I don't understand a lot of you not at least APPRECIATING his amazing drumming. You have NO idea how hard it is to play what he's playing with his feet and throughout the WHOLE song. It's INSANE.
This is absolutely incredible, he can maintain such incredible precision while playing insane time signatures and poly rhythms with both his feet and hands, he is one fuckin' sick drummer.
What I love the most about this song (and I love everything) Is how it sets a new bar so fucking higher for aspects of both drums and guitar that are not the typical realm for flamboyance and technicality (shredding, and on drums arm speed) and how they did it way ahead of what's been done before: Right hand and footwork stamina and precision! Simply BRILLIANT!
This is one of my most favourite UA-cam videos ever- because it mixes the genius with the real humanity of what it takes to get THIS job done. From what I know of watching Tomas, his face is always very placid-controlled, concentrated; here, for once, he's actually wincing( during the bridge-y bit before the 1st solo) I LOVE it.
Danny Carey shouldnt even be mentioned. anytime i post in "top ten drummers" forums, I start my list at #2, because anyone with ears knows no other drummer or musician comes anywhere near carey, he is on a level of his own, no musician before or after him will ever be able to do what he has done. no question.
agronnak Hahahahahaha oh, wow... Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, better than I could ever hope to be... But Danny Carey is better than Mike Portnoy could ever dream of being... Ten times over.
For a band to be able to write this...play this...I mean it's fucking godly. That's the best I can describe it, but truthfully, no words can do this band justice.
drsteve0487, thank you for your kind words. I am actually thrilled with what I see overall in the drum community these days. Many of the youinger cats astound me. Chris Pennie, Thomas, Ray Luzier to name only 3. Frankly I do not understand a lot of the guys from my generation and older who close their eyes and ears to what is happening. The current and next generations are going to take drumming to amazing heights. Thanks again.
A drumming legend and magician. One of the greatest to EVER sit behind the kit. If his name isn’t mentioned on your list of influences, you’re not a drummer. Lol.
This was so wonderful for me. I have been a pro drummer for ages and I just got another perspective on how to approach bass drum technique. Gotta love the younger drummers!
This was the first live version, the shorter version. Tomas said in interview that they didn't even think of trying to play it live at first, then it was the sorter version and as they built up their stamina, they were able to play the entire thing. That track is so demanding even top musicians like them have to take it with baby steps lol.
wow, i really cant comprehend how insane mushggah is. im not a big fan of the actual music if that makes any sense ha but i really do appreciate the technicality of their playing and how they play in crazy ass time signatures. and this drummer is insane, this must take soooo much coordination and practice. tomas haake is deffinately one of the best drummers ive seen.
Wuuuz upppp Manzo27!!!!! Tomas is a PHUCKING MACHINE!!!!! He has a PhD in drumming! POWER HOUSE DRUMMER!! I never knew he hit so many ghost notes till this video, and 'Bleed' is the only tune He uses triggers on. Surprised no one noticed the metronome under the hihats :) It was cool as hell hanging out with the Mighty Meshuggah for 4 days and this video was from the first of four shows. Jens. Dick, Marten, Fredrik, Tomas ... Meshuggah OWNS YA'!!! Hellz Yeah!!
This is so fucking great. Haacke is one of the few drummers that I don't even bother defending when people shit on his playing. He's the fucking man, and that's that.
The ghost notes make this song so much cooler for my fellow drummers but we can also probably agree that it makes it 10 times harder to play. This man is unreal. Meshuggah: If dividing by zero had a sound.
This drum mix was probably taken via an aux from the monitor desk. Just a little "bleed" (no pun intended, honest!) of stage noise on the overheads. Awesome video. Incredible drummer, song and band. 5 stars.
Being a non drummer, the thing I find so utterly amazing is the independence between that ridiculous signature on the double bass and his arms. Awesome.
I agree. As far as I can see, this song is the ultimate in rhythmic technique for each instrument involved and when someone writes something more challenging, all shall bow down.... :)
That guy, troy wright, is by far the best youtube cover drummer I've ever seen, and he has videos of him doing his own stuff as well, and he is one hell of an amazing drummer.
I'm sure Thomas is thinking what he's going to cook for dinner, while he's playing this. I don't know, man, these guys are like they fell on earth from a totally different place & formed a metal band to fit in. Extraordinary.
@Drummerboy6able As theberzerker0 explained, there are pre recorded sound (usually of a bass drum) that is "triggered" when the bass drum is struck or hitting an electronic pad. The notes become clearer and therefore easier to decipher each individual note.
it just blows my minds-the ghost notes- while the double bass madness...i just dunno how his brain can comprehend it, i know mine cant and ive been drumming for 7 years lol
The double kick pattern really sounds like a parked Harley Davidson with the engine running.
hahah... yes
Harley riders WISH their bikes sounded that bad ass
Cheezeburger Walrus lol ok. Apparently you’ve never heard a shovel head idling
After listening to this a few times and hearing no slip-ups or mistakes whatsoever, I've concluded that Tomas Haake is a machine.
Just hearing the bass kicks makes my legs go numb.
A look inside Tomas Haakes head:
"drn d drn d drn ta drn d drn d drn d drn
-ah this is boring Imma add some ghost notes..."
Love it. Barely even breaks a sweat. The guy is a drumming legend and I feel privileged to have existed in the same era as him!
look at those calves.
look at his ghost note placement on top of that bass drum riff. this man is insane.
The lyrics in this song describe the feelings of a person listening to the song.
the craziest part is how he can manage to keep those ghost notes in this marathon smh.
Then he plays another 6 or so songs. Brutally amazing.
He gave me one of his drumsticks after their gig in Birmingham in September '08. Best moment of my life.
I don't understand a lot of you not at least APPRECIATING his amazing drumming. You have NO idea how hard it is to play what he's playing with his feet and throughout the WHOLE song. It's INSANE.
1:54 is just flawless, damn i love meshuggah lol
@iEATStehFEBREEZE hey man its a pargaon 19" china with a hhx 16" xtreme crash mounted on top like loose hats. i play a paragon and love it!
You’re a legend in itself, Troy. I don’t even like Sabian, but those paragons are amazingggg. So much sound.
this is some of the most excellently EPIC drumming i have ever seen in my life!!!
This is absolutely incredible, he can maintain such incredible precision while playing insane time signatures and poly rhythms with both his feet and hands, he is one fuckin' sick drummer.
It seems this Terminator has epilepsy.: Defective.
Amon Amarth annotation on a Meshuggah video?? :D Really?
This guy has got to be the calmest metal drummer I've seen so far.
What I love the most about this song (and I love everything)
Is how it sets a new bar so fucking higher for aspects of both drums and guitar that are not the typical realm for flamboyance and technicality (shredding, and on drums arm speed) and how they did it way ahead of what's been done before:

Simply BRILLIANT!
This is an old performance. Haake is running two rack toms.
I know your comment is 6 years old, but the video is 12 years old lol
47 fans of jordison ))
I like Joey Jordison.... Doesn't have shit on Haake though. What's your point?
Exaсtly the same,as your ,Bro ;)
Finally someone got all three aspects of drumming
1. Coordination
2. Dynamics
3. Speed

Mike Portnoy. Nuff said
nah man I love carey, he is my favourite drummer. But there's never a definitive thing like that when it comes to these great musicians.
agronnak
Hahahahahaha oh, wow... Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, better than I could ever hope to be... But Danny Carey is better than Mike Portnoy could ever dream of being... Ten times over.
FordFan197
Exactly
rastabg23
Jojo Mayer?
This song gives me goose bumps, EVERY time i listen to it...
I don't understand how someone could dislike this.
Same, I can't break it down and re-construct it in my head right...it's so well orchestrated.
Extremely solid. Very mechanical and methodical. Couldn't have been any better. Awesome drummer!
Thomas Haake, absolutely the BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!!! No doubt!!! Seriously, who put him down from the throne ??? No one!!
This takes endurance, coordination, independence, and speed. Thomas Haake has the 4 aspects of intense drumming summed up in one rhythm!
For a band to be able to write this...play this...I mean it's fucking godly. That's the best I can describe it, but truthfully, no words can do this band justice.
Just listen to that constant 4/4. It's AMAZING how he can keep that beat with all that chaos going on on the bass.
That is just unbelievable talent, practice, and inner sense of timing. Incredible drummer, wow.
very nice vid.. thanx for uploading !
you'll definitely need a bottle of water and a towel after playing that. hell i needed one and i was just watching.
So wonderful to listen to.
Love the pure sound of these drums
drsteve0487, thank you for your kind words.

Mr. Haake, I bow down to you.
PERFECTION!
this guys a machine, awsome
A drumming legend and magician. One of the greatest to EVER sit behind the kit. If his name isn’t mentioned on your list of influences, you’re not a drummer. Lol.
So awesome.
The wonderful thing about this is that the piece is so epic, yet Tomas is soooo relaxed. It's the only way to fly...
This was so wonderful for me. I have been a pro drummer for ages and I just got another perspective on how to approach bass drum technique.
Gotta love the younger drummers!
crazy shit man!!
you the man!
\\m// this is insane stuff....just watched meshuggah live at Bangalore last weekend....
was waiting for this song...\\m//
his pedal work on this song is some of the craziest shit ive every seen
amazing

Dude he just became my new favourite drummer ^^

fav drummer of all time, ever.

I think he's feet are indeed bleeding now.
Musicians like these are a big inspiration for me.

my favourite drummer :) he's so awsome
this dude is incredible
hes nuts. love that snare sound
Joeys ok. He's really really REALLY fast, but this is a different level of musical creativity and writing. These guys invent time signatures.
probably the most insane video on youtube.
he's almost calm when he plays, thats awesome.
Tomas says in an interview that in concerts he uses a trigger on the drums, but imagine him recording those drums on studio... He is a beast...
he is one of the fastest and best drumers in world that is pure fact
amazing
That is sick.
the singing sounds awesome in this video !!
such a badass song
I'm sure Thomas is thinking what he's going to cook for dinner, while he's playing this. I don't know, man, these guys are like they fell on earth from a totally different place & formed a metal band to fit in. Extraordinary.
lol he looks so relaxed, like he's just kinda tapping along to the beat, meanwhile he does some of the most amazing drumming of all time.
love the snare
Damn!!! He is a machine!!!
I am amazed.
what a beast!!
@Drummerboy6able As theberzerker0 explained, there are pre recorded sound (usually of a bass drum) that is "triggered" when the bass drum is struck or hitting an electronic pad. The notes become clearer and therefore easier to decipher each individual note.
ah man fucking neat!
He such an amazing drummer, biggest inspiration I've ever heard!
Dude is UNREAL.
Haake is just amazing.
leave it at that.
Everything went perfect! They are playing at Metaltown in Sweden in about a week!
The fact that he's not using triggers makes me happy.
Just fucking awesome! Haake is incredible man

wow! awesome!
@wrightdrums nice thanks, it sounds great, has a unique sound it seems

My friend who is a metal head showed me this guy, I like hard style music...no doubt this guy is fuckin sick!!!! BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!
it just blows my minds-the ghost notes- while the double bass madness...i just dunno how his brain can comprehend it, i know mine cant and ive been drumming for 7 years lol
