I JUST sent one back today for that same spiral! I ordered a 5" tall statue of hands holding a crystal ball off of Amazon. It not only has those spirals, it has a seam right there that is deep and rough, the mold wasn't even trimmed or cleaned up, and the dangum crystal ball is flat on the bottom and egg shaped on the top. It was a $25 mold! I was sooo mad. I just love you and your videos. I'm so glad I stumbled upon you one day.💚💚

I agree about the mold quality, but all in all the figure turned out great! Hope you are feeling better! Thank you Steve 😊 for all the work you do to make us better crafters! You make my life easier and teach me wonderful things!!

That’s a useful idea for making a base on a mold piece! You always teach me something new.

Oh WOW!!! I love the cogs in it!!!! How unfortunate that the mold has so many flaws..... If it was something that I really wanted to make a few of, I think I would have to sand and finish the one. Then pour a new mold.
    Just my thoughts!!
Stay safe, you do you, and stay creatively crafty!! 👍👍🔔🔔🦋🦋

I agree about the mold, but in this particular case, because of the steam-punk theme, I think the circles actually added something! 😊

The ridges actually works with the steampunk aesthetic. Might not with other bits and bobs, but the cogs ⚙️ look fine with the ripple marks.

I also have a soft mold and an empty tin can works well to help sturdy them up and stand up while curing.

I love the technique of using up those bits which with this mould it's the perfect idea if you're not absolutey happy with the quality so all in all it's brilliant x

Yeah, those are layer lines from the 3D printed master. They really should have taken the time to sand those layers or add material and sand that off so that it was absolutely smooth before making molds from it.

Maybe you can make an updated Polishing video to see if there's a way to polish something like this? I feel like pouring resin over this one might make the figure too bulky, especially in the arms

I actually like the lines that transferred to the resin, they kind of fit with the cogs and the steam punk theme.

I am new to resin and have SO many questions. Can you sand and buff out these issues? Also, I saw your video where you painted micro powder inside a mold before pouring. Amazing!! Can you paint with micro powder after your resin has cured? Thanks for your videos. Best professor EVER! 😅❤

🙋🏼‍♀️Hi Steve, I have a question. You said that the mold wasn’t good because it left some rings or ridges in the finished piece, but can’t you just buff out those rings?🤷🏼‍♀️ Or are they just too deep to buff out?

Note to people who make molds with 3d printed casts FINISH your pieces before you make molds these "tool-marks" form the 3d printer do affect the final product.

Can you just pour a layer of resin on top of the statue, let it spread and cure, and thereby remove those layer-lines??

  • @margaretzuelke9761

The person who made the mold should have sanded the printed piece before pouring the silicone. Either that person didn't realize that it would make a bad mold, or just didn't care

Looks like that mold was made from a filament printed piece.. they didn't bother smoothing out the print before molding it hence the lines. Not good for molds :(
