    As a kid in the 90s, Deep Space 9 and Next Gen taught me right from wrong. It's amazing how different it was back then, how you could actually learn morals from a TV show. The writing was at that level. Sometimes.

    I remember seeing Emissary for the first time, Jan 3, 1993. Sitting on the floor gazing at the huge (for the time) 25" screen being in awe of the Battle of Wolf 359. It was my favorite series immediately, a spot that no other series has been able to replace, though some are getting close.

      What are some of your runners-up? (I can’t say I have a single favorite series. But my circle of favorites, in the sense of things I rewatch over and over, includes DS9, VOY, TNG, the Golden Girls, Superstore, the Good Place, Heartstopper, Futurama, and Black Mirror. Other “favorites” are shows that I consider to be masterpieces, but which are not highly rewatchable, like Breaking Bad, Sense8, Orange is the New Black, and Orphan Black.)

      Yeah, the characters are really more relatable than what we see today in any series. Normal people haven't changed as much as what is portrayed in the present. I hope people in the 24th century will be more like the people in the 1990s than 2020s Hollywood 😂

  • @mbell420

    Really good retrospective on DS9. You nailed most of the messages of the show to a Tee.
    One correction tho. Bajor was not given to the Federation in the Peace treaty you mentioned. Hence Bajor and the surrounding space (wormhole) are not federation territory. Also the federation has no presence or control over the actual planet. The Federation is there at the invitation of the Bajoran government. Bajor does almost join the federation and that is the goal at the beginning of the series but they in the end choose not to.

    • @William-the-Guy
      @William-the-Guy Рік тому

      The chose not to at the time of an episode when they were about to do it. But in-show they remain interested in joining for the entire series. Didn't they finally join in the last episode? I know there's a book series set after the show where they joined.

    • @EvilTheOne
      @EvilTheOne 9 місяців тому +3

      Bajor does eventually join the Federation by series' end. Although during the run of the series, it is Sisko that stops them from joining the Federation. Sisko feels that if they are in the Federation, they are subject to Dominion attack, like any other Federation world. By keeping them neutral, the Bajoran were able to sign a non-aggression pact with the Dominion, that kept them out of the fighting.

    The treaty you're talking about happened the year after DS9 began and had nothing to do with Bajor. The Bajorans drove the Cardassians away themselves and then invited the Federation to run the station. Bajor never was Federation territory. That treaty didn't lead to the formation of the Marquis

    • @aldunlop4622
      @aldunlop4622 Рік тому +2

      The Marquis had nothing to do with Bajor, the Federation was at war with the Cardassians and a peace treaty resulted in a demilitarised zone between the two. The zone was arbitrarily decided, so settlements from both sides ended upon the wrong side of a stupid map. The Federation settlers refused to leave and started the Marquis. It was similar to the maps created in the Middle East after WW1 or when Pakistan was created from India.

      That’s exactly how it went for me. Almost any TNG or TOS episode is watchable without backstory. VOY almost so. Practically every DS9 episode demands that you have watched _and understood_ every prior episode. When I was young, when it was on its first run (and didn’t have a TV at home anyway for most of the 90s), I couldn’t get into it. As an adult, having watched it properly (on DVD or streaming, without commercials diverting focus), it became my hands-down favorite Trek.

    I really do not like the Maquis. They CHOSE to stay in Cardassian territory. I dont feel a ton of sympathy for the them or the Federation colonists as heartless as that sounds. They decided rather than leaving the homes they made to stop a war and prevent many more deaths, that theyd rather be under the rule of the literal Nazi Allegory. The Federation would have been able to move them elsewhere and probably at no cost.
    Also Jake Sisko was really boring I highly agree. My favorite episode of his was "The Visitor"
    DS9 is an awesome watch from start to finish despite its weird plots it sometimes has, like that one alien that was bred to be hunted and like it in season one, or that other Episode where they got kidnapped into a game thing.
    I dont think any other series has come close to it in Star Trek. Awesome video man

    DS9 Worf is way better than TNG Worf. TNG Worf gets bodied every episode to try and show how powerful and dangerous the enemy is. Don't get me wrong, that's not a wrong thing to do, showing your powerful character job to prove how dangerous this guy is. But when you do it week in and week out it just makes the audience think that guy isn't so powerful after all. Meanwhile, when DS9 Worf loses it's a big deal. He's fighting a never ending series or enemies, injuries are building up, and he's unwilling to stay down until he simply cannot take any more punishment. DS9 Worf is best Worf.

    Not sure I ever heard TNG being described as "wholesome" before ;)
    I would probably lean more to "idealistic" and "optimistic". Still, it's a bit of a trip to hear it called wholesome.
    Ultimately, the appeal of Trek up through TNG is that it indeed was very optimistic about Earth's future.
    NuTrek (and yes even to some degree DS9) seems mostly dedicated to depicting the future as just another version of humanity as a sewer, which is the most likely situation if we live that long.
    Well, DUH.
    I have no idea why people think they're geniuses or clever for taking a rate optimistic take on humanity's future and dumping all over it, but whatever.
    Actually I do of course. It may be a stretch to compare classic Trek to the Mona Lisa, all the modern Trek urge to sully it up is no more creative than smearing poop on that painting.

    I watched Ds9 during its original airing. The first two seasons were meh, but then the season 2 finale aired, and the Jem'Hadar was introduced. And then, when they blew up The Odyssey, a sister ship to the mighty Enterprise, I was intriguing. Cut to the season 3 premiere and they introduced The Defiant, and hooked. Finally, by the time season 4 premiered with "Way of the Warrior", and introduced Worf to the cast, I became fully addicted and never missed an episode on UPN.

That would be outrageous, and if that statement were true, then there would be Federation military forces on the surface of the Bajoran homeworld, but there absolutely is not.
    Federation officers manage and operate Deep Space Nine entirely at the pleasure of Bajor, but that does not indicate an occupation.

      Although Jake may not have been ultra interesting, he is integral to Ben Sisko's story. From the beginning, Ben is established to be a father and a widower. The episode "The Visitor" is one of the most fascinating Trek episodes ever. And a reflective young man, standing with his adult advisor/friend, Kira, is the final scene we see in DS9. His story, moved Ben's story.
