@@niclastname Bleed is a great song, but it isn`t a good song for introducing people to Meshuggah, but if you introduce someone to Meshuggah through Bleed and they like it, then you can be very certain that their going to like the vast majority of Meshuggah`s discography.
In reference to it feeling like a headache, the original title for the track was aneurism and was meant to be the audio equivalency of having a brain aneurysm. The drummer, Thomas haak, had to adjust his entire drumming technique in order to learn the rhythm and the drumming for this song was done last as it was more challenging than the entire rest of the record. His words not mine of Wikipedia fact or fiction loud wire.
Yeah problem was the drums were build by the writer on program, was insane for a normal drummer to perform this in reality. Alone the little "hertas" playing constantly and switching rythm back and forth.
The aneurism is really symbolic and you can "feel" it. The constant sweeling up and down, keeping on crushing you, increasing and down, slower and the cycle keeps on repeating. Driving you insane slowly...i really think that is the hell for people with a longlife ear ringing. You only have 2 options, get insane or headbanging to your grave with insane neck musculus maximus.

Actually this is solid, he’s said that in interviews. And something about he had damaged nerves, so his feet and something work a lil differently. Kinda crazy, when you can do that and have some condition that would stop a drummer, but yet he figured it out. A lot of respect. Sorry edit, but he is one of the best metal drummer right now. You guys should check out the video where, Bill Burr talking about his first time watching em live, and Danny Carey among another musician watching this song live. He said at one part Danny, was like “wtf” 😂 idk. But a cool thing to listen to Bills story of watching this band the first time, and musicians just impressed. after another reaction of meshuggah. kinda like the tool thing but different. Love you guys, great vids as always🤙🤙

Meshuggah's music is so deliberate, I haven't met anyone in the music industry that doesn't consider them geniuses, regardless if they like their music or not.
The simple fact that I don't like their style doesn't take away their brilliance. They're at the top of their craft. It's just way too intense for me.

Meshuggah, like a lot of progressive metal, is so totally focused on craft over anything else. Whatever you think of the music, it's clearly virtuoso skill level.
I already love their music, but I love when so,some can show my feeble brain why it’s more than I’m hearing. For instance, the guy on here that has a whole series of Meshuggah’s riffs and solos on the trumpet. I’d have never heard the jazz influences on my own.
When Tool's album "Lateralus" came out, my friend/bandmate at the time and I were also really into Meshuggah. As soon as we heard the first track off Lateralus on his car stereo, we both looked at each other and said, "They've been listening to Meshuggah!"
Sure enough, a few months later they announced they were bringing Meshuggah on tour with them.
That really made Meshuggah's career. They went from being a rather underground band to getting mainstream recognition.
Considering that Tool specifically asked their management to book Meshuggah to tour with them, I think it is fair to say that both Danny Carey and Thomas Haake have deep respect for one another. After all, "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery."
Also, I didn't see anyone else mention it in the comments, so I'll state it here: Meshuggah is a Yiddish word that means "crazy."

Good analogy about the hammering of one note. This is not just challenging for the drummer. Trying to pick this on guitar for 7 agonizing minutes is just fucked.
I just find it crazy that Bleed, being so unrepresentative of Meshuggah's writing style, somehow became their most popular and "reacted to" song. It's the "Nothing Else Matters" equivalent in the extreme metal realm.

Once I saw an interview with their drummer Thomas Haake, who said ob in obzen comes from the Latin prefix ob-, which means ‘anti’ or ‘the contrary of’.
So ObZen is anti-zen. The opposite of Zen.
It’s kind of funny to use the Latin prefix to go along Zen,
which is ancient Japanese, but the outcome means what it means and the sound remind you of ‘obscene’, which their music is in the most rhythmic way possible.
Two quick things:
1) You both should have a Podcast.
2) Judson should make you react to Classical / Jazz Music as well.

It's so weird to imagine people not liking metal. Like, I get they exist in large numbers, but it's still so foreign to me. I've gotten so into it all.
Part of Meshuggah's appeal is this deliberate monotony. Bleed is the best example of this. This one-note repetition that Judson refers to, comparing it to a jackhammer, is a very purposeful part of Meshuggah's sound: The stark harmonic context, the almost drone-like melodies, are there to plant the listener's attention down. The relentless rhythms work together to that effect. The very low notes on the guitars add to the "lack" of melody, and the songs become something like rhythmic, aggressive... mantras. It is well known that many of Meshuggah's (and relevant artists') fans refer to their music as ...meditative (myself included).
Yeah the "Zen" in the title of the album is intentional, it's supposed to be sort of hypnotic
I heard a non metalhead refer to music once as "the last magic on Earth" and this song is a great representation of that mentality. A shaman in trance, but it's Bleed instead of a drum circle.

I’d like to suggest again that you show him “fermented offal discharge” by necrophagist. With the strong classical influence the band took a as well as what many would call “the best guitar solo in metal” it’d be interesting to hear what he thinks about the song from a compositional, classically trained perspective. Rather than the technical one that many fans likely see it from.
The Necrophagist solo might be impressive from a purely technical standpoint ( just listened to it now ), but is nowhere NEAR the best solos in Metal. All it feels like is "flexing of muscles", with no true soul, presence and atmosphere.
The best solos, in my opinion, are the ones from Dancers to a Discordant System by Meshuggah, and, another that rings a bell is Machine Head's Halo :) Both are incredibly atmospheric - first one feels cosmic and eerie, second one is soaked and steeped in emotion and inner pain. THAT is what an "impressive solo" should be in my book.

I just saw them live in Grand rapids Michigan last night. They actually played "bleed" last night for the first time since 2017 that I know of. It was my second time seeing them. It was an excellent show. I'm very sore today LOL getting old but I can still. 🤘
They played Bleed in 2018 and 2019 as well but then they stopped playing shows until last year and only brought Bleed back to their setlist on this past tour

I had never heard of them before, and got the opportunity to see them as an opening act for System of a Down in 2001. It was epic, and morphed my idea of heavy music tremendously. When they came out, we thought they were the roadies for the next band though 😂.
I just saw them in Seattle on Black Friday. They played Bleed and Demiurge as their encore. It was great. I also was sore for a couple days after the show. 🤘😁👍
I was also at the grand rapids show but mainly went to see In Flames and Whitechapel. I wasn't too familiar with Meshuggah but it didn't take long for me to understand why they were the main headliner. They were absolutely insane.
Future Breed Machine is a popular one that has some good vibes midway through. I think the pianist might enjoy that track a bit more.

Co-signed! Destroy Erase Improve is still my favorite album to this day, but I have to admit I pretty much love everything from them. Their last three albums have been excellent.
He would enjoy Gods Of Rapture even more, it has that fusion sounding solo section.

Meshuggah..It's exhausting to listen to sometimes, offputting, yet somehow it can pull you in. I think Break Those Bones That Sinews Gave Motion would be a good next one.

You should definitely get him to check out other songs. Despite being a top tier song, I don't think Bleed is the best song for introducing someone to Meshuggah especially given it's a one of a kind song within their catalogue. Demiurge or Rational Gaze are a lot easier to digest or even Born in Dissonance and the title track, Obzen, which I'd say has a nice mix of the slower sludgier parts and the fast paced bits like Bleed.
Yeah, OK, I'll say it: Bleed is overrated and does drag on for a fair bit. I appreciate the stamina and limb independence skill cap is high, but it could easily have been 3 minutes shorter and not lost any of it's oomph.
If Judson found Bleed monotonous, he'll probably think the same of Demiurge and especially Born in Dissonance (As much as I love both).
I actually feel a great entry track to Meshuggah would be Do Not Look Down. Plenty of movements melodically and the typical syncpation/polyrhythm mindbuggery happening while also pretty short and succinct.

I totally know what he means about the repetitive sound being like a jackhammer. When I was new to Meshuggah, this stuff was exhausting. Then, once I knew the structure of the song and that their time signatures are almost always 4/4, it really started to click and didn't just sound like a constant assault on the eardrums.

i certainly don't disagree with the 'monotonous' description lol, but i think that's what my brain likes about it! i love seeing different people's reactions to music. many folks would understandly find this jarring and discombobulating. seems to have opposite effect for me. the speed, repetition and dissonance i find soothing and comforting. 🥰

You're right. It's not monotonous, it's repetitive, in a hypnotic kind of way. I saw an interview with Tomas Haake where he explained that the repetition in their music is very much intentional, because you get in a sort of hypnotic state because of it.

Nothing is funnier to me than seeing a trained musician of any sort hearing Meshuggah and watching them become physically confused on the timing.
It's certainly confusing why people would listen to a song that goes nowhere interesting for that long haha. Meshuggah has way better songs, but people like to watch reactions to Bleed because "bro the drums are difficult!".

Meshuggah are really amazing. First of all, I've never seen someone talking shit about them. When I was still playing shows I would make a habit of going up for the opening bands and be sure to show my support. I would headbang, mosh, you name it. One night, I was moshing and my knee got stepped on sideways, and I went down. Didn't injure myself but I had to go on stage with a crazy banged up knee. The whole show I stood stock still, glued to my mic stand, scared to even shift my weight in case I fell over. That was the day I decided I was done moshing.
This song, however, is on my list of exceptions. If i ever end up at a Meshuggah show, I will throw myself at this song.

I feel this one man. When I used to work retail I was unloading freight and very randomly I turned but my knee didn't and all I hear was a click noise my knee completely gave in. I was heavily into smoking pot at the time so I couldn't go to the hospital for fear of failing the immediate drug screen they always give. It was a strange experience because it didn't hurt but I kept waiting for the rush of pain that did eventually hit me a little while later. I took myself to the local hospital after work to make sure I didn't do any damage he said the cartilage in my knee was all fucked up so yah I should probably find a different job otherwise I will have knee surgery probably within the next 3-5 years.
Seeing them in 2 weeks, apparently on this tour the encore is bleed and demiurge. I feel like I should just stretch the rest of the show and prepare for the encore pit lol

I feel like his ability to dissect a song on his first listen is amazing. I have to hear albums like 10 times, with all songs in memory, before I can analyze anything about it. He just notices that stuff so fast.
I feel ‚dissect‘ is a bit much. What did he actually say there? IMO not that much apart from „this and that was cool“..
@@2freet I'm not talking about his opinion. He seems to try and be pretty objective. I'm talking about how he notices so many intricacies in the song. Obviously anyone would notice the main rhythmic pattern, but he notices the variations of it, and very subtle things like the octave note that only joins the pattern for like one verse. Also he can pretty much instantly find the key and melody of the song, which is not as easy as you might think. Find a song that you've never heard before, listen to it once, and then when you're done, try and list 5 things about its rhythm/melody/structure. Extra hard if you pick a Meshuggah song.
i dont wanna be that guy, but those are basic skills of any decent musician. it's a big part of their job. what do you think a session player is expected to do when he has to learn a repertoir of several songs on very short notice, sometimes in the rehearsal? whip out pen and paper and analyse the song for half an hour to find it's key? and the rest you listed...hell, even i can do that easily and i'm nowwhere near the level of any of those guys in a million years. @@DM-pv4rw
There's a difference between a music lover/listeners ear to a musicians ear to a classically trained musicians ear. Musicians listen to what's happening musically and break down what's happening as opposed to the aesthetics of how the overall sound is presented. Basically a musician can identify skills and ingenuity and pay props even though they might not be into the style
brand new to the channel so I dont really know what music you guys usually play, but id personally love to see you guys analyze car bomb’s “lights out” or frontierer’s “heirloom”. theyre both extremely complex songs (mathcore); basically this but more intense and confusing.
also, not very similar to bleed, but any of paledusk’s more recent releases would be interesting as well.

It's great to see the Meshuggah fan actually bobbing his head and smiling at the heaviness. Brings a tear of joy to my eye.
Completely understand where you are coming from, Judson. It took me a while to get into them, now they are a good band to unwind with, for me.
I hope you guys will do more from this band as they are one of the more unique bands out there. A song like Rational Gaze or Nebulous would be very interesting.

I never know if I enjoy this song or not, it’s really a mood song it can sound amazing one day & gets your head banging but on another you wonder why you put it on as you feel a headache coming on.
I can't really enjoy it since every time I put it on, I'm not really listening to it as much as I am studying it.
I feel that with music in general.
Mood/context can drastically alter the effect of a song.
the pianists' little improvisation in the beginning got me 100% invested in his perspective.

Solid band tbh. Those guys and The Forsaken kinda get lost in the shuffle. Nothing really groundbreaking, but good stuff.
"We are the Sleep" is one of my favorite songs I return to every couple months, and it stays in my head for a week afterward.

It's amazing how deliberate Meshuggah's music is. His description is basically what they were going for lol What is feels like to have an aneurysm. And the infamous pattern is called the "herta" and while it shares similarity with a triplet form it actually is RL-R-L (8th note and 1/4 note). In repetition the bar crossovers end up making it feel like triplets.
Oh man I've been waiting for some Meshuggah. So many songs to recommend, I'd love to see They Move Below

Its definitely one of those bands you just gotta see live to really get it. It's insane hahaha
Especially with the light tech being part of the band, and doing an insanely complicated light show live. Now, Meshugga is not a band I listen to on the regular, aside from having Bleed in one of my play lists. And a whole show is a bit much meshugga for me. But I am still glad I went to the show, just to experience the extremely cool vibe.
I just got into Meshuggah a year ago and the closest they are getting to me is a 3 hour drive away. So many of you have told me that is an easy drive considering how awesome the show will be. I'm stoked.

Meshuggah is perhaps the most intriguing band out there. There's been a lot of jazz fusion influence in their sound, unless I'm mistaken, since forever. The vocal is "hermetic", "straight", "colorless". But I consider it a bold, avant-garde, interesting, disconcerting, intriguing sound. But it's not a "fun" sound to listen to, it's very "cerebral", like playing chess, I don't know. The current Sepultura I find much more interesting, and also has very complex arrangements and songs, but, of course, they are very different styles. Anyway, I can't come to the conclusion whether I like Meshuggah or not. But I recognize that they have a unique, "special" sound, not necessarily "catchy". OK, the band has excellent musicians and a drummer, Tomas Haake, who is impressive, although Sepultura's drummer Eloy Casagrande is superior for certain subtle details. The person who had the courage to take on this was the exceptional drums/percussion and performance specialist of drummers, Andrew Rooney, from New Zealand, who is also a very nice person...

Jens adds a lot of emotions and texture to Meshuggah`s music. But for a beginner for listening to Meshuggah, it can help to view Jens as simply an extention of Tomas Haake`s drumming.
I personally love Meshuggah i think they are one of the most important metal bands in the entire history of metal and they are the band most responsible for the modern sound of metal.

I know and have Meshuggah's records since their first LP in 1991 "Contradictions Collapse", when the band had a clear influence from Metallica, and was also influenced by jazz fusion. Why have several people already liked my main message??? I and everyone who liked my post would be "wrong"??? Of course not!!! If you revere Meshuggah, that's fine. But even the current Sepultura is superior, more interesting, has a more dynamic, more "colorful" sound. Meshuggah's sound is indeed "cerebral", "hermetic", which is not "fun", "catchy", the vocalist has a "straight" style, "without colors", but they are excellent musicians, a band that can be considered "avant-garde", "unique", "disconcerting", and that it has an impressive drummer, but I have already highlighted that it is a fact that Eloy Casagrande (Sepultura) is superior due to several subtle details. If you want to accept this counterpoint, this plausible, reasonable dissenting opinion: great. Another suggestion for analysis, reaction, musically far superior in all aspects compared to this Meshuggah song: Death "Symbolic" (from the 1995 album "Symbolic"). Absurd thing in every way, in every aspect. Progressive Death Metal Elite!!!

the trick to grasping meshuggah early on is that time keeping hand on the drums. that often sits at a nice 4/4 head nod and gives theur tracks the groove.
I would say this lands solidly in the groove metal category. Solid chunky groove the entire track. Reminiscing some of the Far Beyond Driven album or even some Ashes Of The Wake type of Grooves
That double kick pattern is VERY Vinnie, almost like Becoming with that almost off time kick
