    When using stencils I always keep a shallow container of warm water near by, that way I can put the stencil in immediately, meaning I can come back to clean it when I'm ready, but can still handle it gently.

      @@JunkJournalideas thank you! I will be trying to make air dry clay with it as well, though that recipe (by a sweet lady at the channel Creative Cat) calls for cornstarch, and I am not sure if I will be able to use the same cornstarch baby powder for that as well? I will try it, but I’m not that familiar with regular cornstarch… is it similar to the cornstarch baby powder? Do you know? Thank you for the fast response and I will be watching some more of your videos, there’s so much inspiration here!

      @danih7577 10 місяців тому

      Yes! Talc is a mineral that is contaminated with asbestos. It should never be used. In the US J & J was sued for causing ovarian and testicular cancer. They engage in a lot of coverups and test all their products repeatedly on animals despite animal testing being poor science. Animal tests give them plausible deniability. I don’t buy any of their products because of a long history of deceptive practices. Ex. Baby powder is not tested once on animals, instead these tests are conducted repeatedly on animals with same results to protect the company from negligence. A common practice sadly.

    Great video as always Donna!!! Your so informative and fun to listen too.. this isn’t much of a tip, but I have a cheap basin that I fill with warm water and a little bit of washing soap beside me, when I’m done using the pallet knives and stencils..I just throw them into the basin to soak. I clean them in the there and then give them a second washing in the sink.
    I kinda get busy making art and tend to set my stencil or knives to the side, well… there much harder to clean when they are dry.. hence why had to do this method.. 😅❤..

    For cleanup just keep a pan of water next to you like a cheap roaster. Stencils will lay flat and so will the knives. Just drop them end until you are finished working. The water will break down the binders so it will go down the sink fine.

    Thanks for this video and your tips. I’ve made my own texture paste, too, but without the glue-just straight acrylic paint and baby powder. I’ve got one small collage piece I did two years ago using it and the stencil work is still intact. One thing: adding baby powder to acrylic paint reduces the natural gleam of the paint , so when it dries it looks more matte than straight acrylic paint, maybe a bit more like chalk paint. I’m wondering if your formula, with the pva glue, helps to keep a bit of the shine.

      the variation colour i have used is a cream using a bit of yellow to the white, it's only ever been subtle to take the stark white away, and then no need to add colour over top.
      if you want to use blue paint instead of white you can, but your colour will be dictated by the amount of paint you use as the recipe (same amount as if it was white) if you have some pigment paints you could add that if you want more colour bc pigment shouldn't alter the recipe too much. hope this helps Sudarshan hugs Donna

    Thanks for the explanations of the recipe Donna. I had wondered why I couldn't buy Talcum Powder any more !
    I'll try with Cornflour - UK name - it is rather confusing to me in the UK that common or garden household stuff has different names. e.g. Baking Soda = bicarbonate of soda, not "Baking Powder" (Bicarb + tartaric acid/cream of tartar - see what I mean?)
    So my question is - do you know what "spackling paste" is? It seems to be used by modellers to add texture. Is it "Polyfiller?" Can YOU make it?
    Re cleaning up -
    I'd have a washing up bowl of warm soapy (washing up liquid) water handy. Pop the stensils in as soon as you have finished with them and rinse the paste off immediately. Ditto a jam jar of water to keep the spatula in when it is not in use. Kitchen Roll (paper towel) at the ready! There's nothing harmful in the ingredients. I'm the responsible dish washer any way!😇

    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  Рік тому +1

      you're welcome Jacky, changing the talcum powder recipe is not surprising these big companies all about cuts to make more money.
      the names get me too i'm always googling lol.
      "spakling paste" is what builders use to either repair or finsing plaster walls, it's handy for crafting!
      I'm not sure if you can make it? i havent tried.
