Mr Farmer, Thank you for posting this. I have been watching a lot of yt vids on the Ram 2500 diesel for help with my problems. You are the best! You have a natural talent and are kind enough to get good camera angles, talk through certain issues we may have, and remind us not to skip certain steps. The qualities of a great teacher.
That's how you make a how to video. Clear, non jumpy well lit camera shots. To the point with clear instruction and why things are done this way, no babbling, no monotone voice, tips and tricks. Everything you need, nothing you don't. All done without the whole " smash the like and subscribe buttons" speech. Not that I need to know how to change oil but would definitely refer to your video as best explanation. Good job!
Glad it helped, ur gonna love that truck....fyi...if it's an automatic..and you start having transmission shift issues...like jumping from overdrive back to 3rd...there is a silly little wire that comes off the alternator that somehow gets interference on it...strap or zip tie it up behind the tube that feeds the air cleaner..some have also wrapped it in aluminum foil...this will solve the issue for a while....it's a known issue on every automatic gen 2 5.9 if ya don't have the problem...you will! Don't get raked through the coals by a trans shop!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I will take that advise so far I havnt had that problem second gen is my dream truck. I like them better than the newer trucks honestly lol. But if I ever come across it I’ll make sure I write it down as a note in the future.
Thank you for being one of the very few content creators that does an oil change correctly! You are indeed, per Dodge factory service manual and per Cummins Operation & Maintenance manual, supposed to prefill the lube oil filter. Too many meatheads spew nonsense and say not to do so.
The care the love that need for all the equipment around us...Josh....I kept old old oil in a separate metal container, I used brush to paint on old timber of garage walls, painted on old rusted metal, etc, etc. Getting too much, I disposed at parts store drum.
Good tips on removal of the fuel filter. It was always a bitch when I owned my 98.5 Cummins. Concerning the erratic shifting a resistor is sold that mounts to the firewall and cures the shift issue. Excellent video.
I think my wife's '97 Thunderbird 4.6 liter modular V8 has the toughest oil filter access of all time. You did an excellent job servicing that truck. It was very educational. Looking forward to your next vlog.
Truer words were never spoken ... "By this time you've got plenty of diesel fuel on your fingers..." I always change my fuel filters outside, with old clothes and rubber mechanics gloves. That stuff is strong and smells a good long time.
12 qts of oil Fumoto valves are awesome..no mess Use a puppy pad under drain pan.when draining oil remove dipstick and oil cap..it will help oil drain faster.I always use a fuel filter from the 03 to 05 Cummins, because they are a little tighter in micron versus fuel filter for a 98.5 to 02.when adjusting the valves..i always set them at .07 and .017..the turbo will "light" a little sooner! Good video!
Just changed fluids in the '97 12 valve manual. 9.6 quarts of Rotella with 2.4 quarts of Lucas. Thanks for the video, Josh! I had the same problem looking for good info videos.
When I bought my 99 2500 Ram it had a cold air filter on it but I removed it and put the stock filter back on it. I read this study that was done in Colorado on the difference between them and the stock filter performed way better, especially in the turbo temperature.
The only filters that are better than wix filters are fleetguard. The 5.9 cummins take 12 quarts of your favorite oil. At least that's what all of mine has taken.
Nice I just got a 99 3500 4x4 trying to replace the hub bearings, rotors and brake calipers shocks, and front u joints but it keeps raining up here in the rust belt Free all is a life saver with all our rust love to see more repair videos
I just bought my first diesel. I am glad I found your channel. I have a dodge 3500 ram with the 5.9. It seems to leak a little oil. I'm going to wash it up real good and see if I can determine where it is leaking. I'll probably ask questions of you along the way. GREAT VIDEO!! THANK YOU!!
I've got an '06 Cummins with 160K on it, and it doesn't drip oil at all. I have always run either a Mopar filter, or Napa Gold on it. Love how it runs, and most of all, how it pulls!! Like a train! Great video Josh, keep 'em coming!
Great video, when i change the fuel filter i use the drain pit cock at the bottom of the filter housing to empty out the fuel, then out comes the filter sweet and easy! that will allow the empty housing to be available for a nice wipe down inside, install new filter and top off canister with fresh fuel and close her up.
Another "pro tip" if you will drip just a little of the new oil onto the battery posts it will prevent corrosion. I've been doing it for decades. I can't remember where I learned it but it works.
Stoney Ridge Farmer it does indeed Josh even better when it’s done as it gives you great pride when you do it yourself and it’s a good job done. I love it. When someone says you can’t and then you do it it’s a great feeling of accomplishment

If my drain plug doesn't have a magnet. I always drill a little divit and superglue a small magnet. It's easy to do and cheap. But this lets me know if I'm having excessive wear since I don't always open my filter up.
Thanks Terry....there's a message here even if you aren't servicing this exact truck.....details matter....and I couldn't throw away those out takes...that was gold lol.....that filter was a buger!!
I just bought the same year truck 24v Cummins Josh this was beyond helpful brother great video thanks so much. Also when you get your hog lot done I'd be honored to donate some of our hogs to you to get started
I watched this entire video not knowing where you were, then you said foothills of North Carolina and I was like OMG! I live in the foothills of NC also. Hickory area. Loved your video. I've got a 2nd Gen myself. Mine is a 2000 5.9 24v Diesel. Definitely subscribing now! I'm about to change the oil in my truck, as well as the oil sending unit/sensor. Have you ever changed that in your truck before? Apparently from what I've heard I'm going to have to do a headstand down in the engine? Haha.
I have to say, the sound of that truck is very strange. But Im from London. Only time I’ve heard that sound is when its underneath our recently-superseded single decker buses. So thats why it’s odd. Im here cause I bought one of those. Excellent content.
U forgot to mention about usually when changing oil An filters that it’s also important to get a grease gun an grease all the fittings on front end parts an driveshafts etc.. a lot of ppl always forget about greasing .. some are sealed but some are greaseable an will help to keep ball joints tie rods etc last longer .. I always give mine a check when I do a service on my truck..👍
I got the 2006 version of your truck and I don' t think they changed much, love it! I got the Midwest version though, the rust is taking over the frame and the rear fenders.... Good video.
Before it happens to you have the bands tightened up in the transmission. And make sure the battery contacts are clean, or it won't shift right. Great trucks if you know what you have. Great video.

I really like working on my own rig too. Tops on my list is a car lift. I've been told you can get one for around $3000. That would fix the only part I don't like which is being on my back under one. Enjoyed the video.👍🏻👍🏻
On our 2005 5.9 its a lot easier to change and put in new oil filter from underneath. Ours is a Napa 7620 filter but should be same location. Also dont forget to drain the water separator on bottom of filter housing

Love my old truck, not as good of shape as yours but does the job. Oh, by the way, not picking on you,(you are bigger than me), but you 11mm bolts are really 10mm I believe.
