wait dielectric grease insulates, its supposed to at least, because dielectric means electrically insulating but magnetically "permissive". You described your friend hitting the Alternator with a Hammer and it working better, to me it sounds like that was a connection problem which improved by impact and vibration. I have not done such work yet but what i'm reading is that you should if possible connect it first, and then coat it with dielectric grease. A guide for motorboats said for connectors where this is not possible, for example the small connector on the alternator with pins, they say to apply liberally on both male and female sides of the connector, this confuses me a bit still but they say it still connects. But i think for the power connection to the battery it increases the connection resistance and hinders the alternator, or battery from working properly.
I went to research but admittadly its still a bit confusing to me since the marketing on products seems to not be clear, from what i have gathered there are non conductives greases like this dielectric, then there are conductive greases that have copper powder in them (which you shouldn't us because that corrodes the lead in the battery).
I'm still pretty new to all this, all i knew was that dielectric was an insulator, but contrary to what i first thought, dielectric grease seems to be good for the job. There also seem to be specific "battery pole grease" which might be better.
Nevermind that, i liked seeing you remove it and explain every step, made it seem not intimidating and if a car i own has a problem with its battery i might follow along. Nice vid man, thanks
Glad you found it helpful. The dialectic grease does not affect the conductivity between the battery poles and cables but helps wick moisture away and prevent corrosion of the lead. The alternator was just and old truck, the windings inside get messed up over time and heat cycles of usage and sometimes you just gotta replace it and that’s all it needed.
You're 100% right, dielectric grease is NON CONDUCTIVE. it absolutely should not be used on the contact surfaces/poles of the battery/cables etc. However it IS good for putting on the outside to help protect them from corrosion.

C 20 battery is March of 2020
Are you sure that’s not signifying Deep Cycle (C20 vs C10 shows 200 amp hour vs 100)? I’ve always seen battery manufacturer date stickers as a round sticker with 3/20 for example to mean march 2020. So these stickers from my research denoted its discharge/charge rating. These batteries have the large date sticker up top that’s supposed to be hole punched for the month/ year but they’re so worn I can’t read them.
