Michael Jackson’s song, “Beat It”, Eddie Van Halen played his guitar(Frankenstein) as a favorite to Quincy Jones. He didn’t want to take credit for it & then, the song & whole “Thriller “ album was so huge, everyone wanted to know who was playing the guitar solo on “Beat It”. The secret was let out.
Here is what Eddie said in 2011 - "I said to myself, 'Who is going to know that I played on this kid's record, right? Nobody's going to find out.' Wrong!" he laughs. "Big-time wrong. It ended up being Record of the Year." And Considering the game-changing impact the song had on popular culture Eddie said in 2011 that "Beat It" is his favorite collaboration. Eddie Van Halen concluded MJ was a musical genius with this childlike innocence. He was such a professional, and such a sweetheart.💖
Eddie told a funny story in an interview about right after "Beat It" came out. He was browsing in a record store while "Beat It" was playing in the store and he overheard some kids talking & saying something to the effect of "who the hell is this guitarist trying to play like Eddie Van Halen?" So, Eddie walked up behind them, tapped them on the shoulder and said "actually, that was me", and then walked away. Can you imagine how those kids' heads were blown? LOL I love that story.
Not only that, he restructured the middle of the song so it would work better for his solo. He was worried what MJ would think, but MJ loved it and thanked him for not just mailing it in, but actually making an effort to make the song better. I don't think he got credit for it either and didn't care, he just did it because that's who EVH was.

I watched this on TV when it was LIve, with my good friend and her three young girls. We were electrified, and not just by Michael..just so many great Motown singers. I've never forgotten it. I loved Billie Jean even before this performance from the video.
Eddie Van Halen did the guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Instead of asking for tons of money, he did it in exchange for a case of beer and some dancing lessons. He also completely reworked the middle of the song while MJ was taking a break. It’s Brilliant! ❤️
Don't close your eyes you'll miss the Moonwalk Mikey does, that Man could more dance moves than you can count 😁 damn he was smooth as glass when he was dancing.

It's amazing how iconic this video is. Every single movement, every single gesture is iconic. Any time you see anybody imitating Michael's dance moves, they're imitating everything he does in this video. It's hard for people who didn't live through the 80s and 90s to understand just what an international sensation Michael was.

Television was the only medium to see stars back in the early 80's (no internet, social media etc.) We had not seen MJ perform for a few years as he was busy recording his Thriller Album. This was our first time seeing him perform like this. We were all blown away. This was the first time the world was exposed to Michael Jackson. This was a special moment in history.
I was twelve when this aired on TV and it was all everyone talked about for a week. He lost his popularity later, but this is where he claimed his throne, before this he was moderately popular with the RnB crowd, and people loved him as a kid in the Jackson five, but this performance cemented him in the charts for a decade. Most people, and I guess I mean middle white America had never seen anyone dance like this and the moonwalk looked supernatural.
@Brad What R U Gonna Do after the child sex scandals in the early nineties, and his reclusive nature, yes, in America, his popularity waned. He still has die hard fans, but a great percentage lost interest leading to his financial problems as well.
@@mikefetterman6782 Correct! That's why there was no promotion of Blood on Dance Floor ( the best selling Remix Album of all time but many of US folks are Stranger to this album even to this day) in US. But regarding his Financial issue the problem arises due to his extravagant spending Inspite of not working. After History he released his last Studio Album Invincible (6 years later in 2001) & never did a Tour , not to forget the Album Release coincided with his feud with Sony which stopped the promotion. Which followed by 2003 documentary & Subsequent Allegation that Resulted in 2005 Court Trial in which he was Vindicated ✌️. Rest is the History. So basically his active(at fullest) career was till 1997. Last 10 years of his life was a hell.
Then you have to talk why he "lost" his popularity, what I doubt. After the success of Thriller and buying the Beatles catalog the industrie and the media tried with all their power to destroy this man. No other artist or should I say no other man was treated so cruel and unfair. No other artist had survived the allegations in 1993 and hit the world with the masterpiece HIStory. No other artist had survived the allegations and trial of 2005, to come back, without having new music, no promotion to sell out 50 concerts in only a few hours. And don't tell me he was not popular in the US. Look what happened after he died. Some people wanted that he stayed for ever the dancer and singer of the Jacksons and Thriller and hated all the amazing things he did after Thriller.
@@lieschenm1069 I was talkng years after thriller and McCartney and he bought and sold the Beatles catalog back and forth a few times. When Jackson was broke he sold it back. I was not judging or knocking him, just by the late eighties his numbers in charts waned, his hits were less frequent and the reclusiveness and surgeries turned a lot of people away. Anyone can still be his fan if they want. I still like his older music. McCartney and the Widows own the Beatles catalog now and since the Anthology series came out twenty five years ago.
I was a kid when this aired. I remember there being so much buzz going around that Mike was going to moonwalk live...and watching it, the way he kept teasing it, building the audience anticipation...and then FINALLY hits it, along with two other classic Mike poses, all in a row. It blew the roof off. I remember thinking “how can a person just float like that, it’s magic!”

Dude, I remember seeing this when it was first aired watching TV with my girlfriend and BOTH of us were enthralled and what the heck's the word? ignited! Holy Moses! AND! I met him in 1990 when I was working at Universal Studios working at Studio Stars restaurant, which was the flagship restaurant there. He was having lunch with Steven Spielberg and Macaulay Culkin in the VIP room, which was a small dining room off the main restaurant. I was what was called a Lead and he came into the server's station, by himself! white glove and all, and told me the VIP room was really hot and could I do something to correct it, he was right, that room was having AC problems, and could he have a bottle of spring water. So I brought him a bottle of water. He said Thank you and went back into the room. Despite all the weird rumors I found him a gentle soul so I've always had a hard time buying into all that crap.

The reason professional singers/dancers can sing and dance at the same time is because in both disciplines, proper coaching trains you to breathe correctly, differently to how we breathe in normal life.
I Just LOVE Michael Jackson. He is AWESOME. I love your reaction. It's fitting you are wearing an Eddie Van Halen Shirt as he played the guitar solo on Beat It! :)

I watched this when it aired 34 Springs ago, and everybody's jaws hit the floor! I was 18 at the time, and was excited because I watched "The Jackson Five" cartoon every Saturday morning in the 70s. I'm a metalhead, but MJ was a legend to younger baby boomers, and early GenXers. It brings tears to my eyes to watch him hit the Moonwalk every time I see it. I feel at a loss to describe his dancing, because it transcends human words! Love it! Eddie Van Halen didn't just play on "Beat It", he played on Janet Jackson's "Black Cat". Good stuff! 🤘💖
I recorded the 25th anniversary of Motown, and then wore that VHS tape out! watching this over and over. Michael was done being a group and only agreed to do this special with his brothers if BG promised him a solo at the end. How can you have a Motown celebration without the Jackson 5? So, yes MJ got his spot. Michael may have come off all meek and mild, but he knew, he absolutely knew what he had and just how to drop his bomb on us!! Gene Kelly was watching that night and called Jackson after, his reaction was the same as all of the world watching that night "What the fuck was that???" Michael was beyond special, beyond talented, he was the King of Pop!
You are correct to say there will never be another MJ...... The amount of talent this man possessed is off the charts. He innovated every part of music. Vocal arrangements, dancing, his band is the tightest shit around. If MJ doesn't give someone chills they may not be human.
I can tell by the look on your face when you paused toward the end that you feel exactly the way that I feel about Michael Jackson. He should be remembered for being the world's best entertainer of all time and nothing else.
the person who taught Michael how to do the moonwalk is Jeffrey Daniels who was in the group Shalamar and he was also a Soul Train dancer! Eddie van halen and Michael Jackson were good friends! Eddie played guitar for Michael on beat it. the guitar solo on that is EVH!
@@tanyadavis6921 Yes I too think so. But since MJ's name always opens the Pandora Box for publicity everybody wants to associate their name with MJ. Recently Bobby brown claimed he taught the MOONWALK.

I was watching the night this aired on television. It was a great tribute show that featured a laundry list of great artists, but this was a showstopper. Besides being one of the great songs off the album I believe this performance pushed the sales even higher on an already huge album. Of course Michael's popularity from this point on would change his life completely. Thriller was a defining soundtrack to the 80s and his music videos changed the face of Mtv permanently.
13:20 "He's still black"... 😂 Michael had vitiligo and he was burned in a Pepsi commercial in 1985 that burned his hair and scarred his scalp. I thin that is when he got secretly addicted to dysmorphia with his constant surgeries and addictions to pain medications. This is the 25th Anniversary to the Jackson's and Motown Music. I was 7 when he did this and saw it on tv...everyone at school was trying to do the moonwalk down the halls. 😂
Is there a way you can put 30th to correct it- I just wrote a chapter (damn near) on why he should react to the 30th- he just has to- I just re-watched myself and Mr. Video HAS to see it!! Soooo much more to that performance- he’ll flip out for sure!!I just want him to get as many requests for that one as possible and know we MEAN 30th!

LOL
I love that story.
Bayou Maccabee that had to have made their year. Lol
Who knew?!! Thanks for that nugget! 🙏

Back when MTV was music videos anytime Thriller came on my then 3 year old daughter would run out and just stare at the TV mesmerized by Michael.
Eddie played on Beat It. Check it out.

Yessssss!
@Brad What R U Gonna Do There is not enough credit given to Dirty Diana or the guitar in that piece.
Supposedly, Eddie dis the Beat It solo in one take 😲
Nobody knew he was going to make that move! Not even the band. He shocked everyone!
We were all obsessed with MJ as kids !! I remember buying my Thriller album ... pants... jacket ... glove and learned a valuable lesson ... you CANNOT PERM NATURAL CURLY HAIR :) look like a bird's nest on my head for months !!
This is when everyone stayed home and watched Award Shows TV.
This was the Jackson 25th Anniversary Special. Google it. It was great!
@@reginapontes5672 Motown. I think u got mixed up with the 30th Anniversary.
We live in a time when we have to look back in time to see anything worth seeing.
I know I’m aging myself but I watched this the night it aired! My entire family went nuts and we were all dancing! It brings back very fond memories. MJ was amazing that night and for years to come. My personal favorite is “Keep It In The Closet”! Thank you Leo!!
God its still so sad he's gone. My childhood was brighter with this moment on TV.
It's amazing how iconic this video is. Every single movement, every single gesture is iconic. Any time you see anybody imitating Michael's dance moves, they're imitating everything he does in this video. It's hard for people who didn't live through the 80s and 90s to understand just what an international sensation Michael was.
April 20, 1988. Bad Tour. Rosemont Ill. I was there. Great seats! AMAZING! My husband didn't want to go but as we were walking back to our car after the concert he was yelling "Michael! My man!" :D
That searing guitar solo in Michael Jackson's Beat It is Eddie. Mike is awesome!
Yes !
I was about to say the same thing.
Two absolute legends together in one song. And Eddie did it for free too.
@@RareHarmony Yes, he would have no regret about the Fee since Eddie himself said in 2011 that "Beat it is his Favourite Collaboration". Yes!! Eddie played the guitar solo on Jackson's BEAT IT!! CRAZY!!!
I was sitting in the floor in front of the TV watching this happen and when I tell you no one saw this coming.....oh, man.
My dad was TRIPPIN tryin to figure it out.
I have no idea how you made it to your age without saying this but I'm certainly glad you did finally get to it
May 16 1983! That day the whole world was gone crazy!
In the history of music will never be a great and magical day like this!
I understand the emotion man when you stop talking.
I'm 43 and still missing him so much.
From other part of the world.
Peace brother.
What a great reaction video to watch on my 48th wedding anniversary. So much fun, so many memories, Michael's undeniable talent. I miss him, but I still got my man. For the rest of our years. Mmmmm.
Never never pass up the opportunity to see a legend perform live. You don't know what tomorrow may bring.
The King of Pop!!!!! What a loss- he was loved by all- just so tortured inside. God Rest His Soul!
Kinda makes you think About Elvis with that leg work ? 🤔
All people who worked with MJ said the same thing about MJ that he was a Gentle Childlike genius from Eddie Van Halen to Teddy Riley.
@@tammypearson989 Yes, kinda but fact is It's Even Older than Elvis but indeed Elvis Popularized this particular move.👑✌️
I moonwalked fairly quickly, when everybody saw this performance. It was a big deal then, everybody trying to do it.

@Garner 164 MJ's AUTOPSY has CONFIRMED he had VITILIGO a condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment along with it he also had discoid Lupus.Vitiligo's drastic effects on the body can cause psychological distress. That's why he used fair-colored makeup, and possibly skin-bleaching prescription creams,(Recommend by Doctors) to cover up the uneven blotches of color caused by the disease. The creams have further lightened his skin, and, with the application of makeup, he appeard very pale.Depigmentation causes a permanent and extreme sensitivity to the sun.( That's why he carried Umbrella). He also covered his skin disorder with clothing wearing long sleeves and long pants.

I've loved Micheal since I was a kid. I love him still! I was lucky to see him in concert! Fantastic! The king forever xoxo. Love you Mr. Video
Michael was also gorgeous at this time, handsome. Miss that younger Michael.
The absolute talent of Michael Jackson will never happen again. Just a one man dynasty who could do it all. Makes me so happy too see his legacy still living strong after so many have tried to ruin him.
I was a kid when this moment happened and when he did the moonwalk, we lost our minds. My brothers, white guys in parachute pants, were trying and failing to figure out how he did it. 😄 We had never seen anything like it before
The reason professional singers/dancers can sing and dance at the same time is because in both disciplines, proper coaching trains you to breathe correctly, differently to how we breathe in normal life.
Michael Jackson was the Bruce Lee of pop music.
I remember watching this Motown special live with my father--we were both sitting there in AWE of Michael Jackson. AWE.
One of the best tv moments for me as a kid. My mom had the VCR recording which she still has her VHS tapes 😂
I Just LOVE Michael Jackson. He is AWESOME. I love your reaction. It's fitting you are wearing an Eddie Van Halen Shirt as he played the guitar solo on Beat It! :)
I'm a metal head and yet MJ is still my all time favorite artist. There will never be another in my generation with that much natural talent. Incredible. I will always love him.
I remember watching this, I was in fifth grade when thriller came out and loved it, but I have enjoyed Michael since he was with his brothers. Sch a Amazing talented man. Rest in peace Mr. Jackson.
Motown 25 year special and he stole the show with this performance! Fred Astaire called him and asked how he did the moonwalk! Best dance and singer ever! Period
I always say I bet heaven sounds BEAUTIFUL with all those talented people gone too soon.
MJ was just one year older than me and I fell in love with his singing and dancing the very first time I saw him. I heard on one documentary that he would watch street dancers and incorporate his choreography ideas with some of their moves, and of course he loved Fred Astaire. So glad you did this, love the reaction🥰
MJ used to 💓 a tons of Art & Artist Including Michaelangelo, Walt Disney & Charlie Chaplin etc.
I remember seeing this when it was first on tv and the whole world went crazy! Absolutely Love Michael Jackson
I was 18 when this happened. We all went crazy and spent the summer learning how to moon walk. Great memories!

“Oh, he‘s still Black”! LOL You’re too funny.
He was so handsome here!
I was just watching Michael Jackson's "Thriller" during Halloween yesterday. He was such a brilliant artist, and a legend.
I will admit to occasionally doing a loose impression of the Moonwalk. There is only one Michael Jackson. Often imitated, never duplicated.
👊✌❤
Mr Video, you were in your feelings there for a second toward the end. I get it, it's been a long day. Eddie RIP, reminiscing on Michael...it's a lot. All 💙 great vid!
Michael Jackson is the King Of Pop and always will be! Eddie Van Halen played guitar in Michael Jackson's song Beat It! Hahahahaha the best reaction EVER!
I remember watching something (I think the Motown Special) that said he messed up, which is why it was so short and was upset about it. Perfect to me. 😊
Leo- I just re-watched the 30th anniversary myself- My God! I forgot he moonwalks his “normal” way.. but also does it sideways and around in a circle with his feet! I swear it! His intro onto the stage- to huge ending to this one song performance is gonna make you EXPLODE for sure- I do everytime I watch it! I will comment this every video til you can react to that one- as much as you and we love him, you just gotta react, please- folks can come for me- I don’t give a damn-🤷🏼♀️ please, 30th anniversary- like perfection of an already great recipe- all that good seasoning!’ ❤️🤞🏼✌️✨
Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley 2 of the greatest entertainers I've ever seen.
Good stuff! 🤘💖
Watched this Motown special live and we all flipped out when MJ did the moonwalk!!
Best and coolest human in history. Thank you to MJ for all the good deeds!
You are correct to say there will never be another MJ...... The amount of talent this man possessed is off the charts. He innovated every part of music. Vocal arrangements, dancing, his band is the tightest shit around. If MJ doesn't give someone chills they may not be human.
There will never ever be another Michael Jackson! RIP King!
MJ as entertainer was in a class by himself. Definatly the greatest!! Check out his drummer, Johnathan moffett... one the best drummers ever...
I can tell by the look on your face when you paused toward the end that you feel exactly the way that I feel about Michael Jackson. He should be remembered for being the world's best entertainer of all time and nothing else.
🎼🎼😀🎤Yeah the next day everybody in seventh grade was talking about this this was really a big deal on TV 🎶🎶🎶🎶
The live version of this in London (Wembley) in 1988 is well worth a watch.
the person who taught Michael how to do the moonwalk is Jeffrey Daniels who was in the group Shalamar and he was also a Soul Train dancer! Eddie van halen and Michael Jackson were good friends! Eddie played guitar for Michael on beat it. the guitar solo on that is EVH!
This has been disbuted by Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chamber who says he taught Michael Jackson the Moonwalk. He was Turbo in the movie Breakin'

My entire family was sitting in front of the TV watching the thriller video. It was epic!
1084 Grammy awards i saw it and remember parrents letying me stay up to watch his performance, never forget it❤👏👍😃🎶
13:20 "He's still black"... 😂
This is mostly true but he stopped getting full rhinoplasties after the 80s, everything else was likely touch-ups due to his Lupus and makeup.
ye he was always black skin change dont mean he not a black male
I remember seeing this on TV, so unreal
