Better idea for a Tom and Jerry movie plot: Tom is owned by a rich snobby couple going on a vacation to the Bahamas in a private jet. Unknown to them however, Jerry stows away on the plane and pisses off Tom. This leads to the two getting into a chaotic scrap that eventually leaves them stranded in the middle of the ocean. With no sense of direction, the two are forced to choose between beating the shit out of each other because of the parts they played in getting them stranded, and working together to survive and get back to their home. Thus begins a wacky cross-country film about the two getting into mischief, meeting a variety of quirky side characters Mr. Bean’s Vacation style, and eventually deciding that being on the run and meeting new people is better than being restrained by snobby assholes. Simple plot, minimal need for dialogue from the main two, plenty of environments that can provide more unique setpieces, and side characters that are kept at a healthy enough distance to avoid taking up screen time while still spicing things up so it isn’t an endless barrage of slapstick for an hour and a half.
I was expecting this to be honest. Why doesn't Hollywood get it through their heads that we want 2d animated movies? This is why anime is profiting so well, there's barely an competition in the West.

Like, my three year old sister watches Ponyo and Spirited Away ten times as much as Minions. But the thing about Spirited Away is that she actually remembers the plot for it where as for the Minions movies, all she remembers is "smol banana boys talk funnie". Studio Ghibli treats kid movies like pieces of art, which it is. They don't explain everything to the audience and keep the kids attention through beautiful animation and interesting and colorful characters, not stupid cringe poop jokes we've seen thousands of times and have never been funny. They actually support creativity and allow kids to think instead of force feeding the plot to them.

There was a video essay that explains why the animated segments don't land. It boils down to the fact that the original shorts were incredibly creative with their scripts, but the movie just has Tom chasing Jerry and little else.
the original movie from the 90's is more notable as it attempts to do smething the original cartoons wouldn't touch upon: 1) have tom and jerry talk for the first time and 2) have the pair actually become friends. Sure it may not be good, but I feel a movie version of a cartoon or tv show has to do something unexplored in the original to justify its existence, otherwise it's JUST a movie-length episode of that thing.
1) Tom and Jerry talked before. It wasn't the first time. My personal favorite line Tom said was in the million dollar cat where he says "I'm throwing away a MILLION dollars- but I'M HAPPY" 2) They've been friends in a few episodes of the old cartoons- both from the beginning of the episode, and developing a friendship at the end. Honestly the 90's movie was only good for the memes. The two "big things" the 90's movie touched on weren't "Big things".
What the 90's movie did have was good animation and an incredible musical score. The songs are so catchy, they started playing in my head as soon as read this comment. I would put the film in what I call "the bedtime movie" category. It's the kind of movie you put on when you're trying to wind down before bed, so you want something aesthetically pleasing without having to be too invested in the plot.
If you want an example of how much the writers seemingly cared more about the humans than Tom & Jerry themselves, here are some of the things that weren’t in the script that the director himself added to stay true to the cartoons: -Tom meeting Spike -Tom meeting Butch and The Alleycat gang in the alley BEFORE meeting them at the going prison -The animal tornado Now, apparently one of the writers had a ten minute house destruction opening sequence planned in the script. That part in the trailer where Tom and Jerry are at the bus WAS actually part of that ten minute opening. First off, WHY THE HELL WAS THAT CUT?! Like I get you have to establish the world of the movie somehow so people get what you’re trying to do, but between that and the rapping pigeons the former would’ve been SO much more fitting for a Tom and Jerry movie. Secondly, with that knowledge known, I still don’t think it would’ve changed much because the movie ultimately still would not be about Tom and Jerry.

My brother, who's disabled, went with his personal assistant to see this movie in theaters. My bro didn't care for the human parts, if not hated it XD He's really good in movie theaters and when it gets to Tom and Jerry bits he had a lot more fun. Even the pa was like "yeah this movie was boring until Tom and Jerry came on". It was hilarious since my bro is a huge Tom and Jerry fan and I was expecting for him to like this movie XD Though he has taste in movies so it's possible for him to not like the movie XD (he loves Mad Max: Fury Road, it's one of the few R-rated movies he'll get excited over. Super adorable to watch with him)

This film should have been about Tom and Jerry both wanting to be in the hotel (for their own separate reasons) so they end up competing and completely causing chaos for the people inside. The pair could then settle their differences and both go their own ways or agree to live together in the hotel. It seems we got half of the story we should have got
Wall-e handled this a million times better. Even with the humans, the movie made it very clear that Wall-e and Eve were the integral characters and we understand and enjoy everything about them and what they go through, even if they don’t talk.
Wall-e is my favorite Pixar movie. The way it delivers exposition is great. Wall-e and EVE are well done characters who don't need to say much for the audience to understand them. Wall-e is curios and lonely. EVE is serious and has a short temper.
I've always loved Rebeltaxi's Idea of Tom & Jerry x John Wick. It sounds stupid, but people watch John Wick and Tom & Jerry for the same reasons, the action. A loosely made story to thread all the action/slapstick scenes together. "All the cats are after Tom for accidently runing the Cat Bazaar, and flag Jerry as an accomplice. Now they must survive from 8PM until 5AM when the assassin guild opens up to clear their name."
I'm pretty sure Jerry has always been an asshole mouse invading a house, and Tom is usually the cat that's just trying to defend the house from a vermin like Jerry. The dynamic of helpless small animal being bothered by a cat just trying to eat it would be Tweety and Slyvester. It's why I don't like Tom and Jerry. Tom barely deserves the violence given to him.
I’ve been seeing people say that the original creator of Tom and Jerry said they were friends pretending to battle one another so Tom doesn’t get kicked out of the house, but it doesn’t seem that at all. Why is Jerry pissing of Tom or getting him in trouble? Why does Tom constantly want to eat Jerry? They seem more toxic than “friendly” which sucks b/c I love the idea of them being pretend enemies.
I would say that the relationship ship of them are like frenemies. They wanna tease murder and kill each other while other times just hanging out and helping each other. I personally read something that the one of the members of creating tom and Jerry I think a staff (not sure who) said: "The show can be a duo that are equals, there is no no bad guy nor even good guy, So It's just about a two animals that mess around with each other causing chaous and just living there lives" I believe I read this on wiki about their characters again it's all blurry to me but that's what I remembered. Edit: For short I think they both have evil in them. They both have times that they are bad guys.
They’re both equally antagonistic. Even when Tom is actively attacking Jerry it’s more so just to Torture him rather then get him out or eat him for survival.
This movie had the same problems as the Godzilla 2014 movie. Spending too much time on the humans that we don’t give a crap about. We don’t want to watch humans and their boring selves. We want to see Tom and Jerry fighting! Like they are known to do!
To be fair that Godzilla movie was about how all the destruction and damage Godzilla did wich if you don't know Godzilla is based on the nukes America sent to Japan it was actually an ok movie for me but you are right most people just want to see big lizard and Tom and Jerry beating the hell out of each other but everything else I agree with.
i'd say one big difference between the japanese movies and kom vs 2014 and, ugh, 98, is that the former atleast try to make the human characters someone you might actually care about in the context, people who can have relevant interactions with what we're here for, whereas the latter was just... why are we focusing on these people? ...of course, this is all excluding the one or two movies *coughrevengecough* that had kennies. of course, the 2014 movie was still pretty decent in spite of that.
Interestingly, we tried watching this with my nieces (ages ranging 5-8) during dinner. They did NOT like it. They kept asking where was Tom and Jerry? Why are we following these grown ups! Im sure plenty of kids are enjoying the movie, maybe my nieces are just little baby movie snobs (which I'm so proud of XD), but I feel even kids know when something is not quite right. Kids do have big imaginations and they can feel when a piece of media is quite reaching that expectation, even if they can't always quite put it into words how it isn't meeting the expectation.
You know the part where the wedding is ruined and Kayla gets fired? It's meant to be the saddest scene in the movie, but considering she committed fraud to get her way, it felt more like karma.

The original Tom and Jerry movie will always be a classic to me it had great character development, an actual plot, creative villains, we got to actually know Tom and Jerry, had some catchy music, and was an actual movie not to mention it was animated and not live action
We put them into a musical. That didn't work. We put them into others movies. That didn't work. We made an original live action animated hybrid movie, and it still didn't work. How can we make Tom and Jerry work on the big screen?

I watched a separate video about this movie and they mentioned how a lot of the "Tom and Jerry chasing" scenes in this movie didn't work because it was just the two running around the environment and destroying stuff uninterrupted to trendy-sounding hip-hop music, whereas in the original cartoons, there was good pacing and timing and stuff other than just the two breaking one thing after another as the cat tries and fails to catch the mouse and that's it, which i just thought was a good point to bring up as well.

Considering all the modern iterations of Tom and Jerry have just been Tom and Jerry walking around in the background of classic movies with no rhyme or reason, this live action movie is surprisingly consistent with their brand.
It sucks when they dont turn out cause the idea in the first place is so good. When they do good though they are memorable. Christopher Robin and Detective PIkachu come to mind. THEY WERE REALLY GOOD

I don’t agree. The problem isn’t the target audience. The problem is the mindset studios have when making kids movies. Many Hollywood studios think they just have to throw in some fart jokes and pop culture references to make a good kids movie, but that’s simply not the case. Making kids movies are, in a way, harder than making films for adults due to having a younger audience with less knowledge on certain things. You need it to be well-written with a great story for it to be a good kids movie. If children’s books can exist, kids movies can.
Even if the human parts aren't really that good , all that truly matters to me is that they got the character of Tom and jerry right (which was done much better than some other adaptations).
Honestly, if Warner Bros wants to bring Tom and Jerry back into the mainstream, they should just make new shorts and put them in front of their films. Heck, they kind of did that on HBO Max

A lot of movies need to focus more on what the movie is about, or literally named, on the human characters. An example is Godzilla. Everyone wants to see the spicy iguana fight things, but it focuses on the human subplot instead

Space Jam was regarded as a giant 'meh' when it was released. As a kid, I thought it was.. alright. Nothing fantastic, but alright. Now, for some reason, it seems to be regarded as some sort of classic. And I completely missed when that shift in view on the film came about. Not that my view would change, but whatever.
The only things I remember about this movie are the dead mouse chalk outline at the beginning and Jerry looking offended when he's told that Tom thinks he's emotionally unavailable. I don't know why that makes me laugh but it just does. 🤣
Yeah I was so mad when I covered this on the podcast I cohost. I was so mad about how much screentime the humans took. I even watched it a second time to count how much time in total, the duo was on screen and it was essentially 37 mins of the entire 101 min runtime they were on-screen either together or by themselves. Every actor there looked like they didn't want to be there.
I forgot how much I was routing against the protagonist for most of the movie. The fact that the antagonist was correct for most of the movie certainly made for an *interesting* dynamic.
When the first trailer came out it gave me the impression that this movie was gonna break the mold/curse that plagued a lot of these live action adaptions of old cartoons that Hollywood has cooked up for years, similar to how the 2020 Sonic movie was finally the one movie to finally show that video game movies work IF you get it done the right way. Kept getting my hopes up higher and higher with each new clip and TV spot, when I finally saw it in theaters did the movie accomplished that? Eh... I really really want to say that it did, granted this is better than the 1992 animated one that never should've existed, the slapstick is on point to the original cartoons, Tom and Jerry themselves don't speak at all, and overall the idea of a hotel makes for the perfect playground for the cat and mouse, imagine al of the stuff in there they could wreck duo to their constant fighting, it's perfect. But then I see all of these reviews, and the 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes and I can't help but to feel heartbroken and feel like I've been betrayed by something which could've been fun and amazing, but in the end it showed glimpses of that, but it wasn't enough... But I will make this very clear, this is WAY more tolerable and enjoyable than the Smurfs movies, Yogi Bear 2010, the 2004 Garfield disaster, and everything else that would take way too long for me to name. Tom and Jerry 2021, you may not be perfect, but at least you had your moments that I enjoyed seeing.

Why isn't there more Tom and Jerry? Because these types of live action/animated hybrids focus on the humans to save money. Even the live action Sonic movie did that; it's just that focusing on Dr. Robotnik/Eggman worked better because he was the villain, so it wasn't as bad. But they _all_ follow the same formula: take cartoon characters, pluck them from their world and put them in New York City, focus on the humans, put in references to the original only when necessary for the sake of nostalgia baiting (to its credit, it looks like Tom and Jerry didn't do this), have a road trip/driving scenes, and treat the cartoon characters as a "pet" of the humans. It's a formula Hollywood repeats because it brings in money.

It's ironic to say, but Willie's Wonderland did the whole silent protagonist really damn well, same for this other horror film about a deaf woman who was also a writer trying to keep herself alive from a home invader. Both had silent protagonists, but also had it where the visuals did the talking for them in more ways then one.
the funny thing about Tom and Jerry movies now a days: they can be hit and misses. for every Robin Hood movie, there's a Willy Wonka movie. just because Tom and Jerry are at their best doesn't mean the film has a good plot, characters or humor. seriously, i was just bring it up for an example, but if you want a good movie from the duo look up that Robin Hood one. it's really good.
That vindicating moment for fans when the Sonic movie is one of the best animation live-action hybrid... Second only to the Paddington films of course! Those are genuinely some of my favorite movies and I think the second on is a rare but deservedly perfect film. I love it so much.

Jerry being horrible to Tom has honestly been a problem for a really long time like I can remember that being an issue and I'm old enough that original Simpsons was my childhood. Thinking about a more even older cartoons had a problem with that, which sucked and is prob part of why I've always liked Tom more.

If I was to make a guess. It would be the cost of doing the live-action "Tom & Jerry" parts started to add up. So someone who wanted to keep their job decided to give more of the people who were already getting paid I assume really well to be the background. Since better to have a cheaper flop, that makes money, than a very expensive success that loses money. Just makes me mad that things like this and the Smurfs movie are going to hold up things that could actually be good using the same tech.

I keep on thinking of Bealistock and Blume in stuff like this: What is the business AROUND the movie. The actors? Trying to run out contract obligations. The animators? tax write off for the computers. The IP? Saves money on advertising and renews the copyright for another 70 years. The Script? If you are paid by the hour, they hire you for a week. If you are paid by the word, the make the dialogue chunky. The producers? "Please, put Tim on that kid's movie so he does not badger me into adding dog shit jokes around Superman".
Just wait a few weeks or months until someone posts a video on UA-cam titled “Tom and Jerry Movie, but only scenes with Tom and Jerry”. You’ll get a decent few minutes of entertainment and not have to spend a dime.
My biggest problem with modern Tom and Jerry is that they always forgot one thing. In old cartoons Tom is genuine threat to Jerry. Yes most of the time he lose in the end but he can definitelly fight back. Today its always just Tom who is getting hit which is boring.

Now the public's preconcieved notions about 2d animated films don't matter because now kids can just put them on without having to have their parents take them to the theater. Like, my three year old sister watches Ponyo and Spirited Away ten times as much as Minions. But the thing about Spirited Away is that she actually remembers the plot for it where as for the Minions movies, all she remembers is "smol banana boys talk funnie". Studio Ghibli treats kid movies like pieces of art, which it is. They don't explain everything to the audience and keep the kids attention through beautiful animation and interesting and colorful characters, not stupid cringe poop jokes we've seen thousands of times and have never been funny. They actually support creativity and allow kids to think instead of force feeding the plot to them.

It boils down to the fact that the original shorts were incredibly creative with their scripts, but the movie just has Tom chasing Jerry and little else.

the original movie from the 90's is more notable as it attempts to do smething the original cartoons wouldn't touch upon: 1) have tom and jerry talk for the first time and 2) have the pair actually become friends. Sure it may not be good, but I feel a movie version of a cartoon or tv show has to do something unexplored in the original to justify its existence, otherwise it's JUST a movie-length episode of that thing.

1) Tom and Jerry talked before. It wasn't the first time. My personal favorite line Tom said was in the million dollar cat where he says "I'm throwing away a MILLION dollars- but I'M HAPPY"
2) They've been friends in a few episodes of the old cartoons- both from the beginning of the episode, and developing a friendship at the end.
Honestly the 90's movie was only good for the memes. The two "big things" the 90's movie touched on weren't "Big things".
What the 90's movie did have was good animation and an incredible musical score. The songs are so catchy, they started playing in my head as soon as read this comment. I would put the film in what I call "the bedtime movie" category. It's the kind of movie you put on when you're trying to wind down before bed, so you want something aesthetically pleasing without having to be too invested in the plot.
If you want an example of how much the writers seemingly cared more about the humans than Tom & Jerry themselves, here are some of the things that weren’t in the script that the director himself added to stay true to the cartoons:
-Tom meeting Spike
-Tom meeting Butch and The Alleycat gang in the alley BEFORE meeting them at the going prison
-The animal tornado
Now, apparently one of the writers had a ten minute house destruction opening sequence planned in the script. That part in the trailer where Tom and Jerry are at the bus WAS actually part of that ten minute opening.
First off, WHY THE HELL WAS THAT CUT?! Like I get you have to establish the world of the movie somehow so people get what you’re trying to do, but between that and the rapping pigeons the former would’ve been SO much more fitting for a Tom and Jerry movie.
Secondly, with that knowledge known, I still don’t think it would’ve changed much because the movie ultimately still would not be about Tom and Jerry.
Yeah apparently they messed up the house and tom was kicked out while jerry had no more food, forcing them to make a truce. So yeah why was that cut?
They probably, unfortunately, cut it for length and to get to the “meat” of the movie.
It was cut because whilst they found it funny, it slowed the movie down to a grinding halt and people know the conflict of T&J already.

My brother, who's disabled, went with his personal assistant to see this movie in theaters. My bro didn't care for the human parts, if not hated it XD He's really good in movie theaters and when it gets to Tom and Jerry bits he had a lot more fun. Even the pa was like "yeah this movie was boring until Tom and Jerry came on". It was hilarious since my bro is a huge Tom and Jerry fan and I was expecting for him to like this movie XD Though he has taste in movies so it's possible for him to not like the movie XD (he loves Mad Max: Fury Road, it's one of the few R-rated movies he'll get excited over. Super adorable to watch with him)

This film should have been about Tom and Jerry both wanting to be in the hotel (for their own separate reasons) so they end up competing and completely causing chaos for the people inside. The pair could then settle their differences and both go their own ways or agree to live together in the hotel. It seems we got half of the story we should have got
The animation managed to be both adequate looking and cheap looking at the same time. It gives the movie a straight to video quality

Wall-e handled this a million times better. Even with the humans, the movie made it very clear that Wall-e and Eve were the integral characters and we understand and enjoy everything about them and what they go through, even if they don’t talk.
Wall-e is my favorite Pixar movie. The way it delivers exposition is great. Wall-e and EVE are well done characters who don't need to say much for the audience to understand them. Wall-e is curios and lonely. EVE is serious and has a short temper.

I've always loved Rebeltaxi's Idea of Tom & Jerry x John Wick. It sounds stupid, but people watch John Wick and Tom & Jerry for the same reasons, the action. A loosely made story to thread all the action/slapstick scenes together.
"All the cats are after Tom for accidently runing the Cat Bazaar, and flag Jerry as an accomplice. Now they must survive from 8PM until 5AM when the assassin guild opens up to clear their name."

I'm pretty sure Jerry has always been an asshole mouse invading a house, and Tom is usually the cat that's just trying to defend the house from a vermin like Jerry. The dynamic of helpless small animal being bothered by a cat just trying to eat it would be Tweety and Slyvester. It's why I don't like Tom and Jerry. Tom barely deserves the violence given to him.
I’ve been seeing people say that the original creator of Tom and Jerry said they were friends pretending to battle one another so Tom doesn’t get kicked out of the house, but it doesn’t seem that at all. Why is Jerry pissing of Tom or getting him in trouble? Why does Tom constantly want to eat Jerry? They seem more toxic than “friendly” which sucks b/c I love the idea of them being pretend enemies.
I would say that the relationship ship of them are like frenemies. They wanna tease murder and kill each other while other times just hanging out and helping each other.
I personally read something that the one of the members of creating tom and Jerry I think a staff (not sure who) said: "The show can be a duo that are equals, there is no no bad guy nor even good guy, So It's just about a two animals that mess around with each other causing chaous and just living there lives"
I believe I read this on wiki about their characters again it's all blurry to me but that's what I remembered.

This movie had the same problems as the Godzilla 2014 movie. Spending too much time on the humans that we don’t give a crap about. We don’t want to watch humans and their boring selves. We want to see Tom and Jerry fighting! Like they are known to do!

i'd say one big difference between the japanese movies and kom vs 2014 and, ugh, 98, is that the former atleast try to make the human characters someone you might actually care about in the context, people who can have relevant interactions with what we're here for, whereas the latter was just... why are we focusing on these people?

Interestingly, we tried watching this with my nieces (ages ranging 5-8) during dinner. They did NOT like it. They kept asking where was Tom and Jerry? Why are we following these grown ups!
Im sure plenty of kids are enjoying the movie, maybe my nieces are just little baby movie snobs (which I'm so proud of XD), but I feel even kids know when something is not quite right. Kids do have big imaginations and they can feel when a piece of media is quite reaching that expectation, even if they can't always quite put it into words how it isn't meeting the expectation.

I watched a separate video about this movie and they mentioned how a lot of the "Tom and Jerry chasing" scenes in this movie didn't work because it was just the two running around the environment and destroying stuff uninterrupted to trendy-sounding hip-hop music, whereas in the original cartoons, there was good pacing and timing and stuff other than just the two breaking one thing after another as the cat tries and fails to catch the mouse and that's it, which i just thought was a good point to bring up as well.

Plus Peanuts Movie followed the story of Charlie Brown having a crush on the Red Haired Girl and we actually SEE what she looks like. I remember the Peanuts tv show there was an episode where Charlie Brown had a crush on the red haired girl but we never saw her face.

Also, why did you name "The Peanuts Movie" when (at least from what I've read) Schulz absolutely despised that name?! In fact, two other titles that would've gone over better is "Better While I'm Dancin', Charlie-Brown" (calling back to the Meghan Trainor song for the film) or Good Ol' Charlie-Brown, a phrase used repeatedly in the comic''s lore and was even the last line of diologue for the film itself!
The peanuts movie was a very cute movie, and it's very faithful to the comics and the cartoons
Considering all the modern iterations of Tom and Jerry have just been Tom and Jerry walking around in the background of classic movies with no rhyme or reason, this live action movie is surprisingly consistent with their brand.
It sucks when they dont turn out cause the idea in the first place is so good. When they do good though they are memorable. Christopher Robin and Detective PIkachu come to mind. THEY WERE REALLY GOOD

The problem is the mindset studios have when making kids movies.
Many Hollywood studios think they just have to throw in some fart jokes and pop culture references to make a good kids movie, but that’s simply not the case.
Making kids movies are, in a way, harder than making films for adults due to having a younger audience with less knowledge on certain things.
You need it to be well-written with a great story for it to be a good kids movie.
If children’s books can exist, kids movies can.
Even if the human parts aren't really that good , all that truly matters to me is that they got the character of Tom and jerry right (which was done much better than some other adaptations).

1:00 whoa, hold up! Since when is Space Jam 'less well regarded'? That's a nostalgic classic for most of us 30somethings!
I guess she wasn't a basketball-playing 90's kid that watched Looney Tunes after a day at the park. Her relation to the movie is just, "sexy bunny girl bad".
Space Jam was regarded as a giant 'meh' when it was released. As a kid, I thought it was.. alright. Nothing fantastic, but alright.
Now, for some reason, it seems to be regarded as some sort of classic. And I completely missed when that shift in view on the film came about. Not that my view would change, but whatever.
The only things I remember about this movie are the dead mouse chalk outline at the beginning and Jerry looking offended when he's told that Tom thinks he's emotionally unavailable. I don't know why that makes me laugh but it just does. 🤣
Yeah I was so mad when I covered this on the podcast I cohost. I was so mad about how much screentime the humans took. I even watched it a second time to count how much time in total, the duo was on screen and it was essentially 37 mins of the entire 101 min runtime they were on-screen either together or by themselves. Every actor there looked like they didn't want to be there.
Especially with the script they were given and horrendous dialogue.

I forgot how much I was routing against the protagonist for most of the movie. The fact that the antagonist was correct for most of the movie certainly made for an *interesting* dynamic.
When the first trailer came out it gave me the impression that this movie was gonna break the mold/curse that plagued a lot of these live action adaptions of old cartoons that Hollywood has cooked up for years, similar to how the 2020 Sonic movie was finally the one movie to finally show that video game movies work IF you get it done the right way. Kept getting my hopes up higher and higher with each new clip and TV spot, when I finally saw it in theaters did the movie accomplished that? Eh... I really really want to say that it did, granted this is better than the 1992 animated one that never should've existed, the slapstick is on point to the original cartoons, Tom and Jerry themselves don't speak at all, and overall the idea of a hotel makes for the perfect playground for the cat and mouse, imagine al of the stuff in there they could wreck duo to their constant fighting, it's perfect. But then I see all of these reviews, and the 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes and I can't help but to feel heartbroken and feel like I've been betrayed by something which could've been fun and amazing, but in the end it showed glimpses of that, but it wasn't enough... But I will make this very clear, this is WAY more tolerable and enjoyable than the Smurfs movies, Yogi Bear 2010, the 2004 Garfield disaster, and everything else that would take way too long for me to name. Tom and Jerry 2021, you may not be perfect, but at least you had your moments that I enjoyed seeing.

To be fair, it seems like the people who made the movie did too.
Why isn't there more Tom and Jerry? Because these types of live action/animated hybrids focus on the humans to save money. Even the live action Sonic movie did that; it's just that focusing on Dr. Robotnik/Eggman worked better because he was the villain, so it wasn't as bad.
But they _all_ follow the same formula: take cartoon characters, pluck them from their world and put them in New York City, focus on the humans, put in references to the original only when necessary for the sake of nostalgia baiting (to its credit, it looks like Tom and Jerry didn't do this), have a road trip/driving scenes, and treat the cartoon characters as a "pet" of the humans. It's a formula Hollywood repeats because it brings in money.

Tom and Jerry doesn't even lend itself to a half hour show - the character interactions aren't complex enough. Not sure why anyone thought they could ever make a good movie out of it, painful medium mixing or not.

It's ironic to say, but Willie's Wonderland did the whole silent protagonist really damn well, same for this other horror film about a deaf woman who was also a writer trying to keep herself alive from a home invader. Both had silent protagonists, but also had it where the visuals did the talking for them in more ways then one.
the funny thing about Tom and Jerry movies now a days: they can be hit and misses. for every Robin Hood movie, there's a Willy Wonka movie. just because Tom and Jerry are at their best doesn't mean the film has a good plot, characters or humor.
seriously, i was just bring it up for an example, but if you want a good movie from the duo look up that Robin Hood one. it's really good.

Second only to the Paddington films of course! Those are genuinely some of my favorite movies and I think the second on is a rare but deservedly perfect film. I love it so much.

Well, as she said, it's pretty understandable to like the movie just for the Tom and Jerry parts since they are pretty good. It's just purely dependant on your tolerance of the live-action parts

Was I the only one that thought the animation looked unfinished? Like during the trailer I was like "the movie's not out yet, they're probably still touching it up." Nope.
Jerry being horrible to Tom has honestly been a problem for a really long time like I can remember that being an issue and I'm old enough that original Simpsons was my childhood. Thinking about a more even older cartoons had a problem with that, which sucked and is prob part of why I've always liked Tom more.
Well here's the thing, blaming the Simpsons for it is putting the cart in front of the horse... because Itchy and Scratchy is entirely an exaggerated parody of Tom and Jerry in the first place. I guess it's come full circle.

Oh God, why did you have to remind me about the Artemis Fowl abomination? They took one of my favorite book series as a child, literally gutted everything expect the names, and put in a ton of horribly written crap. It kills me every time I reminded.

If I was to make a guess. It would be the cost of doing the live-action "Tom & Jerry" parts started to add up. So someone who wanted to keep their job decided to give more of the people who were already getting paid I assume really well to be the background. Since better to have a cheaper flop, that makes money, than a very expensive success that loses money. Just makes me mad that things like this and the Smurfs movie are going to hold up things that could actually be good using the same tech.

The actors? Trying to run out contract obligations.
The animators? tax write off for the computers.
The IP? Saves money on advertising and renews the copyright for another 70 years.
The Script? If you are paid by the hour, they hire you for a week. If you are paid by the word, the make the dialogue chunky.
The producers? "Please, put Tim on that kid's movie so he does not badger me into adding dog shit jokes around Superman".

My biggest problem with modern Tom and Jerry is that they always forgot one thing. In old cartoons Tom is genuine threat to Jerry. Yes most of the time he lose in the end but he can definitelly fight back. Today its always just Tom who is getting hit which is boring.
