Tom & Jerry starring Chloe Moretz is another new HBO Max movie following Wonder Woman 1984 and the result isn't much better. Tom and Jerry has some funny moments to offer but overall the funny wacky world grows so dumb it becomes a negative, which is weird because the same wacky world has worked just great in other cartoon real-life movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And so in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's compare Tom & Jerry to Who Framed Roger Rabbit to see why it's fun wacky world became too dumb and how to avoid that happening with your film. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
In Robert Zemeckis's trailblazing combination of animation and live-action, Hollywood's 1940s cartoon stars are a subjugated minority, living in the ghettolike "Toontown" where their movements are sharply monitored by the human power establishment. The Toons are permitted to perform in a Cotton Club-style nightspot but are forbidden to patronize the joint. I think the writer put them selfs in a corner by making it an exclusive wedding. So obviously they wouldn't hire just anybody. But they could have written around that way better then stealing.

Near the start of the movie, someone should open a newspaper to the 'Jobs' section & we see that there are only 2 job vacancies in America. Both in that hotel. That explains why Tom can't look for another job. He needs that one.

Actually the mechanic of the original T&J was that the (cartoon) humans would see the cats, mice, and dogs of the world just like we see animals in real life and only through the magic of cinema, bringing the audience to their level, we’d see this anthropomorphized behavior that the humans of the cartoon world couldn’t see.
Definitely that’s out the window in this movie.
I like how the faces of the humans were never shown because it emphasizes that they're not important, or at least not as relevant as Tom and Jerry.

The fact that I, a huge fan of Tom & Jerry as a kid, saw the ads and didn’t want to see the movie says quite a bit.
It's better than the previous version where they talk and sing. But then having your teeth drilled out without painkillers is still better than that horror.
Nobody beats 40's-50's Original Tom and Jerry.

They straight up have a hotel door for Jerry’s hole. Jerry rented the place and they accepted him.
Maybe a more tangible plot would come from the sheer fact that mice and cats and cats and dogs hate each other, as the cartoon seems to portray, and in their spite for one another, Tom and Jerry’s antics cause real consequences to the hotel, to the point they both get kicked out over something serious and have to overcome their petty grievances to solve that problem in an equally cartoony way, but working together.

I personally wish to believe, considering Chloe's talent, that she thought she was signing onto the next Roger Rabbit, only realized what it would be along the way and decided to stop trying and just get over with this movie.
Funny you say that, because for her role, she was inspired by several comedic actresses (like Sandra bullock) and especially actor bob hoskins
It wouldn't surprise me. She isn't bad in it. Not great but not bad. You can see a lot of times she reacts physically to the animated characters far better than most of the other actors.
Chloe has spoken out about how disappointed she was being sexualized in The Equalizer and I Love You, Daddy. She also stated being disappointed in the immature and mundane quality of writing for The 5th Wave and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising compared to Indies in 2018. At least, The Addams Family movies and Tom and Jerry proved to be more valuable and profitable by her fans.

But WB executives get rid of Pat and Josh because they don’t want the cat and mouse to be the main focus.

Took my little brother to see this movie because the tickets were paid for and I had nothing going on at that time. 5 other people showed up 20 minutes late, 3 of them were kids. No one laughed at a single joke, not even a chuckle. The movie was painful. It was nothing, I came in with no expectations whatsoever and it was still bad. It wasn’t even so bad that it was good, it was just mediocrely bad, the worst kind of bad in my opinion. It was just boring. I asked my brother what he thought of the movie, and even he was disappointed. When I got home, I didn’t want to do anything. I was going to go to the gym and work on my homework, but this movie sucked the will to do anything out of me. I felt empty.

If I remember correctly, Chloe Grace Morets said at one point she was tired of starring in films she thought were immature and too mundane and she wanted to branch out into more sophisticated, "smart" films (this stemming from her roles in Kick-Ass, Neighbors, etc).

Tom and Jerry cartoons never had plots. They had environments they fought in for 7 minutes per episode. This is the equivalent of stretching an SNL skit into a movie.

I love videos like this that are actual constructive criticism instead of just saying "movie bad" and moving on.
My biggest problem with movies like this is that they try to recreate the same feeling from the original... without takeing in consideration that the original Tom and Jerry worked becouse it was 6 minutes animated shorts. And even then they told a completed coherent story from start to finish.
I can't even count how many times I watched Tom and Jerry with my brothers and my Father (who liked this genre even with 45yo), but this movie... I don't know if I can watch this with him even for the nostalgia :/

4. They also lack a good character setup and going against logic itself (you usually have an ID shown with your resume, noob screenwriters).
5. Putting in elements that date a film instantly.

I think what I hated the most from this movie was how the manager was portrayed as a villain despite being absolutely right in the first act for wanting the cat and mouse gone. Kayla gets a job she was not qualified for and gets rewarded for it despite being a con artist. Also Tom really didn’t deserve any bad thing they happened to him.
Tom never deserved the bad shit that happened to him.

@@ewwaski No I was agreeing. It actually was competently done. Wholesome family movie, some more sophisticated funnies thrown in ("maybe he's a gender fluid mouse"). I'm sure most people commenting on this haven't seen it. The trailer is kind of a mishmash that makes it look dumb as hell but once everything is seen in its context it's a different story.

What I really appreciate is Filmento does more than just call a movie dumb. But he offers suggestions as to how to make the movie better. Not everyone has the background/ability to create a better movie on the spot. Good work, my good sir👍🏾

The most annoying part of this movie for me is that Luis from Ant-Man frees Tom & Jerry after he’s fired, gets them riled up to ruin the wedding and the main character, definitely with malicious intent, and then in the end, there are NO consequences for him. I think he gets a girl at the end? I can’t remember. But the movie completely forgets that they set him up as a villain for a bit, and just moves on because everything else was way more important I bet.

Chloe Moretz’ character told Michael Pena’s character that Tom and Jerry told her everything about his sabotage plan and that she’d keep it on the hush hush in order to protect his job. I guess because her character is just that nice?
Still he should’ve had gotten some comeuppance and I expected him to get arrested, but I guess not. He was just a needless jerk towards Moretz’ character for no reason other than “inexperienced lazy millennial”.

You know, this whole sentient cartoon pets was already explored before, and I don't mean in the movie "Pets", but in "The Looney Toons Show", with Sylvester and Tweety, where they acted like cartoons when alone, but as pets around humans.
Maybe they could have done that Chloë Grace Moretz character were the only one who realized about their intelligence, making her feel disconnected from the rest of the world, this would also tie into Toms ambition of being a musician, as she would be the first human to actually believe in him.

Actually, the creators of Tom & Jerry took the name from ANOTHER Tom & Jerry series from the early 1930s. The difference is that the "other" original Tom & Jerry series involved two apparently human guys rather than anthropomorphic animals. Ik this movie is bad coz i fell asleep while watching it which has never happened before.
There's also the matter of how the makers of this dumb movie simply stole all of their "comedy" from the original source material. There is absolutely zero creativity involved here.

I suppose if you haven't seen that many T&J cartoons you'd be surprised with it, but pretty much 100% of what I saw was lifted directly from cartoons that were made over 70 years ago.

It feels like they were trying too hard to rectify the mistake the 1992 movie made. But they assumed that mistake was that Tom and Jerry were nice to each other. Therefore, if everyone's an asshole, people will love it.
As a result, we get a human protagonist who commits fraud to get her way, Jerry being a sociopath who enjoys ruining lives and Tom being shit on because he's the "villain".
