I'm just slightly too young for them, I was an 80s kid, I didn't really recognise their genius until much later. In the 80s, anything 70s was seen as wildly uncool for us kids - even Led Zep!

That orchestra you are asking about is all John Paul Jones by himself on the Melotron and then he played the bass with his feet, like organ players do in churches, best reg from Iceland, LED ZEPPELIN, best band ever.
What you're noticing is that the drums are in 4/4 time and the guitar and singer are both in 3/4 time....they link up every 12th bar.....insane skill and concentration
Drummer is John Henry Bonham, widely regarded by his peers as the greatest rock drummer of all time. The strings were played by the bassist John Paul Jones on the Mellotron while playing the bass with his feet. Because he’s John Paul Jones. They didn’t need to bring anyone else in. Was just them 4. Oh, and they are Led Zeppelin, every song they made was fantastic. Kashmir is an iconic song, May not even be in my top 5 Zeppelin songs
@@mviroli I love it too, and it is certainly one of the most iconic rock songs ever. But I have personal favorites that I would take over it. Also, Zeppelin has most of my top 20 songs all time, so I’d still say I have it WAY up there lol
"Is that an orchestra?" I love this comment. It's literally one guy. On this song, John Paul Jones was responsible for playing strings, horns, organ, and bass. At the same time. He's the greatest glue guy in the history of music in my opinion. He played every instrument and every role he had to, to hold Led Zeppelin's increasingly complex sound together, and he did it perfectly. One of the finest musicians that has ever lived, full stop.

Phenomenal, eloquent reaction. Your note of the vocals "dragging behind the beat" shone a new light on a song I've heard a thousand times. Bravo, Sub. 👏
A lot of that nice, shaggy looseness around the beat, with most of the players, except Bonham of course, who’s the dead-on ship’s engine of the whole thing. Beautiful sense of impending cataclysms gets generated by all this.
Now you must do the live version from Celebration Day Concert. They are much older and the drummer is the original drummers Son. You will be even more impressed with Celebration Day Concert version. It was their last Concert and first since the death of their drummer back in 80s
The cool part is that the guitar is tuned differently and along with the bass the instruments in 3/4 time like a waltz. The drums are in 4/4 time so actually the song sounds like it is in 12/4 time.
The thing about this is LZ are always this good!! The overall magic involves all four of them. In my top 2 Zeppelin songs of all time (some days it's #1, some days it's #2). This song never fails to put me in a trance and take me on a journey of discovery. What amazes me most is the complex sound that comes out of such simplicity; simple riff, no guitar solo, no groovy bass line, simple keyboards, simple drums (except for a few fills in the last 90 seconds), and rather simple vocals (other than a few Astral wails). I don't know how they did it, but by chilling out and creating a monotonous drone, they were able to transcend all that came before and all that would come after. This is beyond genius; this is catching the cosmos in a jar and releasing it as Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin started in 1968 and ended in 1980 with the passing of drummer John Bonham. The group comprised Jimmy Page on all guitars, Jimmy created the band, and produced all their albums, John Paul Jones on bass, mandolin, and keyboards. John Paul Jones played bass and keys on this song as well as did the string arrangements with session musicians. Drummer John Bonham is considered one of the top 3 rock drummers in history (in my vote, he's #1), and vocalist Robert Plant who also played harmonica on several songs. Robert was inspired to write the lyrics while on a trip, driving through the desert in Morocco. Jimmy had a couple of riff ideas that he worked on with John Bonham and once John Paul Jones brought in the orchestral arrangement to add to the open tuned guitar, which brought out a Middle Eastern vibe, the song exploded. This is one of what I call Zeppelin's three "epics", in addition to Stairway to Heaven and Achilles' Last Stand. All three illustrate unique, inspired sections of music.

The horns and string were real; they were arranged by John Paul Jones. The main riffs were from Jimmy Page, and the drumming of course was from John Bonham, who unintentionally created the perfect hip-hop beat several years before hip-hop was even born. His rhythm on this song has been co-opted by hip-hop musicians for decades.
Great reaction! The guitar and strings melodic riffs may sound familiar because P Diddy sampled them for one of his tunes. Nothing beats the original, of course.

Robert Plant had surgery on his vocal nodules the year before and he still has some raspiness. I don't think he was 100% recovered, but the raspiness adds to the feel. 👍
