models . sometimes u have to test in real world conditions . im glad where they use models instead of full size aircrafts for saftey sake .
Prandtl flying wing is one of my favorite.
Excellent idea to work out a fixed-wing drone launch that can take advantage of a Mars lander's velocity upon entry into the atmosphere to send it on its' way with speed & altitude to scout and look around!
What an amazing career that would be
What kit is that cub at the end??
@@robieosborne7369 Bill Hempel 60% Super Cub
I have flown RC models all my life and I designed and built UAV's, autopilots, telemetry systems and data down links, I am now retired but I would have loved to have worked there.
Be a lot cooler if the Cub was the first fixed wing to fly on mars :)
Jasper made it in! Woooottttttt
@17:42 why did the cub pitch down after release instead of pitch up??
I've had this idea scratching around in my brain. What if boundary layer control was assisted in takeoff by a lightweight bottle of compressed air jetting through ducts to flaps and tail?
sehr interessant
How would someone get a job there? I've looked for nasa model shop, and such and it's impossible to find? You're not on linkedin? Are you a member of the avt by chance? oic are you with "mach industries"?
It takes a pretty special combination of skill sets. Lots of people think they have what it takes, but in reality very actually do.
@@RedJensen I have a pretty wide variety of them in varying level of skill, but almost all done on my own or freelance would be my issue of actually proving them to someone to get my foot in the door probably. I don't know of many skills except really crazy in depth stuff like programming gps or something maybe is something I never really dabbled in. I recently saw a super high paying job for that that looked interesting. However, I would say most other things related to models and especially fpv and drones I'm pretty familiar with. Of course its possible that you don't always know what you don't know right.
@@RedJensen I was just talking to Tony a little, who said he worked there. I guess he can clue me in. lol
@ yes Tony was before me. I’m no longer there but when I was we looked for people with autopilot and sensor integration experience. Pilot skills included 75+ lbs heavy and fast. The lab has changed quite a bit since Tony was there, quite a bit more emphasis on technology and less on traditional modeling.
@@RedJensen Ok awesome! I'm currently testing my first inav wing, and have a lot of experience in ardupilot/px4, and been playing around with rtk mapping and stuff. Sounds really interesting!
This is like the model makers on the Flight Test UA-cam channel. Wow.
☠BLACK BARON☠3:36 ... The "+/+ or -/-" ... "Magnetic landing gear" looks awesome.
It's just wire skids, no magnets.
what year was this filmed?
@@staymad7206 1950’s through 2024
@@RedJensen this is very cool . thanks. resonates with the old kid in a lot of us
Wish I had that job
Isn't this just a bunch of RC plane guys conned the biggest aerospace company to play with their planes on company time ? It's a dream job for me
Question for engineering people does a space plane have to come back into the atmosphere in an upright configuration , can it come back upside down and flip back to back over once it has passed the reentry heating part of the flight ?
I'm not the engineers you are looking for, closest I can claim is that my father and grandfather were pilots - Thing is, when designing a process, you do not want to add any actions that do not Have To be done and you do not want to add any product complexity that does not Have To be added, the fewer potential failure points the better. And then there's the thing about those soft, squishy, humans inside that spaceplane, their bags of mostly water bodies take the reentry G forces better at certain orientations compared to others, even though the reentry G forces are not as much as the launch G forces, but, hey, those humans have just been weightless for some amount of time and that has an impact. Basically, the less you flip the humans, the less opportunity they have to make a flipping mistake.
I was assigned to Edwards AFB and had I known about this program I would have stayed in CA instead of PCS to UT. Oh well.
Heritage of the Horton brothers.
🤘🤠
All who enjoy activity...enjoy with in there means of cost so those who fly
All ready to fly owner operator arfs can buzz the sky's with electric motors & foam construction can do sa as Thay will...
Now those of us who are true modelers build & construct with the interest of people who are engineers as careers are very very interesting aircrafts. Builds......
"We maintain a fleet of 20 vehicles and 6-12 of them are airworthy" makes me feel good about my ratio of flying models to piles of sticks and foam, since it's barely worse than NASA's worst :)
most people tend to forget about the atmosperics in the name of nasa . ie air plane s . the space aspect is more popular.
@@allanegleston4931 I think you mean aeronautics 👍🏻
@@RedJensen thanks for correction.:)
I know him, I know him!
The Best job in the world !! Isn't it
I don't think this technology will be used for general aviation. It seems like it will only be used for military and war purposes.
We don't use much foam board lol
Hydrazine for only 20,000 feet?? Crazy 😂🤡👍
The point was develop a power plant to fly on Mars, not go high on earth.
@RedJensen ohhh well that makes sense. It said go to 20,000 ft and take samples of the atmosphere but it didn't exactly specify it was for use on Mars in the video so that makes sense
They wouldn't hire me.
Modeling never receives the respect it deserves, rapid iteration and safety are very important when pushing the bleeding edge of flight.
What great dream job for a child model maker to grow up and do!
😂😂😂😂
I think you guys need to step up your game. Elon musk is gonna put nasal out of business lol
Especially if you cant spell NASA!
@RedJensen obviously I miss spelled it you fucktard
those guys fly RC planes because none will fit into a full size version 😂
Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤘
