Mulan 2020 is ruined by the fact that she has magical chi powers. She starts off already a martial arts master even as a child just because she was born with these powers, which misses the point of the original. Instead of proving she can do anything, she already can and just pretends she can't to fit in. In the original, Mulan was a teenage girl living in an extremely patriarchal society with clearly defined gender roles. She had to struggle to prove she could do anything a man could do, and the fact that she overcomes such adversity is what makes her a compelling character. And you might notice she does very little actual fighting in the original, but instead manages to save the day through craftiness, proving you don't need stereotypically masculine traits (i.e., brute strength, combat skills) to be a hero. Nu-Mulan doesn't struggle with anything except hiding the fact that she has magic chi powers. She doesn't have to prove that she's just as capable as a man because she manages to outperform all of them without any practice or training thanks to trait she was born with and didn't have to develop or learn how to use. And instead of using her wits to save the day at the end, she just unleashes her inherent superpowers and uses brute force to sword fight all the bad guys. And the fact that Nu-Mulan's abilities don't come from training or experience but instead from some magic power she was just born with has unfortunate implications. It's like saying, "Hey girls! You can do anything a man can do, as long as you have fictional superpowers that is!" This is supposed to be empowering?
One of the things I "like" about this version is that there are no songs. You know, because that makes it more faithful to the BALLAD (I.e, a musical). Not only that, there's a witch as well. A concept that's completely foreign to the Eastern audiences. They could've written her as a spirit or an oni, but instead is written as a bird witch that wants to be accepted by society. And this is supposed to be more realistic than the animated version..?
Great review. To think they skipped out on all that actual empowerment just to avoid her being trained by a man. Thats the basis behind many of these "new" movies. Ghostbusters 2016 for example was suppose to be a passing of the torch. Instead Amy Pascal of Sony overruled Ivan Reichman because they couldn't have men as the ones who invented the tech. Women need to do everything on their own, with no help from men. In fact men must be seen as dumb or evil. Many recent movies have followed what comes down to a set of rules so as to be considered safe and progressive.
Wow Possum, that actually made sense. Filmento, and now you, were the last seals of disapproval I need not to watch this Disney cash-grab. 1998 Mulan is still one of my favourite Disney renaissance movies and I'm always hopeful that they won't f*ck it up, but alas... And I thought you were just a raving drunk.
SPOILER: bad guy catches arrow while on a horse running full speed. Same Bad guy at the end sitting still suddenly can’t catch arrow and dies- Disappointing how many times the movie sets up rules then breaks them.
The bad guy not catching that arrow could have something to do with falling 50 feet and shattering his back and a huge piece of lumber falling on him and shattering his ribs (is there anything not broken?)
@@moobiemaykker9639 yea no cuz he's still capable of shooting the arrow to the king (and almost got him but the king caught the arrow) before mulan strikes it back on him, which shows how much it doesn't make sense :')
My favorite part of the original Mulan was when she was sent home because she couldn’t keep up with the rest of the men. Instead of leaving she used the weights to climb the pole no one else could and get the arrow no one else could. THAT is an empowered woman and for me as a six year old girl, that was what made me feel like I could do anything through perseverance and determination. The new version tells girls they can accomplish anything IF they have magic bullshit powers.
@@obukohwoogheneakpobo3011 because if that scene was in this movie she would have just toe jumped up to the top of the pole while spinning the weights over her head, and gracefully landed on the top.

yeah that just nice version... what i think... cheap chinese moive with abit of big budget set.. which will be reused in other chinese movie... so what am i looking at?
@Oxnate honestly the Qi powers would be a good addition if everyone had some level of it. Like not even to the same amount as Mulan so that the protagonist can still remain special, but enough that everyone can easily do crazy martial arts. This film goes crazy on certain scenes like flip kicking an arrow, but since only a handful of people can actually do this stuff it gets wasted a lot of the time, and we just get generic action in it place. If you want an amazing example of how to do this look at Into the Badlands. That show goes crazy with its martial arts to the point of ridiculousness, but since almost everyone can do these things not only does it ground the show a bit more, it allows them to fantastical fight scenes without it feeling like whiplash when people just start running up a wall.
I don't think making the movie almost like the cartoon one is bad. The problem is she is way too good of a fighter, she can fly and kill bunch of bad dudes. In the original, she is still a WOMAN. But she is damn smart. So she overcame the challenges by being smart. Like tying the weights together so that she can climb the tree, using the avalanche to defeat the army, using fireworks to kill the big boss, bath while others are sleeping, etc. Because before the start of the battle, she has never done any fighting, so do a lot of her friends at the camp. At the end of the camp, they are all just good enough. They are all super afraid at the start of the battle because this is their first time in a war, including Mulan.
In the original, Mulan is a normal young woman who gets by with determination and her strengths. Now, she randomly has superpowers, and can't even fail. 😔
Not to mention that Liu Yifei's acting is worst than subpar: she's the acting equivalent of a rock. Mainland Chinese audiences think she's one of the worst actresses, while Wuxia writer Louis Cha said something along the lines of "She's pretty, but because she's so deathly afraid of being ugly, she wouldn't dare make a facial expression" when one of his novels was being adapted into live-action and she was cast in it.
Basically, Disney didn't even want to put in the effort to cast a decent actress. They just picked whatever Chinese actress they could find and didn't consider her acting skill. Apparently in China they rate Liu Yifei as one of the worst actresses in the country.
The movie is far way shittier than Filmento had the guts to say. He is probably too afraid and also because he loves stale moral clichés that he likes to classify as "character development", instead of pseudo-intellectual garbage.
@@jasmineaurora3144 Nice to meet you too, Jasmine. ;) Every once in a while, a pleasant interaction arises on the internet. It's rare, but it's nice when it happens.
Ironic since it's exactly the wrappings she used to bind her breasts that literally saved her from a shuriken by acting as armor. The movie itself shows a scene where her pretending to be male flatout saved her life and then immediately plays it off as a bad thing.
Mulan gives the only message that being a regular person sucks. You have to be "The" chosen one who can do any things without even having any Special powers.
It's 3 female protagonists already that they infused with this sort of "chosen one" bullshit. Compared to Cap Marvel and Mulan, Rey is slightly better, but still 100% following this weird concept thanks to the last movie. Apparently Disney REALLY wants all of us women to know that if we're not born special and perfect, we're worthless and hard work means nothing if your genes aren't already god-like lol
You should watch the pitch meeting for mulan. He makes a similar joke about getting rid of the talking dragon to make it more realistic, then proceeds to start talking about the witch

Love the fact that chi is literally the ability to be able to control your breathing which is actually really harder than you think. Than turning the chi into magic. Good example is Atla’s chi blockers, they literally just stop your flow of blood in your circulation making you unable to bend/move.
Every single aspect of this movie is worse than the original, even the FEMINIST part was better on the original, and it was so smart and perfectly merged to the plot, but because you have to THINK to understand why the first one is empowering, it had to be changed.
I predicted the witch story and her sacrificing herself after the first trailer, no joke. Should have screencapped my post. Its so Disney it hurts. Also, you see, even not explaining why they didn't like women led to the movie getting banned in China, so well, Disney tried to cash in but failed.
@@VincitOmniaVeritas7 The extras of the movie were taken from Chinese Concentration Camps, and Disney thanked them publicly so it drew the world's attention to China's concentration camps that are doing re-education, sterilization, etc. So China went and basically banned all talk about the movie and the details surrounding it.

But this mulan has none of the original because her achivements dont feel earned
Exactly. I am disappointed this wasn't mentioned in the video. Once you give the protagonist magical powers, it becomes much less interesting watching to see if she will fail or succeed when confronted with challenging tasks.
@@misspriss2482 Rowling made the smart choice of making Harry Potter not all that good at magic, at least most of the time. He had to use his wits and rely on his friends because he couldn't solve all his problems just by being the world's most powerful wizard.
It goes deeper than that. The original Mulan wasn't even that much worse than the men. The men thought they were better and pushed Mulan around, but they were just as weak and incompetent. Mulan's success gave them a wake up call and taught them humility. Only then could they work to improve themselves.

I think you're a little trapped in your bubble here - Mulan is a superhero because the movie was made to the specifications of the Chinese government, it's no different than Hero, from... Hero... which is based on Mulan anyway
They have reversed most of the values and ideas the original Mulan depicted: - comradeship has been replaced, current Mulan is just an IndEpEndent, StrOnK and BrAvE wOmaN - her strongest trait was her brain and she always outsmarted her opponents, she was physically the weakest of the band (and it's alright, it's called a FLAW), not a goddess with super cheat powers - she struggled during the various exercises given during the training, not in this movie since again she's flawless and invincible I have only those in mind because the last time I watched the original movie was many years ago, but I'm confident that we can find many more. Anyways, it's way too kind to call it "Meh", it is objectively one of the worst remakes ever made by humanity! AND WHERE IS MUSHU?

Also in differenct video about the movie someone mention how this new Mulan supposed to be new feminist icon, yet thos film portreys feminity as something lesser than masculinity Mulan is only badass cause she happend to be born with super powers making her more “masculine’ like strong ect. As a woman should I feel inspired by all these movies with an independent strong woman as a lead? Because I'm incredibly bored. The message of those movies are basically "women good men bad". That is not realistic. Reality is more complex than that and people are not black or white. We have our strengths and weaknesses, virtues and flaws, emotions, etc. Both women and men. There is no excuse to have such bland and basic characters
Good thing for you there's plenty of older movies with female leads that display female empowerment through great story telling.. And they don't feel forced. I wish Hollywood would realize that they don't need to make their females lead perfect, because no one is perfect guy or women, we all have our faults.. When they make their characters perfect it makes it impossible for us as an audience to empathize with them.
Your take on this seems also bland and generic. What fails in some movies now it’s not that “women good men bad”, it’s that, in order to showcase female empowerment, they sacrifice proper character development, resorting on making female characters Mary Sues and one dimensional.
Come on, the trailer for Mulan was good '-', at least it gave me some hype to see the movie. Now, except Lion King, they did well in other remakes. Aladdin was very enjoyable. The Beauty And The Beast were a ctrl+c ctrl+v from the original, so it could only be good. And Mogli wasn't that bad...

10:03 except the “shower scene” concept WAS explored in the original film. There was a scene where all the guys were bathing and told Mulan to join them, not knowing her true gender.
Something I adore about the animated film: it is unapologetically a tale about a daughters love for her father. It's not about "girl power", Mulan actually grows as an individual. She was incompetent as a bachelorette and she was incompetent as a soldier too, but she knew she had to push through. She didn't do things because she's so stunning and brave, she literally felt that her old fathers life is more important than hers stemming from her belief that she is a failure. Her father wakes up KNOWING she is going to be killed and he realized that his behavior was rash. When he sees his daughter again he is over the moon happy for her return. He realizes that "honor" is SECOND to his family, not first. We can see that because he starts of putting honor first. So we have a beautiful subtextual tale of a daughter and fathers love for each other witch is then thrown away in favor of girl power. Very underwhelming way to reimagine the tale is what 2020 Mulan has been
Something I personally really like about the original is that it explores gender struggles very tastefully. As a guy, there are elements that spoke to me as well. It didn't only highlight the absurdly restricting societal expectations put on women, but also men. The fact that even an old an limping man felt the need to prove his manhood through fighting (or rather dying) for his country, highlights societal expectations put on men. To me, the way men, who have been trying to act tough so far, had to disguise as very feminine women at the end to infiltrate the palace, is also a subtle jab at ideals of manhood. Ultimately, it had a lot more than "girl power" going on, which made the story more relatable. And the parts that are "girl power" are completely earned and not bestowed onto her due to magic.
Mickey the Maniac I like the eloquence if you’re assessment. It’s true that men are exclusively expected to serve and go to war for their country. It’s true that both sexes have faced different hardships that culminate in instances where obviously too old and too injured for war father is expected to enlist and the daughter is expected to be a good wife. I like that it isn’t overt “girl power” as in the whole women can do anything nonsense that is the only thing producers feel they can allow a woman character to have. You’re right, her strength is earned. It’s an amazing film because it’s earned, almost everyone relates to making sacrifices to make a goal happen. That’s visceral and human. No one can relate to “girl power” because it’s just a platitude. There’s nothing earned and nothing gained and a huge meh to watch in a movie

Same thing with Star Wars. What is this bizarre backwards understanding of how to write a power fantasy character? These are the type of stuff reserved for fanfics, not big budget movies. Do they honestly not understand how to write a relatable but strong power fantasy lead? It is extremely puzzling. @LTNetjak The original Mulan was an epic story about an ordinary person who did something extraordinary: Save the country of China. And in the end, she brings honor not just her country and family, but to herself, vindicating her self-worth. Also, along the way, she meets friends and overcomes obstacles which make her stronger in the process. Also, Mushu is awesome and Eddie Murphy is a treasure. The remake basically strip all that away to tell a retelling that will be forgotten in a few days.
@LTNetjak exactly. The original is neatly written and ince the start shows Mulan's strenghts: from the chickens scene to she trying to fix the matchmaker disaster on the fly we know Mulan is a witty and dynamic character and she keep it like this until the very end but with the difference that not only she accepts it as qualities and not flaws but the people around her also do. One of my favorite parts in the palace battle is when her squad put the fabrics around the poles to climb exactly like she did at the camp, a quick callback very effective in showing how her impact goes beyond just "being a warrior, bringing honor".
Precisely, Mulan was always a role model to me, as she showed me that girls could be anything that they put their mind to, and not what mainstream society plans for them to be. This movie seems to preach, "Yes, you can succeed, but only if you have incredible superpowers!" 🤦🏻♀️

There’s only one “Chosen One” Story I like and that’s Anakin Skywalker’s story. I don’t like chosen one plots much because it conflicts with the concept of free-will as the main problem but I do like Anakin’s Chosen one story a bit more than the others because of how sick and twisted it is compared to everything else. It’s an INVERSION of the trope. Anakin is fated to kill off all the Sith and bring balance to the force but in order for him to do that, he himself has to become a Sith and kill himself along side palpatine. It’s not just that he has to kill Sidious, he has to kill himself as well because he is the ultimate villain and hero of the story in a crazy fucked up way. I like that because it’s so twisted, morbid, and something you would never expect for the main character whose “supposed” to be a hero but has to deliberately fall from grace to make it happen but it’s fascinating because of it. Most chosen one plots have a happy ending with the hero doing something great and heroic, gets the girl, get married, and live a happily ever after, but for Anakin, he has to be desperate enough to become evil, lose everything he loves and become depressed, become a genocidal tyrant who has all the power he wants in the galaxy but nothing he needs, and do a whole a bunch of evil actions like mass murder instill the right moment for him to complete the prophecy where he and his master has to die by killing himself and sidious. Imagine a prophecy where you have to kill yourself after doing evil things at the right time to be claimed the hero? That’s crazy to me and I love it for it. I really like dark and twisted versions of things
There is a lot objectively wrong here and people pointed out that that the Film-Making is beneath Amateur-Level. Things like Camera-Use and many whole 'fields' of technic-stuff. I'm sorry, but this time i have to call out this UA-camr to be quite uninformed and uneducated about this.
I'll take that Anakin example one step further: the prophecy said he would restore balance to the Force. Not destroy the Sith, not lead the Jedi to victory. Restore balance. Now, I don't believe that the Jedi have to be destroyed for there to be balance -- nor do I think they have to be counterbalanced by the Sith, locked in this twisted cycle of mutual destruction. But. I do think that the Jedi Order had fallen out of balance, and that Anakin's destroying (and therefore restarting) it was also part of the prophecy. The Jedi were just so sure they were the good guys they never took a closer look at how that prophecy might play out for them.

You know the Kitchen theme gives me a great idea, a movie about a woman who actually wants to be a great chef but is told her whole life she should never go in the kitchen because she needs to be an astronaut, but she's drawn to the kitchen and is forced by circumstances to make some amazing meals and realizes she has a talent and then... well so on and so forth...
"She's physically unlike everyone else, it's a problem that wasn't explored in the original movie" that's false, there's a whole scene with Mulan bathing naked in the lake and the other soldiers coming in and jumping naked in the water as well.
Also when the general enters the medical tent and discovers Mulan is a woman and nearly executes her, also when Mulan struggles physically at the beginning and has to try even harder than the other soldiers
@@hareecionelson5875 yeah in the animated movie she does not have super powers, she has cleverness at best so she does have to work harder to be on the level. But nooo let's pretend an everage woman are as strong as an average man.
The "woman proves that being who she is makes her powerful" already exists. In the original Mulan. Literally, that's the whole theme of that movie. Everyone has immense power when they be who they are, rather than what society dictates they be. This even extends to the males in the cast. Why did they need to remake nearly every aspect of a very effective and beloved movie? Mulan is my favorite disney movie. I will always watch it. But after messing up the lessons the original Aladdin taught us with the live action remake (lying is wrong, and being who you are is the important thing versus women need to be in charge because they're smarter), I had no desire to see how they'd muck up an ACTUAL inspirational "female empowerment" movie that had been carefully crafted to be subtle and heartwarming. Hollywood doesn't do "live action" anything as SUBTLE. Cartoons do "subtle" because they can and they actually have artists on board. Live action doesn't do subtle because... they think their audiences are stupid.
Stop crying like a baby... The problem with the movie isn't the fact that mushu is not there. The problem is that all the other characters don't have personality nor did mulan..only the witch has personality
This is about the nicest possible way to say that a movie sucks. This movie sucks. Anybody who spent $30 on this film got completely robbed of their hard-earned cash. Disney ought to be ashamed of themselves!
WOW DISNEY IS BOLD. They had Ming-Na Wen (the original voice actress for Mulan) to basically "lead" this new Mulan to the Emperor/audience and basically "make way" for her. The AUDACITY! At 5:00
The original Mulan was story so inspiring and authentic, there is soul to the protagonist and it's really relatable to all audiences women in particular, the animated movie progresses in an organic way that we became a part of as the viewer. The new Mulan is just a point down ,cropped version of Crouching tiger hidden dragon, which is an actual insult to that movie too
They should have just made it like the original legend. She goes through the whole war without blowing her cover, then she chooses to go home instead of accepting a high-ranking position, and a long time later her war buddies come to visit her home and only there do they realize she was a ctually a woman.
I think the first point was unfair. Saying that the emperor was anti women without establishing it caused the movie to be unbelievable is false. The orginal mulan also did not establish it but it turned out great. China being anti-women during the Forbidden City era was historically correct. It was similar to Joan of Arc, it was a product of those times, its not something that needed to be established because it was already common knowledge. The core problem was more to pacing. There were no time to fully sit in with the character, everything was hectic. Take for example the wedding arrangement moment where Mulan was deemed not marriage material. In the orginal cartoon, they have the Reflection song to help convey the feeling of grief, lost and confusion, but in the remake, they went straight away with the conscription, giving no space for us to sympathize with Mulan
I agree. Same goes for Filmento's point that such a storyline is not realistic in 2020. That is not true because there are many countries even today where women are treated as second class citizens. For example, Saudi Arabia lifted the ban on women driving and getting licenses less than 3 years ago.
The whole point of woman not being used as soldiers etc is very logical at that time. This is set during the time when life expectancy for children is very low, having more children is the sure way to add more manpower in your family, family needs much more tasks need to be done, very different job requirement and risks, etc being housewife is much more important and logical compared to now. While some people might genuinely believe the illogical reasoning behind no women as soldiers etc I think for the society of that time traditional family role for female is not something that needs a personal motive. Of course, Wulan could simply prove herself that her worth as a soldier is just much more significant compared to if she just stay as a housewife (or she just can simply prove nothing other than just doing what she have to do). You can simply showcase female empowerment just by being logical for that time rather than using the logic of society in current decade or two.
@Mr. Xray Selective abortions is ILLEGAL, only done by ignorant peasants, while "Leftover women" means urban women with high income and pride not willing to marry men with lower social status than them, it is about independent women with power, it's an exact opposite thing! Don't throw around random fake knowledge everywhere when you have no idea know what you're talking about
I agree, the problem is the pacing. As I watch it, I find that Mulan strength is how she took her choices, how she choose what other doesn't. Like when her fellow soldier retreat in pursuing bory khan but she didn't. When she realized the clue the witch gave her, the movie failed to emphasize that but her wits is the one that makes her strive, not merely her strength.
The point with the showers also seemed unfair. Since he didn't seem to think it was realistic for Mulan to actually be in danger if she was found out, he's presenting it as if having men see her body was a socially awkward situation that they were all going to have to learn how to cope with. It was a life or death situation that she had to get out of. Having her volunteer for guard duty doesn't feel like the movie avoided exploring how they would deal with an uncomfortable situation. It feels like she narrowly dodged a bullet. Wow, that's the first thing I've said in defense of anything related to this movie. It definitely deserves criticism. Let's just make sure it's being criticized for the right things.
Man, they MURDERED Mulan's character arc in this. Because for some reason, they felt they had to make her a strong female protagonist in a different way than the original, they overshot the mark completely and made her completely flawless from the beginning. So she can't HAVE a character arc anymore. You can make strong females that are flawed, disney!
The main problem with all these so called "Women empowerment" movies is that their message is not the a woman can be anything, its that a woman can be everything. A woman can be the smartest, fastest, strongest and basically perfect in every way usually just because she is a woman. She doesn't have to train, she doesn't have to study, she has no flaws, unless that flaw is like this Mulan in that she isn't showing how great she really is, and everyone else around her is just there to clap and be in awe of her. That's not only a wrong message to send its actually a very dangerous one.
Honestly? YES. Good point-it puts a really high standard of “you are only a good example of a woman IF you are perfect, and flawless.” Too much pressure LOL. Give me female protagonists who means well and works hard but fails in so many ways.
It's also sad that their idea of an empowered woman is one that beats men at being men, essentially saying that the only way a woman can be empowered is by trying to be like a man , as if men are superior. Seems like veiled mysoginy
"My family loved" thats Disney intention, to make family movies that dont need to be good, just need to bring parents and the children to give the money
Adding to my previous comment, having just seen what I commented on this video, my fiance just added this little gem: "I genuinely feel sorry for any woman that needs Disney to tell them they can be a real person." There you have it folks.
I find it hilarious that there was no Mushu "for realism", all the while having a WITCH that can morph into multiple animals, and a damn phoenix. Realistic indeed.
That part really bothers did they ever explain why they changed their mind without telling anyone and instead of going realistic they went full on superhero paranormal?

Another thing is dragons in chinese culture are more connected with masculine ideas. So by having a male ancestors in a dragons body not only endorse but actively support her being herself, encouraging her to find creative solutions to her problems for herself would have been a pretty powerful narrative device.
"Competent"? We talking about the same movie where all of the peasant families and fighting warriors always have pristine, freshly ironed costumes? The one where Mulan magically gets clean when she decides to let down her hair and fly gloriously into battle? Where nearly every piece of CGI fails to look convincing? Where the combat choreography doesn't hold a candle to actual Chinese action movies and the editing makes it even worse? I mean, just look at that spider at 14:30. That look real to you? Then what about the flying teacups? Mulan literally just filled them with tea but they're miraculously empty when they're flung up. The teapot smashes to reveal nothing inside , and nothing splashes out in the beginning either. The whole film is riddled with narrative and production errors like this. I can't buy the argument that anything about Mulan was competently done (Maybe Donnie Yen and the guy who plays her father, but that's it).
One of my biggest peeves with this movie is that they managed to have enough money to get both Donnie Yen and Jet Li and the most martial arts we get is like a 10-second scene in the whole movie -_-

Mulan isn't only a cartoon Disney film. The cartoon was based on a historical Chinese ballad. The original cartoon ironically is closer to the theme and intention of the ballad and far more intelligently adapted than the live action.
Re: potential Mulan plot twists. You can't make an Emperor the bad guy in any movie intended for China. For whatever cultural reasons, Emperors are always portrayed as being good and just.
I'm pretty sure that's just culturally expected...The Emperor is supposed to be the "Chosen of Heaven" and therefore infallible. If you take an Empress like Wu Zetian, who was purportedly a benevolent empress who did well by anyone who assisted her in taking power and supporting her, and absolutely WRECKED anyone who even thought of standing against her, I reckon that's the closest you'll get?
Because even though the CPC doesn't want to say it out loud, they want the citizenry to believe they have the Mandate of Heaven, at least figuratively. They do not want to allow real questions about central authority.
but having an evil emperor wouldn't work (sexist yes, evil no). Why would he want to let the mongols take his country? It just wouldn't make sense. Having general infiltrate the army and then cause havoc would be better.
holy crap that comparison at 15:10 to 15:33 is gold. The animation is way more epic. The music; the long, panning shot of the massive army, their roars are more powerful even from a greater distance, the angles used are so much more dynamic. what the frig! wow! good call with that one.
And then note that it's Mulan's actions that cause the avalanche in the original compared to the other soldier's actions that cause the avalanche in the remake.
When I saw the trailer my immediate reaction was “oh great another one 🙄” it’s like Disney can’t do anything original anymore. Enough with the remakes already!
That's stupid. How does a powerful witch feel worthless around normal humans? She's a skilled fighter with all types of magic and shapeshifting powers at her disposal.
And logically speaking people wouldn't look at a shapeshifting witch who can take down people twice her size using literal magic and go "reeeee powerful woman bad!" They'd go "alright how do I get this person to NOT fuck the rest of my life up."
Instead of spending my money of this crap, I watch the 2009 Mulan and she starts off skilled, but not superhuman. She has actual struggles because of her sudden sacrifice to save her father, somewhere along the line she’s drinking her sorrows away. I recommend it and it’s free on UA-cam. Mulan: Rise of a warrior
I am still confused, the catapult can aim perfectly at the soldiers, however when aiming at Mulan it missed by a mile. She even get to looked at the fiery rock flying far far over her like a meteor.
That’s correct and it was still cheaper than going to the theater and we watched it twice already and I can go watch it right now if I want to. Much better value.
I was hopeful, the animated Mulan is one of my favorites of all time, but this new Mulan is other thing. It's awkward and I wouldn't show it to my kids.
I mean they could've been safe and a lot better than this. The witch could've been the actual bad guy and the khan dude just her puppet, they could've gotten rid of the chi and had her use craftiness to be as good as the men. Have her prove that a woman can be as good as men without her just being better at being a man but show the virtue's a woman can bring. They could've added depth by having the commander feel despair as the soldiers are under preforming only for Mulans cleverness inspire the others to do things differently until they're the best group in the company. All of these would be safe but far less boring

This is the part that baffles me the most about the failed attempts at female empowerment. Regardless of gender, if you look at any good empowerment story, the main character pretty much exclusively has humble beginnings. If they don't, then they have gaping flaws and obstacles that they survive by an inch. They are also usually accompanied by a supporting cast that they couldn't have survived without. Even in the dreaded "chosen one" stories, like Harry Potter or Star Wars, the characters are initially pathetic and constantly get bailed out by others. More hardcore power fantasy characters such as Indiana Jones or James Bond, will usually go through torturous trials and will reach an ultimate low before ever ascending to their OP "power fantasy" status. But these so called "female empowerment" stories purposefully and strategically avoid all of these. To me this screams of committee thinking, because I don't think any writer worth their salt would approve of such blatantly flawed story telling. It's a classic amateur fanfic mistake to load your protagonist with awesomeness and forgetting to humanize them.
There is literally zero character development in 2020 Mulan. She doesn’t have to struggle to achieve her goals, she doesn’t have to work hard to become a good fighter. She already has flawless skills thanks to conveniently having magical powers that allow her to kick all the butt she wants with zero effort or struggle. She starts at point A and ends at point A. She also has no personality to speak of besides her powers. You could cast a magical cardboard box in her place and you would get the same viewing experience. The 1998 Mulan will always be one of my favorite Disney characters ever. She was interesting, likeable, and had funny/awkward moments. She started out at a significant disadvantage compared to the men in camp, and there were several moments of failure before she worked her way to success. One of the most inspiring parts of the movie is when you see her sitting on the top of the pole as the sun rises, because you’ve just seen how much she struggled previously and how much work she had to put in to prove herself. So basically, take away everything good from the 1998 version and you get this movie. “Meh” is probably being generous.
You can do anything a man can do, as long as you have fictional superpowers that is!"
This is supposed to be empowering?
One of the things I "like" about this version is that there are no songs. You know, because that makes it more faithful to the BALLAD (I.e, a musical). Not only that, there's a witch as well. A concept that's completely foreign to the Eastern audiences. They could've written her as a spirit or an oni, but instead is written as a bird witch that wants to be accepted by society. And this is supposed to be more realistic than the animated version..?
So is a Mulan 2020 episode in the works?
The newer model of Mulan might be closer to what China wants to show its audience.

The best one liner I've heard to describe this movie is, they turned Mulan into a Chinese Elsa.

Mulan gives the only message that being a regular person sucks. You have to be "The" chosen one who can do any things without even having any Special powers.

Exactly. I am disappointed this wasn't mentioned in the video. Once you give the protagonist magical powers, it becomes much less interesting watching to see if she will fail or succeed when confronted with challenging tasks.
@@jrd33 Right? Even Harry Potter would have died without his friends and he was the Chosen One.

That’s why “kill bill” is such an awesome movie. She needs to push through shit.
Aye!
They have reversed most of the values and ideas the original Mulan depicted:
- comradeship has been replaced, current Mulan is just an IndEpEndent, StrOnK and BrAvE wOmaN
- her strongest trait was her brain and she always outsmarted her opponents, she was physically the weakest of the band (and it's alright, it's called a FLAW), not a goddess with super cheat powers
- she struggled during the various exercises given during the training, not in this movie since again she's flawless and invincible

Courage Under Fire is a good movie about a strong woman in a military role traditionally reserved for men.
@@sjbrooksy45 @Александра Шелехова I'll give them a watch! thanks

10:03 except the “shower scene” concept WAS explored in the original film. There was a scene where all the guys were bathing and told Mulan to join them, not knowing her true gender.
I was going to write that.
"There's a couple things I know they're bound to notice." - Mushu
A young woman who loves and respects the most important man in her life?
Oh my God, the internalised misogyny!!

Every Disney Princess has to have superpowers now. Because being normal is for suckers.
Same thing with Star Wars. What is this bizarre backwards understanding of how to write a power fantasy character? These are the type of stuff reserved for fanfics, not big budget movies. Do they honestly not understand how to write a relatable but strong power fantasy lead? It is extremely puzzling. Ironically, these movies appear more sexist to me, because it tells me that the people in charge are unable to sympathize with a woman in any way. That's the only explanation I have for such big budget movies to have unrelatable main leads.
@@Mick0Mania The New Message of female empowerment is: "If you're one of 2 super powered women, you're golden and can do everything! If you're not, you're Mulan's little sister (original ballad: Older Sister, Younger Brother) and should be happy if you get married and have children!"

Mulan 2020 is an insult and a disaster.
Thos movie is an insult to both the animated movie and the original poem this was supposed to be based upon

I wouldn't mind much if they gave it a different name so that it wouldn't pop up when I search for the original movies.
Nah, the animated Mulan was a simple story, it's strange to see people make the originals out to be masterpieces. The problem with this movie was they just had to stuff in modern feminist bullshit. Girl with superpowers told to suppress her powers because n reason. Girl cannot fight like man can, girl can only do xyz. Where have we seen that movie before? That's right, almost every fucking movie from Hollywood with a female lead.
I disagree with people saying that you shouldn't compare the original ones to the Live Action for this reason, IT'S CALLED THE SAME AMD IT'S MEANT TO BE THE SAME MOVIE, you cannot just act as if the reboot has nothing to do with the animated one.
@@thecod2345 Not possible, Well-rounded and realistic female heroes like Ellen Ripley from the alien franchise are no longer possible, female heroes now have to defeat the villain by "showing their true Strength" and "Unlocking Their Potential" and never outwitting or outsmarting or outmanoeuvring.

That sounds way more compelling.
No wonder it's so shit. They made a movie that's a reboot of a reboot.
Honestly, that would have been better
That's not only a wrong message to send its actually a very dangerous one.
hello every movie ever from now on
Hence why every one of these movies has a Mary Sue main character.
Honestly? YES. Good point-it puts a really high standard of “you are only a good example of a woman IF you are perfect, and flawless.”
Too much pressure LOL. Give me female protagonists who means well and works hard but fails in so many ways.
So.. basically she's Jesus 😅
It's also sad that their idea of an empowered woman is one that beats men at being men, essentially saying that the only way a woman can be empowered is by trying to be like a man , as if men are superior. Seems like veiled mysoginy
They did kinda explore the whole not physically being like men in the original film with the bathing in the river scene.
