He rehearsed over and over, and could do the same exact move time after time. Truly an incredible dancer, but more than that a hard-working and professional performer.
You could tell he worked great with the professional dancers who worked on his videos. To me, that’s the most impressive part of his skill: he made it look totally improvised, while being completely repeatable. Brilliant.

I love how Michael mastered standing mostly in one spot, but using small but intricate movements with entire body to create a flowing movement. Other dances are more grandiose, but in "Billie Jean," it's mainly his feet, hips, even ankles. Pulling his elbow down, leaning with his shoulders. He's not jumping around and taking huge sweeping steps, but it's athletic and exact as heck. He used the Moonwalk sparingly-- like an exclamation point! You spend the rest of the performance thinking, "What did I just see?!" and hoping he'll do it again. It's so fast all you can do is be agog, but you have NO idea how he pulled that off! Genius. It feels more like a magic show than a concert, he's that good.

I think this was the Motown 25th anniversary special. Even watching from home, I stood and screamed watching him glide across the floor in his iconic Moonwalk. Michael was an entertainer extraordinaire. Just like his idol, Mr. Jackie Wilson, he was magically light on his feet. The singing, dancing and great stage presence he gave was everything you came to see. RIP Michael!

I loved your comments on this performance. ❤
In 1987, I saw MJ live in concert when I was a child, and to this day the sound of the live instruments, the electric energy of MJs band and the way MJ danced is still in me. It's hard to explain as I have only several vivid recollections of key moments, but rather, it's the energy and feeling that is what I remember most. I guess it's like what you experience when you watch this Motown 25 performance.

It’s so hard to appreciate how big this was at the time. Every other artist on the stage that night stood in front of a mic and sang. No one moved around the stage and put on a performance like MJ. You could not take your eyes off him. It’s difficult to imagine now because he inspired the way performances were/are done to this day. Also MJ was a self taught tap dancer which is why he was able to get onto his toes like that. Check some of his older videos out on YT. 👍

MJ single handed made the "moonwalk" a popular part of pop culture with this live performance. We were all doing it in the streets back in the day during 'popping' and 'breaking' battles, but that was only among the brothers in the black neighborhoods, but MJ gave it that 'crossover' appeal like only MJ could. After this performance, everybody around the world was doing the moonwalk. Ah, we so miss you, Michael!

Even before the 80's and break dance, Michael was influenced and study dancers and singers like James Brown, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis Jr and other performers.

While Michael Jackson did not invent the moonwalk dance move, this is the first time he ever performed it live and he did rename it the moonwalk. He was literally such a naturally talented person, he could do almost anything and it was amazing and started a trend. There will never be another Michael Jackson. RIP
