- Learning solfege will transform your guitarist and musicianship journey. While solfege may not be familiar to many guitarists, a good grasp on solfege syllables will enable guitar players to immediately recreate melodies upon hearing them, something that many guitarists struggle with! I've gotta say, since seeing your vid, which is the only one I've seen and I don't think there's a better way to explain it at this level it was an eye opener, soo.. my point
Gotta say ever since watching your vid on solfege I'ts been a more than usual instance in my thought life, I believe after some consideration that understanding this, more thoroughly, will be breakthrough, eureka moments from then on, because I've been .ostly self taught I didn't pay much attention at music class at school but still understand that the basics are foundations, set them right add the cornerstone perfectly(analogy for getting the very basics fully grasped will lead to a far less crooked wall/understanding and outcome)
The chord progressions, the intervals in between each change, over the melody is so much easier to be creative when you have a grasp on that- John mayer my paraphrasing of some of his teachings, humming the notes having a set way as a guideline and not a rigid rules, so I'm in on your course- where do I sign up?

I have Sa Re Ga Ma stuck in my head for life and can sing it in the reverse order without thinking. Now I have to memorize Do Re Mi Fa until I can sing them in reverse order too 😵
No you totally don’t! Just use SRGMPDN instead of doremi. It’s just a different set of syllables with the same function 😉

I've played since I was 5, and I am very impressed with the way you explain this system! I've never heard of it, but I guess the Solfeggietto song makes sense now.
Bluegrass picker here, but this should really help my improvisation... I have majorly relied on numbers rather than syllables. This will be hard for me to make the switch in my brain, but it will pay off with the chromatic notes Do Di Re Ri Mi...

It's a really useful system to train musicianship!
I prefer the movable do and with minor la. So to me minor starrs with la, dorian starts with re, lydian starts with fa, and so on.
If it works for you, go for it! I like to keep my tonic as 'Do', easier to remember the various scale degrees ;)

@Neil Chan Music yeah every day, and this us like our nation anthem in some places, mostly sung on 'Hogmanay' every year with a nip of single malt. There are some fine collections of whiskies floating about, west coast Scotland is still speaking Gailic, most lochs are west cost, west coast there are 100s if not more of fresh, sea water mix great if you like fly fishing. Where are you from?

@Neil Chan Music as a Scottish citizen I can say the same for Scotland on the diversity front, which isn't a war so doesn't really have a front, but sadly some of our indigenous citizens have a low tolerance for "outsiders" which I believe is an unwise way of thinking, its wiser as humans as a race as one, to stick together regardless of the 'what is essentially the inability or choi e to not adapt to reality as it unfolds through discovery of ourselves our potential as individuals is strengthened by having friends' so the locals that can't accept "non nationals" as the same in an innate sense(were all the same and different, no one is better innately but you are a better singer than I am, I might be a better blues player idk) it's the choice where it all comes down to wether to allow yourself to become better by accepting the fact that we're not divided lik "full stop" the truth is that's just like borders imaginary, and those are changeable through choice. That's just something of an opinion of mine on culture and cultural history shows we've been mixing cultures since the beginning of history so why do ppl still hold on to bigotry, it's either simple innocent ignorance or ignorance by choice of the facts, the history and the reality we are living in now weighed up to a wiser point of view. To go further we need to be willing to to the things we havnt done before, and for some, coming back to the local Scottish people that are racist, and are bigots, they will be lost In time as it fades away as short as life us, I'm just a big believer in cultures and races mixed is a good thing when common sense is applied. There's a song in there maybe lol! Deep.

Don't get me wrong, you eill find what you are looking for if you know what you're looking for, eg if you visited Scotland expecting good welcoming and nice kind people you will find that, birds of a feather flock together, the other people who aren't so kind they uncannily seem to find each other and this is nature. So if you visited Scotland or any country the person you are, you'd be fine. You seem like a kind person, singing auld lang syne to your elders us a beautiful thing. Honourable.

If it follows the tonality for example RE major,the notes inside is the RE major but,D-E-FA#-G-A-TI-Db-D it is still called C-D-E-FA-G-A-TI-C when solfèse today

I recently started playing solfege on guitar using intervals. I played the root and its 2nd, 3rds, 4ths etc and sang their Solfege tones. Can you do videos on that.

I mean in jazz ,all chords might not be in functional harmony right...
And to target certain intervals over chords ,should we think about the underlying harmony or the tonic..?

Hi Shiva, that's a great question. Yes it gets more complicated when you talk about key changes. The solfege system only applies in tonal music, which means it applies in functional tonality and modality. Jazz chords are tonal and have a harmonic function, although they can be very complex. The key is to understand within that musical phrase which is the tonic note, and build up your solfege starting with 'Do' on that tonic note. Hope this helps!

Glad that you enjoy my lessons Manolo! I have used many theory textbooks, but none have really focused on solfege so far (even though it is so important to musicianship!). The text book i used is "Techniques and Materials of Music: From the Common Practice Period Through the Twentieth Century".
BUT it is really very very detailed and quite advanced. If you're starting from scratch I'd recommend going to your local music store and finding an introductory theory book first :)

There are different schools of thought on this, but for myself yes I always conceptualise the tonic note as 'Do'.

You need to practice just singing the scales alone with solfege syllables. Over time you'll make the automatic mental connections!

I got almost everything in this video, except for how to translate melodies into solfeges in the first place. you make it seem so easy, ofc because your ear is trained. but for example how do you find out which note is which in the song ? just lay them out and trial and error ? or is there some secret ?
Thanks for your comment. It does get easier to identify the notes with time, but the ‘secret’ is to first sing the note you want to identify, then sing either up or down from that note along the scale until you reach ‘Do’. From there you can identify the note!

Solfege syllables refer to the respective scale degrees of a piece of music. Eg. in the key of C, 'do' is C, 're' is D, 'mi' is E and so on!
The first line of happy birthday goes: So So La So Do Ti....

I mainly use di'addario EXP 16s.

Hi Emmanuel, you need to first learn how to play a scale on the guitar. The solfege syllables correspond to their respective scale degrees. So you would play 'do' by playing note #1 of the scale, and re by playing note #2 of the scale, so on and so forth.

Solfege is intended to help you know what notes and chords you are playing, rather than just thinking of them as fingering positions on the fretboard :)
Are you using only one scale shape ?
In my practice I apply 7 main scale shapes, I more videos (and more to come) on scale shapes that you can check out!

Both are valid, it's just variations of the same concept

Get your terminology right, pal, especially when you're trying to teach. Teach right first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_notation

ok. this is a good lesson, but it should be known that there is no "Ti" in solfeggio. It does not exist and was made up ,possibly, for the film: The Sound of music. This "Ti" note is actually pronounced "ci'(like 'see")
