That poor bikes had a hard life! That crank was filthy. Needs full rebuild IMO. Also a new cylinder head that weld doesn’t fill me with confidence. As others have said the pipe looks blocked. My biggest concern would be those frame rails though 🙈 good luck joe great content as usual
If you replace the side cover gasket you might as well replace the Water pump impeller shaft and bearings and seals. If the bearings are worn even a little bit the impeller shaft and seals will both be worn. Problem is that the seals end up wearing grooves in the shaft because the bearings are worn. I just rebuilt a 96 RM 125 a few months ago that someone had "Rebuilt" and it overheated because all of the coolant ended up in the oil. Luckily it did not hurt the bottom end but I did have to get the cylinder bored .005 over to clean it up.
There is one part of that carb common problem. There is a gasket you didnt change goes bad. Its under the 2 torque screws . Look up JDMK05 kit and how to install. Jd jettings also has jet/needle kits for these bikes. I enjoy your videos and always learn something. Thank you for making them.
Like others have said, you had more smoke coming from the engine than out the exhaust. It may be clogged or have water in it. I'm thinking this bike was sunk or was exposed to salt water somehow because of the rust and corrosion
I'll tell you one more time the transmission on a 2 stroke is completely separate from the engine.. now it could have gotten water in the engine.and transmission . But there COMPLETELY SEPARATE ON A 2 STROKE
Check the barrell were it's been welded, somethings up cos the full stud came out they need torqued in and loctite b4 u torque head nuts, if the skirt inside is damaged or cracked were weld the coolant will be going down the cylinder coolant grooves but might be cracked inside at the front letting coolant into the bore
A long time ago a neighbour owned a Yamaha IT 175. It had no compression. You could “kick” start it by hand easily, but it ran beautifully and pulled hard. Never saw the like again. 🤷 by contrast our Suzuki 185 was very hard to kickstart.
Whilst I'm always impressed by your knowledge and ability it does annoy me that you're perfectly happy to do a half assed job just to get it running. That engine had obviously been full of water, the coolant leak, etc. You just Breeze past these issues just to fire it up even though there's a fair chance you're doing more damage even if it's minor. What's wrong with doing it right first time occasionally? On a bike like this it's not really an issue accept it's a Yamaha but on some stuff you do it can be really annoying. OCD I guess.
Please make a video about how to source correct jets, pistons, bearings, shock oil ext. how to identify what works for whatever we’re working on. Please please. Looks like it went down with the Titanic....wow. With the frame rust and other issues, hope it was cheap. It doesn't look worth the money or effect but awesome video content. Great Channel content bud.
another way to add compression is re sleeving your cylinder or re plating if there are any cracks/scratches. Sometimes with the older bikes the cylinder gets worn down a lot and a new piston + rings wont be enough
When it started, it didn't look like the exhaust was coming out of the tail pipe the way it should, like it was clogged. When you got on the throttle, barely any smoke was coming out of the tail pipe vs out the front end by the engine itself.
I’m about halfway through the video so I don’t know if you caught this yet, but I do not see a clamp on the intake boot for the carb. If you have not already put one on, make sure to put on there than can cause a lean condition and cause the motor to blow
What a project... I love fixing up old bikes, but I only ride newer bikes now and they are so much more reliable. This thing is a piece of crap, I wouldn't pay much for it. You basically need a new bike. Thanks for showing us your projects!!!
id be wanting to go through the whole thing as it looks like its had the arse kicked out of it. the loose ring is just the beginning of a tired old bike
I'd also replace that piston also , don't know about you but if I just put a ring on that damaged piston and sold that bike to someone that's shady work and in my state that I live in is a crime !!
Get a sharpie and put the piston inside the cylinder, then trace out the outline of the intake and make the piston windows match the intake! That will make it have WAY BETTER THROTTLE RESPONSE!! Hey Joe! What do you think about doing a good detailed video on a boat outboard motor winterization process? Maybe on your fishing boat you still have in your front yard? There are ones out there but not very good in my opinion... Thanks! 😁
Not a bad question but I am curious as to why you would need to winterize an outboard boat motor unless it has a closed cooling system such as a motorcycle or car has? I am only asking because I do not own a boat and never have but I was under the impression that outboard boat motors are an open liquid cooling system meaning they suck water out of the body of water they are in and discharge that water back into the body of water. Again, I have no real knowledge of these types of engines so I am just curious as to why that would need to be done as well as if I am just completely wrong with my understanding of them?
Hi Will 😁Well i do know what your talking about but from what i see on some other videos... That there is more involved if you want to do it right. Cylinders should be fogged with fogging oil.(spark plugs changed and that time if you want to) Lower transom oil should be changed incase there's some water mixed in with it so it does not frieze. And some other smaller things... I have a 25hp mercery on a 15 footer i got this past spring and i just want to do it right cause its going to sit out in a cold back yard this winter. @@just_in_time5518 I appreciate your response and by no means do I know what I am talking about with one of these engines. But from what you said, it seems legit that you might add oil into the cylinders just to ensure they are well coated and wont rust. Not sure why the spark plug would need to be changed unless there is a concern that rust may occur. I would be terrified if I needed to lower my trans oil just in the event that water may have been introduced into the engine. That means you would need to do a rebuild. Lowering the trans oil will do nothing to prevent or fix the issue. Seems to me that you just need to do a normal end of season maintenance. I could be completely wrong but I doubt it.

Yep,agree, the exhaust is blocked must of been laying in a ditch,to take that amount water into the engine.
I'll tell you one more time the transmission on a 2 stroke is completely separate from the engine.. now it could have gotten water in the engine.and transmission

Oversized piston sometimes has larger jets. Pinched clutch gasket can leak.

Dude, if I had HALF of your knowledge I would be a very happy man! Amazing.
Coolant leaking into the combustion chamber or cylinder, probably washed down the cylinder, wearing out the piston ring.
Yeah, maybe that weld on the cylinder didn’t fix the crack completely
Cdi mounts with one of the upper engine mount bolts it tucks up between both engine mount brackets
