Which would you go with and why???
I have an R3 and would like a second body. It's tough because I really like to have GPS built into the camera and can't grasp how this was dropped from the 5 series cameras. I'd get a 2nd R3, but my 2nd body should have no vertical grip.
You didn't mention the R3's awesome touch sensitive joystick to move focusing points around. That alone would be a very powerful consideration for R3 IMO.
@@loudandclearmedia Yes I did, 17:12
Was waiting for rhe R5 II right from when the rumour mills started mentioning it. I come from a 5D IV which I still have, and the itch to buy the R5 at that discounted price was too much, but the patience has paid off! I pre booked the R5 II and might have got it probably 4 days later than when people started receiving theirs in the US.
Only cringe right now is Am not able to source a Grip to make it feel like a Pro Body..
Am waiting for that R5 II setup video I know you're going to make 😊😊
I mostly shoot my son’s youth hockey. Upgraded from an R6 to an R3 during the 4k sales price. I agonized over the preshoot of the R5ii, but the rigged pro body won me over. I didn’t think I’d get a chance at a pro body under 6.5k in the future. The embedded GPS is a nice plus.
R5 is the best, because I can't afford the others.
#COOOOOOOK
Yeaaaaaahhhhhhjh. 😂 I’m in this boat, too.
Then I'll say my M50 is the best because I can't afford any others:)
Agreed
😭😭😭😭
If you shoot primarily landscapes, portraits, architecture, or products, and you own an R5, there's no need to upgrade. If you shoot anything involving action, or video, run ... do NOT walk ... to your camera retailer and order the R5 II. Which I did.
I know it's a month away. But an R1 vs R3 comparison is begging to be made.
That's me then
Just got used R5 and a 15-35 f2.8 for less than an R5ii body only! I’m very happy
Right?! It is amazing for how much $$$ you can get the R5 these days! You have got a great combo, enjoy!
@@JurajPadych I’m very excited, my first full frame mirrorless so big step up for me
dont forget the r6 mk2 is another option
agreed. R6m2 is versatile than R5 in my opinion.
I used to use that camera, it is perfect piece of gear for that money! Incredible performance. And with R5 Mark II ergonomics I am glad that Canon moved the on/off switch to the right side (where you index finger is) of the camera!
I was wondering the same, the R5 and R6 seem to be the hardest to separate
Gotta stick with the OG R5 because even at 4 years old its still producing great photos. I could upgrade but why. Same megapixels too. Nah im good. Great video.
Yea the R5 is made in Japan so the R5 won't have an israeli bomb in it like any made in taiwan product! Don't want to have my eyes blown out at any time by Jareds people!!
From a non-professional/hobbyist perspective, there's no question: a second-hand r5 is unbeatable. Then expend the money you saved on a trip to a cool location to take pictures and enjoy some nice spa afterward
I have just bought 2nd hand R5, just need to take pics with it now.
I did just that! Ordered used R5 and a 15-35 f2.8 and it’s still less than an R5ii body
Going to leave Sony and come to Canon which would you recommend for landscape sports and wildlife?
I chose the R5 MkII as my primary with my R5 as my secondary (Already had it)
I think the decision between R52 and R3 truly depends on usage and glass. If I’m shooting concerts, I’m taking the R3 all day. Especially if I’m able to get up close to the action. If I’m doing a lot of long range work, give me the R52 all day. Cropping (when necessary) will be far superior, and crop mode will beat any teleconverter by far.
Realistically, I can’t dream of affording any of these, as I’m building up RF glass I can’t afford. Lol
R5 is amazing highly recommended you buy one, I have one with three rf lenses 100-500, 50mm, 24-105
Amazing video as always!!
I got the old R5 and I always photographing Aviation, Navy and the moon, I always use electronic 1st curtain shutter,
with Sigma 60-600mm. It's working amazing!
I wish I could put my hand on the R5 mk ii but the price outside of the US/EU is more than 5200$.... :(
I'm a sports photographer (outdoors 4x4 racing) and beginning to do my research into getting a new camera body. Coming from a 5D Mark IV, the R3 is something that I started to gravitate toward but after this, with the video quality and megapixel, the R5 MII might be the way to go.
Most comprehensive analysis I have seen yet. Thank you, Jared. Growing tired of all the “experts” who tear apart and nit pick every new piece of camera gear that hits the market, pixel peeping all the way. Thank you, Jared. I just picked up an R5ii yesterday. Looking forward to more solid content from you.
I'm sitting here editing photos from Disneyland that I took on my R5 as I'm watching this, and I'm using the Charlie Brown Fro Pack preset for some of them and they look great! Cheers!
Which lens combo? 😊
@@alphaandomega2709 The R5 Mark I paired with the Canon 50MM RF f/1.2. I finally got some decent shots of C-3P0 in the Star Tours waiting line. There's still some noise in the blue areas but it's only noticeable if you pixel peep. But 3P0 looks great! One of the shots of him I managed to get down to ISO 500. But even the shots at ISO 3200 look great!
I would've preferred a slightly more versatile lens but it's always a compromise there. Sure, I could get the 24-105 f/2.8 and I'd be set but I couldn't take that thing on any rides with me. It's just too big. And I'm not leaving a combo like that in one of their flimsy lockers.
But maybe there's another option like a chest sling bag that's meant for this situation. I'm going to look into that.
currently in PL brand new R5 is literally at half the price of the R5mkII on some sales offers
Better focusing system and pre shooting, R5II for the win without question. The focusing system alone would make it a done deal for me. If I didn't have 4 children currently in college I'd pick up that bad boy for sure. I can't justify that cost right now unfortunately. My sports photography generally doesn't even pay for the gas to get to the event as I do it so the athletes and parents have some memories preserved. For now I'll humbly continue to live with all of my 5D EF bodies (III and 2 IV's) as well as the recently new to 1DXII which I thought for $1200 with only 60K on the original shutter was a pretty good deal.
Using the viewfinder is for boomers
Maybe it's just late or maybe it's because the R1 is really and R3 mkII but I went 20 minutes into the video before I realized the third camera in the lineup was an R3 and not an R1
I have R3.and satisfied with it.
For most people, R5 or even R6ii is the better buy.
That’s what made me buy a used R5 over new R5ii, for what I do an R5 is WAY more than I need! So why kill myself for features I won’t use 🤷🏻♂️
Solid analysis of the pros and cons of each. All three are winners in my book. You can't go far wrong with any of them
38 minute Video is out 20 minutes yet people are commenting.
A Master check mark to the Canon R5 Mark II .... holy crap, Robin grab the battery grip 😋👍👍
Love my R5 I would honestly by the R5C in good condition when I purchased my 2nd cam. Film based reasons. No grip needed for airflow
I have r5, love it and bought an r6 mii as a poor mans r3 as 2nd cam for field hockey and basketball. I know… thousands on cameras there are no poor mans anything.
Then was thinking about a r3 and use the r5 as second. Of course used r3. R5 mii isn’t even in my conversation. R5 is lovely.
This may get even spicier once a rumored R6 III comes out. I've got an R6 right now and I'm also comparing the other options to it. Used R5 would be amazing for the better EVF and display plus extra resolution - but am I going to miss the amazing low light capabilities? R6 II has the better autofocus compared to both R6 and R5, but still the same EVF and display as the R6. Used R3 seems like an upgrade every aspect over the R6 - but do I want to travel and carry that large thing all day on vacation? I don't know... So waiting for official R6 III specs first is my personal decision. R5 II is the only option that doesn't appeal to me at all.
I have just bought a used R5 (original) to go with my R7. Not sure if I needed to (I am a pure hobbist) but hey, here we go. Love the channel, been watching for a while. Cheers. BTW I am in the UK so the pricing both in currency and amounts (new/used) are different.
Absolutely needed this video!!
I was stuck between R5II vs used R3. Upgrading from a 5dmk4. I'll go with R3
I didn't think I'd like preshooting so much but it's absolutely amazing. Also CLOG2 is the goat and 100% worth the buy alone
All extremely overpiced and no reason why Canon couldn't make an stackrd bsi sensor for the R5 Mark II charging $4,299 for barely an upgrade over the OG R5. I'll just get the R5 used.
How is it barely an upgrade? He said the R5 II was as good or better than the R3. The R3 is miles ahead of the R5.
I have a genuine question about buying used cameras. Does anyone ever recommend buying from individuals rather some where else like B&H or any other retail store that may backup their used products with return policies? I am always hesitant in buying used gear, but would love to hear some opinions from people who have purchased used gear in the past.
I’m a Sony guy but that R3 does look pretty
I have a R3 and a R5. I shoot my daughters basketball and Softball. The new AF in the R52 and R1 is very tempting. I absolutely love the ergo of the R3!!
Eye control sounds like a game changer for me, (sports and wildlife) but I've heard that eye control doesn't work with everyone? Be disappointing to buy and find it's not compatible with my eyes
Thanks Jared
Always appreciate these comparisons
I really like the R3 , because it’s the R3
Yet the R5 mkii is what I would benefit the most with considering my workflow
Why Canon R5 Mark ii doesn't have 6K Recording Options?? 🙄
Most of my shooting is wildlife, you know, the critters that rarely cooperate to fill the frame even with a 600mm lens. So cropping is the norm. The R5/R5 MkII have the extra pixels that allow me to crop and still retain good resolution is the choice that makes sense. And since I'm just an enthusiast and don't do pro stuff anymore, my R5 with grip wins the day.
R3 is the best choice with no compromises
Any way, I can't afford any of those toys mate!!! Tell me how to freeze action with R8 camera mate.
Compare R5MK ii with other brand cameras
The R5 ii just is so underwhelming to me. They've come up and equaled some of Sony's old cameras. The only place where they really excelled is the AF, but I can see the A1 ii just going leaps and bounds past this Mark ii.
Thanks for a competent update and comparison of these cameras.
If I already own R5 or R3 as an owner I would wait for the next one. Wait for the next generation Cameras that have CF Express 4.0 support for PCI 4.0. Because there will be a physical big change on the camera and then Canon will come with significantly denser pixel sensors and Global Shutter will certainly be introduced then. Canon will learn from Sony and their A9 which has global shutter, but delivers a poor image quality. As Jared says invest in better lenses for now. The difference is not so obvious that you have to switch. If you're not a good photographer, the R5 MArk II won't help you take great photos anyway.
I love these videos, and anything is a step up from what Im shooting with 😅 but I think before I try pick a camera to upgrade to I might get a mentor meeting with Jared
I'm getting myself an R5mII for Christmas :) still super happy with the R6mII, but a second body will be great for a smoother workflow. The R3 is very tempting, but the body is a little too large for my needs.
R3 is badass but the mark2 with its new technology is straight up madness
For me, I will use the trade-in value of my original R5 to get the cost of upgrading to the R5 MkII down to around $2,000. For that price, upgrading to get the better auto-focus and pre-shooting features plus the 30 fs (I will probably lower that to 20 in most cases), reduced rolling shutter, and 14-bit raw files with the electronic shutter is worth the price. I shoot a lot of wildlife, almost entirely photographs, so those are the features that matter most to me. I'll live with the slightly reduced dynamic range/more noise at higher iso values. Thanks for a great video Jared
Great review Fro, thanks! I'm not even a pro-sumer, I am an amateur-sumer, so my choice would be the R5 II. Way too much camera for me, I'm not even challenging my 70D yet.
I completely disagree with the idea that if you’re a professional you should want the latest and greatest. Particularly where we are with mirrorless cameras now. I feel like Jared is mostly doing sports when he tests these cameras, but for 80% of photographers the R5 is going to be the best option. If you’re shooting weddings, events, landscapes, photojournalism and even most sports, the R3 and R5 are going to the best option (depending on megapixel or body design preferences). If you’re doing hardcore sports photography, the R5 II is the best option, but it’s not like the speed or AF improvements in the R5 II would be that evidence unless you’re doing hardcore sports and action.
I received my R5mii day 1. Only complains Iv had is comparability with older gear, my flash trigger didn’t work and tethered capture to Lightroom classic wont work either. The flash trigger fixed itself and i have no idea how. After i purchased a newer model trigger, my older one started working. Tethered capture I’m still working on
Same on the flash trigger. No idea why but mine started working on its own.
Long time Canon shooter... I have the RP and all L-series RF glass. I am upgrading to a Canon refurb R5 for landscape photography, the RP will be for backup/travel.
I’ve been on the 5D Mark II for 15 years and just got the money together to upgrade. I’m no longer a pro and mostly do shots of my family with some landscape and street photography. In the end I decided to get the R3 on sale because of the pro body, the smart controller (can’t beat it for moving the AF point around), the battery, the screen, and for its track record. Very happy with it. Would’ve loved eye AF 2 and pre-shooting but can live without them for a couple years until the R3 Mark II comes out and has those features and hopefully more.
I LOVE these videos ❤
Ill be keeping my R5. May buy a R5C in the future
Great video. As an enthusiast and a serious photographer will it be worth it to get the R3 if I already have the R5? I love the capabilities of the R5 and all it has to offer. But I do also like the R3 and for its fast shutter as I tend to do a lot of fast moving (aircraft) photography. Also, regarding you Fro Pack 1,2,3,4 can I use these as a stand alone since i do not have photoshop or lightroom. I use other more specific software sych as Portrait Pro 2023, ON1 Effects 2023, Landscape Studion Max 3 for working on my pictures. Please advise. Thank you and keep up the great work.
For wildlife, weather (think lightening), and other instances where a subject goes from zero to fast immediately, the pre shooting makes all the difference. Olympus has had that feature for years (they call it Pro Capture). I use it extensively in the spring storm season. It's like having a cheat code for fast action. As for the R5M2, I'd love to get it, but will pass for the same reason I didn't get an R6M2. I'm just too accustomed to having the On/Off switch on the left side of the viewfinder and there just isn't enough upgrade in the upgrade to make me exchange a wad of cash for one. But if you don't already have an Rsomething, and are interested in a very good all around Canon camera that'll remain viable for many years, the R5M2 is bound to be a solid choice...especially for that pre shooting capability.
I love these comparisons. I hope to see the R6mk2 vs R5mk2 🎉
Let me jump in here real quick.
If it's just the software to give an R3 the preburst function (And the newer eye autofocus), then please Canon, do it. I'm afraid then the gap to the R1 will be too small and they won't do it.
Hi!
I noticed in the video that you seem to be left-handed and have an eye. If that is correct I have a question about how it is to work with these Cameras as a Lefty and with the R6 Mark II?
Is the R5 II your fav camera and got-to camera now? Are the photographers out at pro sports events going with the R5 II? Do you think the R3 has the better sensor and processor?
Canon is going to get really interesting when they start allowing 3rd party full frame AF lenses for their mirrorless mount! Kind of boring right now, though. It's all about the glass, until the glass is equal!
Upgrading from canon 5div should i go for R5ii or the og R5? I do fashion and products.. Going to start videos too
I upgraded from an R6 to the R5mk2 and have been very happy. 45mp and pre-shooting have already paid off in the field.
I'm not a pro so I'm sticking with the R5.
I went from 1dx mk2 to R5 mk2 as a sport photographer (non professional ) auto focus wins all the time :)
If the R3 came in 45mp no one would be interested in the R5 or R5mk2. The R3 fills the hand like no other.
The R3 is an excellent camera and I own the R5ii also, but there is something special about that R3 sensor!
Exactly. The image quality is superb on the R3. Probably a mix between better dynamic range and high is..
Buy R1 😂😅😊
Hi Fro, what about the spec of built-in GPS on these three cameras?
First comment bro...❤
The R3 is lacking an updated firmware!
As a hobbyist i still dream of an R3. Still loving my R6 though. Its all about the glass baby.
I have a 5D mark iii and looking to upgrade to the r5. I do wildlife photography
In Belarus R3 is about 8000$😟
Thank you.
Best reviews on the web.
The r3 overheats a lot. Did they solve that with the R5 II at 4K 120fps?
I made my choice a month ago, and I couldn’t be happier with my brand new Canon R5 Mark I!
Don’t fall for the marketing hype - yes, the Mark II has some advantages, but it costs almost twice as much as the Mark I, which, until just three months ago, was still an industry-leading camera. Take advantage of the record-low price it’s going for now and invest the rest of your budget in a nice lens.
Just my two cents! :)
marketing hype? I use the camera, it's my hype, my real world hype and usage. Proof is in the pudding.
@@froknowsphoto
Hey, no offense meant! I really appreciate your content and was talking about general marketing around new releases. My point was that the R5 is an amazing value proposition right now, and the fact that there's a newer version costing twice as much doesn’t change that :)
Keep up the awesome work!
Marketing hype? The pre-capture is game changing in Canon world.
For people that are not professional photographers.. it’s kinda a hype. If you can take advantage of a good discount. I agree with the comment made.
Not taking anything away from the amazing new cameras.. just stating from hobby photographer here… I own a canon R5 and bought it as my very first camera when it came out.. I still enjoy shooting with it. Would I like to upgrade? … it’s just not a good financial decision as a hobbyist
@kennethlui2268 well, I agree the pre-capture is indeed a compelling feature but calling it a "game changer" is definitely a hyped terminology. professionals have used the R5 as a main body for probably all types of photography and if hobbyist can now get it for such a low price I really don't see how there's even a dilemma - even if you had extra money laying around it would still make more sense to invest it towards better glass..
How does pre-shooting work with back button focus?
The one and true answer is: Hasselblad X2D.
No camera cost $4299 in the current market.
R6 mkiii is also around the corner
I have an R and looking into R5 mk1 vs mk2
I'm currently shooting with the R6 and wondering if I would buy the R5 Mark II...
Do you need all the additional features? The R5 MK II, just like the R3, isn’t for everyone
the a on your shirt isnt centered
Non.. you should buy a a9iii
Terrific comparison.
What better r3 vs r1 ?
Great video!!
I haven't seen a true comparison of C LOG 2 vs C LOG 3. That would be very helpful. I mean, I already bought the Mark II and sold my R5. But still.
What do you mean R5 doesn't have variable shutter? Under Q you can turn on flicker mode so it will eliminate any flicker from lights or screens.
Flicker mode is for mechanical shutter, the variable shutter is for the electronic shutter which the R5 does not have
Jared! Canon screen is not straight because it has to be angled. Now think why canon made it like this. We going to test your intelligence as result of your answer 👍
I was waiting for the r5 ii. When it was announced I was really impressed and set out to buy it. It's 4800€ in my country. But I got a hold on a barely used r3, as new condition for 3500€. I could't pass that deal. It's a great camera even tough I would prefer that smaller r5 body.
Great video ❤
12:44 Four year old R3 should get the check. R3 has faster MB/s buffer clearing than new R5ii. Neither uses even half of CFexpress 3.0 theoretical maximum transfer rate. CFexpress 4.0 would do nothing to cure the R5ii CFexpress writing bottleneck. Pretty easy to test with a stopwatch and math. R5ii will overheat in short order when using it outdoors. Stills and video both overheat, the fan grip is a necessity. Also the fan grip is half assed, no hand grip mounting point, no on/off button, no thermostatic fan speed regulation. R5ii autoleveling doesn't work with every record mode. Features that don't work at 8k are kinda pointless, you don't buy an 8k camera to shoot 4k.
Ive used the R3 for a couple of years now, traded in my R for an R5 last year when B&H had a super sale, $3k with a free grip. I'm saving for R glass, 😢so passing on R5ii
As ridiculous as this comparison might seem to be, it's actually perfect.
Thank you Jared for all the comparisons and information! 👌🏾👌🏾
Photoooooo😂😂
I have the R5 and R5 2. I'm the photographer for my kid's swim team.. outdoors in 90 degree heat.. the R5 would constantly overheat.. I used the R52 in similar conditions (Sesame Place shooting the parade in hot sun) and had no problem. I have the cooling fan but didn't use it. The R52 better in every other way too (never noticed the silly .4 dynamic range difference), but mainly wanted to make the point about the overheating.
The R5 dose not overheat but they say the R5 II does.
"They" are wrong. Re-read my post. Conclusion came from using both. R52 would overheat with enough time but way better than the mark 1
@@paulanthony1689 Since the firmware update and setting the temp level to high, I have not had the R5 overheat or give a heat warning. The R3 give a heat warning after about 5 minutes when you shoot 4K 120fps
Man your the best looks like I’m gonna pair my R5c with the R5mkii
