The "Vortec" 4.3 V6 was introduced in 1996. Prior to that, the heads were not the Vortec heads we've all grown to love over the old TBI and carbureted engines made between 1985-1995. 19996 was also the year of transition from OBD1 to OBD2. There is very little support for the OBD1 platforms, so what most do in this case is a good old school Intake, a good after market EFI system that's stand alone, cam, lifters, valve springs and rockers. On the exit side of things, a slight port polishing, long tube headers and after market cat back or depending on your states regulations, cat delete full system opened up from the 2.5 to 2.75 and sometimes even 3 inch header back depending on the mods made. But there is a definite advantage to modding a Vortec engine over non Vortec, as they're easier to pull tuned power out of them where as the older 4.3L is more of an old school mentality type of engine build. Awesome advice 8020. Just felt obligated to do a slight correction to your initial description and years of manufacture for you and your watchers. There is enough of a difference that the build mentality between the two types of 4.3 V6's offered should be considered before any modifications start. Know your engine in its stock form in order to modify it with confidence. Cheers! Zip~
Z - Well said! Thanks for taking the time to share all of this.
Retired my 01 S10 ZR2 daily driver/work truck while it was still in nice shape. Not looking to build a tire shredder, but an extra 50+ hp would be fun. I'm building a parts list to throw at it this spring. Rebuilt the front end last summer when I found a bad cv axle. Always looking for informative vids such as this one. Thank You
T - Thanks for the feedback! Keep us updated with your build.
Get the newer LV1 or LV3 4.3l V6, close to 500 hp with a cam and lifter plus spring change, stock bottom end.
D - Well said.
where do you get the cam?
Yes, which company provides these upgrades
Which trucks had LV1 or LV3, I have a 92’ TBI 4.3 & not sure what could be done to it. It’s on a S10. Would the LV3 mate up fine to the 700R4?
Thank you for making this
B - Thanks for the feedback! Hope it helps.
one of my fav engins.
D - They certainly can be great!
The lv3 is a monster tho especially with a cam, exhaust and tune
C - Well said!
I have a 5.3 do the same rules apply for adding power? Im just looking to add a bit more power without affecting reliability.
K - We have a full video on this that would be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/u5YTCUuS1eY/v-deo.html
Thank you @8020Media
What type of cams fit for the lu3 cause when I search for them on google usually just v8 cams show up instead mocking me 😂
D - What are you looking to do? Aftermarket?
@8020Media I just want a little extra power nothing to crazy I drive it daily
D - Don't think cams would be worth it if you're just driving it as a daily driver. Typically aren't cheap.
@8020Media that's cool with me I guess I kinda want a cam that can work with the stock internals, I just finished paying off my truck and got a few extra hundred bucks now and then to splurge
@@diamondboy3456we in the same boat I’ll still cam it even tho I daily my 4.3 s10
Getting rid of the fan and clutch and replacing it with an electric fan will free up 15hp and 2mpg.
R - Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I have a 2007 Silverado with a v6 looking to see if they make after market cam kits for it I have tried looking but o luck
F - We can take a look.
Same haven't found anything, been looking for a good one for 3 years
Check out Scoggin Dickey... they've got a video where they dyno test 3 different cams on the LV3
What size tires? How heavy is the truck, auto or manual?
Have a 2007 Sierra with a V6. It does not have any power on the highway. Anything above 65 miles per hour is turning 2500 RPM and sucking gasoline. Had a few 4.3L V6 S-10s back in the 1990’s that would run like a stripped arse ape but not this truck. You do not have to worry about getting a speeding ticket in my truck.
Do you have any recommendations for a catback with a 99 jimmy?
L - We don't have a recommendation honestly.. Not a ton to choose from.
I wanted to cam my 2003 4.3 v6 but I don’t know where to start or what cam kit to use, I don’t want anything crazy since it’s my daily but what do you guys recommend?
E - Would that be your first mod?
@ yes that would be my first mod
E - The problem with recommending is there are so many different options depending on what kind of build you're going for.
@@8020Mediai cant find any mods for a 99-06 4.3 vortec
do they make long tube headers for a 2011 silverado? 4.3
F - They should! May be more difficult to find however.
You could definitely build a 1500hp vortec the blocks are super strong and they are 2 bolt mains so you can get splaid 4 bolt mains to put in
the cranks cost alot tho they were $2500 for a stroker crank when i put one in my elco
im probably making 400ftlbs of torque to the wheels and probably about 320hp the vortec heads are insanely good for torque i have issues lighting up the tires and i have the elcos stock gearing in the rear (2.56)
K - Don't know if that was a typo or not. Are we seeing 1500hp..?
@8020Media yes I'm sure a stock 4.3 vortec block could make 1500
Throttle body replacement..remove the defuser 10 to 25 hp gain
S - Thanks for the insight.
Which catback exhaust system will work for me , if i already have short tube headers and a high flow catalytic converter. 2001 Silverado
R - There are a lot of options out there that all depend on sound preference. Hard for us to say which would be best for your setup.
A huge question for me would be, do you trust those plug-in tuner chips that fit into the scanner slot? I probably wont go that route, unless im just being dumb and thats how youre supposed to do it
V - There's many ways to do it. If you don't trust it, there's other routes out there. No reason to for yourself into getting one.
@8020Media ok thanks, I have a 08 1500 sierra WT that I just need a little extra juice with haha, feels like I'm driving a semi when I'm hauling a trailer (yes under weight) and I don't really want to engine swap it. The current truck market in my area is way too inflated so I'm not trying to buy a whole new truck but 🤷♂️ I'll try your tips and see if I can be satisfied 😂
V - Keep us updated!
Theres only 1 answer , if you have a 4.3 it can be fast but never will be until you fit a cam.
P - Correct
The real answer for power is just LS swap it 😂
N - I mean, if you have the budget, sure lol.
Nah lmao that's what everyone resorts to I wanna build a badass v6 lol
V6 build is the way to go.
Is the l31 the same
S - The L31 is a 5.7 Vortec. Mods are different if that's what you're asking.
@@8020Media oh shoot I just tried to look up witch 4.3 version I had it's in a 2004 blazer zr2 4x4 trying to get some nice daily mods that wake it up a bit it already has no cats and duals to flow master proflow
S - Keep us updated with your build!
