    Sometimes these come with the 365 watt PSU out of the XE2, which have a 6-pin PCIe power connection, which should be good for about anything with an 8-pin with an adapter. It's a shame they didn't just include it in all of them, unlike HP with the Z series workstations.

    Since you’re not using the 5.25” bays one of my favorite tricks for this layout is to screw in a tray that holds two SATA SSDs where you mentioned screwing in one. I did this when PNY used to have 128GB SATA SSDs for $15. I also use Icy Dock Flex Trios. This platform really has the potential for one to go crazy with storage expansion.

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino
      @BrunodeSouzaLino Місяць тому

      There's a cheaper alternative to the Icy Dock which can hold 6 2.5" drives. With two 5.25" bays, you could potentially have 12 drives in there.

    • @Lurch-Bot
      @Lurch-Bot Місяць тому

      IcyDock to the rescue, lol. Their double 2.5" to 3.5" bay adapter is perfect for a build like this. They're $15 on Amazon. In an old Optiplex, it really is a 100% toolless install.

    You can still get drive adapters that will allow you to mount a laptop hard drive or standard SSD in the 3.5 bay slot. Used one within the last year when using an old case for a computer. Yes you can do the coffee time mod on z170 motherboards but you will have to do a little research on how to do it successfully. It will require tapeing off 2 of the pins on the bottom of the cpu as well as brudging 2 other pins plus you will have to short a small pin on the motherboard. Each board is different though so research is mandatory to do it successfully. I currently have a spare Asrock z170 extreme7+ motherboard with a i7 6700 that i want to do the coffeetime mod with so i can install a i7 or i9 9900k.
      The easiest way to do the mod is by getting your hands on an Asrock z170 OC Formula motherboard.@HairyScrambler

    You'll never get anything bigger Video wise in there that won't suffocate without major front end surgery. The smaller cards work and won't build up much heat, you try putting a 2060 or 2080 in there and it's gonna run hot and quickly cook parts. I mod these cases all the time for customers who want bling and more cooling and it's fun side hobby. I always recommend newer cases but you can mod these older ones fairly easy and fast. Lovin the video!

  • @arcomador
    @arcomador Місяць тому +2

    another upgrade you can make to these is putting a 7th gen core i7 and upgrading the cpu cooler with dell part VWMTJ, really made a difference in performance. As long as its on latest firmware, and you use that cooler you shouldn't have any issues with the upgrade.

  • @RobertFixit

    I use SMART in my Optiplex as well, but that big jumble of cables really annoyed me so I removed the ones I did not need. you could stuff them all in the 5.25” bay.
    In mine though, I had 2 3.5” SSDs in the 5.25” (Since I removed the hard drive cage)
    With all the excess wiring removed, it made it look really clean. Only 3 wires were coming down to the MB.

    Good video, makes me think about my extra HP Z2 G5 workstation with a 10700 and a 320W PSU, I wonder if the Gigabyte low profile 4060 would work in it with a sata to 8 pin adapter? There's not a lot of PSU overhead 🤔

  • @JuanGonzalez-hv6vs
    @JuanGonzalez-hv6vs 29 днів тому

    I suggest using a semi-modular or modular PSU to help with cable management. You could use some clips. I saw this UA-cam game bench, and he used clips you can attach to your PC body for cable management.

  • @Lurch-Bot
    @Lurch-Bot Місяць тому +2

    SATA can carry 54W and the slot will deliver around the same. Although the slot can provide up to 75W, in practice, it never does. You could put a RX6600 in this machine without upgrading the PSU because they only draw 100W. Of course you will lose a little performance because of no reBAR support but it is still a solid GPU even without reBAR.
    Take it easy with taping SSDs. Less is more. One square inch of 3M mounting tape is more than enough. Put it in the middle so if you have to pull it, you can just twist it off.
    I sold a 1650/Haswell i7 build in an old case recently for $350 so you really could make some money flipping this.

    The best low wattage and second most efficient graphics card to use in the Nvidia product stack is to get the Nvidia quadro P2000 more Ram and 12% more efficient than the GTX1650 and on the used market you can get these for as low as $80 at ebay auction. Most popular card to use compared to the GTX1650, or the overpriced RTXA2000 that's only another 12% greater in efficiency than the P2000
