Cruella is Disney's new villain origin story along the lines of Joker, only far from going as far with it. But the other thing Cruella is is another Hollywood female empowerment movie which we got a bad vibe from movies like Charlie's Angels and Birds of Prey. Weirdly though, Cruella seems to improve on them a lot in a way that Hollywood should learn from it going forward. So today, let's see how Cruella does the same female led movie things as Charlie's Angels and Birds of Prey but actually pulls it off a lot better.

I don't think Hollywood writers know how art works, let alone know how to write. You can't force an agenda of any kind into your writing, because forcing anything in writing forces you to jump through logical hoops. I would much prefer if they tried exploring the negatives of their agenda, and ask as many questions as possible, rather than try forcing an obsession into a positive light.

There's already been theories for years that the pirates were former lost boys who escaped from getting killed by Peter after they grow up. Peter Pan in the original novel was pretty much a dick who didn't care for anyone and kills people for fun, so it's quite easy to build Hook's backstory based on that.

I always assumed she just dyed half of it white, now she was born with it? How? Why? Or her parents getting killed by dalmatians, like wtf? What were they thinking. I wrote on another comment, take out the happy ending, everything with 101 dalmatians but keep the concept of "Woman becomes what she was fighting against" and give it some half competent writers, that sounds like a good movie

I can see enjoying this one if you haven't seen the original, for sure. Or if you just don't care about, like, corporate profiteering (which it's fine to not care about; do you).
But I just can't bring myself to watch a movie that's, "Remember that villain who was obsessed with murdering puppies for her fashion line? What if we made _her_ the hero in her own movie and presented her in a sympathetic light to profit off of name-recognition and girl-bossism?" Like the idea is so blatantly cash-grabby and so contrary to the spirit of the source material that I just can't bring myself to separate it from that corporate baggage.
If you watched and enjoyed the movie, power to you.

It's not garbage in the sense of Charlie's Angels which can't even stand on its own, but its still upsetting because it walks over preestablished mythos in order to make money.

I'll go a step further and say it was amazing! To be fair to the people criticizing it, I wanted to slap someone when I saw the "Mother killed by dalmatians" scene, and by the time she was working for that department store, I was resigned to an uninspired villian-is-a-victim story, but as soon as it turned into a revenge plot I was hooked. The goal isn't to kill the Baroness, or steal from her, or upstage her. It's to make her suffer, and because there's so many ways to do that, the main character can keep changing gears and prevent the story from getting stale or predictable. An added benefit of a revenge plot is that the character still seems cruel. I could never reconcile this character as the same one from 101 dalmatians, but since I already saw "Malifacent" I knew not to try.

do not flame me on this but, i saw a comment where they said that cruella's attitude or whole personality in this movie makes sense. where they explained that since she basically took the baroness' title, being fashion itself, maybe the title/status got into her head too much, that she became the one she despised the most (being like the baroness).
in the movie we can already see the lengths she would do and take for her to achieve the vision she has. i mean, we saw her already sewing insects in a dress. who knows, maybe overtime her ambition and passion in fashion grew to much, to the point where she would skin 101 dalmatians just to achieve the perfect dress/coat in her late 40's or 50's.
i don't know, it doesn't sit right to me that people are saying that the cruella in the movie is not the cruella they know. when the cruella they "know" was a 40 or 50 something year old lady, while the cruella in this movie is in her 20's. people can change drastically when they grow old. cruella can be a "non-evil" character in her 20s, and can, might be a dog skinner in their 40's.
also pointing at the people who are discrediting filmento's opinion about how good the movie is by saying "it's not the cruella we know!!!". filmento's point in this video was how the movie cruella did a good job presenting female empowerment in a film, not how good the movie was in terms of being "accurate" to the source material. if it were that, then this would be a whole different video.
(and before you fact check on me, yes, i know in the book she isnt poor, that her family were shady people and that she was already an evil bastard of a child herself. but since a lot of people are referring to disney's animated version, which didn't include cruella's family and childhood background, the ideas and argument that me and the comment i saw, can still stand.)

i get your point but as a lot of people, her not following the source material is what really annoyed me. i’m really glad that the message this movie has is actually well done but i think cruella wasn’t the best character to pick for it
obviously it can happen that she wasn’t like she is in her 40s-50s but it felt really weird and out of place? (what really made me annoyed was that she loves puppies and actually has one! but isn’t he original movie she wants them dead for their fur)
it just pisses me off that disney wants to stay in their safe family friendly zone and not take a step further to show for example her actually having some not some good thoughts about her dog or baroness’s dogs to show us that she isn’t mentally not sane
it would’ve been a completely new character i’m sure i would’ve loved this movie but unfortunately i think cruella as the mean character of this one doesn’t fit well
but that being said that’s just how i view this movie and i still agree with most of your points!

Unless Disney will actually make her descent into evil madness as a sequel to this. How fashion consumed her to the point she was willing to kill puppies who she previously loved. Instead of a more hopeful movie like the first one, it will be a downward spiral into the callous character that she will be in the 101 Dalmatians movie. I’d love to see that but I’m not sure how it can be made family friendly 😔.

It is questionable, that Disney titled this movie "Cruella" even though this version barely resembles the original character. But I wouldn't say, that I would like it less because of that fact. If you would change the title and name of the character the movie wouldn't be better, people just would like it way more.

@@janmuller3246 I would argue that in this case being tied to another franchise automatically muddles the audiences expectations for the main character, which inherently makes the film worse. If you were to remove the dalmatians, the name and the hair then you have an original film concept that works independent of anything else. The purpose of "Cruella" was as an origin story, and in that respect, it does NOT work because it doesn't actually explain the origin of the character Cruella De Vil from either the animated classic or the later live-action film.

Disney today seems to believe that we can never fathom having our main character be an antihero. In maleficent, an evil witch who cursed a young girl is suddenly transformed into a forest guardian trying to protect her land. In Artemis fowl, what was originally an apathetic and cold young man looking for wealth turns into a goody-two-shoes who wants to save his dad.
Disney has to realize that it’s ok for your main characters to not only have flaws, but for them to maybe not always be the good guy
Something else that came to my mind later on, while some may give the argument that maleficent is a reimagining of the story and therefore not necessarily bound to keeping maleficent as the villain, the same can not be said about Cruella and Artemis. Artemis Fowl is meant to be an adaptation of the first book, where the character in the book is arguably at his worst. And with cruella, this is meant to be a prequel, so by definition of the term, it is obligated to establish what made the character turn into the character we originally introduced to.

Disney had many original live action films that not many people watched. Its too niche, too simple, nothing out of the ordinary. They eventually stopped making those disney originals.
When you look at this movie for a second time, an eccentric person for a certain hobby, wants to be big in that field, is beaten down by schoolmates and their first boss because they were weird, then was picked up by some top shot in the industry where they use that opportunity to make it big as well, eventually defeating that said top shot or rival. It's clichéd. I'm even reminded of Devil Wears Prada for half of it but the main character was super eccentric.
If it wasn't for the fact that this was that puppy killing villain, no one would probably turn an eye on it aside from Disney fans.

While I loved the movie, I think the only way they could do a sequel justice is by showing how Cruella's need for attention consumes her and those she loves. As the bills pile high and competition heats up heading into the gloriously excessive 1980s, Cruella & Co. become more and more immoral in their quest to be London's best... culminating in her attempting to skin the very puppies she claims to love so much.

Heres th problem, cruella basically becomes the thing she was fighting by the end of the film and the thing she was fighting was horrible but we are supposed to somehow root for that? Like we WANT to see a seemingly decent person become a thief and a villain and abandon her better virtues to win at all costs?
Joker was dofferent because Arthur was a mentally damaged loser that fell even further and rather than rooting for him to become a killer it was more of a witnessesing of his falling apart to the point he feels happy with destruction. Unlike Maleficent, where most of the story takes place after the curse. But mainly it's a reimagining.

  • @BuckHunter103

I still don’t like how this movie tried to justify one of the most sadistic animated villains in history by essentially making her the exact opposite of what she once was, but it’s nice to finally hear that there is a good feminist movie that I wouldn’t mind watching when my Mom inevitably makes me watch it when it no longer carries the $30 surcharge.
Can we even call it a feminist movie, though, if the conflict seems to revolve more around the struggles of undervalued/underpaid workers and have almost nothing to do with Cruella being a woman? If anything, this is an argument against blaming all of your problems on the fact that you were born in a less-than-ideal lot in life and argues you can still achieve amazing things if you put in more hard work and speak up more than others. That’s obviously far more empowering to everyone everywhere and teaches the importance of being assertive and firm if you want to ever be more than a cog in the machine, but it does heavily counter a lot of arguments suggesting that minorities cannot possibly succeed unless society as a whole makes it easier for their group to do so. They may have to work harder and take more risks to break through the ceiling, sure, but that’s true of anyone that wants to be groundbreaking-there are a lot of forces in various industries preventing creativity and upward mobility in all but the most passionate and hard-working individuals.
Hold on, I need to lie down after questioning my own deeply-held beliefs. Great video, I’ll keep it in mind if I ever want to write a story encouraging people to fight climate change for their own safety and stability.

I feel like we have different opinions, though you seem understanding.
I have a different opinion, the movie's goal (well, empowerment for any group) is to inspire them through example, the thing is that for an audience to really understand the character in question, they need to relate to them, now, you will need to put them in a realistic world (through which I mean that the world needs to have clear sets of rules in fantasy places where the protagonist uses the rules provided to them and fair against the odds. Real life already does that for you so you don't really need to do anything.)
What the protagonist did was to set an example that in a world similar to ours, on equal grounds which managed to capture the interest and emotions with our protagonist. women are very well capable of vast sums of potencial similar to how men may be, in a sense, the movie is proving this WITHOUT having direct competition with men. We don't live in a world where its always a man vs woman (I do acknowledge that many countries still face the issues and thats where the feminists should actually do their protests instead of America where woman are already given the chance like men.) The real world is a competition between people both genders and examples can be set by either one of them.

If the movie was serious, it might be an important point. Basically, hero goes on a justifiable ruthless revenge plot using every provocative method possible, but never stops, and when her creativity runs out, all that's left would be a desire to one-up the fashion and moral norms. And there wasn't really anyone who could actually restrain her destructive urges in a comforting way while it was possible
I mean the way she ends up in the cartoon is not too contrary to what's portrayed in this movie, which is nice for an origin story
PS. So the role model would be "show them, but this is how you end up if you go overboard"

I had some issues with this movie. Like, she's magically born with black and white hair perfectly split down the middle and for some reason people act like she's hideous? The mom getting yeeted by the dogs was so unintentionally hilarious my friends were choking from laughter. Her taking on the name De Vil from overhearing them talk about a car was super dumb and super cliché (why can't people just have names?). And for the ending, I joked that she probably stuffed a parachute in her dress in case she gets pushed over like her mom (because that would be super dumb) and that's exactly what happened. Overall, her character felt like the polar opposite of how Cruella should be and I can't see at all how they're gonna transition her into a puppy skinning maniac.
Also, the post-credits scene implies that the 101 dalmatians are a product of incest and I'm not entirely sure they thought that through. One of the dalmatians Cruella stole was pregnant, and then Roger and Anita gets sent a dalmatian puppy each from Cruella. I know inbreeding is a thing with dogs, but I don't think Disney wants to condone that either.

Aside from what you listed - I was also really annoyed with how passive her friends were. The more she escalated into mania and madness / villiany the more they noticed and whined only to fold over like oragami and then instantly forgive her with the slightest bit of work. I would have loved to see her really LOSE the very thing that elevated her...
Its still interesting that, in my mind, she still turns INTO the Baroness herself. So we kind of see our heroine (anti-hero?) turn into the villian at the end... idk.
OVERALL??? The movie, as its own, would have been a better story to tell in my opinion. Those issues - at least - could have been cleared up by erasing the "need" to throw in the "101 Dalmations" lore.

It's fairly reasonable to assume that she'll become more like Baroness by the time 101 dalmatians happen.
I think it was a fairly clever way to both; avoid the issue of the hero being someone as despicable as Cruella; and at the same time provide answers for how it will happen eventually off screen, after the movie concluded. And lastly her home zoo that she will use for a fur collection ending with her favorite dalmatians". It's just makes much more sense to me. We have a goal. And it's to make Cruella. @@endor8witch There is no disconnect. They are both based on the original novel. The new Cruella movie covered a part of her story that only existed in the original (bullied in school, grew up poor, started her own label). They said themselves this story is a prequel to 101 Dalmatians. It's her backstory and it's connecting well to both the original story and the 101 Dalmatians story. This is before she married the furrier. Her obession with skinning dogs didn't begin until the birth of Pongo's puppies, which is going to happen in the sequel in this movie. The movie ends with Pongo himself being born first.

    • @petervitkov361
      @petervitkov361 3 роки тому +28

@@sessaku9361 No. There IS a disconnect. I don't know where you heard that it is a prequel (most likely the IMDB page - it's wrong, they didn't fact-check it), but it isn't. It's a reimagining, a reiteration. It exists in its own universe, independently of the book, the animation or the movies with Glenn Close. Many have compared it to "Joker" , and that's an appropriate comparison. Think of it this way: Cruella De Vil, played by Emma Stone, is not the same Cruella De Vil, played by Glenn Close. Just like Arthur Fleck, the Joker in "Joker", played by Joaquin Phoenix, is not the same character as Jack Napier, the Joker in "Batman", played by Jack Nicholson, nor are either of them the same character as Heath Ledger's Joker (whose real name we never even learn) in "The Dark Knight".
Three different iterations to the same concept of a character - the Joker, each in its own separate universe.
      Napier is a mobster who is disfigured by chemicals, turning his hair green and his skin chalk-white;
      The Joker in "The Dark Knight" is strongly hinted to be an ex-soldier, and he wears makeup as war paint;
Arthur Fleck is a failed comedian and clown performer with a condition that causes outbursts of uncontrollable laughter, unrelated to his current emotional state (it's a real condition called "the pseudobulbar effect").
      Same applies to Cruella:
The original version is a narcissistic psychopath who goes to extreme lengths to get what she wants, with an absolute disregard for any other living creature. An absolute monster, cannot be justified or excused.
The version seen in "Cruella" is a quirky, eccentric, extravagant woman with a passion, and talent, for fashion. Think of her as a...female Jack Sparrow or Deadpool. She's bad, she's rebellious, she breaks the norm, but she's not evil. The movie goes to great lengths to prove that. This Cruella has a dog of her own, her relationship with Jasper and Horace is much more down-to-Earth, and she doesn't treat her allies like mere means to an end, but as friends. The Baroness is the one who fills the role of the original Cruella - that of a cold, narcissistic, ruthless woman. Making THIS Cruella a "Baroness 2.0" will not happen, if there's a sequel. Need I remind you that "Star Wars" is owned by Disney, too?
There's a parallel to be drawn between Emma Stone's Cruella and the Baroness, and Rey and Sheev Palpatine. The Baroness is Cruella's biological mother, whereas Sheev is the man whose DNA was used to create a "strand-cast" (sort of like a clone, a person made from a single person's DNA) that was Rey's father, which makes Sheev Rey's pseudo-grandfather. In both instances, the main character is related to a villain whose actions cannot be justified. It's a tale as old as time - your bloodline does not define you. You are your own person and you shape your own destiny. Rey may have been created from Sheev, but she considers the Skywalkers her family, after her parents died. The Baroness may have given birth to Cruella, but she considers Catherine Miller, her adoptive mother, to be her true parent. "Cruella" is a female empowerment movie. To make Emma Stone's Cruella into a narcissistic, unscrupulous monster, like the original Cruella, and thus, like her biological mother, would be to essentially teach young women that they cannot escape their generational curses. If your biological mother or grandfather are evil, whatever you do, you too will become evil. And that goes against the lesson this movie is trying to teach young women. And before you bring up the "Estella Vs. Cruella" symbolism, that's something else. "Estella" is her "trying to fit in" personality. "Cruella" is the one where she embraces her desires to chase her dreams, unbridled by society, but not to the psychopathic extremes that the Baroness does it. That's what she means by "Cruella gets things done, Estella does not" - not that Estella has moral scruples and cares about people, while Cruella is an unscrupulous psychopath who'd drown countless humans and animals in their own blood for the fulfilment of slightest whim. Rather, that Estella is told to shut up and do what she's told. Her boss tells her to clean toilets - she cleans toilets, even though she really wants to chase her dreams and offer her ideas to the world. Cruella wants to be a fashion designer and she's a fashion designer. There's a ball with a black-and-white dress code, and she shows up in a red dress. It's a story about not letting society push you into a box, not a story about a descent into moral insanity and evil. Think of Estella and Cruella not as...Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but rather as Magikarp and Gyarados, respectively. An evolved version. She takes what she has and evolves it, rather than regressing into a carbon copy of her biological mother.

as a Cruella origin story is awful, disney chose the "dalmatians killed ma' momma so imma take revenge" path.
(I started writing the flaws and differences but ended up deleting it all, a little too much negativity)
If the movie were it's own original story instead of a "villain origins" one it would carry more weight and flavor, the "empowering" moments are for once in a lifetime not cringe (or at least they don't physically hurt) and overall a nice story if you don't know or care about og Cruella.

The Disney animated series that aired a couple of years ago 101 Dalmatian Street is a squeal to the original movie set in the present and features Cruella, now in her 80's, who in the preceding decades has gotten far more evil, deranged and psychotic.

Maybe I’m not an expert on movies focusing on female empowerment, but Cruella seems like more of a “rags to riches” story to me.

If This movie was about a original character I could probably get behind it but just the fact that It's about someone who wanted to skin puppies for a coat just isn't for me.

The movie itself is decent without taking in the franchise contextual stuffs, but it's simply cringe once you look at how the Cruella going to be from 101 Dalmatian movies.
This movie should have been its own series, its own franchise. It will surely give a much more room for creativity & also growth of its own.

I don't think she will be. The dognapping and her being accused of skinning puppies already happens in this movie. It's more of a reimagining than it is a prequel.

That's because...it IS its own thing. Many people fault this movie for not working as a prequel, having continuity errors or attempting to justify the actions of a narcissistic psycho (the original Cruella)...and that's just not the case. This movie is not a prequel, but a reiteration. It exists in its own, separate universe, completely independently. DC and Marvel do that all the time. Like "Joker" - Arthur Fleck is not Jack Napier, nor is he the Joker from "The Dark Knight". Those are three different individuals in three different cinematic universes. Same applies here. This Cruella is not that Cruella. If you want to have an enjoyable experience watching this movie, treat it like it happens in a world where "101 Dalmatians" never existed. Look at it with a fresh pair of eyes. Because that's the idea.

Honestly, I really like the Cruella film. It was enjoyable and one of my favorites. That is if you detach it from the original movie. Don't get me wrong, 101 Dalmatians is a classic. But Cruella deVil is not a character that should be redeemed. The character in the movie felt entirely different from the puppy skinner in the original movie. It doesn't give cruella any reason to hurt Dalmatians and I feel sorry that Estelle had to turn into Cruella because it makes the film seem so much sillier. It tries to redeem Cruella, but it comes up with the most basic way of doing it. If Cruella had a differently named protagonist, who turned into a different character, it could have turned out so much better than what it is. Because being connected to the original makes the plot kind of fall apart.

well yes, emma stone's cruella is different from the cruella in 101 dalamtions, but you have to remember that cruella in 101 dalmations is way older than emma stone's. and all we see in 101 dalamations is that cruella is evil and she likes dogs. i feel like emma stone's cruella doesn't try to make her different than this cruella, they just humanize her more. showing her background and why exactly she is evil. because she doesn't change. she still ends up evil. because she is a villian. estella also is cruella's "good, innocent" past. and that's why she makes the change to be cruella. it shows the build up to the 101 dalmations older cruella, but not exactly.
