- In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges prominent Israeli historian Benny Morris on his support for Israel’s war on Gaza, the history around the founding of Israel and the Nakba.
Morris’ book ‘The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949’ dismantled many of the myths behind the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians during that period. His critics, however, say he now justifies many of those crimes.
Hasan and Morris are joined by a panel of three experts:
Diana Buttu - a Palestinian lawyer and former advisor for the PLO
Daniel Levy - a former Israeli peace negotiator and current President of the US/ Middle East Project
Emmanuel Navon - an International Relations lecturer at Tel Aviv University

He's technically correct. Hospitals have not been destroyed by aerial bombs. But they have been hit by shelling, especially in cases where there has been active combat in the viscinity of hospitals or in the hospitals themselves. There has been ample evidence that Hamas has operated from within hospitals - maybe not as giant command centers, but they are definitely using them.

Having fought as an infantryman in the Vietnam War, I know that you don’t conduct insurgencies by dropping 2,000-pound bombs and white phosphorus munitions on masses of civilians. If that is your battlefield doctrine, then it is obvious that your intent is genocidal.
When my unit made contact inside villages, we could not call in artillery or air strikes and had to rely on helicopter gunships for precision targeting to avoid civilian deaths. My unit had to do the job the hard way by taking casualties while searching in the hooches, trenches, tunnels, and bunkers to get each enemy combatant with as few collateral deaths as possible. But the IDF’s target is the people.
How can you say such things against the most moral army in the world? I am of course emulating the stupidest views of IDF defenders. There really is no logical explanation other than they simply do not care about dead people. Israelis use so called Hanibal directive. They are allowed to use whatever force they want and kill their own people if necessary. It is not debated in the west but it is public knowledge in other parts of the world. They would rather kill their own people if there is a chance they would be captured. It is completely mental. If they do this to their own people, clearly they do not care what they are doing to their enemies.

The invasion of Gaza is not an "insurgency," nor a "counterinsurgency." It's a full-blown war. If you fought in the Vietnam War, you know that intensive bombing was part of that war as well. The US used both white phosphorous bombs and 2,000 lb. bombs in Vietnam, and while estimates of civilian deaths in the war vary, it was probably 1-3 million. That's on the order of the entire population of Gaza, not the 2% of the population that Hamas says has been killed in the current war. You participated in a war that killed on the order of 50x as many civilians as the war in Gaza -- do you accuse yourself and the US of "g-cide?"

No, what he says is that the ethnic cleansing took part in the context of the 1948 War. The Arabs were trying to wipe out the Jews, either kill them or remove them. Israelis were trying to do the same. Well, Israel won. If Palestinians didn't want to be removed, maybe they shouldn't have started that war. They literally were offered a state of their own, but they rejected that because they couldn't accept the existence of a Jewish state. It's laughable to me that one would attack their neighbor but then be surprised that this neighbor would expel them. And remember the Arabs would have done the same if not worse. Furthermore, the majority of the 700,000 had fled as is normal in war. Most were not forcibly expelled

As a single, unimportant citizen of this country, there is realistically not much we can do to alter U.S. policy. But I hope I can convince you to vote. If you can convince two others to vote, then they each convince two others to vote, eventually it will make a difference. This is a generational fight that neither of us can win if we just give up if the next elections doesn't go our way. Politicians only care about votes, because votes=money. If we can prove that they will lose enough votes for their policies, they will change, but it won't happen in one cycle. It takes persistence. Keep voting brother, not just for president, but all the way down, Senator, State Representative, City Council, School Board, etc.

I think he means that he does not know what they mean by saying “famine”. In everyday language famine encompasses much more than the strict scientific definition of famine. For exemple, malnutrition is not the same as famine, and famine is not the same as starvation, etc.

This is a complex issue. It’s unfortunate that Palestinians and Israelis are is in this position. As an unbiased observer the gentleman seemed knowledgeable and I believe had correct context to the situation at least in the beginning of this video where I’m making this statement. Israel didn’t start this particular chain of events even though there are some causal factors leading up to it. How they’re choosing to prosecute a war is wrong and if the people had it they’re way Netanyahu likely would not be in power. That is the truth. I also don’t like crowds in the situation because it gives an unfair advantage to the observer if there is an overwhelming bias. Hamas is the true enemy here and it’s not said enough. It’s also not said enough that Palestinian voices are being diminished and they’re being killed by an enemy while being held hostage by their own. It’s also not said enough that Netanyahu is not a representation of most people in Israel. I hope peace and reason will win the day, in a world of ignorance and war.
The best comment I have seen here. How Israel is conducting the war is wrong and is not working. However Hamas is the true evil and they don't care about the Palestinian people at all. I think the UN made a grave mistake in giving the same vote to Palestinians and Israelis as the rest of the world on resolution where both parties were actually going to live out the consequences. This meant that only one party can agree in spite of the other and the resolution still passes. This in itself is a grave mistake because you can’t force sovereignty on land merely on the basis of such a vote. Not that it would’ve been right to do so without the agreement of both parties, but the UN didn’t have some kind of international military to enforce the resolution either.

For example there was the province of Beirut which included present day Haifa. There was no overarching name for the region as Palestine outside western sources. The Arabs never called it that, defining themselves by clan and village or simply Arab and Muslim, until modern times, borrowing Palestine and the concept of the nation state from the British and the west who named it that based on older sources that have nothing to do with the Arabs and Islam. For instance the area of the Turkish Empire that was taken over by the British in the east they named the British Mandate for Mesopotamia-also an ancient western term for the region, but not a native one. When the Arabs achieved independence there, they changed it to Iraq. Yet you see no one protesting about how the name was originally Mesopotamia and now there is a fake new country called Iraq, yet this is the same process that happened with Palestine changing to Israel and also with the creation of Jordan as well, the latter also a new country founded by outsiders (the Hashemites) on top of native tribes, also created by the British, with a parallel Balfour-type declaration that gave those lands to these outside foreigners (the Hashemites) to come in and take over.
