  • In this video, I'd like to tell my story with an interesting OEM mini PC.
    3D print files (Fusion 360 file included in case you need any personal adjustment). Notice that they are designed for the NEC mini PC I own. I can’t guarantee the compatibility with any ThinkCentre tiny. Please double check the dimensions before printing.

    This is basically the same as the Lenovo M720q/M920x pcs! they all feature a 8x slot, which is very rad in my opinion. Also this can be noticed by the Lenovo OEM logo on the PCB, nice >:]
    BTW the Lenovo ones are pretty inexpensive so anyone could recreate this!

    3:53 Taking a look at the 8500T datasheet, It only has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes which can be either 1x16, 2x8 or 1x8+2x4. This motherboard is probably configured for the latter with a possible configuration where that SSD2 section is populated by another NVME slot which can operate at x4. Though the B360 controller in this board also offers 11 more PCIe 3.0 lanes.
    12:32 Considering the extra height added by the A2000 shroud, it looks like there's plenty of space for the 2.5 SSD to go in there over the CPU heatsink.

    • @thinhdora
      @thinhdora  20 днів тому +7

      Thanks for your information. About adding 2.5 SSD into the extra space, I also considered. The difficulty is I might need another longer SATA flex cable to route from under the GPU which is not easy to find. Moreover, the space above the cpu shroud, especially near the rear exhaust, has high temperature. Thus I thought it wouldn't worth it. Just use an M2 SSD with suitable amount of space, and use external SSD via USB 3.0 if needed is good enough and more simple.

    • @Karti200
      @Karti200 15 днів тому

      The problem is not the space itself but getting a specific flex cable that both sends power and data.
      Lenovo has their own one used here and it is very short

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino
      @BrunodeSouzaLino 15 днів тому

      @@Karti200 That's just a regular flex cable which combines SATA and the smaller SATA power into a cable which terminates into a regular SATA one on the other side. Those are common on laptops. when you don't want a round cable and a vertical connector on the board. Some adapters even have a removable flex on the drive side so you can procure a longer one just in case.

    The CPU seems to be giving way for the GPU to use up all the powerbudget. Notice the cpu racing to reach 800mhz a large portion of the time. I suggest that you try to run Throttlestop to force the CPU to clock higher and or increase its TDP limits which might be artificially limited by the motherboard since it detects a 70w GPU in the main pcie slot.

    Just a few weeks ago, I decided to buy a 1lt Mini PC of this type. I chose a Refurbished HP Elitedesk 705 G5 with Ryzen 5 Pro 3400g at 65w. After 3 days the SSD I came with died and I had to buy another one, not to mention that as a precaution I also changed the RAM for a pair in Dual Channel in addition to changing the Thermal Paste for an Artic one.
    Fortunately, restoring the system was easy thanks to the HP Bios, which curiously is also its Achilles heel by not having any advanced configuration for either OC or UV. I highlight the latter due to temperature issues since it does heat up somewhat when the TDP exceeds 50w.
    I have been doing tests and removing the Cover, lowering the temperature by about 7-9°C which gives me a slight margin to handle a little more than 55w TDP and, therefore, a little more FPS.
    In performance, except for temperature, it is equal to the Stock R5 3400g Desktop, and Vega 11 still works for play in HD +30fps...
    Honestly, for the price I paid in total, which was about 240dlls with everything and the emergency extras, I consider myself well served.
    Thanks to your video I made the decision to cancel my project of installing an NVME egpu and it would be better keep playing at 30s HD and save up for a Mini ITX computer with a LP GCard. I am worried about investing more in the Elitedesk and not getting all the potential out of it (or other piece crash...)
    But your project looks awesome and i hope you can improve the performance very soon. Greetings...
    Thanks for the information and explanation...

    This may sound crazy but hear me out. RTX 4060 low profile exists. Yes, it draws 50% more power than the A2000 BUT it's much more powerful than the A2000, close to double the performance. If you manage to undervolt it enough it should still deliver better performance that the undervolted A2000. 4060 is also half the price of a A2000 at least where I live.

      Also if u install a gpu make sure u download and install throttlestop and disable bd protocol. Otherwise bios limits cpu to 800mhz due to extra power required for gpu. Disabling it removes that limit.

    Yeah, apparently the motherboard is the week point when it comes to power delivery to the gpu. You have enough space to potentially put in a rtx 4060 low profile that takes 6 pin power, and maybe enough space to add one of those power supplies that use a charger with a brick (pixo atx) inside the case and use that to power the gpu. Maybe you can even figure out a way to power the motherboard off that too

    This pc throttles the cpu quite fast, eaven when it's "cold". You can change that behavior with throttlestop. There you can desable DB Prochot, which will remove the stutter.
    You can see that behavior on the video. When you experience stutter the cpu is using 5w, instead of 30w or 35w.

      @thinhdora Thanks. I wanted to ask you for it as well. I've got a m720q + T1000 gpu. This will be good if I want to upgrade the gpu in the future. P.s make sure u download and install throttlestop and disable bd protocol. I had the same performance issues as you until I figured it out. Cpu is only working at 800mhz with gpu install hence low performance. Once u disable it, it will run at full speeds. It's very easy to download and install

      I can’t say for sure, but it looks the m910q doesn’t have the connector even the board has the available area. It might be a cut-down version of m920q. You might find a blank space where the slot should be.

    The NEC version in off-white (it's not quite beige, not quite white) looks better than the Lenovo. Shame it's already hard to find low-watt GPUs for this as-is, let alone in off-white. Edit: You may get better GPU performance out of a T1000 8gb instead, as the performance loss with the watt limit being so tight means some CUDA cores aren't behaving themselves.
