I don't even have a problem with the R1 not being a full flagship, my problem is that when the R3 they were like "The R3 the flagship? Don't insult us, the R3 isn't even close to what we can do, just wait for the R1."
Then the R1 releases and it's literally an R3.
yup, agree
@mipmipmipmipmip I just picked up a new r3 for 3750!
maybe in the future there's might be R1s
@@bryllupmiami3499 that's a steal! congrats. It's a great camera.
@mipmipmipmipmip 100% it'll be discounted until there is no stock left and then discontinued.
The flack for the R1 and even R5 is coming because they’re just getting more and more niche. Faster frame rates and AF improvements are nice, but what everybody has now is still really, really good. So a lot of people aren’t super moved.
This! I was so going to look into buying into the Canon ecosystem. I’ve got a z9 & z8 now and just really wanted a blowout Canon to exercise the Amex. That didn’t happen so maybe wait out the Sony new release.
Very true. How often does one really need 120 fps or 195 fps (especially with a very short buffer)?
@@JohnSwen-p6b And there’s already tons of mirrorless cameras you can use to shoot sports with and that can track the subject really well. It being a little easier on one isn’t really earth shattering when you’ve been able to do your job well with the cameras you own already.
Taking a beating? I doubt it, take a look at Canon’s sale figures. With no effort they continue to grind Nikon and Sony into the dust.
@@mathieupoaglisten, you need to do that math. The R1 and R5 mark ii are like the Kobe and Shaq of American football and that’s why you should buy both of them. Listen , I’m not bias! But I would take a Canon that’s lit on fire over any other camera brand out there, but Canon really threaded the needle on these cameras and the fact that people don’t like it is because they are canon haters aka Caters! This is ridiculous man! Ridiculous!
I really think it’s because the R1 feels so much like an incremental update to the R3. It makes it seem like Canon couldn’t decide on what the R1 was going to be, even though they had years to decide. That, plus the fact that many of the new features feel like in camera processing gimmicks, it looks like Canon leadership is slipping.
I can't argue about how much better or not than R3 - as I know little about that camera. However, from the specs of the R1 to me it's clear what they wanted to target the R1 for - fast action photography, like sports, photojournalism, etc. .....
Theyve slipped ever since they were still outting out NEW dslrs when the industry was going mirrorless and the final straw in my opinion was the no third party rf autofocus lenses, insanely stupid decisions by canon that in my opinion should cause them more issues than they probably have. Brand loyalty is so freaking dumb because the brands can just do what they want, this has been prove multiple times by canon
@@Tapirrrsome of the brand loyalty is from stuck in one system. It’s pricey to switch brands.
@@boostedmaniac True. Every time someone gets PO'd at something their current brand does and switches to someone else, they lose more and more money, and whomever they switch to just laughs all the way to the bank.
I mean if you’re using Sony as a yardstick then its more difficult for them because Sony is a bigger company with deeper pockets on technical development side of things.
I’m glad they brought out the R1 to help lower the r3 prices.
It is a sport focused camera as Canon presents it and among today's cameras it not only is flagship but also the best machine for sport photography.
I am a photojournalist in Germany and have been working with Canon cameras for years. At the moment I'm still working with two Canon R6 Mark I cameras. For someone like me who photographs and films general news and only occasionally shoots sports, the R5 II is an absolute dream of a camera.
Same, owning an r6 for a while now and skills have surpassed the use of that camera I can finally have an awesome R5 Mkii camera and use R6 for a backup. I am ready for it!
Think the flack for the Canon R1 is the same megapixels of the Canon R3. If the Canon R1 was say 30 megs it might not have been received such negative feedback.
Good point. While I am fine with 24 MP a small bump up to 30 MP would have help distinguished it from the R3 and still left plenty of differentiation between the 45 MP R5 Mk2.
These are just numbers, pros don't care about that. Such "Low" mp count and lack of growth from model to model disappoints number-lovers only.
Then they would be complaining about how big the files are and how hard it is to in raw...
@@lbeetech I have Canon R3 and Nikon Z9 cameras so I'm used to dealing with large files. I agree some snowflake freaks will complain against everyone and everything.

Since you mentioned about R1's exceptional AF performance, it is due to its sensor's 100% coverage of cross type autofocus sensors. This is a true flagship feature. No other mirrorless camera has it
...except the E-M1 II, which had all cross-type AF points in 2016.

You shoot only on iceland? How can you handle any outdoor shooting in +30C? It's a joke with the overheating, cant really be used as a main cam on any half serious production.
its only about 2k if you sell the r5.. :)
Whenever Canon brings out new, especially ’higher’ models there is always a flurry/storm of “not enough “, “I’m out”, “boring” etc. especially from all the naysayers on Depressing Photography Review. Then 6 months later everyone’s saying “great cameras.”
But this R1 over 6 Grand …Canon is nuts..and u are 100% Nuts paying that much for so little.
Yep. And they'll sell out the first batch no problem. R1 isn't for me buti have an r5mk2 on preorder....
I totally agree!!!
@RockPolitics I have never had mine shut down at all but I can see your point. I have had the overheat warning once but that was because I hit the record button by accident with the camera in the bag. I had the R5 before it was released to the public and I am definitely looking forward to the new specs. I would disagree with your point that they are always behind. I felt like the R5 pushed the competition forward because it brought specs on paper that others couldn't immediately match. Even with its flaws lol.

One of the many things I like about this channel's content are the nostalgic references. Proud of you for how far you've come since the early days.
As a sports photographer, I will say that my Canon R3 is a true beast. When put in the hands of a professional photographer with skills, it is unmatched. And remember, long before any of these cameras ever existed, photographers were taking excellent sports photos over 50 years ago. Back then, you actually needed real skills. So it wasn't the camera, it was the knowledge of the photographer and not the camera. The professional lens selection for sports shooting is also unmatched. The RF 1200mm the Canon RF 100-300mm and the RF 400mm. With all of that said, I am totally 100% on board with the Canon R1. There has been much debate and many fake rumors about the capability of this camera over the years. Personally, I'll say this to all of the haters. Don't buy it. Stick with whatever you have or sell all of your Canon gear and move over to another camera brand. This camera will not make you a better photographer unless you already have exceptional skills. This camera is built and designed for professional shooters, not amateurs. And if you think it's cost too much that's okay. If you don't have the money, don't worry about it. Stick with what you have or go buy something cheaper. And just to let you know, yes, I do think it is too expensive, but I'm going to buy it anyway regardless. With all that said, let the rumor mill begin for the next 4 years on the Canon R1 Mark 2.
Even the R6 II is a beast. I shot as a pro for over 15 years using Canon's 1D cams which were the best sport cams on the planet. Got the R6 II last year and it blowowowows the 1D cameras I used out of the water in every area except battery life and build (the 1D's were like pro power tools). Even using adapted 70-200 2.8 III lenses the R6 II keeper rate shooting fast sports like hockey is nearly 99% compared to maybe 50% with the 1D III.
You are very right in all what you say. Just a really professional skilled every day photographer, can worth what advantages the amazing Canon R1 can bring!
That's exactly what I thought when the camera specs were announced... it's primarely a sports camera... Not a wildlife camera, not a portrait camera, but a specially designed sports camera
Totally agree, plus I feel a real "flagship" camera is the most reliable and fixable camera in the range. This isn't talked about in the YouTubie channels, but I know Canon and Nikon seem to have the best.
😂😂😂😂
Happily preordered the R1 at the announce. To my view this is a failure of canon marketing, not a canon product. The R1 is more or less exactly what it should be, do i care about AI upscaling or denoise? Nope, but this is exactly what the canon 1 series has always been. The 5Dmk4 was 30mp to the 1dXmk2's 20, the 1dxIII stayed at the same 20.
Sony and Nikon choosing to make their most expensive cameras high resolution, and Canon accepting the premise of what a "Flagship" should be when the reality is they were staying the course with their product lines is what the issue really seems to be. This kind of thing is extremely common in the PC space where things like commercial workstations or ECC memory are significantly more expensive than even high level gaming PCs despite being objectively less capable in a number of ways.
In that space it's to be celebrated when something like the R5mk2 exists where the more generally desirable set of specifications geared towards the more mass market is the significantly cheaper option. Most tech companies would crank the price on both of these systems and just shrug their shoulders when people commented that they are out of reach.
Is the R1 a worthy upgrade to the R3? Maybe, maybe not. We are in a pretty awesome space now where most camera upgrades are going to be pretty marginal kind of no matter what. Image quality is fantastic all the way around, auto focus is going to get better but its still fantastic all around, and there is extremely healthy competition across the entire space which is exactly what you want. I guess when we see the A1 mk2 or the Z9mk2 we can start to see what the other companies consider worthy upgrades, I suspect they will be similar in their scope(which just means you don't need to upgrade if you don't want to!)
For me canon is the no brains choice period until sony or nikon start coming out with the same kinds of glass that Canon has been putting out(even if you're not buying it, the availability of rentals make it usable for just about any situation) That is the primary difference in the systems at this point, and while all the systems have fantastic glass that will cover all the bases only Canon has the stuff that is the best at covering all situations.

thanks for the update
As a long-time Canon DSLR user, yes, it's warranted. They've had so long to figure out what their flagship was going to be, and while it may excel in a few certain (and very niche) areas, it overall falls so short of what is being offered from other brands at a similar price point. Far less overall performance and features in a much larger package. And the same can be said for pretty much their entire mirrorless line. If they were going to catch up, they should have done it by now, but they're still lagging way behind. They're out of the race for me entirely at this point, and I'll be continuing to explore options from Sony or Fuji.
Canon R1 is mainly used by Journalism, the camera is perfect for that! yo don't need 45 Mp or more and even more than 30 fps is a waste when all that you need is send images faster to the editorial and a camera build like a tank, for the other people you have the R5 mkII which is made more for fine art... that's the bigger error.... a mistake concept than youtubers will never tell you...
One thing Jared did not talk about was the difference in how rugged the two bodies are. The R1 looks like the camera could be used in the the field for years and keep on ticking while the R5m2 looks much less rugged, all the features crammed into a small body. I know that I would have to get a grip with the new R5 model based on looks alone.
I have an R3 and for me it has been a great camera. I don't know if it is worth going from the R3 to the R1. I also wonder if the R1 is what the R3 MK II would be.
As for the R5 Mark II, I am weighing if really is worth upgrading from the R5 for what my wife and a shoot. The intriguing thing is the upgraded auto focus but is that much better than what we currently have?
So you didn’t bother watching the video.
@@mavfan1 When I said I also wonder I was agreeing with him.
Everything I said is an opinion based on what I shoot and what I heard. I don't know what you are talking about.
Doesn't matter how good the AF is, you still have to get the subject in the view finder
@@paulmills8472 My point, is the auto focus that much better to make it worth changing cameras? It is a no brainer about the subject.
@@paulmills8472 True! I have the R6 II and it never misses sports the AF is beastly. But when I shoot hockey, I personally miss a lot because trying to quickly frame subjects moving that fast is truly a skill (that I don't apparently have :p)
My 2 cents. I believe Sony, Canon, and Nikon are at a point were we will only see incremental increases. If I'm in the Canon ecosystem I'd really like the improvements the R5II brings...nothing earth shattering but solid improvements. I don't see these 2 releases as ones that will make folks leave their current brands with the exception of maybe fuji or panasonic.
Except for when it comes to things like global shutter, perhaps.
The R6MII was enough to bring me from Fuji.
@@adamadamis global shutter is a joke in most cases. If you really want the lower DR and more noise with crappier ISO settings then why not just but a cinema camera instead of a 35mm camera? People are so stupid and easily swayed on mediocre tube by know nothings like Kasey at CC and others who are all shills for other companies.
R5 II is good, it's amazing enough (I really want one as well even tho I don't shoot Canon). The R1 deserves the heat. I stand by that statement.
Resist the hype.
I agree. R5 II is the best hybrid on the market right now. The R1 though costs more and I can't find a single reason to spend that money unless you want a better build and better battery life (which can be important to many pros).
@@77dris Z8 faster sensor readout speed, cheaper...yeah nah, the R5II is NOT the best hybrid on the market now. Not even close.
The R1 and R5II cameras are about the right amount of improvement to keep existing Canon users still interested. They don't go beyond what is currently out there from Sony and Nikon except in AF but there's such a small window of distinction given everyone is getting over 95% in focus now. The next flagships from Nikon and Sony will likely open a large gap with Canon - especially with Nikon now having RED global sensor technology.
I agree. However, once Nikon and Sony release their flagships, Canon can release another flagship in 2027.
What u smoking?
The main problem is, that the R1 does not make enough noise. So far there are no real world Tests of the final product out there besides short Hand-ons, but because of the low MP (which is totally in line with Canon‘s 1-Series) and other not so spectacular specs it has to be bad, disappointing, but in the end it is a Camera that has to deliver for the target group of photographers. I was surprised to see an article on PETA Pixel, that Canon has the biggest market share in mirrorless cameras…does not look as if they would fall behind in anything.
Another problem is, that Canon did not bring out the R1 in 2020, instead they released the DX3 and 2021 the R3, which leads to confusion, what the R3 was/is in the line up…i simply think it was a trial run, a R1b.
The R1 comes out 4 years after the 1DX Mark III, it is Canons Flagship Camera, how they define it since the first DX.
i was lucky to go to release event here in Australia last week and super impressed with the R1 the weight and feel compared to my R6 with extra grip was amazing, and only just heavier then the R3. i know the specs are very similar to that of R5. But as the R5 is a mainstay for video creators they've kept it small to put on gimbles and such is my guess. I think that R1 is so good in teh hands that no pro would not go that over R5 in real world sports and birds , and i would love to see @canon do a r5L body for just photo peeps so then it could have the built in grip and maybe cut some vide features out . But both were fantastic to use.
I see these new cameras are already backordered and they haven't come out yet. Not everyone is drunk on megapixels. Everytime Canon comes out with something folks on UA-cam poo-poo it and predict Canon's doom, yet everytime they are proved wrong.
sales figures have proven that for decades. Sorry Sony shills you are less than 15% of the market. Canon and Nikon have around 75% between them and Canon has the vast majority of that percentage. Have for decades go look it up.
Sensor size does not make a Camera a flagship. While the camera could be faster on shot speed. What people who would be looking for are duel cards, spot on focus and quick read out of the sensor.
For someone who craps on crapping, a smaller sensor would limit the effects of cropping, speed up sensor read out as well as ensuing fantastic low light performance.
from the hands of true professional photographers sports, journalism and landscape and portrait this is a true masterpiece.... absolute beast and power and beauty of a camera....
I have already pre ordered both r1 and mk2 ...
Landscape & portrait? Not really. Great for sports & journalism but still a small upgrade from the R3. If they make the R3 mk2 a higher mp pro body camera people will understand… but usually you drop those together
How is the weather sealing affected with fan ports like this?
Apparently the vents go to a void space between the actual internals of the camera and the outer shell, so if water got in there, it wouldn't touch anything sensitive. Kind of like how a heat exchanger works...
Business wise, will the two new cameras make you more money? If you shoot well with the z9, a1 and are getting the shots, why spend all this money for an R1 or r5ii. I rather stick with the z9 because it can do everything. I never had a customer ask for a spec sheet. Shooting sports most of the time 12-15 fps is enough. The only time I get a new camera is when it's old, no longer supported by the manufacturer. I shot with my D3s when my Z9 was getting a tune-up. The client never asked me what camera I'm shooting with.
I won’t stick with a Nikon…. because I dont have one.
Canon missed by a whisker, put the R5mk2 innards in a R3 body and call THAT the R1.
That’s literally all they had to do…😅
I would have been elated if they put the R5 II in the R3 body. Battery issue solved.
r5ii isn't a sport camera so it impossible for it to be r1
1 series was always low res high speed workhorse for decades, if anyone wants high res, 5 series it is
The r1 is supposed to be the fastest and best af which it is. The r5ii is supposed to be the most balanced camera which it is
Ok I lol'd at the Manny Ortiz shot.
They should have just done the R5II with the same r1 body...
r5ii isn't a sport camera so it can't be r1
Why? Not everyone needs or wants the vertical grip style body. In fact I wouldn't like that at all for my workflow.
Love the 1 series bodies and r3 …wish they would do a r1s like the 1ds in04…it was mega in the day…it cost me 6500£ back then😮…for wildlife with big lenses they just feel better in my opinion… ordered a r5mk11 tho
@@alisonandguywildlifephotograph i shoot a9iii so i prefer small body with a grip option(no grip when doing family or hobby stuff). But I felt like the r5ii needed the 2 CF express slots and would be lighter that way than with the other grip you need to buy yourself. This way it would compete against the z9 instead of the z8. Sad to see they went a 3 different grip route instead of build in that would make it smaller than when buying a grip, and more usable for more scenarios and lighter. Hope you are happy with the r5ii, I wish I could afford to also have canon, the new AF feature for sport is nuts
I disagree here. Not everyone wants the bulkier body ... I'd rather have the choice to put in the battery grip, and or other attachments. The r5 ii is good as it is.
Great content and objective reviews of the photos. Kudos to those photo journalists who hung it all out there at a critical time in US history.
What’s funny is they didn’t call the R3 a flagship, but everyone else said “that’s your current flagship so that’s what we’re gonna call it until your true flagship comes out.”
Fast forward to the R1 and the main thing that stands out from the R3 is mainly the AF. I’m sure it’ll be great for pros, but come on now. At least bump the megapixels up into the 30s…32-36mp at least.
Also, the one thing I’m personally waiting to see from Canon is a telephoto of around 150-600 at f/5.6 or f/6.3 at 600mm. Their 100-500 might be suitable and I’m sure it’s fine at 500mm with the maximum aperture of f/7.1, but man, that price point is just too high in my opinion. Some might disagree and that’s fine. This is just my opinion.
all the RF glass is vastly overpriced.
things have changed and so companies like Canon and Sony make two flagship cameras to accommodate two type of professional users. Yes now we have two type of professional users who need the appropriate camera that suites their needs. The sport and journalist type that they do not need a high megapixel camera but a very fast with great autofocus to catch the moment they like and seek and need a big and robust body to handle the elements and the big heavy lenses they normally use. Then they are the other professional users who are dedicated to landscape and wild life and macro and portrait photography who need big resolution cameras with high megapixels to catch the maximum detail and do not need big lenses and camera body to carry for they are in move all the time and they do not need to take thousands of photos to catch the moment they seek. So now we have two type of professionals with different needs and likes and so the companies produce two types of flagship cameras to satisfy both of their needs and this is why Cannon presented them both at the same time. Sony is doing the same with their A1 and A9III cameras they are both flagship cameras that are fulfilling the desires of the two types of professionals. Before people need one flagship camera that would suite both type of professionals for there was not a big difference between their flagship and the other lighter professional camera on the megapixel counts.. Like the Eos !DXii and 5Dmarkiii they were very close in megapixels and so the !DXii could be assigned as a flagship camera for all uses and assignments for it was more robust and had better autofocus.
I’ve accused the fro of being a bit of a Canon apologist in the past but I’ll say you gave them a pretty fair shake here. The R3II assessment I think is spot on - a flagship camera in my view is one that has the tech and features to excel in almost every facet of photography, and the R1 is instead more of a specialty sports/wildlife/journalism camera. That could still potentially be a flagship camera if it’s specs absolutely outgunned the rest of the market, but in that niche the A9III outpaces it, and I would say the Z9 and A1 are both better “all around” cameras due to their greater sensor resolutions.
I do give them credit on the R5II, I think they got a lot right there to build on the original R5, but at the same time they priced it higher than a lot of competing models that have already been out on the market, some of which (namely the Z8) still outpace it in some areas.
This whole release from Canon feels like a rushed exercise to get product out on the market, and it’s hard not to think that haste was motivated by what their competitors have done recently. For as much as Canon was a titan of the DSLR market for so long, now they feel like a company who’s scraping and clawing to try to keep up in mirrorless.
All I’ve ever done is give everybody a fair shake. It’s just you probably didn’t agree with what I was saying and now you do agree with what I’m saying. I haven’t changed my tune on anything at all. I base everything off of fax and personal experience.
@@froknowsphotoyou still have a fax? Get with it Fro!

I personally struggle to see a reason to spend big money to upgrade from an R5 to a mark 2. After the initial financial outlay for the R5, as an amateur stills shooter for wildlife, there’s just not enough incentive to buy this very expensive camera. If I didn’t have an R5 and needed a camera of that quality, I’d buy the now much cheaper R5 above the mark 2.
spot on
The R3 shoots 14 bit RAW at 30 FPS, not 12 bit like you said.
I wonder if any of these "issues" can be fixed with an update
Hi Jared, are you shure, that R5II's 4k 100/120fps footage is oversampled from 8k? I did a comparison today and it looks like the same crapy stuff like the down sampled R5 120 fps footage, pur details and massiv aliasing artefacts with all codecs including i-frame only. No comparison to the much cleaner R3 120fps footage.
Cross type coming back is really nice. and will be great trickling down into other bodies.
Curious what would be 'flagship' at this point for a $6K+ full frame mirrorless system?
Do you need the cooling grip in order to shoot 8 K 60 raw?
Not from what I have seen, of course if you understood how to shoot video/cinema you would never overheat any camera but the mediocre tube children are hacks and have no clue. You don't just press record and walk around for half an hour. Get some education about scenes and shot timing
Canon should have just put the same 45mp sensor in the R1 and with the 30fps raw shooting it'll still be fast enough sports. They dropped the bag real hard on that one
Is back button shooting compatible with pre capture ? 😎
Yes
why wouldn't it be? Back button shooting is just for focus and exposure being separate...pre-capture is based on pressing that shutter button...

Agreed. Such poor reporting this guy.
I hoped R1 came with global shutter. Maybe they did too, and when they admitted themselves they couldn't make it, they had to make an R1 somehow, just not to leave the lineup without a formal flagship. So they changed the badge of an R3mk2 that they had ready to launch and called that the R1
Sony’s global shutter sensor takes shit images. You pay for speed with dynamic range etc. R1 is fast enough and it has great images.
Canon has been making sensors with GS for a few years now. The C700 has a GS, and they have a couple of other offerings in their medical imaging lineup. It is not for a lack of technology.
Canons big problem is the sensor.. 24 mp is 24 mp... if they had made it 40 MP it had been no problem :P because 40 mp is more that 24mp..
What on paper looks better is not always better in real life.
I was disapointed when they announced the R1 (im owner of the R1, R5C and two C70 cameras..) - BUT!!! I really think that like canons other cameras the camera comes to life when you use it and realize that the new functions do make a difference.
For a "small" to medium business a setup for both photo and video could be the R1 (24 mp BSI) and the C400 (26mp BSI) both with C-log 2... a good do it all combo for professionals.
I still don't see anything in the Canon corral to make sense for me to replace my 5dsr
But Nikon is looking interesting.
Jared,
Of the two cameras both the R5 Mark II and the R1 have improved focus capabilities, and stacked sensors with faster readouts and 14 bit electronic shutter sensor output. The R5 Mark II is $4299 and with the battery grip and the new P battery purchases required for some of the new features brings the total to around $5000.
My question is that being the R5 is currently available new for less than $2400 in NYC is the improvement really worth twice the price? I think that most people would be very happy with an R5 for $2400 as opposed to the R5 Mark II at $5000. That’s a 2 for 1 price difference and $2500 can get you a couple of L RF Mount lenses. What do you think about this analysis given how good the Canon autofocus already is?
You don’t need the grip unless you do, and the p battery does come with it. The improvements so far seem solid. So it’s up to the person buying it. Are they okay with what the r5 offered. Still a solid solid camera. But it depends on what someone is shooting
@@froknowsphoto,
I personally think that the R5 Mark II is the true flagship. It is the true hybrid camera that does both the 45-50MP stills and 8K video with stabilizer. My only problem with this is that the sensor readout is too slow and the body doesn’t have two CF memory card slots. Sony has got to be close to releasing the Alpha 1 version II. I expect it to be a faster readout than the current version and probably will have the AI chip in other Sony cameras at the cost of the R1. I am impressed by the R5 Mark II except for the sensor read out speed.
@@froknowsphoto the slow readout speed of the R5II means that rolling shutter is still an issue with birding photography. Yes, it's better than the original R5, but no, it's inferior to the R3 @ 4ms. Every Canon spec sheet document I have read has stated that the R5II does NOT have the cross type AF of the R1 (only the improved algorithms and extra AF processing chip). It's AF will be marginally better than the R5, a near 5 year old camera...
if you're shooting birds, like I do, the R5II is better than an original R5, but not enough to warrant upgrading from said original R5 to the R5II.
The eye control is a gimmick.
PS I own a R3...
@@froknowsphoto ,
Everyone who shoots events is going to need the extra P batteries and likely will want the two batteries for the extra shots that it will offer. From my experience you generally need a set of two batteries and a spare set . In the old days you needed 3 bodies to get insurance coverage on paid events and they needed regular maintenance inspections based upon use. When I was busy I had to get my camera bodies cleaned and lubricated every 3 months. The local repair service guy offered yearly rates to most of us. I just chalked it up to overhead expenses but it was not cheap. Today, I often see weddings being done with a single full frame camera and an APS-C backup.
All the best but I don’t think that someone who wants the R5 Mark II is going to be ok with just one or two batteries. I think that 4 batteries and a grip are essential given the amount of power that these cameras consume. I’m not anti R5 Mark II just not convinced that it is worth twice as much as the R5 for stills photographers. For video it is a significant improvement but is hampered by the single CF slot with 2 TB limitation. If you are shooting the faster frame rates you simply don’t have a backup. That’s OK for some but not for most professionals.
Do you still go to the Phillies games? I’m planning to go this Saturday home game and was curious if we can bring cameras - or limited to just phones?
Canon’s problem is satisfying the masses without satisfying the masses. If they release an R1 with all the bells and whistles then what do they release in a few years as a follow-up or what do they put in a different camera so that it doesn’t cannibalize from another? Already they have consumers stating they are not upgrading from a R5 or people turning to a R3 instead of an R1. If they released an R1 that was 50-60 mp, shot 40fps and could do 8k and didn’t overheat; would you buy an R5m2 or any other camera? However a camera with all those features would certainly cost over $8500. What prosumer would pay that? What everyday Joe would even look at it? An average person will buy an expensive car or house because it’s a necessity but not a camera that isn’t used everyday. A camera like everyone is wishing for would either be a one time purchase or would sit on store shelves because everyone would be happy - there wouldn’t be a need for an upgrade which is what some people are saying now. They are happy with their R5, R3, R7, R6,R62. Canon is treading carefully in what to produce while trying to figure out how can they get you coming back in a few years. Technology is improving but it’s not improving fast enough to be able to excite you every few years without breaking the bank. So it’s best to stay comfortable with the niche cameras. Everyone falls into one of those niche categories in how they use a camera but everyone wants that one all inclusive camera at a very cheap price and Canon won’t do it because they can.
Congratulations. You just described the infamous Canon cripple hammer!
@@christophercarlimages9003 Dammit! And I thought I was being innovative. “🎵I guess all we want is that perfect camera!🎶” 😂
All I want to know is will I be able to actually tell the difference between a Canon R, 5D4 vs R5, R52 or R1?
Probably not….
Will the R3 get any softwarre updates on autofocus, do you think?
No
nope. It's had fuck all updates of any actual substance during its current release cycle. Obviously being cripplehammered by Canon to protect the R1. R3 should have long had pre-capture added, AF updates etc...but nah. Canon doesn't care once it's got your money.
Canon will probably do what sony is doing...the updates will go to the newer cameras. That's your update.
@@davepastern that’s bullshit.. the AF in the r3 was miles better than anything at the time, so there was definite enhancements there out of the gate. This new AI is focused around a new chip that enhances its capabilities, but r3 used machine learning for its AF on the existing digit chip. Further, they gave us the 195fps burst mode, they gave us the people priority feature, added HD 240fps slow motion, focus bracketing, Timelapse movie recording, added auto temp standard/high to increase shooting time, and added pan assist for panning shots.
WTF do y mean they didn’t get any updates?!
@@Grr8jon you’re crazy… the Sony’s NEVER get updated. Barely ever, and the updates are minuscule at best. Canon released about 6-7 updates and right now the Canon r3 is about to turn 3 years old. Yet another reminder for those that needed regarding the indelible power of still images. I certainly hope that image wins the Pulitzer because I think we (USA) would all prefer to not have something even more dramatic than an attempted assassination this year.
Looks like the R1 release is similar to how activision treats their fanbase
Meaning the specs are not really “flagship” like and seem like minor upgrades
As in how activision releases DLC for the fans and calls it a full released game
Should’ve just called it an R3 mk ii
Doesn’t the R3 do 30fps at 14 bit? Pretty sure that’s the speck…
Yes it does. The 30 fps 12-bit is incorrect.
Two amazing cameras!
What would you recommend as a water casing
We really need to see some comparison on the quality of the photos, comparing specs like this is useless without it. What do i 300 frames pr second for if the 40 frames look better? Until that is settled you can remove the Quotation marks..
Isn’t the sensor on the 5d mark 4 larger than any of the 1dx cameras?
I really don't get the bashing here.
The 1D series camera have had the goal of being fast AF sports camera*. That's exactly what the R1 is, and it is great for that task. The 1D have never been about MPx. Low shutter speed = high ISO (often) = low SNR, so you want large pixels, thus low MPx.
The r3 existence is a bit weird, for sure, and confuse the naming scheme.
On a personnal note, I don't find camera release very intersting nowadays. Yes, they get marginaly better, but they've been so good for a while anyway.
*I know that the 1D"s" line meant for studio co-existed with normal 1D, with a different philosophie. But both line merged with the 1dx, with the sport side prevailing.
Thing is, in the modern world where storage is fast and cheap, there is little drawback to higher MP (no, high ISO performance does not count, as higher MP sensors perform the same as lower MP sensors when normalized for area). So the flagship, the most expensive camera, should be able to do everything.
They need to release a R3mII with the same body and the 45mp sensor. That would be amazing. I pick up my R3 more often than my R5 for the body.
I can see a R1mk2 in the middle of next year….if canon want to prove something they will have to go all out. I bought my R3 3 months ago and thought I’ll leave it to mid 2025 or maybe early 2026 before I’d buy one, but not now, it’s not enough that would make me swap. Yes the autofocus sounds amazing and I hope there’s more to be had out of the R3 via firmware updates like the 195fps, maybe canon could give you the choice to shoot any speed up to 195fps, who knows, I’m sure the boffins can think of something to add, if the R6mk2 can shoot 40fps, the R3 should be able to, maybe even 50fps.
I some initial announcements from outlets stating that the R5 Mark II had the same dual base iso that the R5C does. I don't know if they were wrong but I'm not seeing anything from any official channels. I'd really like them to be right 👀
When I heard the synthesizer, I immediately went back to my 10 year old self. Reading Rainbow was such a good show.
Can't afford either so it's like me watching about Lambos and Ferraris :) Really hope the AF trickles down to the R7mkII along with a faster read out.
The R1 specs suggest there will not be a follow-up to the R3. Did Canon rush the R1 into production? It sure seems that way to me, but maybe they've already go an R1-II up their sleeve? I don't know why Canon didn't go higher on the megapixels. Other than having two CF-Express cards, what would you buy an R1 over the R5-II? What am I missing? Eye-AF? Not many will use it, so what else is there? The built-in grip? I think Jared makes s few valid points for calling this the "R3-II".
The R1 rushed? It took them nearly 4 1/2 years to bring it out.
I can speak to why I'm choosing the R1 over the R5-ii. I choose the R1 primarily due to 1) the body design; 2) probable best implemented AF canon offers currently; 3) buffer depth. Secondary reasons include probable better low light performance. Hesitated for a slight bit due to the 24 mp vs 45 on the R5-II. In the final analysis I felt the 45 mp would be more of a liability than a benefit. Don't like the bigger files. Have little to no need for cropping 95-99% of the time. If I need extra reach I'll get longer lenses. Would I prefer same R1 specs with 45 mp? Sure. But I would not be willing to sacrifice any of the aforementioned R1 benefits to get it.
Hard for me to say that the R1 was rushed. I personally think the R1 was literally the camera cannon wanted to release, and believed was the best fit for the intended audience. In 4.5 years, I would think Canon had enough time and resources to bring a "better spec-ed" flagship camera to market. I don't think they wanted to. If that was a mistake or not I guess sales figures will tell. 🙂So far public opinion is not a good predictor of the R1's success...that's for sure.
@@mikede2464 the low light performance should be significantly better in the R1 over the R5ii as the native iso range goes to 102,400 rather than 51,200. I have the R6ii which also has a native range up to 102,400 and it's low light performance is mind blowing: I regularly shoot images at 40, 50,000 or higher and they're really clean even before denoising them. There are other benefits to lower MP too such as the diffraction limited aperture is better: the R1 has a DFA of f/9.7 whereas the R5ii DFA is f/7.1 so as you stop down to f/8 or narrower the diffraction starts to have an effect negating the higher resolution benefits. Also can run into pixel blur issues
I read the Canon interview in Japanese. Apparently R3 is the stopgap as they needed to launch a camera for Tokyo Olympics but they deemed it not good enough to be 1 series
@@mikede2464 it'll be minimal over the R3 for low light performance. AF performance is being likened to being a "bit" better than the R3...not a big improvement. R3 should have been dual CFB slots from the outset and full HDMI. But hey, Canon CrippleHammer...
For those of us who wanted top notch AF and 45mp stacked sensor with fast readout speed, the R5II is a failure on all accounts. No cross type AF. Shitty slow sensor readout speed of around 8ms. I don't give a fuck about video content, as I'm a stills photographer, so the video upgrades are worthless to me personally. I was hoping that the R5II would have a readout speed of 4ms (same as R3), 45mp AND the same AF system as the R1. But nope...cross type AF would be huge for birding photographers and we would use that tech. 24mp of the R1 isn't just good enough for birding unless it's a large bird in frame, or you can get super close to a smaller bird (possible, but typically unlikely unless you're a pro that can camp out for days at a time in a hide).
FLAGSHIP??? (word of the week).
Jared was so disappointed with this R1 he had to make three videos about it.
And I can totally understand him.
What were they thinking at Canon when they made their "FLAGSHIP" a 24 mp camera?
But Jared says he is going to choose R1 in his R5 mark ii preview video. So it looks like there is something about R1.
crazy right, 4 years ago the flagship camera from canon was the 1dX and a prosumer camera like the R6 was equally good.,, flgaships are the camera with moist robust body, better autofocus and excellent battery life. don't know why you need 50mpx for a camera that is going to take 10k pictures every time is use

You are not wrong.
Interested to see how the upscaling in the R1 will look like. And whether it is usable for portraits.
You can do it in post. It's software. Not a reason to buy a camera for whatsoever...
Course it's deserved they need to bring out a decent APSC camera to compete with OM1 and G9ii - it has a bigger sensor than the latter but has worse low light performance and dynamic range amongst many other shortfalls
I think their APS-C cameras are great. If you want a fully packed camera, you go full frame. You can't have it all for a lower price in APS-C, there has to be trade offs.
@froknowsphoto £6.5k is ridiculous just for some better low light and depth of field (in my opinion, the latter is subjective the former definitely objective)
APSC should be the king of the ring being the mid point of full frame and M43. Yet it's treated like a ginger step child. Who in their right mind wants an APSC camera and the advantages that could bring to then whack on a huge full frame telephoto onto it? Madness.

First, let me say “Thanks” for all of the good content. My thoughts on the R1… it’s like owning a Tesla, meaning the “Features” you want will (hopefully) be delivered one day with software updates, which are only possible because of the awesome hardware you already own. Think about it… almost every time you said “flagship?”, it was about something that could be fixed with an update. Next, Do you think that 24 megapixels disqualifies you from being “‘flagship”? If you’re limited to only shooting uncompressed/raw at 20 megapixels, does that disqualify you? If you can shoot 120 fps, but only in Jpg, does that? Or, if you’re limited to CFX type A, does that? Ok you get where I’m going… the A9III, the A1, the Z9, and the R1 are all fashion models you can marry… one has a mole on her forehead, one has a mole on her hand that touches your hand when you hold hands, and one has a mole on her baby toe so she walks funny…. None are 100% perfect!!!! I would be honored to own any, but I have lots of Canon glass, so …. There’s that.
You should take the R1, set it to basketball priority, and film a room full of people dribbling, just to see what the autofocus does.
I'll probably get an R5 II when my OG R5 dies, but I don't expect that to happen for years.
As for the features lacking in both new cameras, I have to assume that some will be remedied in future firmware revisions. But they should be out of the box features.
Ive never beenintrested about journalistic photography. But wow... These photos are epíc XD
That was shocking and exiting.
What gets me is that Canon gives all the “R1 is not a flagship” everything they want in the R5mii at a price unheard of with those headlining features. Canon literally gave everyone what they wanted in either camera, plus 1 with an unbelievable price. Somehow everyone is mad because the label “flagship doesn’t fit
What gets me is how someone can claim the R5 MK2 has everything a flagship camera should. That is except for durable pro body, larger more capable battery, and sub par autofocus compared to the R1 and still video overheating without the purchase of an expensive add on grip. It's hardly what people expect in a flagship.
@christophercarlimages9003 so the $4200 r5 mkii is not great because it doesn't have a built-in grip? R5mii has all the major autofocus points listed in the r1. At this point, you are just trying to argue. I don't even know where you get the r5 overheats. Are you making that up?

Canon R1 is mainly used by Journalism, the camera is perfect for that! yo don't need 45 Mp or more and even more than 30 fps is a waste when all that you need is send images faster to the editorial and a camera build like a tank, for the other people you have the R5 mkII which is made more for fine art... that's the bigger error.... a mistake concept than youtubers will never tell you...
In the Netherlands the Canon R1 will cost 7499 Euro , real flagship price available in November 2024
Ik this is a dumb question but do you have to shoot 8k in raw or can you use a normal picture profile where you don’t have to touch the colors as much
There’s the CLog options, Rec 709 too
Slap a LUT onto the CLog (CLog 2 is the best one), and you’ll be good
But surely there’s regular picture profiles
Has it got more dynamic range than the Z6III ?
Why did they lower the rear LCD resolution from the R3, and lose the super fast 195fps mode? Not sure why it's worth more than the A9III which is only expensive due to the global shutter. R3 was $1500 too much, R1 is $1K too much. Laughable that they want $800 more than the Z9. R5II would be my choice any day of the week.
It's like they wanted to hold back some of the "flagship" style features for the R1 Mk II but they went too far

I think Canon is a bit like Apple and that's not "bad." These cameras are iterative updates in much the same way as Iphones which rarely have big changes. So we get better AF for sports, a little bit better video specs, a little nicer EVF. Its not much different than Sony and Nikon. They're not exactly lighting the world on fire with innovation either.
I would llke to see some fundamental changes, like serious amounts of computational photography, built in memory, really great wifi and cloud backup, and better interfaces. This will be much more compelling than having a few more FPS and slightly better AF.

There is no need for a fan grip - that's why it's only one option out of three. What the grip allows you to do though is shoot in very demanding situations where it becomes useful, e.g. video shooting in the middle of summer in Phoenix....
Why put that extra cooling design and extra cost across the board for all situation shooting when it would likely only come into effect for a smaller percentage of time?

I think what people are really upset about with the r1 is the mp not being 45+.
Though historically flagships have been lower mp. It’s only since the a1 that “flagship” cameras became high mp.
But their peak photojournalism, wildlife, and sports camera is the a9 series, which had been their top tier performance camera for years before the existence of the a1.
Nikon has the only real camera that fits the title of being a top tier photojournalism, wildlife, and sports camera as a flagship.
The r1 is on the same level of mp of previous canon flagships, which have been lower mp cameras than others and never been an issue until now.
People are putting their own personal expectations on what the companies should do or call a flagship.
The r1 is an a9iii competitor, not the a1. The r5ii is an a1 competitor, as the Sony flagship a1 wasn’t really that much better than the r5.
Each company has their own personal definition of what cameras are and it’s not up to us to answer or label them as such.
Except you seem to forget that the word "flagship" actually has a real meaning. And people are going to understand that Canon is dead wrong to suggest that it's their best and most important product. Already the public thinks the R5 MK2 is. So the problem lies with Canon, not the consumer!
the original R5 isn't close to the A1. The A1 outperforms it in DR, high ISO performance, AF performance and another 5mp to the mix. Small and light body too vs the R5. Better EVF.
