I REALLY appreciate artists / crafters like you who share such valuable tips and ideas. Thank You! Taking your time to teach strangers.. is AMAZINGLY !! THANK YOU !! Time isn't free. It's the most valuable thing in life !! It proves to me how much compassion that's still left in this messed up world. The art community, regardless, of your " cup of tea " seems to be the most passionate, positive, happy, etc., people in the world! ( I could go on and on....I'm sure it's not just my opinion). Art is truly in everything. So really every single person is an artist in some way! Art is an universal language. THANK YOU ! (( I hope you can tell how THANKFUL I am.. 😜 )) LOL 💕Casey 💕

Oh wow thank you ! You deserve a thumbs up two, pun intended haha, I read it just before it happened and so then, pure delight...like watching mr. dressup again!!!!
It's best to pour the plaster into the water. Water first then plaster, let it set for a minute before mixing. Better have the paint and glue ready to add.
Wow I see the difference and I’m grateful for you sharing this video! It’s really is helpful. Plus you save from spending the real stuff already done… thank you again.💫💫💫
When measuring out the plaster, you might put the measuring cup inside the bag and scoop the powder into it then just level it off with a knife. You'll need to open up the carton all the way. Or transfer the plaster to a bag.
When I measure gooey things like paint, I get a syringe that's used for injecting meat with flavouring or marinade. Some can hold about a cup of 'goo' and that way the measurement is correct and the container, the syringe barrel is naturally squeegied clean with minimal rinsing required. They're available usually by the emergency cookware/foil roasting pans area of the grocery store. Thank you for this recipe, it's just what I needed :D
Thank you Debra. That glue had me wanting to giggle like a school girl! ! I tried so hard to hold back. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching. 😊👍
Your are so real! I laughed and enjoyed watching you, it was just like watching myself. LOL I did learn a lot to save money and create art in a joyful way.
You have a beautiful voice, kind of reminds me of Jamie Lee Curtis. Thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to trying this out to make steampunk patterns on my son's bedroom wall!
you all probably dont give a shit but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost the login password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Caiden Nehemiah thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
It was great watching this. I like the idea of cutting costs by making your own product without sacrificing quality. You have a great sense of humor; I was never bored. Thank you for sharing. God bless.
I must admit that I was in a fit of giggles watching the glue being poured...some of us artistic lot are sooo immature. Thank you for the great information and the laughter! :)
Love your detailed info and humor.Crafting is suppose to be fun, and a learning experience and often times experiment. You never know what you might come up with without even knowing it! Also wanted to add that most counties have a hazardous waste station for people to take their old paint, stains, varnish, polyurethane, primers, cleaning supplies, pool cleaners, car fluids, wall paper remover, paint thinners, grout, drywall repair paste, everything you need for dozens of DIY projects. And here's the best part... It'a all free! In my city /county you can get up to 10 items every 30 days. You do have to show your ID so don't forget that. And my hazardous waste station allows 10 items per car load. So if I go with my friend , that's 10 items for both of us. Not ten each! So go by yourself or take separate cars. Just an FYI! I haven't paid for paint, mineral spirits, car oil ,most of my cleaning supplies, or pool shock for 6 years. And you all know that you can take white paint to the place you bought it( sherwin williams,Lowes, walmart etc..) and they will mix and make your desired color for you. Usually for free. Find out if there's a hazardous waste station near you. It will save you hundreds of dollars in your crafting products . Have a blessed day!
Thank you for your video. I enjoyed it very much. I am going to make the Gesso and the texture past too. That would save me a lot of money. I use Gesso a lot.
I know this was made 3 years ago but I want to thank you so much for this video. I will be using a spin and bowl to mix it up. It may be easier for me.
It's funny how people basically make their own primer and turn around and call it Gesso. The gesso comes from working the old walls before the day of Sheetrock. They nailed strips of wood on the wall of studs. Then "float" some mortar then use the Gesso as the final coat. So with that said you could use the same thing found in joint compound. What I don't understand is you could save yourself all that time making it by just using a good primer. And by saying that I don't mean buying it at an arts supply store, but at a hardware store. The reason I don't recommend an art supply, is they charge too much.
I actually use joint compound in many of my canvas works. I use it for textured tree's, crosses, etc. I don't know if I'm allowed to put a link here or not, but I'll just give you the name of the shop and you can look it up on Etsy. You will find textured items there. I'm not trying to sell anything ... but if you have a question about how to use joint compound (I've used mosaic grout, too), let me know. The shop is called AlteredSensations. One more tip: you can buy caulking in the tube, but it takes longer to dry. Plus, there's so much of it you need a good stopper to keep it from dying out.
While true- The amount of gesso you can make and customize by just using powder, any kind of acrylic paint and PVA is still cheaper than primer from a hardware store.
The only issue with joint compound that I've found in my tests is that it needs to be mixed with more glue for it not to crack over time. It tends to be slightly too brittle.
My mom was an art teacher and told me to never buy GESSO cause it's a ripoff. She said to make my own but I never knew how. Thank you! I will use it tomorrow on my paper mache project.
i cant believe i was here 3 years ago but here i am was looking for something else but im really glad i found this lol cause ive forgotten about this...
I'm new to using the texture paste. I'm so glad I watched your video on how to make my own. I was going to buy it, but the company where I was going to buy it sells for $8.00 for 4 oz. From your video, I think I'll make it. I'm wanting to add color before I use it. Would suggest I add color just before using or add and let set? Sorry, as I said I've never used this stuff before. Thank you so much for sharing. You've saved me some money! That's a big deal! So, again, Thank you!
Gloria Sperring you're most welcome!! Whenever I want colored texture paste I always add the color right before using it. I find that works best for me and then I don't end up with a whole batch of a color I may not use again... if that makes sense... lol. Thank-you so much for reaching out! 😊😊
I love your videos! Thank you for helping me find ways to do so much more with my art journaling (on a budget lol)You are a great teacher ,and I love your personality and spirit. New subbie! ❤️ from PA
TFS. I love your style. And I wouldn't have minded if you'd burst out laughing at your glues antics, I did and I needed that laugh today! Thanks for the recipes and tips. Thanks to you, I can save a little more money now, and I get so much satisfaction from making as many supplies for my projects myself; it adds to the creative process somehow.
Thank you that was very good. You made it so clear I want to go to the kitchen and start working on the each of the items you made. I doI do want to mention that we can see the texture as you showed it at the end very clearly that stood out very well thank you again
Hi, I am just learning about Gesso even though I have been a card maker and make crafts for years, since I am disabled, have a very small craft budget, so I save where I can, and I'm at home almost 24/7. so painting, card making, etc, keep me from losing my mind, and it is fun! I really liked your video and laughed to. SO funny about the glue sound. Our minds must have been in the funny gutter, lol. I looked at your videos and love some of the things you made (well more than a few) so I am subscribing and gave a THUMBS UP! thank you so very much. I love your personality and it is ALWAYS FUN TO LAUGH! :) PS, I decided to stalk you on Pinterest and so GLAD I DID!
When chalk paint became in vogue for painting old furniture I started seeing recipes for it and decided that I would try just the plaster of paris mixed into regular flat wall acrylic latex paint and it works fine to make that chalk flat, no primer needed paint. It certainly is cheaper! I was considering using that mixed in white latex paint the same way for gesso for canvas. So, I guess you have led me in that path! I'm just wondering why the glue? Doesn't that make it set up really hard and yet not sandable? For texture, yes, makes sense, but not for just gesso? I guess I'm still just wondering what all do you do with it? Will it make a toothy base for soft pastels on paper or wood or whatever you want to use for a base for your pastel painting?
wuznotbornyesterda a very good question! My understanding is the glue is added as a binder to ‘hold’ the gesso to the substrate your painting onto. The glue does not make it set up hard and still allows the gesso to have the tooth you need. 👍🏻
Hope you feel better for that ! How rude 😂 I thought the cream coloured paste you made looked much more dimensional . Thankyou for sharing and giving us a giggle . Those noises just couldn't get more comedic . Lol
How to make Elmer's glue at home" The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online. Pour 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Whisk the ingredients together until they're blended well. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens.
But it can’t be the exact same, because PVA glue is acrylic, it is basically the same as the base they use for making acrylic paint... Gesso, of course, is a simple acrylic paint...
More like wallpaper paste perhaps? IDK if that's a good idea to use for art/craft unless it is a temporary thing because of the sugar in it may draw bugs/mites, silverfish, etc. Definitely not an archival thing. For a quick kid art thing, fine, but for something you want to keep for years it would be worth the cost of commercial glue.
polyfilla ready mixed in the tubes for texture is great and very cheap, i can't tell the difference between that and the trendy expensive craft brands.
the texture you did with the heat gun reminded me of raindrops on a window if your mom is using baby powder......it's made of cornstarch these days. It's got me wondering if cornstarch would work?
Rtsy Frtsy they do look like train drops! Never thought of that. And yes, my mom uses baby powder. She likes it just fine. Another viewer said she tried cornstarch and it sort of turned into more of a slime. ...lol. If you do try cornstarch, please share how's it turned out for you! ☺
I used the pink stuff for an art project when I got my art degree. Free handing texture is also a lot of fun and you never know how things will turn out. Glad I found this video though because I've always wondered how to make my own texture paste.
If your wondering if that old house paint you bought home will work check this out ... little helpful tip from google ...There actually is no difference between latex and acrylic paints because there is no latex in latex paints. Let me explain. All water based paints today are referred to as "latex", even though there is absolutely no latex rubber in the formula.Feb 15, 2011 latex paint are somewhat similar as they are produced from acrylic resin.
I am going to try your recipe tomorrow. I just ran out of bought, expensive gesso and I really like how yours was smooth. Also, I like the beige actually. Not as bright on the eyes, easier to design on before adding colors. Thanks for your advice and recipe. 😆
it nice to know I can product from home and save money and create different color texture paste. living in ND I am always looking for projects to do in the winter months. Lisa
Wish I'd found this yesterday.... I'm kicking myself now after spending hours yesterday in search of texture paste. Ended up with a tiny little container for $14 and its crap! Love your video... thanks so much for teaching us in such a fun way.
I’m new to your channel and love your information on here I cannot afford any of all this glues thank you so much for sharing this with me Be safe God bless you and yours
Just finished making my gesso and the texture paste. I used the baking soda just because I had a lot of it. The receipt was simple and easy to make. I am going to use this with a kids texture workshop! Really excited to use these mixes. Thank you. Love your easy going teaching style.
Thanks for your tutorial! I too make alot of my own supplies, as I use quite a but and it is more economical for me! 🙃 I have found that Ready-to-Use Joint Compound works the best by far...it gives deep texture and holds up well!! I paint with my hands for the most part and have found that if I finalize my layers by rubbing water over it I don't have issues with cracking!
Thank you for your reply, (“Pink Stuff” is called DAP Dryden Spackling and I purchased it at our local Canadian Tire store.) I really appreciate that. I'll get some and...I'll be back to watch more good things from your page.
I really loved the 2nd part... "The noises cracked me up!". Thank you, needed a little giggle( rough day) I appreciate the informative( and a great way to save 💰 money!)
Marcella Zimmer you’re most welcome and the recipe is on the description of the video. If you click on the little down arrow next to the title it will open up the video description. 👍🏻🤓
Thank you SO MUCH for the Gesso recipe!!! I've JUST started painting on canvas (I started out painting rocks and then mandalas), and can't really afford alot of supplies yet, AND this recipe is FANTASTIC for me, BECAUSE I ALREADY have all of these ingredients on hand!🤗🤗🤗
Hi and thank you, but I need only clear gesso to have. I have now fragrance-free on baby powder and glue of 100g only, (I live out in the country high up in Sweden, with no affairs just food affairs). Gonna have it for my watercolor pad. So I can paint better, my brother gave me the wrong and cheap watercolor pad .. Thanks tess
Hello there, I’ve just come across this video. It was the best video I have seen in a while. Not only was it informative (thank you so much for the recipes) but also the most entertaining. You have the same favourite swear word that I have 😀 and the glue - well I had a good laugh. Thank you so much. Have now definitely subscribed. 🌺
Gesso is calcium carbonate and non acrylic paint(tempura), which can be purchased cheaply and mixed together. It’s the acrylized stuff that makes it impermeable and non absorbent. You basically by rights could buy the cheapest water based tempura paint in bulk and add calcium carb(chalk) and get the best gesso super cheap! Adding a bit of matte medium or acrylized primer as a sealer first would make an amazing base on top of wood, Masonite, even artist canvas.
I've bought Plaster of Paris as it said to mix. it with water, so my idea is to mix it with PVA glue, and I just found you, and you answered my question... xxxx thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video!! Your awesome personality shines through... I can't wait to try you're recipes!! So much cheaper than the art supply store. 👍👍
Hi again. I now use those samples at Walmart for a couple bucks. I thought I may try adding unscented powder at the last just to increase firmness. The edges on that pink "Dap" remained even after drying I noticed where as the other two had lost some form. As if they spread out. Worth a try. Looking now for a good clear Gesso recipe. I use a great deal of clear in my layers . Thx again. Hoping you're well n keeping cool n still full of fun. XX's, Lynda in Utah
I just love how witty you are, I prefer to learn from teachers with humor I learn more.

Renzo good point. Thank you!
I use gesso for every thing. For my fine watercolour paper for my sketchbook and some times i buy cheap canvasses and i use it for that
When working with plaster of Paris use a mask if you have one, don't breath it in. Great tutorial well presented.

I would use a mask when using baby powder as well.

NG B have fun with it! Just be certain to store in a very air tight container! 👍🏻
You'll also be able to pull the whole painting of at once if u do right.
And no joke, I think it's what makes it thick enough or hold together so that it doesn't seem into the canvass.
I love the video, you are a great teacher
lisa pevey thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Hope you feel better for that ! How rude 😂 I thought the cream coloured paste you made looked much more dimensional . Thankyou for sharing and giving us a giggle . Those noises just couldn't get more comedic . Lol
Doreen Watson-read Oh my. I felt much better. 😂😂 Thank you for watching. 👍🏻
I love the way you’re explaining this it’s so easy to follow Thanks 👏🏻👏🏻👍👍👍😘
You’re very welcome! 😊
Hello what is 'the pink stuff' please, couldn't get the make from the vid. Many thanks
Katie Millard sorry I missed your question! It's called DAP Dryden Spackling and I purchased it at our local Canadian Tire department store. 😊

I think you have just saved me quite a bit of money. Thanks, I will be making my own from now on,
good to hear Lillian! Thank you!
How to make Elmer's glue at home"
The same glue that is used in school.
Jude W oh wow!! Thank you!
Could you use something other than corn syrup its not easy to buy in Europe
FYI: This would mimic the school glue only, not normal PVA white glue.
It is a best way to make homemade gesso and texture paste , too expensive at the shops. Thank you for this video.
You’re most welcome!
polyfilla ready mixed in the tubes for texture is great and very cheap, i can't tell the difference between that and the trendy expensive craft brands.
LoveArts exactly!!! I love finding those cheaper alternatives to the more expensive "art" supplies.
Loved your humor!! It was hilarious. 😆😁
Flores awe, thank you! I’m very much a child at heart. lol
@@mytherapyroom well you my dear have a beautiful heart. Thank you for sharing this creative knowledge with us who are starving for it. :)
the texture you did with the heat gun reminded me of raindrops on a window
if your mom is using baby powder......it's made of cornstarch these days.
mytherapyroom I did try cornstarch... Yes.. It becomes slimey lol. The combination of startch n baking soda can't make a paste

murni msu I kinda wondered if it wouldn't go slimy. Yuck! ! lol
I used cornstarch and it works great. Not a lot of grip, so I use it as a primer and to accent detail on projects.
I used the pink stuff for an art project when I got my art degree. Free handing texture is also a lot of fun and you never know how things will turn out. Glad I found this video though because I've always wondered how to make my own texture paste.
Denise Caskey good to hear someone else has used the pink stuff. Glad you found the video helpful. 👍☺
What is the name of the pink stuff. Did not catch it.Thank you
If your wondering if that old house paint you bought home will work check this out ...
little helpful tip from google ...There actually is no difference between latex and acrylic paints because there is no latex in latex paints. Let me explain. All water based paints today are referred to as "latex", even though there is absolutely no latex rubber in the formula.Feb 15, 2011
latex paint are somewhat similar as they are produced from acrylic resin.
Excellent information!! Thank you for sharing. 😊
Do you think poster paint would work in both recipes, instead of acrylic paint?
Great Info. Thank You!
Sto
Hi! Many thanks from a beginner artist. From New Zealand xx

You’re welcome!
Really like that you try all different mediums to use...
lambsbaaa thank you!
Smart ideas...thanks for your great video
You’re most welcome!
I am going to try your recipe tomorrow. I just ran out of bought, expensive gesso and I really like how yours was smooth. Also, I like the beige actually. Not as bright on the eyes, easier to design on before adding colors. Thanks for your advice and recipe. 😆
Nadine Girouard yay! I think you'll like it very much!
it nice to know I can product from home and save money and create different color texture paste. living in ND I am always looking for projects to do in the winter months. Lisa

Sherryann knowles you’re welcome!
Thanks for your tutorial! I too make alot of my own supplies, as I use quite a but and it is more economical for me! 🙃
I have found that Ready-to-Use Joint Compound works the best by far...it gives deep texture and holds up well!!
I paint with my hands for the most part and have found that if I finalize my layers by rubbing water over it I don't have issues with cracking!
You’re very welcome and thank you so very much for the tip to prevent cracking! That makes total sense to use water. 🥰
Great video. Thank you. I also liked your gesso better. Plus the glue noise made it a comedy. I giggled every time it made a noise.
+Mic Kline oh my......it was hard to refrain from an all out belly laugh. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. :)

Jeanne awe, thank you so much for the very kind words. 💖
Thanks for your recipe.
W. Rusty Lane you’re welcome! 👍🏻
Great info! Thank you!
I've bought Plaster of Paris as it said to mix. it with water, so my idea is to mix it with PVA glue, and I just found you, and you answered my question... xxxx thank you!
Excellent! You’re welcome! 👍🏻😃
awesome! Thank you!!! This is exactly the information I needed!!!
Donna Beth Feagins you’re very welcome!
Thank you so much for making this video!! Your awesome personality shines through... I can't wait to try you're recipes!! So much cheaper than the art supply store. 👍👍
janice famulari awe, thank you very much!!! And you're most welcome for the video. A much cheaper way to go. ❤👍😊
Lynda, I did a video on how to make your own clear gesso as well. Here's the link. 😊
